Shaks, might it not be one of those ideas which is floated, and then, depending on the reaction from schools, is implemented (or not)?

The only people allowed to live with you under your roof are people under your sponsorship or visiting family members. Valid residence permit has nothing to do with it, legally.

No worries, Daisy, Beachcombers is v family oriented and has a special corner with a kids' menu. It's right on the beach, so children can play there. It is a self-service buffet, so quite casual anyhow, as you say. Enjoy!

Just wanted to add my moral support. My mother suffered from dementia and it was worst when she thought she was all right. I think Sue B may be right, if you carry on working (and even if not), he will need someone around 24 hours a day as he may have no concept of time or day or night and will need constant supervision. I wish you all the best for this long and difficult process you are going to have to live through. Might you and he not be better off for support and understanding in your home country?

I'm sure I read somewhere that too many showers and baths are bad for your skin, particularly children's skins. Depletes the skin of its natural protective oils, or something.

I'm fairly sure you'll only get qualified native French teachers there, I've always understood it was the best place to go for French - certainly, in London, French families whose children were at English schools would send their children to the Alliance Francaise to keep their French to a native level of fluency (written and spoken).

The Real Thing actually should have about 35% alcohol in it, which is why it's unobtainable round here :(

I've never stayed there, but like the look of the Al Ain Rotana. I don't know, by "special garden", do you mean the Oasis, or something different altogether? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Ain_Oasis

I once had a hair washer try to get me to book a facial with them. Her selling point was 'but your skin looks so old maaaaaam'. No facial, no tip, silly cow. That's been keeping me going all day, hope AA82 reads it and laughs. Sorry, Daza :(

Alliance Francaise is not a language school, it's the French equivalent of the British Council - http://www.afdubai.org/presentation-de-lalliance/ edited by Vdella on 16/02/2013

Some of the problems discussed earlier on the thread may also be caused by some employers not holding Middlesex degrees in equally high regard as they do those awarded by traditional Universities. Some employers can be less impressed with the degrees awarded by the post-1992 "new Universities" that were created after a rule change that allowed technical colleges and vocational polytechnics to call themselves Universities. That would not only apply to Middlesex University in Dubai, though, it would apply across the board to a large number of post-1992 "new Universities" across the UK, and not just to their outposts.

It's not to do with income tax, it's to do with labour law, sponsorship, and free-lancing. It is illegal here for teachers to tutor pupils and be paid by the parents over and above the salary the school pays them. Just like it is illegal for a maid who lives in her sponsor's house to work "part-time" for anyone else for money. It seems the authorities are stopping turning a blind eye to these things. edited by Vdella on 16/02/2013 It seems that the authorities are cracking down on anyone who is working for anyone other than the sponsor... I'm not sure, can you not get a free-lance licence, which would mean you're sponsoring yourself? I suppose it's just not worth it for teachers employed by schools to then get a licence for free-lance specialist subject tutoring.

I think the penalty for being caught is being more strictly implemented these days and possibly the schools themselves are now being fined if they allow their employees to do this. edited by Vdella on 16/02/2013

Seattle's a beautiful place, I'd love to return some time. It does seem to rain rather a lot, even in summer:) We went in August a few years ago and left it late to book the flights, so it was extremely expensive on BA direct from London. If you have firm dates and are able to, I would snap up those direct Emirates flights ASAP, as prices increase nearer the time.
