I read about Plastibells or plastic rings that can be applied so that the skin just falls away after a few days. My boys both had the bell technique and the recovery was absolutely nothing! A few hours after the procedure they were up playing and feeling fine. We had to fight them to keep them quiet and inactive. But I thought the doctor said the bell technique is for the younger children that are smaller in size so I don't know if a 14 year old would qualify, but if the doctor can use the bell technique, insist on it. My first son didn't even have any bleeding afterwards, it was such a simple procedure.

There is a lovely lady called Dr Omaiyma at Medicentres in Motorcity, young, American trained I believe. That's who we use for our children. We love her and she doesn't have an accent so she's easy to understand.

What about traffic? I think AR's is one of the easiest places to get in and out of. AR's is set up on the roundabout and you have easy access to all the major areas of Dubai via 311. I find it really easy to get to MOE, Dubai mall, MCC. What I can't deal with is traffic that makes it impossible to access my home, where I have to park my car all weekend and just take taxi's b/c the traffic around my house is too congested and deal with all the noise and chaos that goes with the traffic. Every family has to decide what they are willing to sacrifice to live in a certain area and for us AR's offers us the least amount of sacrifices. I really can't find anything I don't like about living here and I've lived in high rises and will NEVER do that again, and I've lived in stand alone villas in an all local area and was spat on by a 4 year old local while his older brothers cheered him on and I'll NEVER live like that again, and now we are in AR's and have no plans to ever leave here. It's quiet, safe, my children have a large yard to play in, we have friendly neighbors, and we have a large home that feels like the homes in the states that we are used to.

We were gone the last two weeks of July, all of August, and the first week of Sept but our August DEWA bill only dropped from 4600 dhs to 4000 dhs so they can't say ours was b/c of higher consumption since no one was home.

Yes, no problem at all with that area. If you go straight up Umm Suquiem you'll get into that roundabout where the Dubailand sign is that has the skier, space shuttle, motorcycle driver...you know the one? Anyway, you'll come up US road and go into the roundabout and if you follow the signs that take you to Dubai/311/Airport it will take you through the roundabout and up the little side road to enter 311. Don't enter 311, just stay to the right and that will take you directly into the main entrance of AR's where JESS school is at. At the entrance go right and you'll be on the backside of the community center. You'll come to a T in the road, go left and follow that around to the golf club. Very easy to find.

Are you talking about coming up Umm Suqueim or 611? You can't take 611 towards AR and go left at the 311 roundabout anymore but you can come up Umm Suquiem from MOE and go into AR's from the Motor City side or go to the main AR's entrance from Umm Suquiem. The Ranches Ladies fayre on Tuesday 15th November is very definitely for the public. FREE entry ! Lots of lovely stalls! very reasonably priced coffee and cake! Lots of great raffle prizes. It starts at 10am and ends at 1pm. The golf club also do great lunches. I've put a link to a location map but its very easy to find as its signposted from the main gate to Arabian Ranches http://www.arabianranchesgolfdubai.com/Images/ARGC%20Map%20(4)_tcm4-2292.pdf Can we drive through the Khail roundabout from MOE side towards AR? I thought that roundabout was closed or is it open in that direction? What about coming back open or closed in the Umm Suquiem direction?

I've never been to the Meadows/ Springs area and found it very easily. I took one look at Google Maps and found it right away. I don't like when things are in hotels b/c I don't care to deal with the parking situation but I thought the EW fair was really easy to find and park. Perfect location!

I just bought a Wilton gingerbread house kit today at Tavola in the Springs/Meadows shopping center. Sorry I don't know what the name of the shopping center is but it's the one with the big Spinneys and Shakespeare restaurant. I paid 69 dhs for the kit.

You have to walk around inside the big tent. There were several vendors last week and had stacks of pumpkins almost as tall as me and larger than the back of a truck. I can't imagine they are all gone in less than a week.

I'm so glad you posted this. We moved into our home mid Feb and I met the landlord for the first time this week. She asked if we were interested in renewing the lease and I told her we were and she assured us they are going to keep this house as a rental (apparently they had thought about moving in but have decided to stay in their current home) and would renew our lease. Great. So on the way out the door she brings up the renewal again and casually mentions that the realtor will contact us and let us know how much the rent will be and he will let her know if prices have gone up and she'll decide whether the rent will go up or down. I told her if it goes up we'll move out and that she has to give us 90 days notice so we can find a new home. She starts backpedalling and saying, "Oh don't worry, it might not go up, maybe it will stay the same or go down, but don't worry, don't worry." So now am I understanding it correctly that she can't raise our rent when it comes for renewal this Feb?

I've been through this right now with our 3 month old. Drop ins, you can only get the flat bags that say breast milk storage bags. We had the kind that are shaped like a cylinder, like the shape of the bottle, and you literally just drop it in. The ones they sell here are flat and you have to fold the tabs over the bottle. They say 4 oz but they don't truly hold 4 oz. We checked EVERYWHERE in this city and can't find the cylinder shaped ones. So I finally got an Aramex account and ordered them from Amazon in the states. I had 400 shipped over and some next size up Playtex nipples. I got free shipping from Amazon to my US Aramex address and then it only cost me 105 dhs to ship everything here. That's the best you can do to get those pre-formed drop ins. Otherwise you'll have to use the bags. I can't help you with the baby water as we have home delivery of bottled water and use that. The Similac you can get at several places and I've found C4 to be the best place. We had DD on the gas and fussiness for her first 2.5 months and recently found out she has reflux and can't tolerate the milk based formula so we switched her to the Similac Advanced HA that is lactose free. The hospital had her on the gas and fussiness from day one. I can only find the smaller cans of the Similac for birth to 6 months but noticed once you start the over 6 months formula you can find them in the bigger cans. We bought several of the BIG Similac plastic containers from Cosco while home this summer. We have one left that is the gas and fussiness. It has been opened but I think we made one bottle before we found out 2 weeks ago that DD can't drink it anymore. If y'all come over for TorT'ing you are more than welcome to it. I hate to throw out that much good formula. And again with the thick Huggies wipes, you won't find them here. We brought our's from Cosco this summer and I'm down to one last pack and will have my sister bring another suitcase full when she comes this Xmas. They don't sell thick wipes like we are used to in the states. I've tried almost every brand here and even the ones marked "thick" aren't like the Huggies wipes. I did find one that is a decent thickness but they were grape scented and I couldn't stand wiping their bottoms with something smelling of grape.

Just to warn you though, once you go left at that roundabout you'll see an old nursery that has gone out of businsess and there is nothing out there. Just as you start to think the crazy ladies at EW don't know how to give directions, you'll start to see the souks. Don't let the empty building scare you. And don't go to the first souk you see, drive though and have a look b/c there is soooo much in there once you start to drive through it.

I make this flight several times a year but in business class. One thing that I do is request a special meal for the kids. The children's meal usually consists of chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese and the breakfast is more kid friendly. In coach you can upgrade to the first few rows and it's supposed to get you more leg room. I think it's called Economy Comfort. Make sure you have each family member signed up for the frequent flier program. You really rack up the miles on this flight and before long you can start using your miles to upgrade to business class and then you get the seats that fold flat into a bed. :) I have more problems with my boys on the ATL to Orlando flight b/c they are bored and are asking where their TV is. LOL

A fellow Texan!!! Yay! Le Marche in Arabian Ranches ALWAYS has Blue Bell ice cream, popsicles, and ice cream sandwhiches in stock. When I first got here, I found Blue Bell ice cream (being from Texas, Blue Bell really is the only acceptable brand of ice cream) at Choithrams. But we didn't have a freezer yet, so I just made a mental note that I could buy it at Choithrams.... Wrong! I haven't seen it there since. :( It's taken a lot of work, but I now manage to complete all of my shopping at Geant. The first few weeks, I made myself crazy driving to tons of different stores looking for specific American imports. But I finally started researching what local things could be used as substitutes for the ingredients I'm used to (i.e. labaneh for sour cream) and started trying to incorporate more local recipes into my menu planning. I still make American meals most of the time but I've found that trying local recipes is fun, easier, and often much cheaper. That being said, if I want good bakery cookies or sandwich bread, I send DH to Waitrose because no matter how many different brands of those items I try from Geant, what I can get at Waitrose is MUCH better.

Go to Lulu's in the morning when it's not crowded and you can take your time. I like to buy my salmon from there and my chicken. I go to the one by the MOE. I also find lots of American brands there and stock up whenever I see them. The key here is to have plenty of room in your pantry. I'm already stocking up now on food for Thanksgiving and Christmas and I've done that at Safestway, Lulu's and a little at Spinneys.

A better question might be 'where can I find X product?' - most of us make trips to several supermarkets to tick off all the boxes on our shopping lists on a regular basis. It's one of the things my friends back in the states can't quite understand why it takes me so many days to get my shopping done. Because I'm running around to all the different stores. LOL

Lots of products from the states. They had a big Mexican food section as well. Lulu's doesn't have a pork section. Spinneys in Motor City has Pop Tarts in their pork section.

I have a blonde hair, blue eye child and deal with this on a regular basis. I was in Gymboree in MOE and DH stayed outside with our children while I ran in the store. When I came out a family all had their cameras out taking pictures of my son with my DH standing right there. I was livid and told them get away from my children and delete the pictures. They got very mad at me and started talking to each other in a language I couldn't understand and they shot me dirty looks but I don't care. They have no business taking pictures of my children and my DH got an earful after that from me. He really didn't see the big deal about a family taking pictures of our children but I asked him to name me one time in all of our travels around the world that we have ever walked up to a random child on the street and took their picture. We have also been invited over to an Emirate families house that my DH works with the husband. The man's sisters kept taking pictures of my son during our visit and I found out a couple days later that the sisters used my son's picture as their online profile picture. It's just very strange to me that people would photograph a child like that AND use it online without the permission of the child's parents.

What about White Star (I think that is their name) down in the Blue Beach Center building on Jumeriah Beach Road. They always have a huge pile of costumes. I bought my son a Buzz Lightyear from there and paid 285 dhs. I should be shot at sunrise for paying that much. I didn't convert it fast enough and after I left I realized how much I paid and was sick. They are non refundable, no if, ands, or buts. Buzz doesn't even have wings and I saw much better ones at ELC for half the price. All the costumes at that shop were pricey. I don't know why I didn't turn and run.

Also, are you sure the reflux is under control? If not, ask your doctor to prescribe a PPI for your LO like Losec or Nexium, but make sure the dosage is enough to control the reflux - 10 mg a day broken into two doses to begin with, and increase if needed. Also ask about motilium to speed up gastric emptying. And if your DD's reflux is very bad, I recommend you see a pediatric GI. edited by lemondrops on 10/10/2011 I don't think it's under control yet. The doctor said it could take up to a week to see results of the Zantac and Thursday will be a week but we are still dealing with quite a bit of spit up. Not as bad as before but still lots. The other issue is that she was only eating 20 oz a day and the doctor said she should be eating 30 oz a day. Since the Zantac she's up to 26-28 oz a day so it's getting better. I've never heard of Motilium, what is that? She also takes Infancol with each bottle.
