It didn't even occur to me that it could be a wolf spider, but I think it was a red back, and a friend of mine has seen 5 in her garden, just down the road. He's only 7.5 lbs so he's damned lucky to be alive. We are in Springs in temp housing, and he was in the garden when I was about to put the kids down last night. I noticed when I was back from putting them to bed that he was twitching a lot and was very restless, but didn't think much of it. He came to me as I was online so I picked him up and noticed a puncture that had a bit of blood coming from it to the right of his nose, and that it was really swelling up. My DH had just left earlier for business, and I have no sitters, and it was my kids' first day of school so I didn't want to wake them in the middle of the night to take them out. Was a long stressful night, and I was worried he would die, as he was panting a lot and his heart was racing and he spasmed throughout the night. I was planning to take him after the school run, but he seemed fine when I got back. I left it a bit, but then noticed that he was not eating or drinking, and he had diarrhea and vomiting as the day progressed. Got a pretty bad sitter on short notice (busy bees) and went for eve appt at vets, after kids were asleep. Found out he was in anaphylactic shock, which I feel awful about. Poor little guy could have used a steroid shot last night, and had my DH been home, he would have taken him in for an emergency appt. He's not had any water or food today, and was prescribed antibiotics. I'm pretty freaked out, as we're about to move into a bigger place next week in the Meadows (in Springs now), and my kids are 5 and 8, and this is not something I care to repeat! Fingers crossed he will be better tomorrow, bless him. <em>edited by verdeque on 09/09/2012</em>

I just used busy bees, based on finding them here. 50 dirhams and hour plus taxi. The sitter was nice but not great English. My kids were already asleep (I had to go for an emerg vet appt) and she was passed out when I came in, with a blaring tv. My kids are older, so no big deal, but I would ask not to have Katrina if you wanted someone who's English was decent. I'd still use them again, but would be more picky about who was sent. The thing is, these girls work all day and then must be knackered by the time they come to you. I'm going to work on finding a teen connection here soon. But if you will be home, you should be fine, just be clear on phone about requirements.

Funny, I just had a last minute appt at Pet Connection as my dog was bitten by a red back spider! Portuguese vet there, said he's been there 5 months. I mention this only because might be a diff vet than Buy Me a Pony saw, and he was adequate for what I needed this eve. I've heard great things, too, about Nad al Sheba, so next time maybe I'll try there.

I like dodgy, anyway! Sounds affordable ;). So what do you reckon is a good daily rate, then? I'm in denial that in one week we will be chucked out of our furnished temp place into an EMPTY house, no white goods, no bedding, nada, so I'd better get on it!

Had this once in the US. Freeze any goods that are still ok and bleach out your cupboards and inside every crevice, where eggs can fit. The traps help (the ones that are triangles) but once the moths start, you have to be pretty aggressive. Sorry I can't help with the traps, but bleach water will help. Do take the shelves out so you can clean where the shelves meet the walls (if that makes sense).

You will meet people in days! I've been here a week and have already made friends here on EW, as well as a great person at the pool (drank wine together last night), and someone who'll be my gym (and wine drinking) buddy at Spinneys yesterday. Good luck!

I just got a Lancer from Dollar today for 1601 a month. I did the booking online and put in the code ssp. I then dealt entirely by phone with the booking. 50 extra dirham to have my husband on it. I can renew every month at same price. I think Yaris was the same cost. grr, that makes me angry! Diamond quoted me 1850! I'll ditch my GSX and look at Dollar next month. What's the ssp code?

But even when I asked for cheapest at gargash it was 2000 per month. I don't think you'll find much less than 1800 per month, and from what I've seen here, if you do, you may have dodgy fines/fees tacked on. We're also trying to figure out a long term solution, and may do some sort of finance through the bank, but that's after we find a place to live!

Hi We just rented thru Diamond lease. I think the cheapest you'll find is a Lancer for about 1850 per month. Gargash is mentioned here a lot, but they gave me a 2000 per month quote till I was about to get off the phone, then told me to call back for a good deal. I liked Diamond, and took at taxi to the boonies to get there!

Hi We are in a short term let here and will only stay for one month but have the option to renew each month. You pay a bit of a premium, BUT, the great thing is that phone, internet, cable, gardener, 1xweek cleaner, maintenance, and all DEWA bills are included. We have a furnished 2 bed in the Springs with a nice garden and pretty nice furniture for AED18k per month. You can get a lot cheaper, but we have 3 pets so had less options. If you go onto dubizzle look up PK Properties (who we went through) and Arabian Escapes. You can do a short term rental search. If I didn't have kids and pets, I'd probably just do a monthly rental indefinitely, but maybe in the Marina. There are a lot of properties, but about 75% of the ones you see on Dubizzle aren't available, so it's better to simply call them. Good luck!

5 days normal eating (not gorging lol) and 2 days under 500 cal (not consecutive), but my goal is to do sun tue thur under 500. Apparently it sparks something in the body, besides hunger. My sister has been doing it for a month or so and lost a considerable amount, besides stuffing herself on normal days. So we'll know which days to steer clear of your posts, then! I would be a bear to be around on those two days. That reminds me of the diet that's big in the US, the HCG diet. I had a friend that lost 30 pounds in 6 weeks doing it.

She goes to bed too early....... That made me laugh! No, I saw it, but it just made my head spin, so it had the desired effect! I am heading to camp in Al Safa today, so I was going to have a look around there. Going to bed early is something I do not, regrettably, do enough!

From Springs 14 go onto SZRd but from Hessa St not past Meadows. Keep driving straight on SZRd, turn right at the Safa exit net to the Pepsi Cola factory just past oasis mall. Go straight to the traffic lights and the new Safa Campus is on your right as you go through the lights past the bowling alley. Traffic on that turn off is a nightmare in the mornings though. Good luck, I'd move my kids to DBS if I was you. Brilliant, thank you! They are in camp in the am so I will jump on szr there. Google maps had me going through Meadows, which didn't seem right. I'm dying to time it, adding for traffic. Re DBS, can you tell me why? I have very little insight into that school, and I like the vibe at Safa, so was hoping for a balance of creative with academic excellence. I wish I'd toured it back in May when I was here on a recon trip. Selfishly, I love this area, and would like to get a bigger place in Springs or in the Meadows, and my husband has an 8 min commute to work so it's ideal, but I also want to do what's best for the kids, and make sure they have fun (read - not an insane amount of homework) and learn while we're here. TIA! :)

Verdeque, have you tried Google Earth? I don't follow the directions but do use it to pinpoint where I want to be. I have used a map and a gps, but Al Khail Road is under all sorts of construction which means you go several miles out of your way (I know, typical here) to make a u turn, and I'm just trying to find the most direct way. The 'short cut' seems to take me 30 min from here. I think I'm chasing a dream and will end up having to move closer to the school (we are in a monthly rental just for a few weeks) if we don't get into/move to DBS. It's tough, because I love Safa, I just don't love the drive!

My God you have a chance to get your kids into DBS? Take it! I thought that school had a wait list as long as Emirates rd!! Save yourself the headache. Just takes 1 accident on SZ Rd, right when it's time to pick up the kids, to ruin your day in a big way. What I liked about Safa is that it's a very warm & creative environment, with excellent results. I don't know anything about DBS, I just know that I like this area for living and that it has a great reputation but that's it. What have you heard about it, other than it's hard to get into?

Ok, I'm new to Dubai, but is there something wrong with the Iranian hospital? I'm sure they deliver perfectly healthy babies all of the time, and that they've got the staff on hand to deal with anything that could go wrong, which is rare. I also agree that you should drive over and register with them and not worry so much about your childbirth. My god, the hospital in England where I gave birth to my son was a hovel, truly, but we all survived and came out the other end and have some hilarious stories from the experience. Focus on your baby and the joy to come, and try not to worry too much. I had two high risk pregnancies, and it all worked out in the end. If your childbirth isn't going to be straightforward, the hospital won't matter that much, it's the epidural you'll be after. Also, if your DH can't be there in the room, do you have any women friends who can be there with you to hold your hand and steer you through?

I am surprised at how much I already love Dubai (other than the heat right now) and am keen to get into a groove, but I'm wondering if trying to move last minute to DBS just to save the hassle factor makes sense. I dont understand why anyone would complain a dog barking sporadically during the daytime? Yes, if I couldnt sleep at night it would be a problem but not during the day. Perhaps the folk who complain are not that used to dogs? Best of luck finding her a home. Its such a difficult time of the year for adoptions as there are so many abandoned animals, and she would also be competing with puppies Ha, we are coming with our two dogs and cat, and I am dreading this very issue. One of our dogs has even failed doggie boot camp! The bark collar works for one, but the other one seems to have a pitch that has defied 4 diff types so far. He is perfect in every way but his yapping all the time. Does my head in, but, we're flying them over next week, so I'm hoping I won't be in same predicament as OP. OP, btw, we are planning to get additional training once we arrive, as we anticipate complaints if we don't keep our dogs in a lot. Have you looked into training? And if your dog is bigger than our 7 lb yapper, a bark collar does wonders.

Giving a deposit is normal, standard so feel free to ask for one. I would happily pay one to a landlord who seemed sane and reliable - qualities I just didnt find in the dodgy agents however Hilsbils, we are heading out in two weeks and are thinking about making a last minute move decision & leaving our beds & misc bits of furniture behind & just moving into a furnished place. The concept of all in short term seems brilliant, and I've seen some on dubizzle, but would you mind telling me where you found yours direct from ll? Dubizzle? Can you just stay on indefinitely?

Yes, we are def up for that! Can't wait to explore from Dubai! I told my kids about a post here on EW where a woman said every time she camped she woke up with scorpions under her pillow. Thankfully she was under the stars, and that's just not an option for me! Tent will be packed away! We have had a beater RV for the past few years, and have loved it, and I wish I could have something like that in Dubai! I must admit, I really enjoyed being able to drive with the kids hanging out in the RV behind me, and then just leaving all of our stuff in it year round, and hopping in whenever we felt like it. Plus, it had AC. I saw one in Dubai on our last trip, and my DH just shook his head at me. That rig was def not swanky, but man it was fun. Sold it last weekend, sigh.

this is the most hilarious thread, particular the helicopter post! I never thought about bringing toys to Dubai! And the comment re the hands on a v-b***** remind me of something that happened to me a long time ago.... Back in the late 90's our house was burgled when we were away. It was obviously young kids, as they took all of our booze and left my bullet style v-b***** on the sofa, in plain sight, as some sort of 'ha ha we found your toy,' I guess. The police were called out and fingerprinted the whole place (my toy had been put away). It was a female officer, and she told me she couldn't get any prints, so I sheepishly proffered up said toy, in hopes that we could get the b******* that stole everything from us. So there it was, along with numerous other items, covered in black fingerprint dust, on our dining table. I asked her if it was helpful in getting prints, and she told me all she could pull off of it was smudges!!!! I about died of embarrassment, but it is also one of the funniest little moments, too.

God, I should just forbid myself from posting late at night! That's when all of the fear sets in, and things always look better in the light of day. EW is tricky, isn't it? It's hard to be objective from this side of the world, I guess. I'm sure it'll all be fine, it's just that I'm in the eye of the storm (ie pre-move) right now, and I'm quite sad to leave my place and friends here, having no idea of where we'll be. But, we are adventurers, and have lived all over the place before, so I'm sure we'll have a great time of it. We're super friendly and love to drink & hang out with friends & our kids' friends, so it's not usually that hard to meet people, it's just meeting people you click with, but I'm sure that'll happen. Just on our school tours, we met two couples we really liked and we all exchanged numbers. I like the ideas re art & meditation classes. I will be on the lookout for that, and I'm dying to try out paddle boarding & kite surfing, and would love to try salsa dancing. I also look forward to visiting the souks and trying my hand at cooking some local cuisine. My kids want to volunteer, so I'm going to try to find something they can be involved in, too. I'm also curious where Captain America goes for lobster fishing, cos I used to go crabbing a lot on the West Coast, late at night with a bottle of wine. Was fun! There def is no shortage of things to do there, it seems. And, as strange as it seems to have live in help, I detest housekeeping, so I DO look forward to having someone tidy up, so I can focus on the kids, work, ANYTHING but housekeeping! That alone could keep me in Dubai forever. I'm pretty sure we picked the right school - Safa - for the type of vibe of families there. Strangely, the only other school we really liked was Repton, on the opposite end of the spectrum. Umm Sequiem & Jumeirah are the right location, I just wonder about my kids' ability to go out and play in the street where they can make new friends. We drove around there and while I liked the location, The Lakes, The Greens and AR were prettiest. It'll all work out, I'm sure, and we are super excited to meet people from all over, and to eat!!! Thanks for the lift, everyone. I saw the weather there today. No wonder you want out! Holy ****, it's hot there!

Oh dear, now I'm having more doubts about coming than ever! We're coming at the end of August to Dubai, from a fantastic old Victorian in a great village in Western NY. I'm pretty freaked out, as I am NOT a posh type, despite having been surrounding by the trappings of materialism for years when I worked with bankers. Two questions - can you please advise as to any communities or areas to live where there aren't the sort of women referred to in this thread? I'm nearly 44 and life is too short to waste time with people who aren't down to earth and real. I have a huge fear that I'll move somewhere inadvertently filled with people who value material things & status. My DH has a great job and I will do something or another, as well, but money is not our driver in life. Second question - if you have a whinge session, can I come, too??? I won't whinge, I promise, but I'd love to meet down to earth people! I do hope that I fare better than OP, and am trying my hardest to be positive about this move. God forbid I come back to the US or UK a back biting snob! lol

I'm seeing a fantastic hormone specialist here in the US, one more visit before I come to Dubai, and I'm sad to leave him. Re dryness, he suggested using oil. I use coconut oil, but he also suggested jojoba, as well. Do it after the shower, just basically put up inside you. Also, lack of use can contribute to dryness, apparently. Who knew? Re yeast/thrush- take lots of probiotics, and cut out sugar and bready stuff for awhile. You can also use a suppository (US verbage)/pessary full of natural yogurt for a few eves at bed time. Good luck!

you might consider a serviced flat, as well. When I first moved to London, I did this, and had a taxi drive me around a bunch of areas to get an idea of what I'd like. I ended up in Barnes, then Chiswick, both of which I loved. The main thing will be transit, though. From Chiswick to Central London my commute was 60 min, train and then tube.

If they will also ship it back you could bring it with you. More important factors are your salary & housing allowance, if any. Central would be a haul, but Chiswick & Richmond would be a lot of fun for you still, depending on transit from your office. It's also not that cheap there, either, but if your budget allows, it's got a lot going on. <em>edited by verdeque on 18/06/2012</em>

Sorry you are going through this. Not to be nosy or upset you but do you know for a fact that he is actually divorced? I have three friends in recent years who have been in relationships with men who 'are divorced with kids not in Dubai' who were happy to carry on a relationship in Dubai but avoided commitment. Turned out in all cases that they were still married with wife not aware that marriage was on the rocks. wow, that would suck to be either woman in that case! It is far more common than you might think here. Far more common in all expat communities from what I have been told. makes sense, but god THAT has the makings of bitterness and revenge

Yes he is definitely divorced. In fact I have met all of his friends and the whole of his family, even spent a week in the UK with his kids recently and got to meet the ex when picking the kids up. He is divorced but still so so bitter and angry about it all even though it was 3 years ago. I'm sorry if my prior post comes across as harsh but life is short and it sounds like he's got some issues to work through, and that you don't really slot in just now. If you're wanting kids, as well, then you're really going to struggle. 7 months on, you know if you're in love or not, whether you want to try to make things work. The way you write it, it sounds like you're giving more than you're getting. If he doesn't know how he feels about you after 7 months, when will he know?

Too early to commit? 7 months doesn't have to mean marriage, but he certainly would know whether or not he loved you. You deserve better than this. He's not the one for you. If you do have the courage to break it off, this has the potential to be very grey, and to be honest, he seems like he's a selfish man, if he's thinking about revenge more than his relationship with you. When I say grey it seems like a selfish man could make this drag on and off again indefinitely, and will likely never commit. Let him go and if he gets a wake up call after some time has passed, you can decide what to do then.

An open mind and PA are the most important things to make sure you arrive with for sure. We looked at AR but opted for The Villa. AR is nice and equipped with pools, tennis etc, but all come with a premium, we compromised on facilities and went for value. I have an open mind, but not sure what a PA is. I doubt you mean PA as in personal asst, but if you do, in my dreams!!! Re the Villa, I keep hearing nice things about it. Is it that much further out than AR?

Can anyone tell me a) what is used to report income to the IRS? Is there something similar to a w-2? If not, is it purely just honor based? b) do allowances (car, housing, school, etc) show up on pay stubs as income? If people don't put there allowances down as income, or if they put down a lower income than they actually earn, how does the IRS do audits if there's no right to records in the UAE?

Interesting. It would be pretty challenging to then re-apply if we want to come back to the US, so not sure it's worth the hassle. I am assuming you are referring to reapplying for the US permanent residency? If you give up, I don't think you can ever get it back. I will stand corrected though. I have an accountant who is very well-versed in US and UK tax laws and she is currently living in Dubai. Our cases were quite completed too, but she was really knowledgeable and helpful for the past years. For anyone who wants her info, email me at my username at yahoo dot com. I will forward her contact info to you. :) Thank you, will do. I think you can get it back, but it's tricky, and they grill you as to why you gave it up and why you want it back. Sigh, so much money at stake.

You may be missing out on some things when you move to Dubai, and I won't lie, yes, there will be times when you wish you were back home. But, there is so, so much to gain by living here. You will wake up to beautiful sunshine days (all year round!) and hear the call for prayer in the evenings. There are gorgeous sandy beaches and you will spend many a weekend listening to waves breaking on the shore. Romantic nights out could mean dining under the stars at Pier Chic with a view of the Burj Al Arab, or champagne with nibbles on the beach at the One and Only Royal Mirage. Indulgent Friday brunches (especially at Al Qasr), abras across the Dubai Creek, bargaining at the Gold or Spice souks...This is a huge step, and a big adventure for all of you, but chances are, you are going to love it here =) I think you're right! But unless my DH gives up his green card and returns to UK residency, not sure how many indulgent brunches we'll be doing! But I'm super excited to do the souks & to camp in the desert, visit Oman, etc etc. And my kids are thrilled to go to a British school, as Daddy is a Brit.
