Yes of course you can get to Motor City - it doesn't just go to the polo club !! The letter explained why it's necessary - to finish the work on Al Quadra street..no problem - will add a few minutes to my journey is all.. So is the road fully paved now that takes you in the back of Motor City? Maybe the r/a will still be open and just the access to Motor city will be closed? That at least wouldn't be as painful for all the people leaving AR's from that r/a exit.

We received the notice today on our door that the Motorcity r/a is closing within the month. It suggested using the Studio city r/a instead. Is that the one that that takes you into the back of the Polo Club? Can you go in there and get to Spinneys from there? I tried last year but part of the road was dirt. Is it accessible now? DH commutes to AD from AR so I'm not sure how this is going to affect his access to 311 southbound. I just know it's going to be a mess for awhile.

I think most people do the opposite, flee AD for Dubai. We lived in AD for 3 years and moved to Dubai last year and have been here a year. We love Dubai and even if you doubled DH's salary, I wouldn't go back. He still does the commute but it's worth it for the better life we have here in Dubai. When we lived in AD we were constantly driving to Dubai for things to do and places to shop.

I know, I know, oh what a problem to have, but we haven't taken a family vacation in years and DH's company always finds an excuse about how busy they are and can't let him have time off. So now he's rolled over a ton of vacation time and we are bound and determined to take some time off and enjoy a vacation.

Do you go to Italy or Spain or Cyprus for a week in May? We want to stay fairly close to avoid a long flight. We had planned to go to Italy for a week and meet my in-laws there but the in-laws can't make it b/c MIL's mom is not doing well and they expect her to only live a short time and MIL is afraid to leave the country with her so sick. Italy has always been on my bucket list but now I'm wondering about a 5 year old, 3 year old, and 10 month old touring the city with us. Before the in-laws could stay with the two littles somewhere kid friendly while DH and I go with our 5 year old and see some of the walking sites of Italy but now that's all out the window. Suggestions?

Thank you! I didn't think about Za'abeel park! Is the Emaar park at the base of Burj Khalifa pretty with grass? We are taking the kids to the aquarium one day and we could kill two birds with one stone.

I thought of that. Do they have grassy areas that we can access? I've only been twice and didn't pay much attention at the time.

There is a new song out by Emeli Sande called Next To Me. It's only released in the UK and I'm trying to buy the song. It doesn't come out in the states until June. My iTunes account is registered in the US and it won't let me convert it to buy it from the UK iTunes site. Is there another UK site that I can go to to purchase songs? I'm not familiar with the popular music sites from the UK. A friend of mine told me about a music site in the US and it claims to have the song but it's been copied off someone's speaker and the quality is bad.

Just as an FYI for anyone that needs room dimensions, if you go to the top of that page I linked and click developments, go to the 3rd page via the drop down menu and scroll to the bottom it says Arabian Ranches. If you click on that it brings you to a page that lists all the neighborhoods and room dimensions for the houses.

That's almost exactly what the dimensions read on the link I included. Good to know the link is accurate so I'll keep it again for anyone in the future.

Thank you Simpleasabc for the link! I see it's 650 dhs for entrance. I've double checked the email and the invite and both say, "pleased to invite you" and the phone rep specifically said, "be our guest" so it sounds like they are covering the admittance cost right? Catawba, I'll have to have you ask the chairman about this one.

Yes, if you enter there from the roundabout and drive a ways back into it, you'll think you are just about at the end and the shop will be on the right. If you are looking at their shop they will have a whole section of pots on the left side and on the far right side the wall is lined with pots. Walk back in there and you'll see even more.

I went to the main office in Al Barsha today. My ID is expired and I had to get a new ID for my maid and my three children. They said the Al Barsha typing center was no longer taking anyone as they were full. (this was around 10:00 a.m.) so they suggested a place by the Burj Khalifia. I asked someone else where the closest typing center was at and they sent us to Dubai Knowledge Village bldg 12. We went there and arrived just at 11:00 a.m. and they said they weren't taking anymore people for the day as they were full. They did give us the forms to fill out and a half hour later we asked again if we could get an appt and they accepted us and DH turned in all of our passports and applications and paid the fees for 2 year ID cards. They said they would SMS us later in the day or possibly tomorrow with our appt and we could go back and get our passports and have the maid finger printed.

sorry for being so naive, but do alot of people have pits here, i havent seen one? gangs of boys?? who is buying them? id love to know how they get here....? We have one on our street here in AR's. It's a Pakistani guy that "walks" him. The dog has a huge chain collar on and a thick rope and drags the guy down the street. The guy has no control of it. We also have a husband and wife a few houses down, they have two dogs, one looks like a mutt and they are out of control. Their dogs are medium size dogs and are very aggressive to other dogs on our street. One day I heard a dog fight out front and screaming and the wife yelling tostop it, stop hurting the dog. The dog had gone after another dog yet again and Lost it and starting pinning the dog down on the ground and his wife kept screaming at him that neighbors were coming out looking and to stop it. They have no control over these dogs and even though they aren't listed as official "aggressive" breeds, they are very aggressive dogs. The last time I saw them some poor maid was walking her three small dogs and the couple's dogs went after her and she ran across the street and hid behind a wall until they passed. When I went out to check on her I told her those dogs needed to be removed from this neighborhood and she just kept saying, "It's okay madam, I can just hide behind here when they come by." Why on earth should anyone have to hide from another dog on their daily walk? These dogs or owners should be reported tell us where they live, I do not want to walk my 2 children and dogs past them if this is going to happen. Pls pls do let us know where in the Miradors this is happening? Street 1 by the entrance gate has the pit bull. It's not out often but when it's out, it's dragging it's owner. Street 1 also has the two aggressive dogs with the owner and a wife that pushes a baby buggy or carries the baby in a front sling. If you see that couple with those dogs, leave and leave immediately! Have you seen the big German Shepard on the back side of Mirador on the golf course that is chained up in the front side yard? Whenever you walk by it barks and lunges at people passing by. Wow are they new here? Not seen them b4 but doesn't sound good at all. Can we, would you? complain about the aggressive ones with the dh? Yes have seen the Shepherd round the back he is obviously a guard dog and have seen him lunging, but I have also seen him out with the children and he seemed friendly with them, however! I have been a bit concerned about him when walking past as he does look like he might somehow get out from behind the fence and that's me and 1 of my little dogs on the otherside of the road minding our own business hhmmmm. I think I know where they live, I'm 99% sure, and yes if I see them out again and the dogs are aggressive again, I will go straight to security.

GirlAnachronism... please tell me the steps that you did to get this ID card sorted. I have read so many different stories about what to 1st and where to go, blah, blah... could you give me the facts. much appreciated :-) I went to the typing centre in Al Barsha (it should have the location on the site), paid the fee for my 2 year's ID card, gave them my passport (yesterday). Today at 12pm I went back and collected my passport and the typed form, went to the ID place in Barsha (the one between Civil Defense and the petrol station on the road leading to/from TECOM). They did all my handprints and took a photo. There was a bit of confusion as I received a text telling me to go to Rashidiya, but it turns out you can just go to any ID place without an appointment as long as you have the form. Card should be delivered in a month or so I looked at the list of sites on the Dubai section of the EIDA website and didn't see anything for Al Barsha. Can you give me the name of the building you went to? Thank you!

Does anyone know the closest typing center to Arabian Ranches? DH is taking the day off tomorrow to get this sorted out. His ID is fine, mine is expired, our three children don't have one, and apparently now the maid needs one. We will be busy with paperwork tomorrow. edited by SunDevil on 05/02/2012

I've been looking at the Souk Al Bahar and I'd like to make reservations for outdoor dining at the Meat Co but I can't tell from the map online if the Meat Co will have views of the fountain show. Does anyone know if we'll have a good view of the fountains? Yes they do have a view of the fountains when booking ask for a table with the best view it's not a full view for that you're better booking the terrace at the Rivington grill Well I want a great view of the fountains so it looks like Rivingtons. Thank you!

Thank you Mehreen, I will send you an email. I tried the contact phone number but it took me to a phone in Canada. I could believe it was a mistake if it didn't say next to my name that I paid by credit card next to my name. I think the driver thought he could get my maid to pay up and then it would be his word against hers. He didn't know he was going to get a maid that could read and write English well.

I've ordered things online several times and had Aramex ship them to me. I usually pay cash at delivery and sometimes pay online but recently I found out that if you pay online with a credit card they will deduct 10% off the shipping costs so I have been paying all the fees now online to get the discount. I have three large orders coming in so I paid online for all three orders and received an email verification stating my payment went through. I got an SMS today from Aramex letting me know my packages were in and I owed 466 dhs for delivery. But I already paid the delivery online. I informed my maid that my packages should be arriving while I was out and told her I prepaid and gave her printed copies of my statements for her to show the driver. When my packages arrived the driver insisted that I had not paid and my maid told him I paid online. The driver wouldn't let up and demanded the 466 dhs from my maid and she said she would get the paperwork to prove I had paid. The driver told her he would go check some other paperwork in his truck and come back and in the meantime he needed her to sign for the packages and showed her where to sign. She said she looked down the list of deliveries and she could see all the people that owed money and all the people that had paid with a credit card and right next to my name it said I paid online. She said she watched him go back to the truck, he sat in it for one minuted not doing anything and then came back to the house and said he checked his other papers and it shows I'm paid and he handed her the packages. This happened to me once before where I paid online for the 50 dhs delivery charge but the package came when I was out and my maid didn't know I paid so she paid the driver when he demanded the 50 dhs. When I got home I reimbursed her but kept thinking to myself that I knew I had paid already but then again I have three small children at home so maybe I was just losing my mind. But now I'm onto this guy and I wouldn't be surprised if he was trying to make some money off my maid.

That would have been handy information for me to include! The only thing we'll rule out is Indian food and anything with curry. I'd like to be served but don't mind a buffet. We went to Junsui at the Burj Al Arab and that was buffet style but still a nice dinner. We keep saying we want to have a nice dinner with a view of the fountains so that would be a plus. Either lively or quiet is fine, it wouldn't matter. We are just so excited for these guests to come over and want to show them some nice places in Dubai.

We have guests coming to Dubai from the states in mid March and we'd like to go out to a nice dinner with them. Both of our families have young children and it will be nice to have a dinner out where we don't have to cut up anyone's food. We thought we'd go to dinner and then take them to the Skyview bar afterwards for late drinks. Any suggestions?

I'd use Ahlan. We used Marhaba for Mum when she came over at Christmas and it was rubbish - all their standard service provides is someone to walk you through passport control. [b'>Nobody meets you as you leave the aircraft, you have to find your own way to the Marhaba stand, and when Mum got there, they were too busy so she had to wait for 20 minutes for someone to take a group of them through[/b'>. And we booked their Diamond service for Dad as I wanted a buggy for him (he struggles to walk distances but hates having to have a wheelchair) and they promised me they'd arrange a buggy and gave him a wheelchair. That's exactly what happened to my sister. It was terrible and I won't use Marhaba again. We kept trying to get help at their counter by Costa coffee and waited for 45 minutes asking someone if they could tell me if my sister had been picked up from the plane b/c it was getting so late and no one would help us. Come to find out, she was late b/c she was lost. I told her someone would be there at the plane for her and she was left to wander around.

We've always used Marhaba and used them in December when my sister and children arrived. It was her first time traveling and first time for an international flight so I wanted someone that would meet her at the plane. It was horrible and I will never, ever use them again. I booked the standard meet and greet and it doesn't say they don't meet you at the plane like it's always been in the past and my sister was left wandering around for 20 minutes before she accidentally saw her son's name on a board and found out that is the Marhaba stand. When she found someone to finally help her and get her through to us I asked what the problem was and the rep said I should have booked the Diamond package.

At least today it's not as noisy. The winds must have shifted and are taking the noise elsewhere.
