Has anyone had to pay for a blood sugar test (to measure diabetes) and could give a rough estimate of the cost here? Also the annual chiropodist check-up given for diabetics. Insurance here wont cover it, so weighing up the cost of paying for it versus a flight home!!!!

Do they have to include details of your prescription etc in the package? We would just be having MIL collect the script from the GP, collecting the medication, and mailing it off to us. We wouldnt have either the prescription (as the chemist wont give it back) or any invoice, as we wouldnt be paying for them I've tried asking FedEx about import requirements....but they started going on about invoices and perscriptions at source (even though I will arrange everything here)...i'm not sure if we are at cross purposes or not!!!

Is that the one just before SZR...where the vehicle testing centre is? I assume this is the same one which can issue driving licences??:\: I understood that Al Barsha was the only offic ewhich would convert his licence to a UAE one without asking for the Emirates ID card (he has the registration form, but the card isnt through yet)

as a visitor (ie not got visa yet) you cannot drive with uk licence a private vehicle, you can only drive a rental car. only uae driving licence can drive private cars. RTA have told me with Uk and IDP I can drive our own car if on visit visa until the point that residency visa is applied for, and insurance said as long as RTA fine then insurance is valid. (3 times I called them to make sure I got the same story each time)x no before you could get a temp licence but they have stopped that, you cannot use your uk licence was residence visa is started, then you must apply for uae licence was you have visa. This isnt correct. RTA told me last week that you can drive a first degree relatives (e.g. husband, parent etc) UAE-registered car on a UK licence and be fully covered by insurance. If you have an International driving licence you can drive any UAE registered car. Both only apply while you dont have your residency visa...after that it gets messy!!!

Morning Agency maids who charge hourly will continue to do so whether you have them 2 hours a week or the entire month! So it can work out really expensive. They might do a flat rate for monthly so best to ask the agency. Thank you for your reply. I did ask the agency and they said 1500 dhs a month. I was wondering if there is a cheaper way to do it . My Budget is 1000 dhs. Can i ask which agency you are using, and how many hours a day this was for? I will be looking to get a maid for about 3 hours a day (I'd love full time as I think its more cost effective, but only if you can have a live in, and unfortunately I dont have a maids room in my apartment!) ;)

That makes perfect sense....I foolishly took the sat nav's advice to drive home that way instead of down the Airport Road.....wont be doing that again!!!

Dc have you checked that you actually need a prescription, many meds, normally only available by prescription in our home countries, can be bought OTC. My son takes ADHD meds and I can just buy it over the counter whereas you would need a script anywhere else. A GP should be able to help if not. Best of luck! Snugs can I ask what medication your son takes? My son also takes medication for ADHD and buying it over the counter would certainly make life easier!

You don't need marriage or birth certificates notarised, as they are issued by a registrar. Costs about £50 per document to cover both the FCO and the UAE embassy costs. Worth pointing out, the UAE embassy will only accept payment via postal order, they don't take cards or cheques! FCO you can pay online before you mail the documents. But turnaround at both is pretty quick.

Hi, I arrived in Dubai 2 days ago, just started work ....survived the ordeal that was the government medical, and now need to start looking at homes to rent. Does anyone know of any good properties (ideally a villa as I want some outdoor space, and have a dog!) which offer 2 bedrooms (either with a maids or study...so I can squeeze in a single bed). I think my best option is Springs, but if anyone has other suggestions, recommendations I'm very open minded! Still have to get my son into a school, but will have to do that simultaneously while looking for somewhere to live! If anyone knows of a good rental agent, I'd also be keen to hear, as many of the listings I've viewed online either don't show photos of the actual property, or use pictures which are clearly not the actual property!!! Help!!!!

I'm also looking for a low rental villa...at the moment my search is pretty much confined to the Springs....main reason being my DH doesnt yet have work (or car) and DS will prob. be attending school at DIA, or one in that area. are there any other alternatives, which can be managed on a one salary/one car household? (FYI my housing allowance is 90K pa, so don't want to go over this, at least not to start with!)

I met my husband (as of last year) at a funeral! Not the average place to be meeting new people, but it worked out well for us! Still together 10 years on!

Hi I'm about to make the move to Dubai (my flight leaves in 2 weeks!!!) and I'll be on my own for a few months trying to get things organised before my hubby and son arrive. Can anyone give me an idea of the cost of renting a car (4x4) for at least 4-6 months (I'm assuming I can get a better rate than the weekly/monthly rates shown online?) and any recommendations on where is best to go (especially being female in a strange country with no male back-up!!!) Thanks!:)

Hi, Without knowing your budget it is hard to tell you where to look, but we are moving in a month or so. I am happy for you to send me a personal email and you can have a look at our villa, but it will depend on what you have to spend. Hi Bunnykins My budget is pretty small at the moment, as only I will be working initially...so I'm looking at 80-90K per year. I know many of the houses in Springs fall into this bracket, so just a case of finding the right one! If you can send me details of your agent too, that would be really helpful!!!

Hi I'm also trying to find a position in Dubai, and have experienced exactly the same....uploading CV's onto websites and then sitting waiting for anyone to get in touch. DH and I are visiting Dubai in a couple of weeks and would like to visit a few agencies in person. Can anyone suggest any that would be good to try? I work in IT and he is in Railway Maintenance/Signal & Telecoms. Thanks!!!

Are any of you familiar with how the recruitment process works with Emirates? The position I applied for had a closing date of last week, so I was expecting to hear back from them after that, but on checking today I've just discovered its now closing on 9th April!!! Does this mean they didnt like any of the candidates and have decided to look for more.....or will they leave us (me!) waiting until the new closing date to get more applicants for final interview??? Any way of me finding out? (I'm not great at playing the waiting game, as you can see!!!!) First time applying for a job overseas....extremely nerve-wracking!!!!! :-)

Just to give a balanced view on this as it seems people are quite quick to come on and complain about Emirates (seems sad that they will put up with such an 'unbearable' situation rather than find a better opportunity, but each to their own...) I work for the Emirates Group and I love it. I work with great people, the work is challenging and the perks are good. I am not badly paid and I am not badly treated. My advice to you Suzimack is to assess the opportunity and decide for yourself whether it suits you. Since you have not mentioned what grade the job you are going for is, it's hard to predict what your salary and perks will be. And you always have the option of negotiating - each grade has a range of 'bands' and you can get quite different salary offers within the same grade. It's always good to arm yourself with all sides of the story but please don't be put off simply because of some of the negativity you've seen here. Explore it for yourself and I wish you the very best of luck! Hiya notthatbad, knew you'd be back again as soon as I typed, lol, nice to see you! Glad you still enjoy working at EK, but if I remember correctly you don't work in EG-IT. Each dept is different and I (as I have always stressed) was giving just my humble opinion and experience of that particular dept as the OP requested. EG-IT is a very different beast to just about any other dept. I am sure the OP would not make a decision simply based on strangers' opinions on a forum, however, the points I have raised are the truth, whether you like it or not regarding that particular department! Thanks to both of you for sharing your views. I'm keen to hear what everyone has to say, I'm well aware there will be conflicting views of any organisation (many of those in my current department have similar views, but are also happy to remain for whatever reason!) I'm pretty confident there is a potential for negotiation re the package offered, just wanted to see if I could get an idea 'up front' of what they may be likely to try and offer me (I already have figures in mind for what I'd be asking them!!!) I think the job will also involve some overseas travel, so I'd be looking for recognition/compensation for that (being away from home etc) What are the other elements of the package like? What assistance do you get with relocation? What is the accommodation/transport allowance like? I'll be bringing my OH with me (he hopes to be able to get a job himself, but probably not until we are already here) so I have to make sure we arent going to suffer financially, even short-term! Also have a dog, so a nice wee garden somewhere is a must!!!! :-)

Salary could be in the range of 17-18k AEd per month plus airline perks which you already are aware of working for an airline. so roughly calculated at 1 GBP = 6 AED. If you are single; no kids or pets then this should be good enuf for a nice living here.... Thats pretty poor, far below what I would be willing to accept...especially as I'm not single! Oh dear, not so promising then!!

Hi All, I'm new to the forum, and looking for some advice!! I'm currently in the middle of applying for a position with Emirates IT (closing date is today!!!) Already had a telephone chat about my experience etc. Having read a few threads on here about Emirates I'm now a bit concerned that my expectations for the job, salary, benefits etc may be a bit high!!! (I currently work for another airline, so the staff travel aspect is fine...its the financial side I'm interested in!!!) I currently earn over 30K GBP and would need/expect to see a decent uplift in this to justify moving overseas....am I deluding myself?? Also, expecting a reasonable accommodation/transport package to cover the rental fees I see as standard. Reviews of Emirates as a company to work for seem a bit mixed....whats the general consensus? Any comments/opinions/warnings will be greatly appreciated!!!!

I work for BA, and they would require you to let them know the child was turning 2 so they can ensure a seat is booked for the child once she/he turns 2, but you will still only pay the infant fare if the child was under 2 when the journey commences. Its a legal requirement for UK airlines that children 2 and over have their own seat (hence the need to notify them), but other airlines may follow different policy. If you want a seat for LO on the outward flight, then you'll have to buy a child fare.

Hi Babyrat Thanks for the reply, thats similar to what I'd read. My salary shouldnt be a problem, and I do have a degree as well. We all hold British passports, so I'm hoping this will all count in our favour! DH-to-be is looking for a job in Dubai too, so the hope is he will be able to get employer sponsorship as well. I assume then this would make it easier to bring his son out?! PS loving this website, loads of really useful info on here!
