You can get baby panadol no problem. From Oz I used to bring clothes, shoes, kids' SPF 50+ sunscreen and UV protective swimming costumes/hats, mortein, tea tree oil (think you can get it but I like Aussie ones), child friendly mosquito repellent and eucalyptus edited by tamieg1 on 12/08/2014

- Decent quality kids' shoes & clothes in enough sizes to last next the year (which are half the price at home as they are in Qatar) - birthday cards (limited choice) - things to make your house more homely ie soft furnishings, pictures etc - yes you can buy them but if you've got space it's nice to have your own stuff Most importantly, a sense of humour and a LOT of patience!

As no one else has replied... I think a bigger issue will be finding a nursery that suits your hours. Nurseries with "late" pick up tend to close at 3. Most nurseries are closed for the holidays but check the Doha Mums Nursery Guide anyway. Many working parents find it easier to get a full time maid/nanny for this reason. On to your RP issue -are you sponsoring your family? Do you know if you will be required to have 6 months of bank statements before you can sponsor them? (As with everything in Doha there are no hard & fast rules - and what applies for one company or employer does not necessarily apply to all)

I always heard rumours of supplies at Megamart and a couple of pharmacies but never found it myself. We ordered it on Amazon and got it Aramex'd over, expecting it to be held up at customs, but didn't have any problems!

Nappies & wipes aren't too badly priced if they are regionally made. I would bring anything you feel you can't live without - for us it was a year's supply of Aveeno and Oilatum products. Bring clothes and shoes in all the next year's sizes, along with birthday cards (all ages). Toys are also expensive and there may not be the range available you are used to.

It depends on what type of health insurance your husband's company provides. I know that Qatar Airways medical insurance definitely does not cover maternity. The govt-run Hamad hospital is free and is supposed to be very good, and if Sidra ever opens it will specialise in women's health/maternity.

Usually they will appoint a nearby embassy to do it - for example until recently there was no Qatari embassy in Australia and everything had to go through Indonesia. I suggest you speak to your husband's HR department about exactly what they require in order to get your visa.

So what you're saying is you're not actually legally married? If you are legally married there is no way you will be able to have a UK civil ceremony... But yes a UK civil marriage certificate does suffice - however there may be other issues if your son was therefore born out of wedlock!!

Hello All, I am new to the forum – will be, hopefully, moving to Qatar in Nov/Dec 2014 - my husband will be, most likely, going in Sep. Both my husband and I are lucky to be quite ‘international’ in terms of our routes, families and life experience, with Scandinavian/ British/ Russian/ US / African/ME influences. After living in a small town in England for more than 10 years, I am getting excited about being, once again, a part of an international community in a cosmopolitan city. I look forward to not working for a while, but I am somewhat worried, at the same time, about being lost without routine / getting depressed – which I am a bit prone to, unfortunately. I have studied the Internet resources on Qatar tirelessly and got a lot of useful information – thank you to all for taking time out of your busy lives to contribute – I can’t tell how helpful and comforting your messages are. Below are the topics that I am still unclear about despite of doing the research. I will greatly appreciate any input you can offer. Apologies for the long list - hopefully most questions can just be answered yes / no. 1) Banking – I will be fortunate to be a kept woman while in Qatar – will I be able to have a bank account in my name or at least be ‘a name’ on my husband’s so I can get a credit card in my name? ==> yes, I had cards in my name attached to husband's account 2) Internet – I have heard that some Internet sites are blocked in Qatar – will I be able to access the following: - youtube; - ebay; - UK bank sites (Natwest, Tesco Bank, etc.); - access to films, such as US sitcoms – Seinfeld, Bid Bang, Modern Family (maybe not ;-) ); etc.; - gmail; - software downloads, like skype; - mindfulness /meditation sites that have Buddhist references. I will need to download files in advance if I am unable to access these in Qatar. ==> Never had any problems with those personally, however google "VPN" for alternatives 3) DVDs / books sent by air freight – are they really checked by the authorities and need to be catalogued? I really need my Startrek – hope there will be no objections to Capt. Picard, but who knows? The rest are things like Fraser, Big Bang, foreign language (Russian, French) films, with no English descriptions. What happens to the items that are rejected? 4) Food – we are addicted to salted / marinated fish. How do all of you Danish / Swedish people survive out there, in this respect? Is marinated herring available at all? Smoked mackerel, at least? I can make my own gravlax at home, if it is possible to by really fresh salmon? ==> Salmon available but probably not as fresh as you'd like 5) Air freight containers - is it advisable to send breakable items i.e. a TV set, porcelain, etc.? Do things get broken? ==> Depends on how well they are packed!! 6) Income tax – are the earnings in Qatar simply tax-free or do we need to investigate the issue further and get assurances from my husband’s employer? ==> You need to do research on this as it depends on where you're from (ie Americans have global taxation etc) 7) Wine – I understand the process around the permits, but how much does a bottle of wine cost in Qatar that is equivalent to £6-7 bottle in UK? ==> Around £20 at QDC and £40 in a hotel 8) Driving – I have read multiple opinions reflecting various degrees of dismay on the subject. My husband and I (together and separately) lived and visited a number of countries around the world. I am a nervous driver, but I am determined to drive in Qatar. In your opinion, what other countries the Qatar driving can be compared too? Driving in Russia is pretty intense. The city driving in France / Spain /Italy can be quite intimidating. I have just got back from Berlin – driving on the motorway there is really quite horrendous with people changing lanes in a split second maintaining the distance of only about 30cm while driving at 40km/h – quite scary (I was only a passenger). ==> Kinda has to be seen to be believed 9) Small business opportunities – I was thinking of ways to occupy myself in Qatar while contributing to the family income. I understand that the individual business activities are heavily regulated in Qatar (I am not sure to what end, exactly, as they do not seem to be too worried about collecting the income tax). However, through my education / life experiences, I am fairly familiar with bureaucracies of various kinds, and I realise that often there are no rational answers to be found. I was thinking of things like language lessons / babysitting. I do not have formal qualification in either, but I have experience. Do you think this will be possible without risking being deported? ==> Plenty of people do it although it is not legal 10) Mobile phones – will it be more sensible to buy a smart phone in the UK and unlock it? Will I be able to get a SIM only contract in Qatar? ==> No problem for sim only 11) Cat food – we feed our kitten (5.5kg kitten) the Nature’s Menu, which is about 70% meat /fish. Is it possible to by high quality cat food in Qatar? ==> Generally speaking tough to get good quality pet food, perhaps ask on one of the vet's FB pages (try QVC or Parkview Pet Centre) 12) Animal travel – will our cat be allowed to travel with us on the plane or will we have to ‘check in’ the poor creature? ==> plenty of posts on this if you search 13) Internet ordering / deliveries – is there a reliable way of sending parcels from UK to Qatar? I am thinking – clothes, shoes, cat food. Do Western mail order companies deliver to Qatar and, if so, at what cost? Do you order on Ebay from Europe? ==> Check out "Shop & Ship" from Aramex 14) Supermarket shopping – do they do Internet orders / home delivery? ==> Not like in the UK, some smaller supermarkets will deliver 15) Getting around without a car – if my driving phobia gets the better of me, what are the alternatives? How expensive are the taxis? Would it possible to have a reliable company / driver ‘on file’ to contact when in need of transportation? ==> the only alternative is to use public Karwa taxis or have a driver on file. Plenty of both around. 16) Is there a site similar to Ebay for buying / selling things locally? ==> Most prople use Buy/Sell/Swap sites on FB or Qatar Living. There are others around as well 17) UK credit cards – can they be used in Qatar – I am thinking about the first couple of weeks before we sort out the local banking? ==> Yes but check the fine print as you may get stung on the exchange rate 18) Internet connection- how good is it in Qatar? ==> Depends on where you live. For us 2MB was a good day 19) Travel by car to the neighbouring countries – exit / entry process for residents? If we have visitors staying with us – will they be able to travel to the Emirates, etc. in the car with us? ==> Plenty of posts on this too 20) Beaches – where is the nearest good swimming / sunbathing beach to West Bay? ==> Intercon beach is popular for Ladies Day Thanks again in advance for all your help. Hope this helps, good luck with your move

Hey there tamieg1, didn't know you've left! I checked in to EW to run a search on something yesterday and browsed the Qatar forum. We're actually going to drive yet again to Qatar, possibly early next year! :o) Missing the shwarma shop at the Abu Hamour. Would you ever return for a visit, at least to some place in the middle-east, you think? Definitely on a stopover but unlikely to live in the region again... It will be nice to come back and show the kids where they were born at some point :)

You need to make sure your credit cards/loans are cleared before you can cancel your RP. My husband cancelled mine a week before we left and his own 2 days before we left, making sure he had the deposit cheques banked from both our landlord and Kahramaa before cancelling it. Kahramaa was fairly straight forward - he went to our local branch at 7am, by 7:30 someone came to the villa to take the final reading. Unfortunately they also turned off the electricity and water after doing the reading and we hadn't finished moving out... The movers were not very happy about the lack of air conditioning on a 50 degree day!! The refund cheque was ready around 10am on the same day.

Yes you could live on it, but you would have to budget carefully. A 2br flat in West Bay or the Pearl will probably cost you around 13-14k. (generally speaking unfurnished are 1000/month cheaper). A Nissan Tiida or something similarly tiny will cost 1500/month to hire. The standards of driving are so shocking that I would only drive my children in large, safe cars, which would cost around 2-3500/month - and you'll probably need 2 cars. Nurseries within easy reach of West Bay cost between 1500-3000/month for 2 days a week - I believe you get what you pay for in Doha's nurseries.

Do you have a school place for the 3 year old lined up? There are schools reasonably close to West Bay and the Pearl but you don't want to be living there if the only place you can get him in is Parkhouse or DBS! As for shipping, if the company is paying, bring everything. If not and you end up with an unfurnished place, there is Ikea here now

Well leasing is a financial arrangement where you pay a deposit and a set amount per month, but own the car until you sell it back to them at a predetermined time. Renting ownership and servicing stays with the company. So renting better for short term.

The hardest part about moving anywhere is putting yourself "out there". What kind of activities do you do with your son (and on your own) in the UK? There are lots of things to do here, but sometimes you have to search a little bit for them. It's a really tough time and we've all been through it xx

Agree with whereintheworld and would also take several muslins, including a large one. I have seen people make a tent over the bassinet with a large muslin, you would need to take duct/gaffer tape too. Take more than one pacifier and also a pacifier clip as at 4 months the baby can throw it!! edited by tamieg1 on 28/04/2014

The houses are not equipped to deal with cold. Think our house got down to 9 degrees this winter - pretty chilly when there's no hearing!! Bring some winter gear for Christmas vacations to colder climates, and a pair of slippers and a few jumpers should suffice for the Doha winter.

Are you worried about your complexion from a sun exposure perspective or are you concerned about looking different? It is so hot 3-4 months of the year that you don't go outside except to run between the car and somewhere is air conditioned - and vitamin D deficiency is a real problem. The rest of the time just wear sunscreen and a hat and it's fine. For exercise there are gyms, parks, the Corniche, and mall-walking when it's too hot to go outside! Transport-wise if you don't drive you will need to rely on lifts with friends or a driver as there really is no alternative.

TDB I had a very similar experience but have stuck with the brunette now for 3 years and it is finally less maintenance!! I found putting a couple of highlights through the part helps to disguise the grey - and now the blonde has completely grown out I don't have to worry about covering the green tinge!!

How tight is tight? Most expats drive large 4WDs for added protection and extra visibility as the roads are so dangerous. Additionally I believe there is an insurance issue for cars over five years old - perhaps someone else can clarify? I will have a 2012 Kia Sorrento for sale soon :)

Does your insurance cover pregnancy? If so, there are many threads on here covering doctors at Al Ahli and Doha Clinic. Prof Badr and Dr Naseem at Feto Maternal Clinic are also good. For paediatricians I like Dr Ghada at Feto Maternal Clinic and Dr Renu (British) at Tadawi Clinic. Many people also like Future Medical near Villagio.
