Haha this thread cracks me up! It was always hilarious to see the ground staff's face when we opened the door especially at the end of a 14/15 hour flight - most of them stayed as far awhile as they could so they didn't get the initial hit of the stench!! The nicest thing was walking outside to the hit of fresh air after a flight (no matter how cold it was outside!)... bliss. Had to use the air freshner on more than one occassion but what is just as bad as one's bodily smells is when one has taken their shoes off or has stinking BO (worst is when you sit next to them). I actually hate to admit that my husband (who is crew) loves garlic but I do try to keep his intake to a minimum especially for a long flight. I will make sure even more so now!!

Emirates do have full fat milk on board but it will be a good idea to take your own as they may not have enough to give you for your DD (depending on how much she will drink) and for other passengers (and how much they want to drink). I think if you take the small cartons of longlife milk, you should be fine through customs here. I know this may not be the best option, but what about powdered milk (e.g. anchor) and then you just need the water?

Sorry to hear that things are not better with your DD. It does sound as if the lactose is upsetting her system (especially if she only started having these problems since she's been on the formula). To be honest, she sounds like me. I found that my body could cope with dairy products early in the morning but by the afternoon (and definitely in the evening) I was in absolute agony with bad cramps, gas and nausea. My stomach was so bloated at times, that I often looked like I was 4 months pregnant (which I certainly was not!!). I also had constant sinusitis with ear problems which cleared when I went on a lactose free diet (I can cope with little amounts now). I also didn't sleep well at night. My main issue was with milk. So maybe try changing her formula and see if that helps. With my DD (5 months), she started to be 'uncomfortable' so we went through quite a few formulas to find one that suited her. I hope that she doesn't follow me with my food issues, as I am celiac! I agree with the others about keeping a food diary. Hope she is feeling better soon (and you as well) and you can figure out why things are happening. Please don't feel quilty - she had a very good 11 months of breastfeeding!

Sorry to hear about your baby's hole in the heart. I know how scary it can be to hear that there is something wrong with your baby. While I was pregnant, I was told there was a problem with my baby's heartbeat. I can recommend Dr Al-Khayat. I saw him at Al Wasl. I can also highly recommend the FMMU at Al Wasl. They were very knowledgeable, indepth and understanding. They will do indepth scans of the heart and make sure the baby is developing well in all other areas. Good luck and wishing you all the best. And I hope you get all the advice you need. I think that if you are not 100% comfortable with the information given to you here, then definitely seek advice in your home country.

Go THE MIGHTY ALL BLACKS!! I think this game will be more exciting than the final to be honest. NZ are the best playing team of the RWC so far, and although the Aussies haven't played their best (up until now that is!), they will bring every thing out tomorrow. So it will be a very tough game!! Lets hope that the Wallabies don't break their 24 year loss at Eden Park tomorrow night... let the Eden Park curse continue!

She was taking feeds around every 3-4 hours. I've tried to offer her little and often feeds, but with no luck! I forgot to mention she is also fully formula fed since just over two months of age and has been kept on the same brand (Novolac AC). Her usual routine (for the past few months at least) when she wakes up is feed, play/activity and sleep. Last night she slept the whole night without waking but then only had 120mls when she woke up. She is still only small, but now weighs 6kgs. But she has more than double her birth weight. She just woke up from her nap and took 20mls and won't take more. So will offer it to her again soon. She doesn't seem to get hungry anymore. I guess I will keep offering it to her and see if she will take it. She is not showing any hunger cues either. After reading the threads about the four month sleep regression and the dummy (DD has one but only uses it when I first put her down in her cot) it has been very interesting and helpful! She is generally pretty good when she goes down to sleep but if she does wake up during the night, I won't give her back the dummy. She is also learning to go to sleep without it as when she spits it out, I will leave it (but the afternoon nap is the most difficult to get her to settle so sometimes I revert back. I must stop that soon!!). She is normally sucking on her hands anyway! If she wakes during the night, which is not often (touch wood, but have probably just jinxed myself now!), I will let her be and have her talk away. She doesn't normally wake and cry at night so that's why I thoought that she must have been hungry (after checking if there could be other factors). I'm thinking to whether or not to start getting rid of the dummy now. Thanks for your replies and help Edited to add: She was a bit grizzly while rolling over (she sometimes gets one arm stuck!) so offered her bottle again and she took 80ml. So I think I will have to keep offering it to her and see if she will take it. edited by suznz on 10/10/2011

My 4 month old DD has started to be really fussy this past week with her eating. She went from drinking approx 150-160mls to 70mls or 100mls, if I'm lucky, 5 times a day. The morning feeds are generally good where she will have 160mls but things just get worse from there throughout the day. I'm not sure what to do or when to start really worrying. She still has wet diapers, however in the afternoon it starts to become slightly less (as expected as her intake is less) And I don't think she has lost weight. She usually sleeps through from 8pm to 6.30am but this past week has been waking at 3 or 4 for a feed as she isn't getting enough before bedtime. She amazed me two days ago, when she was drinking 160-180mls at every feed (she even had 6 feeds that day!) and I was thinking that things were good again! Haha... she lured me into a false sense of security that she was going to eat!! I don't want to force it as I don't want her to get a phobia of the bottle/food (if it's possible at this age?) but am starting to get concerned. She's also just had her vaccinations at the beginning of the month. Has anyone else experienced this at this age? Should I take her to the dr or wait it out? My main concern is about her becoming dehydrated... Your help is much appreciated as now I'm starting to worry! Edited to say: She is a very happy baby and reaching her milestones (it was actually today that she rolled from back to tummy and vice versa on both sides and won't stop!) I'm a very proud mummy! edited by suznz on 09/10/2011

I had some tearing during my delivery and my stitches took about 40 days to dissolve completely. I wasn't too sure if my dr said 14 days or 40 days - turns out it was the latter! 14 days came and went with them still there, not looking at all like the were dissolving. So then I knew it was actually 40 days! But agree with moonbean, have a look and see if you can see them. If your still not sure, then head back to the dr to get them checked. HTH

Yes you can get it here. I've used it but can not remember which shop I bought it from! Think it was from a chemist rather than an optometrists. Hope you manage to get some. If I remember where I got it from (or see it somewhere), I will let you know as I need to get some more solution soon!

I had severe pain as well after the removal of both my bottom wisdom teeth. I lived off very strong pain killers (think I took brufen!) for the first few days. How long ago did you get them removed? For the second tooth, I sat for 48 hours with a packet of frozen peas attached to my jaw! - it helped tremendously with the pain and the swelling and the recovery was much quicker. After the initial first few days, I then found the stitches really painful as I had a reaction to them (they didn't give me dissolvable ones). They were very sore until the came out 10 days later. Hope you recover quickly and feel better soon.

We just got our dd's residence visa last week. We were expecting it to take a week, but for dhs80 extra you can get it within the hour (which was brillant!) It was approx Dhs540 - for instant urgent visa stamp. He went to the immigration office in Bin Sougat Mall, Airport Road (before Rashidya metro station). He said it was very quick and easy. You need to take a salary certificate (directed to Immigration and Foreign Affairs), birth certificate (attested from MOH and Foreign Affairs if born UAE), marriage certificate (attested from Embassy), copy of both residence visas, passport photos and of course, the passport! Proceed to the typing section first and then wait to see the officer. The whole process will take around one hour. I was very surprised to see my DH back home so quickly! Hope this helps - it is much easier than getting the birth certificate!!

You sound a bit like me during my pregnancy!! How many weeks are you? I was lucky enough not to suffer from morning sickness but I did end up with headaches quite often. The best thing I found to do is drink a lot of water as I found mine were largely caused from dehydration. Around my fourth month, I had a cold which I just couldn't shake and ended up with both a throat and sinus infection. It took longer to go as I tried to avoid taking medications. I was admitted to Al Wasl (with DVT) and on the first visit they discovered I had a urinary tract infection. The doctors told me they are very common during pregnancy (I've never had one before, but I had no symptoms during this one but rather what I was experiencing was from the DVT in my pelvis instead!) I found that eating smaller healthier (well tried anyway) snacks/meals throughout the day, made me feel a lot better. For the sinuses, try to cut down on the dairy as dairy products makes it worse (cheese, icecream, milk). I took calcuim tablets towards the end (mainly because of the injections that I have to take and also as dairy makes may sinuses really bad). I hope things start to get better for you! Make sure you get lots of rest and look after yourself x edited by suznz on 31/07/2011

It shouldn't be a problem especially if it's accompained with a dr's certificate but double check to see if there are any other requirements. I'm also on clexane 60mg but my doctors won't give me to approval to fly which is a shame as I would have loved to have gone to a friend's wedding! But then they've extended the time that I have to be on the injections (they want to do the tests to see if there is a cause of the DVT first and then go from there)! Lets just say I wasn't too happy when I found that out!! Hope it is all going well on them (I'm now covered in bruises and lumps and definitely not wear short shorts and trying to avoid short sleeve tops that show that part of my arms!). Do you order them from Life Pharmacy in Uptown Mirdif by any chance? Just got some more and the pharmist said that there was someone else who was also on clexane 60mg. Have a good flight.

You can have up to 30kgs check-in luggage and the max hand luggage is only 8kgs. They have just started weighing hand luggage (before you go through immigration) to any bags that are on the big side or look heavy. But they are ok in DXB airport if you are a bit over! Definitely not in Auckland Airport however!! Also tell her to take a larger handbag as they don't worry about handbags! edited by suznz on 12/07/2011

If you like a really laid back, beachy place... I would recommend staying on the Coromandel Peninsula. It is a couple of hours drive from Auckland. There are some lovely white sandy beaches and towns and the scenary is native NZ bush and of course, Pohutukawa trees! Hot Water Beach is one definitely worth seeing! Places worth staying/visiting are Hahei, Whitianga, Whangamata, Tairua, Cooks Beach, but the most upmarket is Pauanui. All have self catering homes/accommodation available (but be in quick as they go very quickly for this time of year). You can have relaxing/romantic walks along the beach. Visit art galleries and learn more about the history in the Coromandel Township. Still enjoy the odd coffee at a cafe. You can hire bikes and bike around the areas as well. A website that may help is www.thecoromandel.com and the Tourism NZ website. All have shops for food (especially for a kiwi BBQ and icecream!) The Coromandel definitely has the relaxed, true NZ feel to it! Ooooh... I wish I was able to go home for the Christmas holidays. I miss those summer holidays down there (on the Coromandel - use to go down there almost every year)!! edited by suznz on 10/07/2011

I was only in your position a few weeks ago! My DD is now just over 4 weeks and the first few weeks were tough! Her birth weight was only 2.64kgs and she dropped a bit but never put it back on until 3 weeks (now she weighs approx 3.6kgs!) I am breastfeeding, however, I am having to top up with formula after a feed every so often as she can actively suck/feed for 45 minutes (sometimes an hour) and 5 minutes later is starving hungry. She too has gas and we are about to try infacol drops and see if that helps. The first week, we were in and out of hospital and I was so worried that she wasn't going to be allowed home because she wasn't sucking properly (breast or bottle) to help with her jaundice and therefore wasn't putting on any weight. This feeling continued until she was weighed (at 3 weeks) and had put on around 340 grams. The average is 170 grams! So I can feel with you what you are feeling now! I have just been to see the Paediatrician about the amount of gas and as she has mild thrush, who said that the colour of the stools and the amount isn't that important unless it's black, has blood in it and it's a constant diarrhoea (like 6 times a day). My DD also has quite runny stools and was worried that she will be dehydrated at times but now feel a bit more relaxed! It's not that bad! The dr also told me that your liquid intake is much more important than food. I'm the same as you and can not eat big meals (the thought of it makes me sick!) Don't get me wrong, I do eat but will pick more at things during the day... chocolate being one of those! I have reached the conclusion that I am going to eat the things that I want to eat (in moderation of course - like chocolate for example!) as I do believe that 'a happy mummy has a happy baby!' Water is essential to drink, along with any liquid. I totally agree with what Meals and Hello.Again.Kitty have said. And I will take their advice too!! Thank you! Also see a LC (if you're not already doing so). I found mine to be a big support in the first few weeks as although breastfeeding is the most natural thing to do, it can be very difficuilt too! I still feel a bit disheartened after having her feed from the breast and then straight away have sometimes up to 100mls of formula. But I have to make myself stay positive, thinking of all the benefits, and not give in to the bottle!! Don't worry too much (I'm trying not too as well!) and hope things are ok. If you would like to meet up (for some support and a much needed coffee) I'm always here! edited by suznz on 03/07/2011

I've seen two gastroenterologists in American Hospital, the last one being Dr Dinesh (excuse spelling!) Have also seen a Dr in Lebanon regarding this as well. The dietician in AH is very good - I found her to be very helpful in confirming the diagnosis as well when they were questioning it (due to a false negative biospy as I had stopped eating gluten (or thought I had by not knowing that it is in almost everything!) for about 5 months before the first endoscopy and colonscopy. Dr Dinesh was very helpful and understanding especially when I was experiencing further problems (and the main thing was that he actually listened to what I was experiencing and looked further into everything as it wasn't normal! He later diagnosed IBS as well). I hope this helps. Having been on a strict gluten free diet has given me my life back (as it was largely centred around the bathroom and not actually eating anything when away from the house!) Good luck

A few years ago, I could not eat anything at all without having to be in a very close proximity to a toilet! I wouldn't even have to finish eating before I had to run! I had constant diarrhea (with bleeding) and felt like I was stripping my insides away (so if it's too much!) I also had severe acid and the start of ulcers. My stomach problems went on for just under two years before the drs sent me to see a specialist (as I travelled a lot for my job, I was constantly told that I had an upset stomach and food poisoning - after going and being told this about 8 times I was losing my patience) and finally sent me to American Hospital. In a year and a half, I had two colonscopies, three endoscopies and a camera thingy (which records the whole process). I had already cut a lot of gluten from my diet so the biospies were not very clear whether it was a gluten allergy or just and intolerance, but I did genetic testing which confirmed Celiac Disease (Celiac is actually hereditary and can go underlining for years before people realise). At the time I was diagnosed, I could not eat any gluten, lactose or fructose - so I was not eating much at all apart from lots of vegies, fish and meat! Bland and boring! But since we found the main cause of all the issues, the other intolerances have gone although I can only have very small amounts of lactose every now and again. Since being 100% gluten free (can not even have the smallest amount) I have been 100% better. I know when I accidently eat something that I'm not suppose too. Most women are not able to tolerate wheat and therefore break it down. It is a gluten intolerance that has become more 'comon' not necessarily being allergic to it. They now say that you should not give children under the age of 1 any wheat, as it is too hard for their bodies to break it down and stays in their system for a long time. If you think you an intolerance/allergy, I would see a specialist first before you cut out the gluten as if they do a biospy (for celiac) if won't come back positive as once you cut out the gluten, the damage done to your intestines has repaired itself (you need the gluten in your system to be able to see the damage caused by it). Cutting out gluten from my diet has made me feel like a 'normal' person again! Yes, going to out to eat at restaurants is not easy sometimes but it has taught me cook and actually take an interest at what I am actually eating (I have to read the labels of everthing)! It is amazing how a type of gluten is almost in everything!! edited by suznz on 30/06/2011

Al Wasl is definitely the cheapest hospital if you do not have insurance that will cover your pregnancy. I just had my dd there on the 1st June and thought the care we both received was very good (I didn't have insurance as it was cancelled by my employer when I declared my pregnancy). The antenatal package costs AED5,000 and for a normal delivery it is AED7,000 (I think it's AED10,000 or 11,000 for a c-section). I was also admitted for a week during my pregnancy and thought the cost was very reasonable. When looking for insurance while pregnant, we found that there was only one company that would insure a pregnant woman but there fees were too high (I think it was Daman). Although Al Wasl would not have been my first choice, the care I received for myself (I was high risk with DVT and preeclampsia and ended up having to be induced at 38 weeks) and my baby (who had an etopic heartbeat) was second to none. I hope you can sort something out with your insurance company. Good luck and all the best with your pregnancy

I understand exactly where you are coming from! Two weeks on and I'm thinking of giving up completely - we are on a formula top-up still at the moment - and going fulltime formula. But I have to think of the benefits of bfing (to my baby and myself!) I'm determined that we will eventually get bf exclusively... thinking positive thoughts... positive thoughts!!

I would just like to say congrats on your pregnancy! And also think about booking into a hospital here just incase you can't go home for any reason (Al Wasl, for example, requires you to have booked in at 28 weeks)! I say this from personal experience as it happened to me! And I was not prepared to have my baby in Dubai. I was actually going back to NZ to give birth and in the same week I was due to fly home (at 29 weeks), I was admitted to Al Wasl with DVT where I stayed for a week and was not allowed to fly home (and still not allowed for another few months!) Al Wasl was questioning whether or not they were going to admit me as I was past their cut off point and had not booked. Luckily, they did and I ended up with a positive experience, for that week in hospital and for the delivery of my little girl! I'm not saying to stay in Dubai (which it worked out better for me in the end!) but just to think of the possibility of something happening and booking into a hospital just incase. It will save a lot of unwanted stress at a later date! Good luck with your decision and only you know what is best you, your husband and your baby!

My little princess, Emilia Rose, was born at 5.04am on 1st June two weeks early (I had to be induced due to high bp and increasing uric acid, and also thought she was very small). Not the plan I would have liked, but she arrived safe and sound! Went in for a check up of her heart beat (which was fine!) but was not allowed to leave the hospital! She was 2.64kgs, so slight larger than they thought. We are both doing very well except they wanted to do ECG on her heart and it came back with a minor issue which they will repeat tomorrow. We were going to go home today, but thought it was best to stay another night (which was a good choice as as present she is undergoing light therapy for jaundice). She is just beautiful and my husband and I are besotted with her! Hope everyone has a good last few days/weeks x

I will let you know in a few days what it's like to give birth at Al Wasl - was admitted today and will be induced in the morning! Was expecting the inducing part after yesterdays appt but not the admitting part from today! Was not prepared for that! Luckily my husband gets back in the morning so at least he will be here for the birth. Very excited and petrified at the same time! Don't know how I've ended up in the small percentage of pregnant woman who get not only DVT but preeclampsia as well!! But as long as hubs is healthy even if she is a little small, that's all what matters! Care again has been very good...

I was admitted to Al Wasl at 29 weeks with DVT and there was a question if they would even admit me then as I was not booked there. Luckily they did, but it is worth booking and registering before the 28 week. I found the care very good but will let you know about the delivery in hopefully a few weeks time! Just over 37 weeks now! All my appointments have been at the hospital, but I think that is because I'm high-risk. So far I've found the staff to be very helpful especially at the FMMU and the scans. Just waiting the labour now - so will let you know!! Hope all is going well! edited by suznz on 26/05/2011

Hi Starsouthern, I'm doing well thanks! Just can't wait to meet the little girl behind the bump!! The DVT was in my pelvic area which went down my left leg. It started as a pain (in pelvis and upper leg) which I thought that I had originally pulled a muscle in that area. I rested it for the day but it wasn't getting any better. The next day, I could hardly walk on it and my leg felt dead and numb. Again I kept off it as much as I could and by that evening my DH took me to the hospital. They primarily diagnosed it as a UTI after doing a urine test and started me on a course of antibodics. What we didn't notice (neither myself or the drs) was that my left leg had started to swell. When I got home and got undressed, I noticed that my calf and thigh was twice the size. I've never had a UTI before, but thought these symptons were rather off and extreme for that! Thinking that because I hadn't used it or elevated it much that day, didn't think of the seriousness of it! Kept it up all day, but by the afternoon it had swollen up even more and the pain was unbearable. As soon as my DH had finished work, I made him come straight home and take me back to the hospital. They admitted me with suspected DVT and started treatment that night (in case it was as I didn't the normal, straight-forward symptoms) and it was confirmed the next day via a scan. The DVT went from above my pelvis down to my knee with my lower leg about to attach to the clot, so almost my whole leg. I was admitted for 8 days too make sure that the clot would not move upwards towards the major organs. You would know from the pain and the swelling if you had one! But the care I received at Al Wasl was really good. We were most impressed. And the fact that they booked me in as well, as I was not registered at any hospital to give birth as I was going home the week that all this happened. We had to pay the Dhs5,000 for the antenatal (which we are using now of course!) and have appointments every week or so (either with the specialists or antenatal drs) but things are starting to look better. Babies heartbeat has now corrected itself! So now to concentrate on the birth plan... Hope things are going well for everyone

I'm also due on the 14th June and going to deliver at Al Wasl! Was planning to go back to NZ for the delivery but ended up being admitted to Al Wasl with DVT last month (only a few days before I left!) But am actually very happy with the care that I received there. Baby also has an etopic heartbeat, so my seemingly easy pregnancy went from easy to high-risk overnight! This is our first, so not looking forward to the labour... but does anyone?! have had BH since 16 weeks but now I've noticed that they are getting stronger, more intense and frequent. Thought she could come the other night, but luckily the contractions started to ease off later in the night after they were coming all afternoon. Is anyone else as impatient as I am? I want to hurry up and meet this little person... But only another month to go....

I get it from Life Pharmacy. They normally have one or two boxes in stock (in the bigger ones like Al Wasl Rd and in Mirdif) and then they order in the rest (I've ordered 28 boxes last month and now again for this month, as I would rather get them in bulk so don't have to constantly be thinking about them!) They normally take a day or two to come in. And when I ordered them last night, they said that they had over a hundred of them available in their store room. So at the moment, they have a lot. Hope this helps.

I finally saw a dr yesterday who knew what they were talking about and who took the time to listen! I was already feeling a bit more relaxed after your posts - so after all my worrying, it should be safe to breastfeed. I was just a bit worried as the dose of Clexane is quite high and having to take it every 12 hours (especially for the 6 weeks after the birth)... On another positive note, baby's heartbeat has corrected itself! Thanks again

We have searched the lobby and the adjacent staircases of the building so I'm sure it's not there anywhere. I sliding to the idea that it perhaps got left in the lift during the move and not taken out by the time the doors closed & the lift moved floors and someone has found it and doesn't know who it belongs to! Have put up a sign in the lobby but am going to go round to the apartments today and ask if they have seen it anywhere. Will also see if maintenance or the cleaners have seen it. Hopefully it will turn up soon! Positive thinking...

It is still one hand! You are also allowed to stand to on your tiptoes too if that helps!!

I am also gluten free and finding good bread is a challenge!! I think you are doing the good thing of making it (I'm not really a big bread eater, but then again I'm just too lazy to make it myself!!) Some of the bread is very hard and solid, and some are like eating cake and very crumbly. But Lulu in Khalidya (excuse spelling) has it and it's not too bad and the price is probably better than the Organic Cafe. But I think baking it would be nice!! Bring backs memories of the smell of baking bread growing up!!

Hi Is anyone else as desperate as I am to find out the baby's gender??!! The two of us (and my side of the family) can't wait as none of us are very good at surprises at all! But I'm just worried that it could be wrong - does anyone know if that happens very often? If they are told they are having a girl and then it comes out a boy??!! But only 2 and a half weeks to my next scan to find out - can't believe that I'm already gone 16 weeks and I still don't have a bump! I want to start showing as then you can see a reason why I feel tired all the time!! Hope everyone is having a good pregnancy and it's not too rough...
