What about meeting up tomorrow. I can actually get into the city. Let me know if you're interested :)
Hi. I've just this moment seen this. So sorry! Strangely I didn't get an email saying you had replied. Anyway, I am free some of next weekend if you would like to meet up before everyone leaves town. Send me an SMS on WhatsApp if you would like to.

Hey girls - just wondering if you did all meet up. I'm living out near Khalifa City A and it's been impossible for me to meet anyone as I only get Saturday and Sunday off. Is anyone interested in...
Hi CJQ. Any luck? I am the same age and a Kiwi (but I won't hold it against you being Aussie!! :-). Would love to meet some new people. Let me know if you are still interested. I live in the city but I drive so that isn't a problem.

Don't go here for a hair cut! I went earlier this week and they kept me waiting for over an hour and then just hacked at my hair! Very disappointed and won't go back!

Hi I'm moving back to the UAE and until I get my new work/residency visa I am told that I cannot ship anything over. Obviously times have changed as I certainly didn't have this problem last time I relocated to the UAE. I need to find a creative solution so that I can get my things over to the UAE when I move and not have to store them for months on end until I end up with a new visa! I tried asking if I can ship it under someone else's name (who has a residency visa already) but they don't seem keen. Anyone have any creative ideas? Thanks in advance.

I've tried that but it isn't negotiable. I don't want my cat to be in a cattery for a year but I am not going to abandon him, hence me trying to find different solutions to the problem.

Here are Riza's details VHappyfeet: Email address is [email protected]; phone 0503568814 I know she is extremely busy at the moment but give her a go. Another friend of mine is using her on my recommendation too. Good luck.

Totally agree. Get a pet and have them for life. My little boy is a rescue cat and has now lived in 3 different countries and about to move to his fourth. Even though a hardship for me, he WILL be going with me.

Sorry Singdub. I haven't been on here for a few days. How's it going with moving quotes? I've emailed 5 different companies and only one has got back to me, although not offered to come out and give me a quote. I thought they would all be jumping at the chance to get some business but I suppose this is their busiest time of the year.

I had to have major spinal surgery last year. Dr. Walter Bini performed the surgery and, although it was very scary for me, I couldn't have asked for a better surgeon. He was at City Hospital but is now Chief of Neurosurgery at Umm Al Quwain Sheikh Khalifa General Hospital. I couldn't recommend his work highly enough.

Dr Bini is now Head of Neurology at the new Khalifa hospital in Umm Al Quwain. He performed surgery on me earlier this year and is an amazing surgeon but not that great with people - just so you know beforehand.

I haven't done this trip with kids but I have flown Dubai -Auckland many times and I invariably fly with Thai Airways. There is a 12 - 13 hr layover in Bangkok but I always go over to the Novotel Hotel from the airport and have a sleep, a swim and some food. It breaks the very long journey very well.

I know what you mean. It has opened up a whole world for her. Both my brother and I live overseas so she can keep in contact with us for free via Skype and emails us from her arm chair, and as she lives alone, the games keep her entertained and not bored. I try to solve problems remotely but if I can't the people at the Apple Shop help her out.

My Mum is 84. I gave her an iPad mini for Christmas a year and a half ago and it is the best present in terms of use that I have given her in many years! I don't know how she'd get on without it now! edited by Thaiger on 25/08/2014 edited by Thaiger on 25/08/2014

Best wishes for Saturday. You'll be fine. I'm so pleased you saw Dr. Nojoomi as he is so nice. My surgery went very well, as I mentioned below and he was very caring. He even gave me a nerve block so the pain wouldn't be as bad, and it was administered once I was under so I didn't feel it. I was in hospital overnight following the op then off work (with no driving) for 3 weeks. Just be careful when going out and wear your sling thingie so people know you have an injury. I'll be thinking of you - but know you are in safe hands.

Yes! It's weird. I went for a walk earlier. After I had returned and showered I looked out the window and couldn't see anything! It wasn't like that when I was walking! It's horrible.

Hi GE I had this exact same shoulder surgery with Dr. Njoomi about two and a half years ago. He is lovely and I would highly recommend him. I've been back to Arabian Ranches Clinic, where I first saw him, a few times since to see other Drs and he has always stopped to ask me how I am and called me by name. I really like and trust him. You will be fairly incapacitated for a while. I was off work for 3 weeks and lots of physio for about 6 months. I feel your pain. Having been there! edited by Thaiger on 01/07/2014

My Mum often sends things back to NZ from here when she visits. Often it is up to 30kg. She sends it at the Post Office and it is usually around 600-800Dhs. It arrives in about 3 weeks. The PO have their own very sturdy boxes of different sizes. If you do go down this route ask them to assemble the box when you purchase it as it isn't the easiest to put together! Took 3 men a few goes!

Try the Scarsdale diet. It always works for me and I never feel hungry on this one. It' a medical diet. You do 2 weeks on it then you do a Keep Trim programme for 2 weeks and keep alternating. http://www.momswhothink.com/lose-weight-fast/scarsdale-diet.html

Such a difficult time for you madaboutpink. You will be agonising about your children on top of your own dilemmas. Like others, I don't have any experience with this but I have just had surgery with a neurosurgeon here in Dubai and although he is not renowned for his people skills he is an excellent surgeon. If you can put that aside and want to talk to him, give Dr. Walter Bini at City Hospital a call. The nurses in the ward said that they would choose him as their surgeon of preference for neurosurgery. Best wishes in the months ahead. xx

It would be much cheaper and a wider selection in Bangkok. Shop then go to Phuket or Khao Lak for a holiday afterwards!

Yes, it is in the family book. I haven't travelled to Abu Dhabi with Careem but I would imagine it would be around 400Dhs. Just guessing but if you download the app it will give you an approximate cost.

Just a heads up - If you intend to teach here you will need all your qualifications, family documents etc attested before you get here. Without this you won't be able to teach. Many schools are recruiting now so you haven't missed the boat yet! Good luck.

I returned home from spinal surgery at City Hospital 3 days ago, performed by Dr. Walter Bini, a neuro surgeon. He is fantastic at his job although quite blunt and to the point. I knew this before I met him but decided that his medical skills were more important to me than his interpersonal skills and I definitely made the right decision.

I took my Mum to the Fayrooz lounge at Al Qsar last week ( using an Entertainer voucher). It was lovely and there are views of the sea and the Burj Al Arab. There are 3 types of afternoon tea available too. The service was excellent as was the food.

Hi there and welcome to Dubai. I may be wrong but I think there are still places at GEMS Wellington Academy Al Khail. It is a new school which started last September. The number is 043396233. Good luck in your search and in settling into Dubai.

Wow! Thanks for all the information. They certainly sound dodgy! Unfortunately my company has signed it's employees with them so I don't have an option. Flowerhead -thank you for that tip. I will investigate. You were lucky to get it sorted. MissS2510 - what a nightmare. The last thing you want is to have people messing you around prior to surgery. I genuinely feel for you. I hope you are on the road to recovery now. Thanks to you both for your comments and best wishes. I am beginning to think I may be lucky to have my insurance approved. Fingers crossed.

Thanks flowerhead - it sounds like your dealings with them have been more favourable than mine, fortunately. I am awaiting surgery approval and it is dragging on and on with the date having to be reset all the time. Very unsettling. Every time I call I get a different answer - very 'Dubai'.

I'm in Sports City and I really like it there. I have lived in various places in Dubai and find this very quiet and peaceful. You do need a car though as there is no public transport and taxi drivers, although it is getting more well known, find it difficult to locate you. I overlook the Victory Heights golf course so it is a pleasant view too. The entry and exits are all easy unless there are cricket matches on at the cricket stadium, but that only happens a few times a year. The studios in my building are quite big too from memory. The biggest downside is that there are no shops nearby to pop out to if you forget to get something. However, Motor City is just up the road and some places will deliver. It is about 20 - 25 minutes to MOE, the same to Dubai Mall and also MCC so well located.

Don't take it all on board yourself. Get a little committee together to share the load. International Day is celebrated at different times of the year by different schools so you wont't find specifically 'International Day' things in the shops. You might find some different country resources at somewhere like 'Creative Minds' on Umm Suquiem Rd however.

Survey other parents and get little groups together from a range of countries or geographical areas (eg. The Americas, Oceania, Middle East etc). Get them to come up with a few traditional food tasters and a couple of games from their country/region. Get the kids to make a passport and 'travel' to each country/region. They could have their passport stamped at each place.

Yippee. I'll have to take a trip down there. Peanut slabs are my all time favourite, closely followed by pineapple lumps. Shame they aren't here too -or maybe it's just as well!
