For chocolate shakes I'm a simple Baskin and Robins girl. If the bun isn't good, then forget the burger. Has anyone seen a 5 Guys Burgers around Dubai?

SLM we had a condenser dryer at first and it didn't work well for us and I got tired of dumping the water. We stumbled across a huge vented dryer that a leaving expat family was getting rid of and bought it. My DH figured out a way to vent it through the ceiling and out the garage. Works great. You can leave your big appliances behind but bring your small kitchen ones that you have from home if you like them. For me, I had wanted my Kitchenaid and Cuisinart for years and got them for Christmas and two months later we were leaving so I really wanted to bring them with us.

SunDevil, it wasn't me at the pool this weekend...but happy to know there are other Rotel lovers out there! :) Sorry I thought for sure it was you. I met a Canadian family that had a husband that traveled to Houston. Small world I guess.

SunDevil, sticks of faceblock you can put on the children's faces can be found in Boots the Chemist. They do pink, blue or clear and they are 50spf. I find them better than the creams etc as they don't sting their eyes. Thank you! What is Boots the Chemist? I've heard of the Boots stores at the mall but don't know what the Chemist is.

Hello from a fellow US expat! If you have a good allowance bring as much as you can. It will help you feel more at home here. I wish I would have brought more of our nic nacks and art work. I miss my things. How old are your children? Do they use wet wipes? Bring them from the US!!! I always liked Huggies in the states and I can't find thick wipes here despite them being labelled "thick" on the package. The wipes here are like wiping with a wet Kleenex. CdnExpat70 I think I met you at the pool this Friday morning! I've got a large stash of canned Rotel tomatoes in the pantry. I find them all the time at Lulu's and Spinneys. I also found small cans of Old El Paso diced chilies at Spinneys but not on a regular basis so I stock up when I find them. I also agree with you about the dog treats. We've found the selection very limited and our dog doesn't seem to care for them. Bounce dryer sheets can be found at Safestway along SZR. I almost wept in the aisles when I found them. I second the clothes shopping in the states. You can't beat the prices at Old Navy and I stocked up on swim gear for the boys (long sleeve rash guards) and play clothes. I also can't find the sunblock on a stick to put on the kid's faces. I ended up bringing 8 of the salon sized Redken shampoo and conditioner. I regret not bringing more mouse and now I'll have to bring a bunch back in August when we go home on holiday. We brought my huge Kitchen Aid stand mixer, our heavy duty Cuisinart food processor and our waffle maker and can use all of them at the same time on the transformer we bought at the mall. We never have a problem with them working here.

Are there maid agencies that do the visa paperwork for a maid but you sponsor them rather than the agency sponsoring them and only paying them a tiny amount each month? I just don't want to deal with the visa paperwork especially since our residence visas are in AD and would love to find someone to do it. My DH's company doesn't have a PRO and DH is really busy withh work and I don't want to bother him with it.

Dubaicat, I highly recommend www.storknet.com I've been a member on there for over 10 years. They have a special section called AFI (Advanced Fertility Issues) and it was a wealth of information and support during the 7 years we were struggling with infertility.

Both our 1TB and 2TB are media players and are from iomega. They even come with a handy remote control so you can use it like you would a TV remote.

PS: The excuse to pay less to a maid because we have to train her on childcare is pathetic – what about the instinct all ladies have? Maybe if we give the maid good conditions to start with she will be more effective! When I graduated college and got my first teaching job, I started at entry level pay b/c I was a new teacher. When I left teaching 10 years later to be a stay at home mom, I made a lot more than I did my first year teaching b/c I had worked my way up and learned my profession. It's no different for maids.

I was just going to post something the other day about how much money the city would make if they put speed cameras in AR. I've never seen so many people in such a hurry in my life. They must live the most fabulous lives that they can't be bothered to slow down and miss a single thing in their day. I've seen a blue Explorer driving on the main loop from Al Reem, the lady was obviously trying for her best speed trial around the loop as she never even slowed up for the speed bumps.

Yes TB is terabyte. I know the 2TB is down to 999 dhs but you can't compare 250GB to 2TB. Our 2TB can hold over 1,000 movies so it's big. Our 1TB was 500 dhs. We keep the little one in the workout room to hold shows that we watch while on the elliptical.

Lol how much water are you putting on your floors! Mine is almost dry but the time I've gone from one room to another. I'm interested to know about the steam mop thou, how do they work? Do you plug them in? Do they heat up the water? Are they heavey if they are full of water? We have one, bought it at Ace, as I have one in the states and can't live without it. Although the one I have is The Shark and I prefer it a lot more to my Black and Decker here but the Shark isn't available here. They aren't heavy at all. You fill it with tap water, plug it in, wait a few seconds and go. It literally dries within seconds so it doesn't matter if the kids and dog are running around. Besides, you only use steam to clean so no chemicals.

The car registration is fully in my name, even though I'm "just" a housewife. We were able to do it with a copy of our lease. At least tell me the maid's visa registration will be easy. Give me some hope to hold on to, something! :)

We bought a Mercury Mountaineer here in UAE three years ago and were going to ship it to the US. It took a long time to get answers but finally found out we could send it home b/c it was manufactured in the US. Had a sticker on the inside of the driver's door that said manufactured in West Virginia, USA but it was Gulf specs. In the end we decided not to ship it home mainly b/c we weren't in love with the car enough to go through everything. None of the dealerships could help us and all gave us wrong info so they were useless. It was lots and lots of emailing and calling to Ford in the states that finally got us our answers. But yes, we could have shipped that car back to the US without having to convert anything since it was manufactured in the US.

None of that makes any sense. The GMC Acadias sold in Dubai are made on the same productions lines as the GMC Acadias sold in the USA. They use the exact same parts. The only thing they would ever have to special-order would be the glass for the door mirrors if you wanted to keep the Arabic writing. Otherwise, just use the American-market glass with English writing. We just imported our 2007 GMC Envoy from the US. We had to get new tires when we registered the car and they said that even though Envoy's are sold here, our's is from the states and they are different size rims so we had to pay for "special" tires. Bunch of bunk if you ask me but they said the regular UAE Envoy tires would not fit a US Envoy. Also, we paid around $2800 to import our car and it took just shy of 3 months to get here.

We just shipped our car into Dubai from the US so don't know a lot about export except that you will have to get it up to US specs before you can clear it through customs in the US. Do you know if it's built to US specs?

YES!!! DS is rarely, ever sick so never has to take meds. A few months back (when we were in the US) he was put on an antibiotic for a fingernail infection and the first day he was literally jumping off the back of the couch onto the floor and practically climbing the walls. He's never done that before. He was so spun up it was like he couldn't even catch his breath to talk fast enough. I talked to the pharmacist about it and he insisted it wasn't the antibiotics but the only thing different was the meds he was on. It was like having a caged animal in the house that had been let loose.

It's not nail polish remover that they use. I asked and she said, It's a special product that removes the bio gel. I just had mine done again last week at Nail Spa in Ibn and I bought the solution for 40 dhs so I could do it at home.

JShepherd, yes I'm in Mirador. If you'd like me to let them out once a day to help ease the pet sitter trips to your house just let me know. Rubberduck, we definitely need a pet sitting circle. Our lab is really well behaved and is great with kids so I hate for her to be kenneled anytime we want to make a quick weekend trip. Plus you never know when you might get stuck out somewhere and take longer than expected and need someone to pop by the house to let the dogs out. If you had a few people you trusted, you could call them and have them do a quick run to the house to let the babies out.

Meals, they are a great quality candle. They burn evenly and for a long time. They have some delicious scents and I can't pick one I like the best but I like to rotate mine depending on the time of year. But if I had to pick only one to burn year round it would be Home Sweet Home. Check out their website. www.yankeecandle.com and you'll see how much they have. Their car jars are the best air freshner for the car.
