Hello Ladies, Apologies if I am posting in the wrong place or on the wrong topic. My husband, two daughters and I are possibly (90% sure) we are moving out in 3-4 months. I was wondering how do I go about the process of attesting our marriage. We were married in the UK. I've tried to do research on-line but end up totally confused. Also do we need to get anyth9ing done to the girls birth certificates? Any help would be great. Thank you, Rach x The certificates have to be attested by the FCO in London (google FCO attestation and you'll get the address). You can pay online and get a reference number etc - they are very quick (although given thhat its not cheap I suppose its only fair!). The documents then go to the UAE embassy for attestation (again google for the address). They only accept payment via cheque or postal order (!) but turnaround is also pretty good. Whole process can be done within a week. I had my sons birth certificate attested...I'm unsure if its a requirement or not, but often safer to err on the side of caution! Also if either of you have a degree, it also has to be attested.

You can definately do it, I think its just up to Immigration based on your individual circumstances. My gut feeling would be if you earn over 10k and live in a 2 bed (or bigger), then you are unlikely to have a problem.

Just wondering what people generally budget for general living expenses (incl groceries, petrol, salik, dining out) on a monthly basis? We're a family of 3 (2yo + maid) and try to stick to 6000aed per month. I sometimes feel this is a lot and others not enough (guess it depends whats on!) If it makes you feel better, this is also what I have been setting aside as general living/spending money (we are also a family of 3, but my DS is 12). I have been the only one working (until this week) and we have managed to get by ok...without feeling we were missing out on anything.

I sponsored my husband when he first came out in August (and he has only recently moved to an Employers sponsorship). I'm not a manager etc but my salary is over the 10k. I had to submit attested marriage certificate and tenancy contract (ejari). My husband came out on an entry permit (even though he's British too) and this was then converted to a residence visa. (This eliminates the need to leave the country...if he's already here? I'm not really clear, as he could have arrived on a visit visa, but I think there are issues with converting a visit visa) My company arranged the permit and the visa, but I had to pay 2000 dhs security deposit (exactly the same as you do for a housemaid - I followed exactly the same process for her, even though she too was already here). I was told by Immigration that a man under his wives sponsorship cannot work even with an NOC (on the visa it states 'Muhrem - not allowed to work') I dont believe wives sponsored by their husband have the same restrictions, but its worth checking direct with DNRD

My husband will be interviewed next week for a Business IT manager position "Grade 10" at Emirates Group . We have 3 kids(9,5 and 2). They claim they will provide accommodation, Transport allowance, utilities allowance, Health- dental care and school allowance. I would like to know what salary range do they offer for this grade? and what is the minimum salary to be able to survive in Dubai? Thanks once again for your time and energy and sorry for the inconvenience edited by vildadalen2013 on 20/01/2013 My understanding of a Business IT Manager position (based on those I work with) is it is a Grade 9, not a Grade 10, but both are Management Roles. On my own experience I would expect the salary to be around 20-25K, with a further 11k as the housing allowance. There is transport as well, but I dont know how much (prob. around a further 1K). Schooling is seperate (about 40k per child) and medical is provided for all the family. Utilities/DEWA etc are only covered if you live in Company Accommodation, in which case you dont get the Accommodation Allowance. I think at this grade you would be offered a villa, but unsure of the possible locations (I think they can be in short supply, and you may e encouraged just to take the allowance). I think while you are here for the first few weeks (in hotel) you can be shown the accommodation thats available.

Hi Suzieirl things seem to have settled down a bit here too!! DS joined scouts on Monday..so far so good. I'm hopeful that will provide a bit of company for him. And he has a birthday party this Friday with kids from school...so a positive move in that direction! We also attended a parents meeting at school yesterday, and he seemed happy to sit with a couple of other boys from his class while waiting for us! (Fingers crossed!!!)Still a few difficulties with wanting to speak to his mum constantly (not helped by the time difference), but I feel we are moving along (slowly!) How is your DS settling? has school got any better?

Hi, I want to go to Dragon Mart by Metro. How long does it take from Dubai Internet City MS to Rashidya and do I have to change lines ? Many Thanks Debbie It will take about 45 minutes to get from Internet City to Rashidiya, and theres no need to change lines. But you do know you'll then need to get a taxi to Dragon Mart, as its nowhere near the Metro? I'd think that will take another 10-15 minutes...

Thanks for the replies ladies.....now I have (yet another) question! Took the maid and had the medical done on Sunday, and paid for the 48 hr results. Its now Wednesday...no results! I also paid the 35 dhs which I believe was for the results to be delivered by courier (only found this out afterwards...wasnt given an option!) I had thought the results were just sent direct to immigration, but havent had an sms either....is this not the case? What do I do now???

Hi all I know it differs depending on how many lessons/fails etc but does anyone have a rough idea of how much it costs for a Sri Lankan to convert their drivers license to a Dubai license? Iv seen the fees from the RTA website but the driving school websites dont provide much info as to the costs of the lessons and roughly how many lessons are needed. Does anyone know of a rough estimate? My housemaid's husband wants to move here and he has a Sri Lankan license (which wont be able to converted) and Im hoping to give them a rough idea of the cost. Thanks EDI (Emirates Driving Institute) publish a list of all the fees/charges etc on their website (and there are a lot!!!). The mandatory 40 lessons costs about 2200 dhs but there is also registration, simulator training test fees etc etc.....we are looking at our maid learning to drive and I think we reckoned it would cost around 4.5k (assuming a first time pass!!!)

Stuart Marshall at Liquid Mortgages is excellent and should be able to help you. With regards to tax, you do have to pay tax on your rental income however you have a tax free allowance which is around 8,000 ie you can earn 8000 pounds profit from rental before having to pay tax. I was told that if you dont live in the UK you dont qualify for the tax free allowance.....but you do get the first couple of thousand in rental exempted.....is this not correct?

Suzieirl, Dont give up....my DS came home with a party invite yesterday (there is hope!!!!) which he seemed delighted with! And I've contacted the Scouts in AR (as suggested by another poster)....so he's game to give them a try! We are hoping to move to the Ranches In late April (budget permitting) and from all of the feedback etc here, I'm really hopeful this will be a positive change for us all! As one of the other posters also said, I'm also a full time worker, so I cant get involved with school coffee morning etc, so dont have the mums network to fall back on...and DS school is very small...only 11 kids in his class.....so not such a diverse pool of people to make friends with!

Well another day!yesterday DS came home telling me he found 5 friends at school yippee its over!! I was wrong,we went for a walk and he started to speak,he hates school, hates his teacher, hates dubai! lots of tears again,i talked everything through with him again DH did the same when he came home from work,we had dinner all ok. This morning at 6am he came downstairs in tears again,oh god, its so difficult, i wish i had a magic wand and make it all better, could have done with something a little stronger than coffee at 7am this morning!!! we are going to see his teacher on thursday as DS is worried about some subjects at school he doesnt understand and wont tell his teacher, hopefully this will help,he counted on the calender last night 102 school days left in Sharjah!!! 102 days of this and it will be the happy juice for mom instead of coffee! wish me luck:( I can also feel your pain. My step-son (12) moved here with us in August (leaving behind his mother and half-sister, although he had been living with us for some time). We had all discussed the move at length and believed that coming out here would be good for him (he had a lot of behaviour issues and associated baggage at home, and we thought the fresh start would be best). He's been at school since September, and DH and I had believed he was settling in. He went back to the UK at Christmas, and since he returne d a couple of days ago its been a nighmare. He now claims he hates school, hates Dubai, has no friends, misses his mum and wants to go back to Scotland. But he spoke to his mum last night, and she is still not convinced that going back to Scotland will be in his best interests, especially as he's only been here for a few months. Queue massive tantrum, tears etc (part of the reason she gave was that she believes he's still too immature to deal with life in Scotland) This morning he refused to go to school....although in the end he did, but this has pushed DH (who currently does the school run) and me to the edge. I'm now terrified that he is going to burn his bridges with the school here (he's on a trial for the year, due to poor reports from his previous school) and then where will that leave us? We know he could go back to Scotland, but none of us are convinced that it wont turn into a massive disaster. Apologies if this has been a bit of a ramble....I'm on my 3rd coffee of the monring!!!!

I realise these have probably been done to death over the years...but I cant find out exactly the info I'm looking for! I'm taking on a maid who is here on a cancelled visa.....what exactly do I need to do? Do I just apply for her residency visa (the info I got from Immigration also mentioned an Entry Permit....but surely she doesnt need that as she's already here!) She already has an Emirates ID which is valid until mid-February. Also, do Immigration provide the work contract for her...or do I supply that? Confused!!!! :)

We're in a 3E in Al Reem and ours was 140 last year and we've just renewed at the same price. however he's given us a years notice of a rent increase from next year. Do you really need that 3rd bedroom? The 2 beds are definitely within your budget and have a (very)small study on the ground floor that you could use as a maids room at a push. Alternatively what about Springs, not sure how far that is from your school or if there's a school bus service, but its a bit more central, prices are similar to the Ranches, perhaps a bit cheaper for some villas? edited by itsonlyme on 19/12/2012 edited by itsonlyme on 19/12/2012 After a drive round a few areas (including the Ranches) at the weekend, we have decided that this is where we want to live, and will push our budget up to 140k to try and accommodate this! I know it is do-able (although i am quite horrified at the amount of properties I've seen advertised at 160+ !!!! (having checked the RERA index...this is a bit ludicrous!) Anyone with any reccommendations for agents, landlords etc who will actually be helpful....and show us properties we can actually afford, would be much appreciated (although we wont be looking to move until late April....just thougth I'd get in early in case there is some lovely genuine landlord out there looking to secure a nice, quite Scottish family for the next few years!!!!) just curious... why do you need to get it unlocked? i was thinking of getting an iphone for christmas but i thought you can just put your sim card in them... is this not the case? anyone know if i buy and use an iphone here if i can also use it back in the states? Depends where you buy it....it has to be sim-free, otherwise you will need it unlocked (and usually you'll have to pay more for sim-free) If you buy it with a sim card included, or from one of the operators here (Du or Etisalat) you wont be able to switch the sim. Also, of the 4S has IOS 5 or later you may struggle to get someone to unlock it....I tried several places when my DH brought his over, and noone would touch it because it had the latest software.....however i eventually downloaded something from online (cost about 20 euros) and did it myself in about 10 minutes.

Do you have to leave the country, or would the amnesty also apply if you get a new visa? My DH will overstay before getting his employment visa, due to a muck up with his passport, but its more than likely the new visa will be issued before the end of the amnesty:)

Actually looking like Arabian Ranches might have to be our best option....if we can find something in a manageable price range. Rental prces there seem to be across a ridiculously large range (I've seen 3 beds in al Reem range from 110 to 160k!). It would work as there is the bus service to MoE, and then a short taxi hop (for maid and DS) to/from school. Anyone happen to have a nice wee 3 bed + study they'll be renting out for a reasonable sum from late April??

Check Dubizzle. Every now and again a villa comes up in Jumeirah usually Dh125k for 3 bed plus outside maid. Lootah villas. They are old villas but space is good and maintenance is great. I can try and get you the number for agent that deals with them so you can check on availability. HTH That would be fabulous if you could! I'm keen to try and get a villa if possible, as we have a dog, and while he has adapted ok to the apartment, I would like a little outdoor space for him! 9But not ruling out apartments completely!!!)

Depending on where its coming from in the UK....try contacting Emirates SkyCargo (if the sender is close to an airport). Actual price depends what your sending, but if its personal effects I wouldnt think it would cost more than about GBP200 (I could be totally wrong, but I think cargo rates for personal effects are quite reasonable....but you have to take/collect from the cargo offices). Courier is a premium rate product in air freight. If someone you know is travelling, they can send it cargo as excess baggage on the same flight, and thats even cheaper!!:)

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering what paperwork you brought to prove you lived there and how much proof they require? Thanks for your helpIt can be anything from income tax returns to school transcripts to utility bills. As I am an American born abroad, I had to prove 5 years lived in the US after the age of 14, which I did with school transcripts. This is purely curiosity on my part, but if your home nation (be it UK, US or wherever) wont recognise your child and issue a passport, what happens? How does the child get a passport as the UAE wont issue one either?

When I was looking for a driver in December last year I got two female applicants. I advertised in Gulf News, I think. They do ask for more pay (as they should). One was not willing to clean but was a good cook. The other one was prepared to clean but did not know how to cook. HTH, Lina Thats useful, thank you! We arent looking for anything major in terms of housekeeping...a bit of light cleaning would be ideal (no cooking required!), but if we have to pay for full time help then may as well have a clean house to go along with it! I will look into Gulf News

If you dont travel on the first leg (bus, plane etc) the airline (any airline) is entitled to consider you a no-show....and you could forfeit the entire ticket. You want to do a SWIFT transfer. You need the SWIFT code for the destination bank here (its usually listed somewhere on their website, or just call and ask them) and the IBAN number of your account. Not sure how it will be organised on your banks website, but I've done it via Nationwide and its very simple. They charged a fixed fee of GBP25 (regardless of the amount) and the funds cleared into my emiratesNDB account within 36 hours.

Hi our school knows that my son has ADHD and has been a lot of help, they put him apart if he has tests( he doesn't always want to and then stays in the class) and at least now he is not seen as a trouble maker, mind you we knew he had ADHD for a long time , since he's about six years old but we tried to stay of the meds and gave him eye q . He was ok and manageable till he turned 12 and then his grades started slipping. He never was an a student but managed ok. He has been diagnosed by a psychiatrist and he showed me that their brain just works differently, I probably have it as well. Please don't believe the posters that its your fault , your son is just born that way and I bet you that most posters don't even have a kid with ADHD so don't comment if you don't now how it is to have a ADHD kid! Ps my son takes concerta. My son also has ADHD and we informed the schools here while trying to get him a place. One was upfront and said they couldnt accommodate him, due to the limited amount of SEN resources vailable, but the school he is now in have been very accommodating. They have sat and discussed things with us, and are doing their best to help him settle. They've been honest and said they also need to consider the other children and if he were to start being disruptive they would need to review things, but so far, mainly I think thanks to the much smaller class sizes here, he seems to have settled really well. Runnernies - he also takes Concerta. Until now we've been using the supply we brought over from the UK, but I now need to get him a prescription here. Can you tell me which doctor you use, and how much they charge? (I'm guessing their will be issues with insurance, as it has to be a Psychiatrist who prescribes?)

No we're in Newbridgehills 2, so it's not noise from Spinneys. I'm trying to get my husband to test the rubbish chute theory with him going up a few floors to throw some away and me staying in the apartment to listen for "the noise", but so far he's not going for it lol Marie I'm also in Newbridge 2 and know exactly the noise you mean. I had also initially blamed it on the neighbours upstairs, but it is far too regular, always the same two short bangs. I cant believe its the garbage chute though, as they are on the opposite side of the building from my apartment across the car park. If this is the case, then for the partments on the desert side the noise must be deafening!!!!:)

I think for the real leather I was quoted 250 dhs (for six pieces cut to size). For the synthetic leather I paid 100 dhs.....main reason I tok the synthetic was the leather had to be sent somewhere to get it cut and he couldnt give me same day (but I was there late evening) I cant remember the exact store, but he had loads of sample books of all sorts of different fabrics etc, and a really good selection of colours in the leather.

There are a couple of places in Dragon Mart that will cut you pieces of leather to size (if you are happy to try and cover the seat yourself!) I did it, with synthetic leather, and a large staple gun, and it worked a treat!

At the moment I dont have insurance (as its a pre-existing condition which was diagnosed in the UK years ago) so assume then I can just get the repeat prescription without any problems!

Sorry if this may seem a foolish question, but having just had my first (very expensive) brush with the medical sector here, I'm keen to know what I'm in for! Both my DH and DS take regular medication. Back home we just call up the surgery, they make up a new perscription and we take it to the pharmacy to have it filled. However, I'm not clear how/if that is done here....can we just do the same? (at the moment both have sufficient amounts of medication brought over from back home, so havent been to a doctor yet) Realise we will have to visit a doctor initially to set up the prescriptions, but surely we dont have to pay for consultation every month?! How much does it cost to get a prescription filled here? (medication is NOT available over the counter)
