I saw Dr Senthil Nathan this afternoon. He was recommended to me by an orthopedic surgeon I trust. He seemed very nice and not at all pushy. His words were that he treats the patient, not the test results. I liked that.

I haven't seen Butterball turkeys lately but I bought an American turkey at Lulu in Barsha on Saturday. They were just putting them out. The brand was Midamar.

Sleeplessindubai, I know exactly how you feel as I am going through the exact same thing myself. I spent all of yesterday running around between my current employer, the banks and my new employer trying to ensure I have some money to live on. What the bank will do is to immediately freeze your account/cards until you can produce a new visa page and salary letter from your new employer. They will take the relevant payments out of the frozen amount (loan, credit card) until it is unfrozen. They have told me they will take the amount due, not the entire amount. I have taken all my money out so it won't be frozen as well. I am trying to do a deal with them as I have 3 months salary plus my gratuity and flight money being paid in, so will have no money coming in until the end of September. What I am trying to get them to do is to freeze the gratuity and airfare and release the salary so I can live! I won't know until the payment goes into my account if I have been successful or not. It's a wait and see game - one I don't like being a player in! Good luck and I hope you get things sorted out.

I have the same size. Sometimes you can get shoes at M &S or any UK shops (size 8) but the selection is very small. I usually stock up at when I'm at home. I will check out those two places in Ibn Battuta. There are some lovely shoes here and for a shoe lover it's not fair that I can't buy any!

Yes they have them. In fact every mall I have been to here has them. I usually borrow one when my Mum is staying. You just have to leave you ID with them. Sometimes they run out but they will call you when one becomes free. It enables those who can't walk the huge distances in Dubai malls to see a whole lot more than they normally would, so it offers a great service.

You can exchange AED at some banks in Thailand. I know that the Siam Commercial Bank changes Dirhams, cutting out having to change it twice. You can use your ATM card at any of the banks but let your bank know that you will be in Thailand so they don't block it. They do charge a fee for this. I do both when I travel there.

You can buy plug in electric ones in DragonMart that you heat up for about 5 minutes and they stay warm for ages. They come with an adjustable strap to strap it to your body if you need warmth for pain or, like me, you could just cut them off!

Hi Fullymine If you have the choice I would go for IB. It is more like the NZ curriculum (I am from NZ) as it is inquiry based and lets children investigate things they are interested in as well as relating their learning to real life experiences. IB stands for International Baccalaureate. Have a look at their website: http://www.ibo.org/

Yes, yes, yes! I'm glad I'm not the only one having trouble with people receiving texts to NZ. It started about 3 weeks ago. I have complained to Etisalat and they say it's not their problem. I emailed Vodafone and didn't get any help what so ever, so I am now in NZ (Merry Christmas - it is now officially Christmas Day here) and I went in to Vodafone. They said they had never heard of this problem before and it must be Etisalat. I told them Etisalat had already told me it wasn't their problem and Vodafone are saying it's not there problem, so who's problem is it??? They couldn't answer but said they couldn't do anything about it. Maybe we should all bombard them with emails until they sort it out! By the way, my phone works fine here!

Santa Fe do a Smaller shipment where they pack your things in a specially made crate and it then goes into a container that is going to your destination. I can't remember the name of it - it's something like a LCB. A friend of mine moved their stuff to Brisbane from here a few months ago like this. It is a more expensive way of doing it than a whole container (I don't mean more than a container load but proportionally it's more expensive) but if you don't have a whole container it is a better way to go. I don't know the exact costs though.

No shops at all in Sports City! You would be better with Motor City as you would have easy access to amenities. I think there is also quite an active community group too so you would be able to meet up with other Mums and not be isolated. There is no public transport out this way though and you would have to catch a taxi if you wanted to venture further afield than Motor City.

Hi LeicsExpat. I know exactly how your husband feels. I spent a month looking at everything available within a tight budget and it is so frustrating. I looked at Themaar. It was ideal for what I was looking for and I thought it was very nice. However, upon leaving there I had such a huge wait just to get out of the Green Community with dreadful traffic congestion that I decided it wasn't worth living there. That sounds like a trivial reason but once you come to know Dubai, it plays a big part in getting anywhere. In my opinion, it would be too far to walk to the shops, especially with a baby and the heat. The roads here are not really built for pedestrians and cars travel very fast, so I wouldn't want to be walking along the roads to get anywhere. I eventually found a nice place in Sports City well within budget. Please don't let me put you off - just sharing my thoughts having considered living there too. I do agree that is a very nice building and the apartments are big. Good luck in your decision making.

I often use Thai Airways to fly to NZ as I find it much cheaper than Emirates. There is a longish layover in BKK but you can get a day pass for a hotel and it breaks the looooong journey.

I lived in Bangkok from 2002 – 2004 but return regularly to visit friends and for holidays. I was living in China at the time and had visited Bangkok prior to living there. I was a bit unsure if I would like living there and was still not certain when I arrived there to work. However, given the chance I would go back in a flash! I absolutely loved it there and found the people to be very friendly and happy with their lot. It is a cheap place to live (unless you eat and live 100% on Western food/shopping etc). From memory we paid around 11% tax on our salaries. Housing is quite expensive there so watch out for that - but there are some lovely places to live. Going from Dubai you would find Singapore an easier place to live as it is orderly and has systems in place. Bangkok is not quite the same and is still very much a developing city. Yes, it’s dirty in places and minor parts of it are seedy but in actual fact Thai people are very modest and shy and the ‘seediness’ is really only where the tourists go and not part of everyday life. It’s busy and bustling and has a great atmosphere. It can be frustrating at times (much more than here) but that is part of the fun of living somewhere different. It is fairly slow to get around anywhere (traffic congestion) but taxis are cheap and there is the sky train which is fast and frequent (and nice and cold for a break from the hot weather). I wouldn’t advise to drive there as you will end up paying many fines whether you have done something wrong or not. If you have white skin (no offense meant) it means you have money – even if you don’t – and you are the target of many a policeman stopping the car and fabricating a traffic offense, just for him to pocket the money himself. I can’t comment on what there is for kids as I don’t have any, but I do know that there is plenty to do. There are lots of parks, pools, and amusement type things to do. Thai people LOVE children and you would find your kids being smothered in attention everywhere they went (much more than you!). Keep us updated as to your choice of places to live.

From memory there is a music shop in the Al Waha Centre (on SZ Rd not far from Mayaza centre) and they used to rent pianos. He is a Chinese guy by the name of Shan Li (I think). No idea of prices though. It may be cheaper to buy an electric piano instead and sell it on when you leave. You can get not bad Cassio ones in Sharaf DG for between 2 & 3 thousand Dhs but you have to put it together. Otherwise a Kawai is around 5000 I think, available from The Music Room in the Beach Centre in Jumeriah Beach Road. You could also try Dubizzle.

I had my bedroom blackout curtains cleaned by Churchill in June. I wasn't aware they were difficult to clean so never mentioned it and they never said anything! I've used them on a couple of occasions to do curtains, dry clean mattresses and clean rugs. I find them very good and their price is comparable to dry cleaning companies.

You were nearly there. Turn the corner to your right after Ted Morgan and it is on the first corner you come to after that. Parking is around that corner in the building next door, through the barriers. They are fantastic - so much so that I haven't been anywhere else in the past year since they opened. Hope you find it - it will be worth your while!

Hi wJ731 I was interested to read your post as I was looking yesterday for something along then same lines. Unfortunately I didn't find anything. I have just had surgery and can't push my visiting Mum around in a wheelchair for sometime yet, basically making us house bound, as she can't walk very far. If you find any such agency I would be most grateful if could you post it on here. Thanks.

Fantastic - thank you ladies. I will take care of the 'individualistic driving' (I know exactly what you mean)! Belinda - the turtles sound great - hope they are there when we go. Can we do a border crossing at Kalba instead of Hatta? I've only ever driven to Hatta for visa runs so haven't ventured anywhere else!

You could try Emirates Post. Depending on the weight you can send boxes (purchased from the post office for about 15Dhs each) of up to 30kg. It used to be around 27Dhs/kg for the slowest way to NZ. My Mum always used to send stuff home after a visit here if she had excess luggage. It's delivered to your door in NZ too.

I go to Thailand quite often and usually take USD to exchange there. You get around 7000BHT for 100USD. It is not as good a rate as you see on xe.com. I also withdraw money from the ATM but make sure you let your bank know first or they may block your card and not let you withdraw money. You have to pay a fee for each withdrawal so make them for large denominations so you don't get caught out paying many times. There are some places that exchange AED but you may find it hard to find a bank that will change this for you. I know the Siam Commercial Bank (purple and orange logo) usually do. Have a great time - I LOVE Thailand!
