Hi, Malaysian stop flying to Dubai as of this weekend, so that won't be an option. You could use Emirates to Kuala Lumpur then Air Asia, who have really cheap fares KUL/Hanoi and then out of Saigon/KUL. Emirates sale fares are on unitl Monday. Otherwise Qatar airways.

Hi, for anyone that is interested they have lunch boxes for 25-40dhs, backpacks 40dhs down from 190dhs. Also christmas stockings, mainly girls ones for 20dhs. Lots of other stuff too. This was at the Mirdiff store today, not sure what Dubai Mall has, but stuff was going pretty fast.

Fida in Satwa have a good selection but the best shop is in Deira near the gold souk. You can easily get the metro to the gold souk stop and walk. http://www.mab1925.com/HomePage.Html They supply stores in Satwa. Tons of ribbons in one shop and then you ask them for directions and literally behind this store is their other one. Beads, glitter, haberdashery galore. Also sell sealable plastic bags, I bought some to put christmas cookies in, 200 bags for 30dhs. Great for school baking sales etc. <em>edited by TimTam on 13/12/2011</em>

Michelle-Dubai Podiatry, she is excellent. If you do a search with the correct spelling of Podiatrist you'll see her come up nearly everytime. There is another good one, yet not sure of their name. http://www.dubaipodiatry.com/ <em>edited by TimTam on 07/12/2011</em>

Spongemonkey they deliver, but I suppose you would still need to go and pick them. The garden shop near spinneys is down the road at the side of spinneys, you follow it around the bend and the plant place is near the corner.

At the plant souk out past Dragon mart. I think that is where the municipality moved to. There are quite a few places that sell them out there. Do a search on here for directions. From memory you go past dragon mart on the al Khail Rd (44), turn right at the round about, then left at the next round about on that road. You can see all the plant places off to the left.

My boys made vouchers for their grandparents, like "free hugs, wash the dishes, make a cuppa tea" Stocking stuffers- magazines, food items. This is very checky but you can go to Sephora and they will give you sample perfumes for free, you can pop these in. Favourite ground coffee, nuts or tea.

I have a friend that moved there in Jan from Dubai and another friend has just arrived in Dubai 2 months ago from Beijing (our husbands all work for the same company). Her children are at the IB school, can't remember the name but I can ask if you like. She is really happy with it. Her children are in Year 1 and 4. She said it is very expensive and imported brands of clothing like Massimo Dutti/espirit are heavily taxed with what they call luxury tax. I think most things are taxed at 30% luxury tax. She was looking for self raising flour the other day and ended up paying 14usd for a bag. She said if you buy local chinese it's cheap. Even though everything is made in China it's not necessarily sold there for expats to buy. There are factory outlets in other cities that she heard are really cheap. Bikes are cheap, she bought a Giant bike for a great price. She bought lots of clothes here in the sales before she moved. People are rude and language barriers are difficult. They love travelling though and had some amazing experiences.

we have bought 2 second hand guitars here, one from dubizzle and one from turning pointe. My husband just looked so see if it had been dropped, or any cracks in the casing. Stick to a known brand like Yamaha and you can't go too wrong. Here is turning pointe's website http://shop.turningpointeuae.com/index.php?page=shop.browse&category_id=82&vmcchk=1&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=80

I bought my son a winter like ski jacket, polar fleeces, thermo gloves, socks, water proof pants for when we went home in winter and they run about in the mud. All has been great. It all comes form Germany and a German friend says it's great value for money. As homeward bound said, you can't go wrong!

I'm sure others will have some thoughts too. Personally I think 6 nights Disney is long unless you plan on doing Universal and San Diego from there, they do have day trips by bus. We did 2 full days at Disney but with little ones you will move slower, so you may want 3 full days. We don't mind moving hotels, but others like to stay in 1 spot and do day trips from there. We did 2 nights Hollywood you may prefer Beverly Hills, there is the Beverly Centre for shopping http://www.beverlycenter.com/ and in Hollywood above Mann's chinese theatre there is a mall http://www.hollywoodandhighland.com/ We didn't find many great toy stores in this area though. The best place for kids things was target. San Diego we went to Fashion Valley http://www.simon.com/mall/?id=765 we had 4 nights, but it was then end of our trip and we were happy to do seaworld, zoo and then chill. Here is the link for the outlet malls http://www.premiumoutlets.com/ If you can't already tell, I'm a die hard shopper!

We bought a device that you run the slides through and it saves them as JPG, either straight to your computer or to a memory card. It was brilliant, but it does take a bit of time. Ours did negatives and slides. last summer when I was at home I put over 500 pf my parents slides onto their computer then we watched the slide show on the TV it was lots of fun. I have lent it to my father in law so not sure what the brand was. I bought it in Australia but I think it was around 350dhs-400dhs. Well worth it if you have then time to plough through them all. Found it http://www.kaiserbaas.com/kaiser-baas-product-page/converters/photomaker-pro there are many different ones. <em>edited by TimTam on 27/11/2011</em>

Hi SuzyDuzy, we went to California with our children over the summer, but they were 10 and 13. Keep in mind if you are staying at the Disneyland hotel this is in Anaheim. To get to Universal Studios/Hollywood this is about 1 hr away from Anaheim, can take longer depending on traffic. San Diego Zoo, Seaworld and Legoland are in San diego area. Legoland is about 20mins out of San Diego. It will take you about 1 1/2 - 2hrs again depending on traffic to get from Anaheim/Disneyland area to San Diego. If you want to do more than 1 thing in the San Diego area I would stay down there. We had 3 nights and loved it there. Also a great outlet mall on the way down. Sandiego has some great shopping and beaches, but you would need a car. Hope this helps a bit.

Hi Trigg, we went over the summer (Australian passports) and did the etsa online, which is the visa waiver, very easy and you get confirmation straight away otherwise you go back online and check a few hours latter and it should be confirmed. You must do this before you travel. I think it was $10usd each. You also need to have the biometric? passports, the ones with the chips in them. <em>edited by TimTam on 25/11/2011</em>

It isn't compulsary for school, both my children have been in school here for 6 years and haven't had the vaccine. I asked several doctors here and overseas and have been advised that the vaccine won't cover all strains of TB and it is unlikely the the vaccine will protect you against current strains. It's not a nice vaccine and your arm comes up in like a boil and I really didn' want to put my children through that unnecessarily. I know many will shoot me down and say that getting TB is worse but that's the choice I made based on discussions with several doctors.
