Just to add another spin to this thread, I lived there before coming here and there is no way I would go back there to live! I absolutely hated it and was so pleased to leave. It was my 3rd overseas posting so I was not new to living overseas and all previous postings had also been in Asia so that wasn't a problem. I found it unsafe, dirty, polluted, drab and I didn't think the people looked particularly happy (mostly nice though). I didn't have a good package and I think that would have made the world of difference. My housing was shocking with no running hot water and the electricity going off all the time but that was all I could afford on the allowance I was given. I didn't have a car/driver and had to rely on unreliable taxis, sometimes having to phone in to work to say I couldn't get in because I couldn't get a taxi! Sorry to be negative but it is the only place out of the 4 expat places I have lived that I didn't like. Dubai is so much easier to live in.

I use Bavaria Optics in Al Diyafah Street. German optometrist and very good. Not open all hours though - closed 1 - 5pm.

I've been to both - Koh Samui once and Hua Hin loads of times. I love Hua Hin - it is much quieter than other 'tourist' towns and it is easy to get to from BKK. Good markets too. I haven't stayed at 'Six Senses' though - it sounds lovely though. Last time I was there (in late August) I rented an apartment. There is a winery in Hua Hin now - I was intending to get to it on the last visit but ran out of time. You can tour the vineyard on an elephant too which is novel!

Sorry I took a while to get back to you emlsnre. The bowl is metal and has a deep inner part that touches the floor. The outside part is not touching the floor (it sits in mid-air) so that ants can't climb up the sides. It was only 55Dhs and I got it at the pet shop at Motor City. There is also a branch of the shop at the Green Community. It is still great - I see ants on the floor but none in the bowl. They are getting fewer each day as well. I had previously tried his bowl in another bowl of water but this one is less hassle. Just fill it up and put it down for puss to eat. :) He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw a new bowl but is fine with it now!

They told me that too. You can get ant powder but it is not safe for pets and children. The safe stuff is what you can't get. I wanted to get some cos the ants were eating my cat's biscuits and as they are expensive ones it is a nuisance to have to throw them away all the time. Yesterday I found an anti-ant bowl so am trying that. So far, so good!

Sorry for being thick but how do you download BBC iPlayer onto the iPad? I downloaded Vee Pee Nn Express onto iPad and still it won't let me get to the iPlayer1. Vee Pee Nn indicates that it is working and active.

When I looked online for that it said you can only get it in the UK. Is there a way of getting it here? I have an iPad 2!

I live in Layan and I love it. There are frustrations but I just love being able to look out onto green grass and trees and to hear the birds singing, after having had years of looking at sand. It is quiet and the villas are nicely appointed, in my opinion. The pool is big and it is clean, but not chilled. The illusive supermarket may open one day, but until DEWA connects the electricity we have to go to Motor City or Arabian Ranches for shop (5 minutes drive). The drive there is fine, but coming back is not direct so takes time. The entry and exits to the road are not finished, making for a bumpy ride. Taxis are now becoming familiar with Layan but I still have to direct them on the way home. Calling for one in advance is not much of a problem any more. It is 20 minutes drive to Mirdif City Centre as well (going up Emirates Road) so that is very close by. Sometimes I go there rather than the MOE as there are no traffic lights and round abouts to slow you down. I looked at Motor City and although the apartments were a lot bigger than what I ended up with at Layan (I have a 2 bedroom villa) the just didn't have that feel good feeling about them that I got when I saw the ones here. Good luck in making your decision.

Thanks so much ladies. Obviously it's not as hard to get as I thought. I wanted to save time searching in supermarkets for it so this is a great help. Thanks again! :)

Thanks Sabrina - I'll give it a go. He has expensive dental biscuits from the vet and I don't want to have to be throwing them out all the time!

I had visitors here last week and by chance we struck it lucky with our camel spotting. On the road heading toward Al Ain just passed the sevens venue there is a turn off to Al Lisali and then a turn to your left toward the camel pens - we must have seen over a hundred camels with their blankets on being led down the road by their trainers, who were only too happy to have their photos taken. I've never seen that many camels in my 6 years in Dubai.

Where are they located in Studio City? I looked last night and couldn't find them, unless they are in the building that says 'Subway'.

Just arrived home from tonight's show and it was brilliant. I have seen it in London and would go so far as to say that tonight's show was better! Just a small problem with the backing music being too loud for the singers but aside from that it was excellent.

Hi Sophia07 I travelled to the Baltics last summer and had a fantastic trip. I booked a tour through this website and they were very helpful. www.baltictravelcompany.com It is a very picturesque part of the world and not too touristy as yet. I flew to Helsinki, stayed a few days there and flew to Tallin (20 minute flight). I would highly recommend going.

The music shops around Fish roundabout will have exactly what you want and their prices won't be too bad.

I was getting back into my car at Mirdiff City Centre the other day and looked up into the car opposite me. There was a baby monkey jumping around the back seat and it was wearing nappies!

Thanks ladies. I am now thinking a combination of Venice and Zermatt, ending up with the Glacier train to St. Moritz. Everything looks beautiful on the websites! It makes it hard to decide.

AndreaA, I can't get the stuff back without implicating myself since she was part time - she knew that too! Hence the blatant stealing I think. Good luck in getting rid of yours- I'm pretty bitter about maids at present, in case you didn't notice!

My sympathies go out to you - I am in a similar position and because my maid was part time, I haven't a leg to stand on. She has stolen very valuable jewellery from me, after receiving only the best of treatment from me and being with me for 2 years. I am very sad and disappointed because I trusted and liked her. I haven't posted before because I know what EW will say as she was part time, so I am just commenting that I know how you feel - betrayed and very disappointed.:(
