I thought the food was better at Pai Thai - more choice, better prepared - but Pier Chic was gorgeous. We went there (PC) for our anniversary and it was truly romantic. Many congratulations on 20 years of marriage.

Hi ladies. Bored with the usual sushi and Thai, and too lazy to go to the shops and cook. Can anyone recommend q good place to order from for delivery to Jumeira? Many thanks.

I haven't been to Rhodes Mezzanine, but have been to the others. I thought Pier Chic was extremely romantic, good, unobtrusive service, good food but not great. Reflets on the other hand had excellent food, really great. Service was overly attentive I thought. Not very romantic at all I thought as we were out in the middle of the rest and all we could see were girls in very short skirts. May be more romantic in one of their side booths and, to be fair it was a biz dinner. Did I mention fab food? Hope that helps.

I would go. It's been just under 10 years, but I went to Joburg for work and I think I stayed at that same hotel. It was nice, we had a conference so I walked back and forth to the conference center for a few days. I didn't feel unsafe, but, as others have said, I was super diligent. I was there before the rest of the conference contingent and I checked out restaurants alone (there were some great ones), did some shopping (love, love, love the Young Designers Emporium as mentioned). I went to Nelson Mandela's house, did a mini tour and went to the flea market. I arranged for a driver through the hotel and between him and a guidebook I saw a lot and had a wonderful time in a very different place from what I was used to. I didn't feel comfortable the whole time, but when I didn't I asked to leave. The driver (all 5'2 of him) did not let me out of his sight the whole time, which was not comforting as I think I could have taken him, but the hotel provided a good service. If you haven't been there it's a nice two days. That said, if it's between Italy and SA and one you can extend and one you can't - I would take the one with the extension and do something romantic and fun with OH.

What are you making for the main? I think a good (and extremely easy one) is prawns in garlic and oil. Garlic and chili (or chilie flakes) chopped up, about a quarter cup of olive oil and prawns are all you need. Heat oil on high, add chili and garlic, stirring for 1 minute. Add prawns until just cooked. Serve with great bread.

First, really agree with the OPs that the best thing to do is go to a dietician. You've been diagnosed quite early so have time to get everything in check and in balance for the remainder of your pregnancy. I saw Belinda at Cooper Clinic, she was good. There is a book, Managing your diabetes by Lois Petersen which I found helpful. I would also recommend getting a diabetic cookbook just for some ideas - Kiokinu (sp) has a ton. Here's what I learned - the more complex the carbohydrate the better (ie, the brown-er). Get rid of any refined sugars and carbs in your diet. I also learned to eat small snacks regularly to stabilize my blood sugar. For breakfast I would usually have hard boiled eggs on the go, you can have spelt bread with a nut butter (no sugar added), and if I was desperate on time I would have a Nature Valley granola bar and just get in under the carb limit. For weekends I would have a breakfast burrito as whole grain tortillas are fine. If you go over, take a walk and it will stabilize your sugar some. For snacks I would typically have a small piece of fruit (apple or pear or berries) with a small handful of nuts. I would have my brown carb at lunch - brown rice, whole grain pasta. Then another snack (as above or granola bar) and then for dinner a lean protein and veggies. HTH and good luck.

We got a swing for DS and it worked really well for a period of time - like 8 weeks to 4 months! After that I transitioned him to the proper cot and it was really easy. If she's good with the motion, maybe look at a swing or a hammock?

Thanks ladies. Tentatively booked Reflet (per the other thread, thanks) as they will be in and out of the airport, but will be spending some time googling the other recommendations and may change it up. I, sadly, don't get out that much so haven't been to any! Really appreciate the recommendations. They are great. They pack small, are reasonably easy to get on (I'm uncoordinated and I can). Very light and I can take DS for an hour plus in it - he's 12 kilos. Highly recommend it. As for perf v original, I like the original better as it seems to fit more comfortably on me. The arm straps seem more padded. I don't think the fabric will make a ton of difference as almost everything is hot here. If you call/email baby souk I'm sure she would let you try both, she's great.

We got ours done there, they give you a cute certificate with a lock of hair. The girl was quick and fine. They have a DVD player they use and she even painted DD's nails. Mine were 2 years (DD) and 6 mo (DS) and I would recommend them.

Austin and the hill country is fab, about 3 hours drive but completely boring and flat until you get just outside Austin. But the city is great, good food, music and just very eclectic. Not so typical college town. As PPs said, San Antonio is great too. Very different vibe, more history with the Alamo and fantastic river walk. There are two or three hotels that are right on the river, very fun to stay there. I think it's a similar length of drive. If you're after more of a day trip Galveston is good. If you go to Austin San Marcos (the outlets) is not too far out of your way and has super cheap shopping.

We had a breakthrough last night and DS nursed at his 3 am feed!!! I don't know if this is back to normal or not, but it's definitely a step in the right direction. Thanks so much for all your help - I was really stressed out about this and it helped to know others have been here and to have some ideas.

Thanks ladies, I appreciate all of the ideas and support. I went on Kellymum and it does sound like striking v weaning, so I will keep at it. I think I'm still in shock as it seems so out of the blue, but something must have prompted it. He did drink quite a bit of water today (shocker), so I'm happy the hydration concern is not as pressing, but he won't drink milk from the sippy (or the bottle or the breast). I'll try all your suggestions and keep at it. And I had to chuckle at the "he didn't waste away" comment, HAK, as DS is almost 12 kilos so he is in no immediate danger of that! I guess this is just the start of the contest to see who's will prevails..

Thanks Holly, I will try the necklace. Yes, he's a food monster so not too worried about that, he just doesn't drink hardly at all so the milk was what I counted on to keep him hydrated. Off to find necklace... ETA, sadly even some bling didn't work. Could be he's weaned himself, but I was looking for another couple of months... I'll keep at it. edited by txjuliet on 21/03/2011

1 cup of milk plus one tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar, stir it in, leave it for 10+ minutes and then stir again and you have buttermilk. You can also buy laban (the one in the milk section) as an approximation - it's a bit thicker but really nice when a recipe calls for buttermilk.

Apple does that. I don't remember exactly if it was 400 or 700dhs, but the conclusion was it doesn't worth it... That's what I was afraid of. I'll give them a call tomorrow and get some info. I will be so sad not to have my iPhone until the new one is out but I can't see paying all that for a 4 right now.

My screen on my 3G is cracked. It still works and I was trying to hold out until they release the 5, but it's just getting worse. For anyone who has had this repaired, could you tell me the cost and where you had it done? I bought it in HK duty free so no warranty. Many thanks.

Otherwise there are some local reps for tiny tots and baby cheeks, there may be others. PCM - doing well. I hear you on illnesses - there were a couple weeks there where I saw the paed more than DH. He denies it. My email is user name at gmaildotcom, perhaps we could all follow up? Great to see the interest!

Mine (2.5 yo) is learning counting and alphabet (although she already knew them). She's learning phonics (only a bit) and can recognize her name. I think next year she learns how to write the letters. She has an Arabic teacher come in once a week as well. If you ask the school you are applying to to give you a list of skills the look for in their assessments that may be helpful to see and evaluate against. HTH.

Baby splash starts at 3 months. They have lessons at the Dubai Ladies Club and (I think!) the Lakes in Dubai. I took mine at 3 months and he liked it, enough singing to keep him interested.
