Dear Moderator, I made a post on Aug 16th regarding discovering we had an expired British passport for my Son the day before we were about to travel as a family. Since returning to DXB, I have tried on several occasions to find my thread so I could update it with information on what we did and to give advice that would help other forum members should they find themselves in the same situation. I think the thread has been deleted??

Dr Houriya Kazim is excellent, she comes with experience of working with the highest rated specialists and surgeons from UK. I was a patient of hers for many years (though I haven't been for a while, which I must do :-0) she is excellent, very thorough but realistic too. I have undergone surgery twice and biopsies twice too. You are in safe hands with her.

elk1973 - thanks for the tip on the homemade veg wash - so does this remove any chemicals on the fruit/veg? We live in a compound & Llord had pest control come to spray the comon areas of the compound and the guy happily sprayed my garden and all of my home grown veggies, herbs etc which I have been nurturing for months to be able to use fresh 'organic' produce for my kids!! Ha ha after this that is funny hey! So yes, like you can't afford the prices of organic stuff in the shops so just growing our own stuff on a small scale and hoping that it is now not wasted effort :-o

I'm sorry to read your post & I do sympathise with you. I had a similar thing a few months ago, lady was pleasant, great at cleaning but kids just couldn't warm to her. She was with me for nearly a month & during that time, my DS then 2.5yrs would not let her change his nappy at all (we tried & tired but he screamed the house down), my elder son then 3 .5yrs would not let me even leave the house to walk the dog & leave them with her. I let her go and got a new lady - the 2nd day she was with us both boys were fine with her, on 2nd day I walked the dog - I asked them if I could go, they uttered yes no problem, I walked the dog, came back & they didn't even notice I'd gone-far too busy playing! Needless to say this lady is still with us and now on our sponsorship etc. :-) She's great with the kids but not so great on cleaning (that can in part be trained).....but you can't have everything and we are happy with her - inshalla. My advice would be, if you do need her to be involved with your kids, change the maid - kids are very perceptive & sometimes you just can't push it, they either take to someone or not! Trust their instincts. If you got her from an agency, and they lied on the info they provided to you, then you are entitled to change her with no cost to you. Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Wow! my DEWA bill for 1 bedroom is around 300aed/months, it is as high as a 3 bedroom??!!! we only have the A/C on when at home. Pleeeease don't tell me you are 'complaining' about an entire bill of AED 300/month!!!! We are in a 3 bed villa, switch off the A/C upstairs when we come down in the morning, switch off lights etc and we pay 2500-3000 per month and YES we pay municipality tax and have for the last 6 years, no matter where we move to they find us! we have neighbours in our compound who still don't pay tax & we pay AED 625 month tax alone. So please don't complain about AED 300 for entire bill!

Update as promised: As mentioned below, once the AED 2,000 deposit was paid & employment visa (pink) in hand we had 60 days to medical & then stamp in p'port and if we went over the 60 days the fine was AED 15 per day, that's it. So don't worry, I guess what Scaralex was talking about must be for AUH. I can confirm that here in Dubai you're fine, nothing has changed. Phew!

It really p's me off that as sponsors we can be expected to fork out all the money & the maids can then basically do what they want. It is all well & good saying you'll loose all the money you've spent as a years investment in a short 4 months.....maybe for some that money is harder to come by than others, or for sure not maybe. Personally, I think it's shocking and about time the Government introduce new laws to protect sponsors as well as maids!!

Hi Gweny, I can relate to your problem, a few years back I decided to have a break from always exercising and watching my weight. I put on 16kgs in four months. Gluttony and sloth was my problem, not my thyroid. It took a LOT longer than four months to get the weight off but I did in the end. I know you say you have no time to prepare proper food but you need to make the time. I make a big salad in the evening and that does for lunch the next day too. Lots of chopped fresh vegetables and some sort of protein (which I cook a big batch of every few days). Don't cover it in creamy dressing, it sounds weird but soya sauce and a splash of chilli oil is one of my favourite dressings. Breakfast is raw oats soaked in milk with flaxseeds, dried fruit, chopped nuts and few grapes. I know it probably sounds boring eating salad all the time but it makes me feel great. On the odd occasion I do eat some bread or something I feel quite sluggish. Great that you are exercising, keep it up! It's not easy but you can do this. I know I'm not meant to say this (and I would never say it to a teenager or publicly a la Kate Moss) but yep, nothing tastes as good as skinny feels. Good luck! Excellent post Daza and some good advice too! to the OP, basically (health issues aside) getting fat is because of eating too many calories and not burning those calories via exercise. So as has been advised eat healthy foods, do not indulge in the 'bad' stuff once in a while as a treat is ok but not regularly, reduce portions & move, move, move! Good luck!

Scaralex - That is the first I have heard of that too! I was not told that by Immigration, I was clearly told we had 60 days to do it and if we went over the 60 days the fine was AED 15 per day, that's it, nothjng at all said about medical insurance. How on earth could they offer this chance to give a 2 month legal trial with paying the refundable deposit then go ahead & fine you for not getting (presumably an annual) medical insurance - now that would be bizzare....mind you funnier things have happened in Dubai!! I will let you know if we get a nasty surprise.

Hello lovely lady! So you've finally decided to go the maid route too hey. I just drew up an 'agreement' between us & our new maid (just so everything was clear from the start) I will send it to you now. It is not a contract but an agreement, it may help. I also drew up a household guidelines document too. Tying to make it more formalised & clear in writing from the start. I have also bought a duplicate receipt book for salary payments. Mind you, I didn't cover 'not wearing Madam's underwear or running shorts', 'not stealing Madam's rings' or even 'no selling your body on your days off for that matter'!!!! You have to laugh hey!

Yes, you need to pay the AED 2,000 refundable deposit, that makes her & you legal as she is registered as sponsored by you, if you decide during that time that she won't work out, you can go & get your money back. You need to go to DNRD with all your papers & maids pport, 1 photo, as though you were doing the sponsorship, pay the AED 2,000 refundable deposit and you get her 'employment visa' on the pinkish paper, then you have 60 days before you need to finalise everything - meaning 60 days to do the medical & then pay the balance amount AED 5,800 or whatever, to get the final stamp in her passport. The visa is then valid for 1yr from that date (meaning you get 14 months out of a 12 month visa). hth

Do you have the pool (is it heated in Wninter, cooled in summer?) playground open yet? AdviceSeeker it has to be Antiques Museum in Al quorz - its an absolute gem of a place which I discovered back in 2004/5. It is by no means glitzy (unlike Madinat!) as it is a group of warehouses & a maze or rooms after rooms.......after all these years I still probably haven't seen all of it. Anyway they have everything & I mean everything-you name it, they've got it, just tell them what you want & tehy will find it. I've always dealt with a guy called Bob-he's a short Indian guy (probably not really called Bob) & extreemly friendly, he was always 'top dog' as far as giving the ok to the other staff for givning extra discounts. So ask for Bob or if not at least Bob's price! You can bargain & their prices are amazing. Its always a def trip out when I have visitors but be prepared to 'loose' yourself in there & half a day with it! but you'll come home with some gems.

I was going to suggest beach too, or if you prefer a pool not far away Wafi has a lazy river & 3 nice little water slides that they'll love & will be knackered too, or a park with lots of high slides (lots of climbing) is also always a good option!! I have 2 boys (2 1/2 & 3 1/2yrs) so I am an expert in the 'knackering them out' game! :-) Good luck! P.S. Also give them a lighter lunch & a heavy dinner helps with giving them & you a good nights sleep.

Hi all, Yes, like many of you I am also looking around to move. We have been living in Mirdif 4yrs & I must say we love it esp with MCC & other new developments which have come up while we were here. We are currently in a 3bed + maids villa on a compound with a pool. We do love where we are staying but the AUH based real estate company ‘handling’ this compound for the LL are terrible & every year at contract renewal, I have had months (yes months not weeks!) of sleepless nights & a feeling of insecurity & stress. This year they are not budging on the rent from last year or prepared to increase the number of cheques & I this last year has been one stress after another so I really can't face once again months of battling with them and sleepless nights worrying, so I am now looking around. Yesterday I went to see a 3 bed townhouse villa in Jumeriah Village South Mirabella (Brand new 85k 4 ch, there was also one same 70k 4 ch) but it was far too small for all our furniture etc (been living here since ’97 & our life is here-including big furniture!). A friend who lives in AR suggested Al Waha/Layan. I have read through various threads here on EW and there is some interesting feedback & have gone on DP website to get info but want to know: • What is the current rent on Villas 3 bed + maids & 4 bed + maids? How many cheques? • Are there different types of villas I need to know about like different categories like in AR for example or like the 3m, 3e springs etc & is there an ‘end’ of either complex that should be avoided? • Any update on pool/facilities? Any updates or help will be much appreciated! TIA

Well done! 20 yrs! You should be proud in this day & age. I would go for Pierchic, not that I've been but my Husband does lots of groups with them & I've only heard good things (bit pricey though but worth it), I have done Pai Thai last Summer with Hubby & it was very nice but I think the over the water setting of Pierchic would be so romantic. Hubby took me out for our anniversary in Feb to a lovely Thai rest in the Palace hotel down town, (can't remember the name of it but there's only one-can check if you want?) good food & service & the outdoor seating on the balcony has a spectacular view over the waters edge overlooking Burj Khalifa & the fountains show...that was nice. We had a drink in the fab bar in the address hotel first (on the really high floor-can't remember that also!) which also over looks the fountains....just a thought. Okay checked with Hubby - Neos is the bar in Address downtown & Tiptara (or Thiptara) is the Thai restaurant in The Palace hotel downtown on the waters edge overlooking Burj Khalifa & the fountains show

Thanks TanyaR for the good advice. No I couldn't see the stinger but I thought wasps were very tiny little sharp sticks like a splinter (I know bees are triangular with barbs). Anyway from what you've said when it happened yesterday I wiped it & applied TCP ointment so if it was there, it would have been wiped off. I was actually more concerned with it maybe still being inside & causing an infection, so if it would have wiped off so easily then that wouldn't be the case. In the end, I didn't fiddle with it for fear of agravating it further, I put tea tree oil on cotton wool & taped it to his finger this morning but once he removed it (said it was hurting too much) he seemed to complain less. by this evening the white/yellow dot had become balck so it looks like his body is fighting it. Poor little boy, considering it was a wasp sting, he was a very brave little chap! Thanks again.

Bianca72, Daisy16 thanks for your advice, sorry I did not send this earlier I haven't ben online since sending this thread. Bianca72 - I took your advice and did the 'in-country visa', it cost dhs 600 more but made it more simpler. She is new to DXB so we didn't want to send her to Kish without knowing which flight to bring her back on & was affraid if we didn't send her with the employment visa in hand, she might get stuck, she was affraid of that prospect. Interestingly immigration advised us not to waste the Dhs 600 but we thought it was more straight forward, so we booked her on a fly Dubai flight to MCT & in the afternoon & back the same evening. No problems. Flower_girl - Thanks! took long enough to find one. I guess I got really spooked with my last experience....more than I even realised at the time. Anyway, 6 months later and yes, I hope this one works out well. fingers crossed. I now need to get back into trying to find myself a job! Hope you & your gorgoeus babe are well? x

Hi has anyone else recently sent a miad to do the turnaround Kish Island visa run? We have finally found a maid who came in on a TOURIST Visa not a VISIT visa so immigration informed me she has to exit the country before we can change over her visa status to residence/sopnsorship, if she was on a visit visa then we would just change it while she was in the counrty. I have heard all about these visa runs but never done it so any advice will help. TIA

I stopped smoking using accupuncture, that was in 1998! So yes, I can say along with a bit of willpower (well a lot actually), and lots of munching on raw celery & carrot sticks (to satisfy ciggie in finger habbit) it worked! I went to Dubai Physio clinic on Al Wasl RD, the lady who 'did' me was from NZ & called Bronwyn - don't know if she's still there but if she is she was fab!!

I'm affraid me telling him what I want to pay & how many cheques won't work as I tried that the last 2 yrs (I even provided evidence of RE ads in Mirdif) & it just dragged on & on with me sending emails, faxes, making calls and no response at all for 2-3 months. Then they got really shirty & we have a couple of days to accept their offer or walk! However saying that I don't just want to cave in & accept. So yes, in a way I will tell him what I want - They have sent us an offer same as last year - 100K 4 Cheques so I want to know what other existing tennants are getting. I know new empty villas are going cheaper but what about existing tennants....I thought prices had gone down again since last year but our LL wants the same & the same # cheques?
