Snoop, I have two boys size 2/3 and 5 that I'm looking for shorts and shirts. What do you have? I was going to buy some on Ebay in the states and pay to have it shipped here.

Our lab was on Heart Guard medication in the states and finished her last chewable tablet from the pack last week. I need to get her another pack so she can take her medication next month and I've checked two vet offices so far and neither has ever heard of the medication. The last office said they don't carry any heart worm preventative meds b/c there isn't heart worm here in UAE. Anyone here have their dogs on a heart worm preventative or is it really true heart worm isn't an issue here?

Good luck little Freckles! Exile, I think there is a difference between recognizing one just pee'd on the floor and recognizing the urge to pee. It sounds like your's aren't yet recognizing the urge to pee and therefore you are just running yourself ragged trying to clean up the mess. Let them go a little longer before you push potty training since they are only 2.5. Diapers may cost more but there's some safety net to them being in diapers vs being in underwear and you hear them say, "I have to pee" and you have a buggy full of groceries and not a potty in sight. When DS was ready I literally planned on secluding myself into the house for a few days. I stocked up on groceries so I didn't have to leave and then one day started. I set a timer for every 45 minutes and at that mark I put him on the potty. If one little dribble of pee came out he got a Skittle. We did this for two days and that was it, he never looked back and he only had two or three accidents after that. But I think the key was waiting till he was ready. Good luck with your potty training! DS #2 is proving to take much longer to be ready so I'm going to let his wife potty train him.

Thank you! DH is out of town right now but I'm already plotting when I can pawn the LO's off on him and check this place out. I googled Kath Cidson and her stuff is very pretty, romantic. I'm a Pottery Barn/Ballard Designs kind of girl but at this point I'm willing to look at everything!

Is Beach road where the On The Border Mexican restaurant is at? Is there a certain point to park and then start walking? Is it street parking or garage parking?

It depends on your allowance but there's quite a range here in AR from town homes to individual villas. We pay 230K for our 5 bedroom type 15 in Mirador and negotiated the rent but it needed some major elbow grease and we had to redo the yard on our own dime.

Bestfull Windows had everything! Seriously make a trip to Dragonmart and you'll see how many different things they offered. We bought wood blinds from Ikea and DH needs to cut them down on both ends to make them fit and then we went to Bestfull a few days later and saw they can make them custom for the windows, nicer colors and quality, and for no more than Ikea.

We recently used Bestfull Window Tracery at Dragonmart. They're in FBD02 and we had vertical blinds made for 3 large sliding glass doors that go out to our patios and balcony. They were 180X214 and we paid 635dhs for all three total. They were ready in 2 days. I picked the design and color. We installed them ourselves and they are a cinch to install. 050 886 8269 I'm going to call them again this week and have more vertical blinds made and some roller shades made.

Corkshelly I'm in Mirador. Email me and let's see if we can get together. I'm trying to host a coffee next Wednesday April 6th. Well behaved kids welcome. ;-) I've thought about doing the coffee mornings but I have my boys and don't have live in help so if it's not child friendly I can't attend. <em>edited by SunDevil on 29/03/2011</em>

I don't have teenagers as my boys are 4 and 2 but we moved to AR last month and love it here. We moved from AD and DH does the commute. We should have moved years ago to AR. The only problem with this place is you never see anyone out. I figured I'd make tons of friends since I'm a SAHM and I take my boys to the park and pool but I never see a soul. It's just me and the maids at the park during the day. So even though I'm surrounded by families, I'm so lonely.

We just moved from central TX a couple weeks ago. Typically central TX is a wash of blue right now with the wild bluebonnets this time of year and the tradition is to plop your child down in the middle of bluebonnets and take their picture. Unfortunately central TX got very little rainfall this year and the bluebonnets are expected to be very scarce, otherwise I'd tell you to get some good bluebonnet pictures. SA is a great town! We were married there on the River Walk along a spot called Marriage Island so SA always holds a special spot in our hearts. Between San Marcos (best outlets EVER) and SA is a town called New Braunfels and they have a great waterpark called Schlitterbahn. If it's warm enough, you could spend a whole day there. Corpus Christie has a nice aquarium and they have some great military ships that you can tour.

I need to get my iphone unlocked and I read online how to unlock it but there were several steps involved and lots of downloading. I'm somewhat computer literate and DH is very good with computers. Should I attempt it myself or just have someone here unlock it? I have 3 months left on my contract in the states and then I'm free of AT&T but I can't go another 3 months without my iphone. Pathetic I know.

Are Joseph and Jessel the same company? I want to get vertical blinds installed for two sliding glass doors but it seems that what I call vertical blinds are different than what they call them here. I want the long slats that hang from top to bottom. You can open them to let light in or you can pull them all the way to the side to exit the door. We went to Ikea last night and bought several wood blinds for our other windows but they are horizontal and when I asked for vertical blinds the salesman kept taking me to the horizontal blinds insisting they were vertical blinds.

Mods this is not for the pet section!! I want a walking partner, not someone to walk my dog. Just b/c I mention I'll have a dog with me doesn't put this under the pet section. I don't want someone to be surprised when I show up with a large dog if people are afraid of dogs. Please return this to the Dubai section where I had it.

DH said the pet import permit was 200 dhs but there were several other fees when he picked her up like vet fees so that's what caused the price to be higher. Also, he did not have to get the e-card, they now accept cash. Or I should say, that day they accepted cash, who knows what it will be tomorrow. LOL

Just wanted to let you know that Bella arrived safe and sound this week and is running around like nothing ever happened. She had a great flight and layover in Frankfurt and I'm so happy we shipped her over here. Thank you for all of your help! Oh and just to add, DH said it was almost 800 dhs to pick her up from the airport, so the price has gone up, but still worth every penny.

We've been in AR's for one week now and the doorbell has not stopped ringing. Every evening I have had at least 2-3 people show up to our door and introduce themselves and ask if we need part-time cleaning or a gardener. First off, I want our own personal live-in so I'm not interested in part-time cleaning and I know our yard looks like death warmed over b/c the previous tenant never watered it, but I love to garden so I will have it whipped into shape myself in no time. It's not a big deal at all but really, how long will people keep knocking on the door trying to find work? Will this end when they start to see our own maid here? LOL For heaven's sake I'm trying to get caught up on Desperate Housewives in the evening and this is cramping my TV time constantly answering the door. :)

Emaar security came by the house last night at 8:40 pm to talk to us. They said we should report it to the police but DH says the police have better things to do than find our plants. The supervisor said in all of his years here he's never had stolen plants. LOL Our place doesn't look deserted so I don't think someone thought we were moving out. Yesterday morning before leaving to run our errands the gardener from next door kept watching us and when I'd turn to look at him he'd duck behind a bush, but I know he was watching us. Then we leave for three hours and our plants are gone. Someone knew we were gone. I'm just chalking it up to a lesson learned. I still think it's a great area to live but now I'll be super vigilant. Too bad the dog couldn't have let herself out and had a "talk" with the thieves.

I don't think it was a mistake. Tonight we discovered they took another plant out of the pot and left the pot tha had a crack in it. They picked the plants they wanted. We told the security guard today and gave them the time we were out and then tonight we talked to them again. They said they would give it to their supervisor tomorrow.

We don't have a garage door. We had them lined up on one side of the garage and up against the inside wall. We told the security guard and gave him times that it happened but I'm sure it won't lead to anything. I'm sure they are gone. They took some of our plants that had matching dishes underneath to catch the water and broke one and instead of taking that too, they just left the broken dish. I jokingly told my DH, "Now we have fingerprints, let's call the police." Our chocolate lab arrived late last night around 2:00 am and we left her huge crate out to dry and had a lawn chair as well out in the garage and they didn't take those, so I'm confident this was done by a gardener.

We had copies attested and it worked for all of our visas, id card, drivers license, etc. And if anyone wants a tip on the passport size pictures, we took all of our own pictures at the house against a white wall. Then I cropped all the pictures to be 2X2 and I arranged three across and two down so it formed a 4X6 picture. Then I go to the photo lab and have them print off one 4X6 picture and it makes 6 passport size pictures for that person. Much easier than paying someone to print off passport size pictures.

We are leaving AD next weekend for Dubai. We've been in AD for three years and although I prefered AD over Dubai initially I am tired of nothing to do in AD and the sky high price of real estate. Plus I've been wanting a more American style neighborhood and house with a yard and we are getting exactly what we want in Dubai for what we've been paying for a flat in AD with no ammenities. My DH works outside of AD so his commute from our place on the Corniche has always been at least 40 minutes. On nights where he works late, he drives the 40 minutes home and sometimes can't find a parking space for half an hour to an hour, so tack that onto his commute and he's just spent a lot of time in the car. We are moving to Arabian Ranches and his commute will be longer from Dubai but it's all highway to his work and instead of coming home and circling the parking lot for a half hour, he can pull right into our garage. I think the quality of life is going to be much better in Dubai and I'm looking forward to the more western shopping malls and stores that I'm used to back home.

This is good to know. I'll make sure DH gets the card. So there is no fee to pay for the permit right now? I just print it off? We'll fly into DXB around 7:30 pm get our things and then DH will run us home and I'll get the boys in bed and he'll run back up to the airport to get our dog. I'm going to print this off for him and make him a little checklist of sorts so he knows what to expect.

My thread on shipping my pet into UAE was moved but I wanted to make sure you saw that my pet import application was successfully, and quickly may I add, approved. Thank you so much, you saved me a great deal of money! I didn't want you to think your info wasn't appreciated. And Mods, it would be nice if when a thread gets moved there is a shadow thread left in it's spot but the title would say, "Moved". All the other message boards I visit have that feature and that way people wouldn't think their stuff was deleted and would alert people to other parts of this board.

DC2DXB, I just got a message that my import permit was approved. Thank you for the link! I learned today that when they ship our lab she will leave at 4:30pm from Houston, stay a day in Frankfurt and then arrive in DXB by 11:30 pm the next day. So we have decided to ship her out Friday night, we'll leave Saturday morning and we'll arrive in DXB on Sunday at 7:30 pm and our lab will arrive a couple hours later and we'll pick her up ourselves. I really appreciate your help with that link. I think this new arrangement will work out even better.

Thank you, my application is pending and I emailed them my rabies certificate and the vacine certificate. When do I pay them for the import permit? To make things even more crazy for my husband, he's handling our move from AD to Arabian Ranches next weekend so he has a lot on his plate right now. So I'm trying to make this as easy as possible for him. We are not going to ship her on the same flight as us. We do the Delta flight from our small town to Atlanta and then Atlanta into DXB but that part of the leg is 15 hours and too long for her to be on a plane in that crate. She's going to fly Lufthansa Houston to Frankfurt, stay all day Saturday and then leave Frankfurt for DXB and arrive at 11:25 at night on Sunday. I don't want to do that route as we are Diamond medallion on Delta and we are travelling with a 4 and 2 year old and it's only one layover on Delta vs the all day layover on Lufthansa and trying to entertain the kids that long.

Thank you! I'm going to check out that link. The amount of money this is costing us is making me ill. I love our lab but sometimes I wonder if they don't play on your emotions over the pet and know you'll pay what it takes to get them there. They were going to charge me $800 USD just to pick her up from my house here in the states and drive her to the airport. I'm doing that myself to save the money. If I was already in Dubai that would be one thing. I could handle all of it as I don't work but DH is working in AD and making the commute so I hate dumping this all on him. I'll arrive a few days after our lab does.

This thread as been very helpful. I'm considering home schooling my son who will turn 5 this Nov. I'm just not 100% comfortable with putting him in to KG 2 which age wise is where he would go and I feel like KG 1 is going to be too easy for him as he's already reading simple readers, rhyming, and doing patterns in Math . Plus the idea of putting him in a school with 22 children in a classroom doesn't thrill me either. I taught Kinder and 1st grade for 10 years so I know how to teach him and I shipped quite a bit of my teaching supplies over there (unifix cubes, teddy bear counters, pattern blocks, science equipment, all my calendar supplies, and over 750 children's books and my listening centers) but how do you find the availability of teaching supplies to be in Dubai in case there are other things I need to use?

I hade this problem as well with my cotton tee shirts but finally figured out it was my seatbelt catching the fabric when I was in the car and it would rub the shirt against the snap of my pants and the seatbelt causing a small hole and then when it was washed it just got worse.

We aren't from the UK but the US and when DH and I ran out of pages we went to the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and they added pages right there on the spot. Then they put a little stamp in the passport that said pages had been added. Can you possibly do that and not have to go through the whole renewal process?
