Thanks Asti. I have never been there but I was under the impression that it was more of a baby/toddler class. Is that right? I was after something a little more"authentic".

Hi Ladies, We are currently living in Dubai but have just found out that DH's workplace is closing down at the end of the year :( Just wondering if anyone knows of any good recruitment agencies or specialists? DH works in Marinas and shipyards. Thanks in advance!

We are Australian. How much does it cost to do a visa run? Would we have to do it every 30 days? We are a family of 6 so thinking it may get quite expensive. Will also look into your suggestion ecochic. Thanks

Sometimes you just cant help a child having an accident at the park, and it may just be that she couldnt have done anything to stop the accident and her ' what do you want me to do, jump under the swing' was just her way of expressing she just couldnt have avoided the accident. People get into such pickles with maids and I'm sorry but from reading your posts - no wonder. But that said I'm feeling kind of sorry for your maid and I have a feeling it wont be long before you're looking for maid number 3. I wouldnt be able to cope being on the receiving end of how your posts come across. I think I would have replied to you the way the maid did - at least. You sound like hard work :) edited by DesertRose1958 on 31/10/2012 My thoughts as well.

I recently saw Dr Nadim Habash in American Hospital. I had initially planned to go to Moorfields but got put off both by the long wait and by some horror stories I heard of folks being given wrong prescriptions due to drs being in a hurry (something I've encountered b4 and has put me off too-busy eye drs). Dr Habash was excellent - very thorough and checked everything. What really won me over was he ended with "you don't need to see me annually, even if it becomes 15 months or so it's fine". I have quite bad myopia and I find it refreshing that a dr does not insist on an annual check up. I don't know if he does kids though. Dr Habash does see kids yes. I took my 3 year old son to him and a month later to Millicent Grim. They both had compltely different ideas on how to handle him (although both agreed that he was seriously far sighted). In the end DH and I were so confused that we took him to an Opthamolgist back in Australia. The Opthamologist gave us yet another prescription, however it was closer to Millicent Grim's prescription than Dr Habash's. (hmmmm, sorry if that didn't make sense!)

Yes I agree, it sounds like you need some alone time. My house gets really noisey but I only let the kids watch "calm" shows like playschool and sesame street and all noisey toys have been given away.;)

Thanks for the warning. Just checked out my FB page.... Oh dear oh dear! Thankfully all hidden from timeline now. Although looking back through them... How different life before marriage, kids and Dubai was!! Edited due to autocorrect :-/ edited by notheragain on 25/09/2012 I know! Plenty of messages about parties, yachts, tables at clubs, pre-drinks, brunches, now it's all about sewing club, book club, and antenatal classes! Oh my Dear Lord! I can't believe it. Thanks for the heads up DB.

We get complimentary access with our Emirates NBD credit cards. The Marharba lounge is okay (not as good as the Emirates Lounge) but certainly better than nothing. Not sure if it is worth the 140 dirhams for a full paying adult but yes, it has grape and hop juices. Food is pretty average and it can get very very busy. edited by Tru Blu on 25/09/2012

thanks for the replies Ladies. I am very close with my sister and this is hard for all of us. I know it is not a curse, but at the moment it just feels like the future is full of uncertainties. I always try to look at the good in everything, and I can't seem to find anything right now. I know in time that I will. Yes Amy, I am from Perth. Blondie, my sister is there. Interesting about the different types of milk. Interestingly my sister is a Dietician so maybe this diagnosis will take her off in a specialty field or something. I really hope that he is on the mild side, but either way, I will be supportive to her. Amy, I will take your approach and let her guide me as to how she needs me to be.

How can this be? Icecream Queen's husband must have told the police not to lock her up. This happened to us back in May. I discovered that our Agency maid was going into my handbag and taking money from my purse. DH took her to the police station and they asked my DH if he wanted her to go to jail. DH asked how long she would spend behind bars and the policeman said 1 or 2 years. We did not want that, so instead the policeman scared the living daylights out of her and told her never to return to the UAE or should would be put in jail (which is probably not true but she thinks it is) and she was immediately deported, with ban. I know a lot of people on this forum think that we should have had her locked away, but I just couldn't do it, neither could DH. End of story.

Does anyone go to Times Square Mall sometimes? Is it any good? Good to go with the family? I don't go to the big malls often coz of parking situation alone and find them quite overcrowded at times so planning to look for some other options. Any feedback? It's very quiet and low key. There are a few things you can do in there - playcentre, ice cafe and if your DH is adventurous you could to the Adventure Out challenge. There is no supermarket there which kind of bugs me though.

I think that it is outrageous, and a very poorly thought out plan. They are not breaking any laws, yet naming and shaming IS breaking the law. Whatever your opinion, we are talking about the law here, and the nursery will have broken it. I don't really agree with their approach either, although I guess that when it comes to the safety of children "tact" doesn't really matter, what matters is that they are not endangered. The Nursery is probably hoping and praying that it doesn't actually have to "name and shame" anyone and that the mere threat of it will be enough. Hahhahah, imagine they name and shames the wrong child/parent! Perhaps it would have been a better idea for them to announce that they were going to be at the forefront of lobbying the Government to get Laws changed.

I know this has been done before but my search did not bring up the specific thread that I wanted (Irooni posted it I think?). I am looking for the best sandwhich bread, I live close to a Choitrams and close to a Spinneys so recommendations from these stores would be preferable. TIA This thread could be the one? http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=181820 Thanks Di, yes, that's the thread. Thanks for all of the other suggestions too.

Hey Ladies, just wanted to update in case anyone cares! hahhaha I phoned Etisalat and eventually they told me that yes, it is now on the basic Arabic package, not the western. The Arabic package is probably better than the western package, so I switched. I still have all of the channels that I previously watched (English ones) plus more!!!! With the English channels do u mean Fox, MBC, Dubai One etc all the usual? Also the news channels like CNN?? Did u have to pay to change??? TIA No, you don't have to pay to change. Yes, I am referring to Fox, MBC, Dubai One, City 7. I am not sure about CNN. Just call them on 101, go through to elife and choose "upgrade/change subscritption". One of the easiest things I have done in Dubai. I don't speak any Arabic but the Arabic basic package is preferable (for me) over the Western.

thanks for the replies ladies. I have just called Etisalat and spoken with 2 different people who are telling me that I am not entitled to fatafeat on my basic western package. However I find this hard to believe as I had access to it 2 months ago (and also when I had the basic DU package). Has this happened to anyone else? I have the same issue :( very sad... I think they moved it to the Arabic package ahh, thank you.... maybe I should switch. I barely speak a word of arabic but I love love love fatafewat, it's the only channel I ever watch!

Ahhh Paris, there is never a bad time to go to Paris! I have been in the winter several times and I love it just as much, if not more, than when I have visited during the summer months, with all of the tourists and price hikes etc. Yes, it can be quite cold but often the sky is clear and the city feels crisp and alive. Definitely do it!

Hi Muu, my DS1 had the hugest umbilical hernia you have ever seen. It came up when he was around 5 weeks old and by the time he was about 2 it had gone in a fair way. Would your LO need a general anaesthetic? if yes, then I would not even contemplate the procedure. My son is now 4 years old and while his belly button looks different to everyone elses, DH and I have decided to wait until he asks us about it (I don't even think he has noticed that his is different!). Maybe he will be fine with it and not even want it "fixed" but if he does, then fine, we will get it done for him. My 2 year old broke his leg at the beginning of the year and needed a general anaesthetic to put it back into place, it was not pleasant and it took him months to recover from it.

sorry October, but I think you are living in hope! I have heard a lot of people saying that it will start to cool down in the next couple of weeks, but I don't believe it for a second - I always find September the toughest month as it is when the humidity sky rockets. Vile. Anyway, goon on you for being an optomist!!!!!

Dr Elsa delivered my twins at City Hospital last November. She is brilliant, is she your current OB? I have no complaints about the hospital itself, the entire experience was great. Let me know if you have any more questions
