A rat ANYWHERE in the Ranches is a public health problem for the broader community, not an individual resident's problem (unless it is an escaped pet). I'll add this to the growing list of things to address with Emaar from the home owners' association.:\:

Ranches residents, please check out the newish website http://arabianranchescommunity.com/ and register your comments there. Most of us who serve on the home owners' association are registered and monitor it for community concerns/suggestions. Good luck with the rat problem, i'll mention it to Anup when i see him at the next meeting...

Lucy, i have to agree with previous posts: this is far too much drama and it's not going to stop any time soon. And you're due soon, you probably don't have the time or wherewithall for it. A good friend was in a similar situation: one week after paying visa, etc, new maid decided she wanted to go home. My friend explained the situation to Immigration who allowed her to transfer the visa and funds to another maid. Perhaps they might be as accommodating for you? Good luck, honey.

I work for the government and labor laws DO apply to us, too. In management, we must provide 3 months notice, a provision ratified last year, though i don't think they can make it retroactive if his original contract said 1 month, especially if he's at a GRE (government related entity), not direct government. They certainly have the discretion to waive reimbursement of housing, etc. His company is either trying to screw him or don't know what they're doing; either way, he should go to the Ministry of Labor for a fair and legal settlement. If he decides to negotiate, tell him to compare this to carpet shopping - this is their starting price, he needs to counter back with exactly what he wants and find a compromise with them that he can live with. good luck!

I recently purchased my first varifocals from Rivoli - don't. The prescription was correct, but pupil measurements were not - in short, they did not work out. A friend recommended Magrabi for replacement lenses and they did a great job. I also bought expensive Bulgari frames :) Frames + lenses, anti-scratch, anti-glare totalled AED1800. My insurance covered my eye exam by an excellent opthamalogist at Dubai Mall Medical Center, Dr. Millicent Grim. I have no idea about UK costs, but hope the above helps. Good luick!
