In that case I would also bring things like glassware, plates, platters etc, and as many books as you can fit!

Do you know if you will be in furnished or unfurnished accommodation? And who is paying for shipping? I'm not from the US either, but I found it helpful to bring simple personal items like duvet covers, artwork/pictures, and tea towels to make it seem like home. I wouldn't bother bringing electrical appliances from the US as you will need a transformer to run them.

There is also the Sharq (lovely massages in the spa too, although planes are a bit noisy), the Marriott and the Hilton. I would recommend the Intercon though! Have a great birthday!

Your PRO is correct - however your ID card does not automatically have egate included, you need to follow the steps Northernstar gave below in order to use it.

I can't think of any regular posters that work for HMC - there may be some lurkers, and probably many people like yourself that posted prior to coming over... Also a lot of people will not want to advertise personal details such as employer on a public forum!

We stayed at Dewa in Phuket - under 2 hr flight from Singapore and 5 min transfer from airport (but no plane noise). Can get 2br apartments or villas with private plunge pools, and is across the road from the beach!

A jeweller back home told me to use one part washing up liquid, one part ammonia, and 3 parts water... But I usually just use a tiny bit of toothpaste!! Have you tried anywhere in the gold Souq?

I bought my stones and had the ring made in platinum at Marhaba in the gold Souq. Prices were comparable to Dubai and Bahrain. Just be aware that platinum scratches very easily and if I had my time again I would probably go for the white gold instead.

Have you also posted on When/Where/How Doha, Doha Where can I find?, and the BISISI pages? Always worth a try. Spinneys have notice boards as well. Maybe try yours or hubby's work colleagues too (assuming they know you're going!). Stating the obvious here but make sure the kitties look particularly attractive in any pics and being cuddled by a small child always helps too (if you know any!)

Congratulations on your pregnancy! The first thing to do is check where your insurance covers - a lot of insurance companies no longer cover Al Ahli. If Al Ahli is an option, I recommend Dr Asma or Dr Maha (both women and very nice) however be prepared for a lot of waiting - if you can actually get an appointment! It is easier to go in there to get an appointment than to try on the phone. The Feto Maternal Clinic near Landmark is also good, and I have friends that have used Hayat Medical Centre on Al Waab. There is a group called "Positive Birth Doha" or something like that on FB which you may be interested in joining. Finally, there is a Doha Mums New & Expectant Mums coffee morning every Thursday - the location alternates so check the Doha Mums website for details.

Yes unless you're in a new build apartment block where the neighbours run theirs constantly - I lived in one place in London where we didn't need to switch the heating on for 3 years!

I test drove both the BJCS and P&T Promenade over the summer. We've just ordered the BJCS from John Lewis and will pick it up back home next week. We decided to get the bassinette, despite rarely using it with my first, as it might be better for resale down the track and we would kick ourselves if we actually wanted to use it and couldn't get it here in Qatar. We've also ordered the 2nd seat as there will only be 18 months between them, so even once baby is 6 months old I foresee using both for quite a while...

They don't deliver here and it takes a bit longer than 3 days usually! You have to collect parcels from their office on Wholesale Market St - the location comes up in google maps. I hope it's still running as I have 2 packages there to be collected!

Deb that was before the rules changed to be fair! Whether the 6 month bank statement rule applies depends on your company/PRO. I know many people who have had to wait.

If your work is paying for it, ship everything! If not just bring the bare essentials and a few comforting "home" items. Most compounds are unfurnished but there are quite a lot (especially the big ones such as Al Asmakh properties) can be furnished if you prefer. There is not a huge amount of reasonably priced Western style home furnishing choice, although IKEA has changed Doha forever for the better! However it also depends on how long you think you will be here - compared to the cost of storing my 2 br London flat for 3 years, it would have been cheaper to ship everything! I would also advise you look at BEDH's reply to a post a few posts down regarding dogs in Doha to be absolutely sure you want to bring doggie too.

I was put off by the pricing at Frank Provst (although I do get my nails done there). I've been really happy with the colour at Dados - they have two South African hairdressers and I can always get an appointment (and they always answer the phone - unlike another salon...)

Fingers crossed though. There HAS to be a way to fix this situation, wonder why the government isn't doing anything about it? Possibly because the government are the ones digging up the roads?! I don't think the traffic situation will improve until the traffic & road rules apply equally to all road users....

Could you do it? Yes. Would I do it? No. Many people live on far less. If you're coming over here for a fantastic position and experience that you won't get anywhere else in the world, then it would be worth it. If you're coming here to save money and see some other parts of the world then it would not be nearly enough. One thing to keep in mind is it costs around QR7,000 to fly to the UK (return) on Qatar Airways (direct) so make sure you factor in any emergency trips/friends weddings etc where you might need to spend that sort of cash.

The Centre is the shopping centre Megamart is in... But there definitely used to be a Brands store in City centre. For tailors try Century Tailor on B ring near Jaidah Flyover. DH has been happy wih both shirts and suits made there. edited by tamieg1 on 17/09/2013

You are not a bad mum! You are a good mum who is trying so hard to do what's best for your child - and if that means a top up feed while you get breastfeeding sorted, then so be it. I gave up breastfeeding after a week and pumping after 3 weeks, and my DS is a happy healthy 1 year old - it certainly didn't affect our bond in any way and I think it actually strengthened the bond between him and DH, as DH was able to be more involved with feeding. Only you know what's best for your family - and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!!

They need to keep in mind that in order to get a vantage point anywhere near to the Bridge, they will need to be there at least 6 hours (preferably 12!) before the first fireworks at 9pm. I would recommend Kirribilli as it's close to Milson's Point train station, then they would just need to stay somewhere on the train line in order to get home.

Neamhai can you please share? My baby's vests have all gone grey :) I think it's also because the same questions get asked over and over - for example, how many theeads have we seen comparing Qatar and Dubai this year?!
