mushypeas, that is actually really funny. Would have never crossed my mind that a human being would do that! I will get some healthy food in the fridge and tell her to eat it, and then leave her less than I had previously planned. We got her through an agency and I haven't given her ANY extra money in the 3 months she has been with us. After reading these threads, should I be giving her extra money (200 a month?) for phone, toiletries, food, etc? I know the agency doesn't pay her nearly what other maids are making.

It's like you are all speaking Greek to me, but I would love to know how to get shows on my iPad that I am not purchasing through iTunes...

Find a local teenager :-) Mine babysits once or twice a week for families we have met in the close area that she is comfortable with.

I thought about both of those. I offered to take her shopping and she said she would prefer to get it herself. As this is my first maid, I have to say (yes, I know I'm the boss) I'm hesitant to force a 37 year old adult to go to the grocery store with me like a child. And if she does choose to send all the money home and eat rice? Should I care? If I left my 14 year old DD with money for food she'd eat nothing but pasta for 2 weeks! Thanks for the feedback, though - nice to know I'm not crazy.

Can you tell me exactly where it is? I am in the Meadows and would LOVE to take the dogs out to run. Thanks!

We were given a 40 foot container, and I filled it to the brim. I think they had to crowbar the last of my cr** in there :-) But I don't know how competitive their prices are. For the dogs, I called a lot of services and this was the cheapest, and seemed to include everything that the others did. But, you can probably save $$ by doing more of it yourself - we used them for the full door to door service. Definitely lots of $$ to be spent once you are here getting all set up!

Typically she just eats what we eat, and I buy her anything she asks for. But we will all be gone for about 3 weeks, and then DH will be in and out the rest of the summer. I asked what she wanted to do about food and she said she'd like me to leave her money and she will cook. How much though? Thanks.

LOL, we had some of the same issues! We used World Pet Express for the 2 dogs and they were great, no problems at all. For moving company, we used Star International Movers (they actually helped us with that one). If you think they are unhelpful before you move, just wait till you are here... GOOD LUCK!

It is in Al Quoz, and they definitely have them (I was just there this weekend). It is a bit hidden, but I there is a thread with directions on here somewhere if you do a search.

I went to Lydia at Essa Beauty in JLT and it was wonderful. I think it was about AED350, I remember thinking it was under $100. She will assess your skin type and use the appropriate products. My skin is really sensitive and it felt and looked great afterwards.

I've bought it at Safestway before. And I agree, mall kiosks... I feel like I saw some in Times Square last time I was there.

Thank you, I will head over there on Saturday! One more question - where do I get the fabric from? I know it sounds dumb, but I haven't done anything like this here yet. It's a peachy/pink color... edited by Suzieq123 on 01/06/2012

I am so sad I didn't bring my car. There is so much here that is new, that it would be nice to be driving a familiar vehicle and not a brand new one! We have a simran 2000 transformer for the TV and a Terminator 1500 for the kitchen. We try to only plug 2 things it at a time in the kitchen just to be safe. I was told to add up or look at the eletronics you want to plug in, build in a buffer, and use that for how big of a transformer you need. Good luck with the move! Do you have kids that will be going to school here?

I've driven guests out to Bab al Shams and we really enjoyed it. There is a buffet lunch that is in the Entertainer - international food - so after walking around and lunch we headed back. It's a beautiful resort.

We brought our tv and use a transformer and an hdmi converter and it works great. My hubby wasn't giving up his tv either! We also brought some small appliances, and have a transformer in the kitchen for those.

I went to Satwa, much cheaper than enything else I saw, and reasonable quality as well. I think it was called Oman Trading... or something like that. If you go down Al Wasl, turn left at Iranian Hospital onto Plant Street, turn right when that street ends, and go straight... the road will curve to the left and the store is right there at the curve (on the right side). Good luck!

When my kids were little I had lots of older teenaged /20-some sitters... who were more interested in boys and using the phone and watching TV than they were in playing on the floor with my kids. Thats when I started using younger girls and my kids always loved them. My personal experience is that they were very very concientious. But maybe that's just me, and my experience in the States. I would be hesitant here as well.

I have a 14 year old daughter who has been babysitting since she was 11. She took the American Red Cross babysitter certification class and is a super responsible kid. She actually misses babysitting as it's just not that common here with nannies and such. We live in the Meadows and I would only let her sit nearby, but let me know if anyone is interested.

UAE2012 - yes! that's another one my MIL does - wraps jewelry in tissues and puts it in her pockets of clothes in the closet. JP1 great suggestions too. I'll keep that in mind when my MIL comes for a visit :-)

In between or under the sofa cushions is one of my MILs favorites. Money in the light socket (unscrewed and put in there). Hidden between the clothes. Really anywhere is possible - the mind doesn't think the way we do. Good luck, I have been through this and it is very frustrating.

Good luck, magicwand. ASD is the only one I know of - did you look at Collegiate American or Bradenton? Those I think are the only other possibilities as I know DAA does IB.

I have very sensitive skin so I haven't wanted to get a facial since moving here, but I tried Essa this morning and I have to agree with the rest of these ladies - Lydia was wonderful, my skin looks fantastic, and I can't wait till she adds more services on. I will definitely become a regular there.

My kids love jape go, and as they don't have a liquor license the wait is usually much shorter than the other restaurants. My 3 DDs are in the show so I will be there all weekend :-)

Suze63... I too had a thumb sucker. She wanted to stop but it was all in her sleep. After many many failures we had instant success... With DUCT TAPE of all things LOL. I put it on her thumb at night, with the seam of the cushy part of the thumb, and it no longer felt good in her mouth. She was done in days.
