Children's literature is my passion!! I have over 750 children's books currently in our shipment on it's way to Dubai right now. Eric Carle writes fantastic books that also teach a life lesson and his books are also available as board books so they are great for LO's. Also, check out these books: http://www.amazon.com/Thats-Pirate-Usborne-Touchy-Feely/dp/0794517021/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_11 There are so many of them from That's Not My Truck, That's Not My Car, That's Not My Princess. Both of my boys love these and each page has a different texture to match the words of the book. For example, "That's not my train, it's smoke stack is too rusty." "That's not my pirate, his eyebrows are too fluffy." The kids love the textures and the books promote new vocabulary. I have purchased several of these books in the Khalidiya mall in AD so I know they are in UAE. I've also bought them at Barnes and Noble in the states so I'm sure the bigger bookstores in Dubai would carry them.

if the neighbour is calling a taxi driver to have *** with him in the middle of the night, I'd assume she already knows. I don't think it's the home owner getting the midnight booty call.

Crowne just came to our house today and packed our Dubai shipment. They were fantastic and very professional. We shipped 6,000 lbs in a 20 ft container. We had about 3 feet leftover but didn't need to fill it all up. It's going to cost us $7,800 USD not including insurance.

Forgot to tell you, after you finish the mosque tour, drive straight down 30th and it dead ends into the spot where you rent the carts and the resturants. Very easy drive.

Why not go to the Corniche and rent those bike/car things? Your mom can sit and have a coffee and you and the kids can rent a four seater and go for a spin. They have single seaters too. Afterwards y'all could cool off with some ice cream or enjoy a cinnamon roll.

That's quite a sweeping generalization about Texas especially since it could be applied to many states and countries. What's referred to as "the good old boys" in Texas could be called "wasta" in UAE. I'll say it again, Texas is a HUGE state and includes people from all walks of life and all over the world. It's not just a bunch of country bumpkins. If it's not your cup of tea then that's fine but there must be something good about it for 25 million people to call it home.

It depends on your taste. If I could live anywhere in Texas it would be Austin. Great town with a good night life, known for it's live music venues, great weather with a heavy emphasis in that town on being outdoors and enjoying mother nature. Museums for the children, wonderful art scene. Excellent shopping, great schools, a large river and huge lake for water sports. Home of the University of TX which is a top notch university and home of the top ranked Longhorns if you are a sports fan. It's a very diverse town. Many celebs call it home like Sandra Bullock but can blend with the crowd and go unseen b/c Austin isn't impressed with that type of stuff. It's a casual town at heart. But a lot of people love the big cities like Houston and Dallas. Houston is by the water but can be very humid. Dallas has a lot to do but other's will say it's very pretentious and snooty. San Antonio is a great city and has sports teams and a lot to do outdoors. San Antonio has a lot of Hispanic people so it's influenced by that culture; fantastic Mexican food! Texas is so big and so diverse that there is something for everyone.

And if you live in Columbia Maryland, you don't need to pay for schooling because howard county schools are pretty awesome. We don't have a choice here, the only children that get public PreK in our town are the children of military families or low income children. The rest of us have to put our children in private PreK.

The northeast has 4 of the top 5 worst places for taxes! The best are Nevada, Wyoming, Texas, south Dakota, and I am not sure of the 5th. Reno is lovely! I've considered living in a lot of places but never in a million years would I consider South Dakota, cheap taxes or not! LOL Wyoming is pretty but not very populated but some people like that rural feel, Nevada is nice and has Las Vegas and it has good weather but their housing market is in the tank so you could pick up a house pretty cheap, and Texas just rocks!! I love Texas!

That depends on where you live. You can live very comfortably in my town on $60K-$70K a year but that won't even scratch the surface of what you would need in areas like CA or NY. My son goes to private PreK and we pay $235 a month for that. My sister in law lives in Houston and she pays nearly $1,000 a month for her son's PreK. Some states don't levy an income tax but their property taxes can be a little higher but you can deduct property taxes from your federal tax. So it's not an easy cut and dry answer. You would need to say which area and then go from there.

DH might be getting an offer from work to move to Virginia. Would love to know what you ladies think of Virginia and if there is anything I need to know. [b'>I think I would like Virginia beach as it seems its a bit warmer.[/b'> TIA VB has a major military installation. All those cute sailors and Navy pilots running around...I think that's where all the heat comes from. :) VB is a great area and there is quite a bit to do, but the only drawback with it being a military town is it's a very transient community. So if you're looking to settle in for the long haul, you might have a large turnover of friends.

Cancun is one of my favorite places to stay but if you go, stay at an all inclusive resort and stay on the resort. The violence in Mexico has really gotten bad lately but if you stay on the resort compound you'll be fine. But you should know that Cancun in July is ungodly humid.

But that's Texas for you. Texas is a VERY big state. It will take you two solid days to drive across it. Never in all my years living here have I been asked which church I go to, which the answer would be none. The other thing to consider is some states in the US don't charge a state income tax, with Texas being one of the states that does not have a income tax, so that's more money in your pocket. Virginia is beautiful but they do have some pretty high taxes in that area. So keep that in mind when you are picking your state.

Please go try the Proactive and follow the directions using it twice daily for at least a month and see how it goes. The sun only worsened my problem and made my sun spots bad. Proactiv cleared up all my acne (and it was the cyst kind that would stay for weeks and hurt) and it cleared up my sun spots. It literally changed my skin and I don't mean to sound like a commercial. But I would have days where I wouldn't leave the house b/c my skin was so bad and then one day I try the Proactiv and the acne is gone and I think, "Why didn't I try this sooner?" You can find it in Boots. Get the starter set to start with. You'll need the three to make it work; face wash, astringegent (green liquid), and acne lotion solution. I also follow up with my regular lotion (Purpose) and I don't use their mask but maybe once every couple of months.

Have you tried Proactiv yet? I struggled for years with what you are talking about with it being so bad somedays that I didn't want to leave the house. I didn't have acne as a teen but it hit me hard in my 30's. Tried several things with the dermatologist but nothing worked. I finally broke down and spent the money on Proactiv and it literally changed my skin.

I would recommend North Carolina or Virgina. DH is from FL and their economy is really struggling right now and their education budgets are struggling to provide for their schools. We lived in Savannah, GA and while it is picturesque the crime there is terrible. Their schools are still under court order desegration and the politics in that town can be awful. VA has some excellent schools and there is a lot to do in VA especially with it being so close to DC. NC is beautiful and has great schools both elementary and college level.

If you want it to drop to the ground you can buy a bedskirt to cover the portion where the quilt stops. I just bought a queen size quilt for my son at PBK on Friday here in the states so surely the Dubai store could get the larger sizes as well.

Hey Anneke, I'm moving to AR and will be there March 5th. I'm in the states right now and will be shipping our lab Bella to Dubai. I have a four year old that will start school and have a two year old. I love to meet up with ladies and shop or have lunch. I don't drink coffee but that doesn't keep me from meeting up with other ladies for a drink of something else. I have a two year old too! Another reason why y'all need to move to AR!! We'll throw the boys in the playroom and get all the ladies together in the kitchen for sweet tea and lunch.

Don't move to AD. We've been in AD for 3 years and moving to AR mid Feb. You will NOT find any bathrooms like what you want. DH is going to make the commute but I think it will be worth it to have so much more for our money and so much more to do than in AD.

Texans are taking over the world. One country at a time. ;) yay! once a month i get really hormotional and miss Texans. I'm looking forward to running into you guys. Just hearing you talk will make me feel better. (creepy, eh?). I've lived in London for 4 years, and even though I live close to the American School, I don't hear many Texan accents. Everyone always seems to be from NJ. I haven't decided if I want to pick up a faux Brittish accent or Austrailian accent when I get to Dubai. I figure it worked for Madonna when she was married to Guy Ritchie. LOL Either way, I'll never stop say y'all and fixin' to.

We are moving into Miradoor in a type 15 and I think it has a decent bathroom. It has a seperate tub, double vanity, and large tile shower (the little small square tiles like subway tile, not the big tiles you see on the floor) with glass doors. It's a good size and the nice thing about the type 15 is it has an awesome kitchen too! We are going to be in the low 200's so not a bad price.

Someone hit our car in Abu Dhabi while it was parked and didn't leave a note. It didn't dent the car but left an ugly scratch and took a large chunk of paint off. DH took it to the dealership in AD and they took care of it without a police report. It only cost a couple hundred dirhams and you can't tell it was ever hit. I couldn't believe how well they did and for next to nothing.

GGP I don't think the ketchup tastes the same in UAE or Russia for that matter as it does in the states. I heard once that it's b/c they use different sugar. Beet sugar in Europe vs sugar cane in the US. So perhaps they use different sugar in the hot sauce and that changes the taste just slightly?

[b'>Sun devil your vet clearly has not dealt with the shipping of an animal. The air carriers will not accept sedated pets so please make sure you do not sedate them. [/b'> We brought our elderly cat over and she was fine and did not soil herself. She was calm and well cared for. Hopefully others from the us can let you know who they used. We used a company in the Uk called air pets and we used Dubai doghouse to clear her through at the Dubai end which saves time. Alison at the doghouse was superb -maybe call her and she can allay your fears. There are many many dogs here who have come over with their families and I've not heard of any horror stories. I would check that your vet is fully up to date with the vaccination requirements for coming over to live here - again the Dubai doghouse can help you with that if you need to double check that your vet is fully up to speed on the requirements. But please don't sedate. Your dog will be wagging his tail in the sand before you know it! Good luck on coming over here - exciting times are ahead for you. Claire if you go back and read my latest post I said my vet does NOT recommend sedating a dog for travel. And we live in a military town and my vet has shipped military animals and military family animals all over the world. She has all of her shots and her certificate of health. She is cleared to travel, I'm just worried but looking for calming words of people who have done this with their family pet. I'm sorry it's early here I must have misread! I hope the rest of my info has helped to calm you! It did, thank you! I see you mentioned using the Dubai Doggiehouse to pick them up from the airport. I was hoping to pick her up ourselves. Is that not a reality? Should I plan on hiring someone to do it?

BuyMeAPony, my vet said he does not recommend medication as it can make the trip much worse and the shipping company we spoke to said they would not transport a sedated dog, so that's not an option. I did read where I can put in one of our shirts or blankets for her that has our smell on it and it will help. Dmum, our lab can be a bit of a nervous dog too and had to be on doggie prozac this past year for some anxiety spells she was having but has been able to come off the meds for several months now. So that's what we worry about is she'll have one of her anxiety attacks and end up having a heart attack in flight. She is definitely a pack dog and will stick by us even when we are out camping and she doesn't have a leash on. She won't leave our yard even when she sees other dogs or people walk by the yard. She never leaves our side. She knows who butters her biscuits! So I hate to rehome her since she's such a part of our pack.

I am moving to Dubai next month and want to bring our chocolate Lab. She is four years old and an incredible dog that goes everywhere with us, camps with us, walks daily with me, and is wonderful with our two boys. She is family. I know all the details on shipping her and have been in contact with Air Animal on getting her shipped into Dubai. My problem is I'm a nervous wreck about the flight. She'll fly Lufthansa from Houston to Frankfurt and then into Dubai. Air Animal assured me she will be cared for but I have a friend that used to unload cargo for UPS aircraft and he said the dogs would get so stressed during the flights that they would soil themselves and be a mess in their crates. So now I'm worried that I'm being selfish to bring her over there. Maybe I should rehome her and keep her out of the heat of Dubai (we live in TX now and it can get hot here too) and avoid the stress of the flight. But she's my baby and I can't bear the thought of being away from her. Anyone want to share success stories for shipping a dog to Dubai?

I have been through Domededovo so many times and know the baggage claim area well - it is quite small and enclosed - ideal for maximum impact from a bomb. DH is due to go through there on Monday. Me too, and you are right, it is a very small area and always loaded with people. So very sad.

[i'>On this topic: Does anyone know of a good blog by westerners who have moved to Dubai? I would love to find something like this, just to hear of their experiences and their kids' adjustment to the move...[/i'> That's the direction I'm going to take my blog, sort of a "life as an expat" blog. My oldest son and I have been going back and forth from the states to AD for 2.5 years now but now that son #2 is home from Russia we are selling the house here in the states and going fulltime in Dubai so I really want to blog about our time as a way for our family to look back years from now on what our life was like. Anyone have any blogs they love and would like to share?

I love reading blogs especially where I can find neat decorating ideas, recipes, photography tips, etc. There are so many talented people out there and I love to find inspiration from them. Our adoption blog started out as a way to keep our family informed since they are scattered throughout the states. I put our adoption timeline on it, our struggles with the government forces to get paperwork done, I put tips for people to use if they got stuck with an adoption problem, put helpful adoption websites on the blog and really tried to detail everything we went through as a way of remembering for our own family and as a way to help other people. To my total surprise a lot of people around the world started following the blog and said how helpful it was during their adoption journey so that made me feel good that I could help other people. When I let everyone know that I was ending the adoption blog b/c our journey was finished I got so many comments from people upset that I was going to stop blogging about our boys and how they were settling in to our family and the move we were making to UAE that I had to start a seperate day-to-day blog that I update about our travels and how the boys are doing. I love blogging and I love following other people's blogs. I've learned so much through the blogging community and think it's a great thing.

Does anybody here blog? There seems to be quite a hoo-ha about a few at the moment. Just wondering if anyone here blogs and what you write about. I do, but it's a bit random. Who do you read? I read Pioneer Woman on a regular basis and a few others. I blogged throughout our entire adoption journey from Russia. Once home I converted my blog into a book so my children can go back and read about how they became a part of our family.
