Just wondering if there are generally accepted norms here for what owners are allowed to let their dogs (and even cats) do in compounds with shared facilities like gardens or pools. Neighbours are letting their dog swim in the compound pool, which seems really unhygienic to me. Really don't fancy the idea of me or my family (or anyone to be honest, especially kids) going in after it has been used by a dog Am i overreacting? is this normal?? Some dogs also run around the communal gardens off the leash. Mind you, there are plenty of cats, including our own, roaming around too, so I may have to tread carefully (excuse the pun) if we do raise this with compound management.

I've done that at a brunch before (Beachcombers at JBH). It was a while ago so I can't remember what the price difference between packages was, but imagine it was fairly substantial and better in this case just to order a single beer/glass of wine. Its not just about the cost though. It's so easy to drink far too much with an all-in package!

Well I guess we could insist on her finishing her contract, but it wouldn't be too pleasant for anyone would it. So best to let her go a few months early next year. I'm not talking about letting her break her contract already. Her family is not happy with her not coming home now, but that's not my problem, she has a contract! Should have seen the writing on the wall - she asked me a while back already (August?) how much DH had shelled out to renew her visa, then went very quiet realising how she was really obliged to stay after that outlay!

I think it is a cultural thing, I spent many years in Colombia and they dont queue and no one gets upset, they just all so seem know who goes next etc but like us British we love to form queues even when there is no need we all just stand behind in a line....its amazing the difference with something like this and how some cultures like order and are quite pedantic about it.... Yes, it was like this in Mexico, a free-for-all. :) Yet, I noticed the elderly were given respect and special regard, if there was some semblance of a queue. Regarding the metro: Some expats come from countries where getting on the train is a fight to death with no regard for those trying to exit, and packing in like sardines is totally normal. While some expats adopt the "when in Rome" attitude, plenty of people take their habits and culture with them and have no intention of trying to adapt to those around them. What I can't understand is the complete lack of awareness of surroundings in, for example, MOE on a somewhat busy day. Do people not realize they are basically walking road blocks? Are they in a different dimension? [b'>I feel sometimes, like I am the only person trying to get out of other people's way. One day, I wondered what would happen if I didn't move. omg....was like the shoulder-checking Olympics.[/b'> In what culture is this normal? Even in tourist ridden areas with self consumed people--places like Las Vegas, Disneyland--never experience so many people just wandering without a care. This made me laugh! I have the same conversation with myself all the time! "What would happen if I didn't get out of the way?" Meanwhile, I just continue to do the "Hot Shoe Shuffle" dodging from left to right. My poor LO swaying away in her pram. Lol! I wondered too what would have happened if I hadn't have battled my way out of the toilet cubicle but stayed put until the incoming lady left 'my' cubicle and allowed me to exit properly!

Wasn't here in the 'old' days pre crash. Blimey! Sounds like its pretty much impossible to find routes to avoid it. With problems on Al Wasl and SZR till 2016 because of the canal, we were pondering moving back to the Ranches next year to avoid the traffic. Then i saw the post on huge queues to get out of there too!! Things change so quickly here that if you are renting you can be moving around all the time from ares to area to avoid the construction and traffic build up. Or you just accept it as a fact of life here...

Uh oh! I was just about to post regarding traffic jams on AL Wasl road and found this. Looks like its only going to get worse. Is anyone else finding it hugely busier on AL Wasl already? There are long tailbacks before all the traffic lights, which didn't exist before the summer. It took me over 30 minutes to get from Umm Suqeim 1 to 3 the other evening!!

Talking of people barging their way into lifts and metros before you've had a chance to get out the door, I had a new experience the other day.... Coming out of the toilet in one of the malls and a local lady tried to get in to my cubicle as soon as id opened the door and before I'd even got out! I had to really fight to get through the door! Unbelievable!

Having spoken to our maid again, the sale contract signing IS genuine, but I was also right to be suspicious! She doesn't really want to come back, but does realise she is contracted to stay until next summer. I did think she was very distracted and something was going on! She is older, feels she has done her time and her family wants her home. Her contract runs out in July when we are away for the summer. So it makes sense all round to find someone else earlier so that they can be settled for the summer when they will have to take charge, and let her break her contract early. I dont think having an unwilling maid around would be great to be honest. She is already not concentrating and getting lots of things wrong! Thanks for your advice ladies.

I didn't disagree with you at all OOpsieDaisy and MOlly. In fact I didn't bat an eyelid when she first told me. But then in retrospect I wondered if this was another of those oft-used maid ruses that I was ignorant of! I'm a bit green in these maid matters and don't want to get taken for too much of a ride! A friend says she's heard this one before, that she possibly just fancies going home for a bit and to offer to get the document couriered over for signature. I will suggest that first. If she is adamant that wont work, and she has to have a week off, then I think it's fair that its Taken as part of her annual leave rather than an extra freebie. I suppose the only other thing I'm really concerned about is whether there is a chance she may not return. Can An excuse like this be used as a way of getting out of a contract early? I know her family really wants her to stay in SRi Lanka.

A deed/contract to sell some land in SRi Lanka. There must be another way of doing it, surely. What sort of suspicious behaviour do you mean TB?? Any specific thoughts? We've all heard of maids asking to go home because of a death in the family, but has anyone heard of requests for others reasons like this?

If your friend is still looking, I have just found 2 gorgeous ginger and white male kitties in the park this evening. They are very cute, extremely friendly, purry. The vet reckons they are about 12 weeks, and probably dumped as they are clearly used to being handled and are not local Arabian Maus. They look like Domestic short hair and are very slightly fluffy. Will be posting pictures on the Classifieds once I get a chance.

As a slight aside, I've never quite understood how the 2 months penalty works when most/many of us will have paid in 1 or 2 cheques. Landlords will be sitting on more than 2 months rent in a lot of cases. Are they obliged to pay any amount over 2 months rent back to the tenant? We left our first property after 8 months, rent paid in 1 cheque, and didn't get anything refunded. Very good reason never to pay in one cheque!

DD's school has well and truly embraced the tablet as a learning tool. Children in the older years at least have to bring their own tablet to school every day. We were dismayed at first, but now that we have seen what can be done with some of the functional apps they use for collage, videos, presentations etc, are quite impressed. I do agree that this can mean too little practice with conventional writing etc though, which is a valid concern. There is a place for ipads, but not to the exclusion of paper, pen, books... After all, exam papers (not coursework of course) still have to be handwritten, so handwriting is not redundant in schools. Tablets are a fact of life and the future for our kids, so fighting controlled use (provided they get the balance right) in schools is pointless imho.

Hi Mrs P , Ours isn't young either, like your former maid, and to be honest she is amazing in that she works very hard, does lots of cooking for us too, looks after our pets and is 100 per cent honest and trustworthy, which we really value. So we do value her very much, but it still doesn't mean she can bully us into more money all the time. She has just asked for money again for doing the gardening in the summer (it does look beautiful i sdmit) and I have said no, she had little work to do and plenty of time to do it. She didn't like that one bit! Said she didn't care and it was fine, but it clearly wasn't given the emotional blackmail she came out with " ma'am I'm poor, you're not, what is 150 dirhams" blah blah. She now says she doesn't want to do the gardening any more, and she is a fool for doing it for free. Gee, the temper tantrums these women have. She complained again about her salary still being lower than before we employed her. I said she needed to raise this issue BEFORE we renewed her visa in JUly (we discussed it then and she said she was happy with the salary we decide), not after. Funnily enough I recall having problems on the money front with her last year at about the same time of year! It all blew over, but is very irritating and a total waste of my time and energies. Is it something maids do once they have a new visa and they have you over a barrel perhaps?!

I second that recommendation. My husbands just started seeing Andrew following a colleague's success with him. Can't judge the results for DH yet, but he has sent him for blood tests and discussed other tools, so using a good holistic approach on top of a very clean diet with recipes.

Izzy, no watering isn't really gardening, but that's all the 'gardeners' do and they still call themselves gardeners! Tbh our maid does a lot more than the actual ' gardeners', like pruning and weeding, so it's not just the watering she's taken on. Whatever it is or isnt called, if its doable within her normal hours, then it doesn't seem too unreasonable. Oopsiedaisy, I get what you mean about linking additional responsibilities to a pay rise - best not do that then (though you would expect it in most jobs). Seems overwhelmingly that maids watering (or 'gardening') is perfectly normal and not an additional responsibility that should be paid for on top. Thanks for confirming that ladies. Our maid is never happy with her salary as she took a pay cut to come here, but knows no one will pay her what she wants, so stays With us. That is her decision and she needs to lay off requests for more!

Well yes, Izzy and Molly, the same thought also ran through my head ie if she can manage it in her working hours, why cant it just become part of her duties without extra pay. However, I wasnt sure if it was reasonable to add to her duties suddenly (there was no mention of gardening when we employed her)? It is a bit cheeky when she only just had a pay rise last month when we renewed her visa! Which gives me an idea.... that pay rise coincided with her starting the gardening, so perhaps we could somehow link the two. And the gardener's pay is funding her pay rise! I guess the difficulty and issue of extra cash comes from having had paid gardeners until now. So she knows we are saving money by getting rid of the gardener and has her eyes on that cash!! if we had never paid for a gardener the scenario would be somewhat different. So it seems it is fairly normal to get the maid doing the watering if the garden is small and she can manage it witihin normal hours? I thought most people had gardeners, but perhaps not.

It's been mentioned on this thread already, but have you tried DESC for your 2 secondary school kids? It does have an excellent reputation for British curriculum. It is a long way out in the desert though. But it runs bus services all over. The primary school, DESS, is very hard to get into, but the sites are separate and nowhere near each other anyway.

Hi Coco. There is a big ad for the Kings schools in yesterday's 7days newspaper. Kings Dubai in Umm Suqeim (the original Kings, where our daughter goes) has spaces in year 3, which might work for you if you got secondary places in a secondary in Jumeirah/Al SUfouh (JC, DC, English COllege). The new Kings schools, AL Barsha and Nad AL SHeba are still generally open for applications, so presumably have spaces in all years, but not, as LOlacat correctly says, for year 10 and above. That could work for your year 3 and 8 children. Many (most?) people seem to have kids at more than one school when they have both primary and secondary age children. For a start, the same school may not work for 3 kids with different talents and personalities. Plus most schools, especially secondaries, run bus services. So i wouldn't be too concerned about getting them all into the same school. If two were in one school and one in another the eldest could use the bus service for example. Having said which, the new Kings schools won't have buses yet (but do plan to introduce a service in due course).

Bentota is not actually closer than Galle if you use the new highway, as you have to double back on yourself ie exit at Galle and then go back up the coast towards Colombo as far as BEntota. So more km and time than travelling to Galle, but far preferable than the coastal route anyway. If you do get a taxi at the airport (as we did in APril) be very careful to specify that you want to travel on the new highway, not the coast road. We assumed they would know the best route and got taken the slow way along the coast - it took over 4 hours!! Rush hour around COlombo in the rain - nightmare! I believe the taxi drivers don't always like to take people via the new highway because of the tolls involved, so make sure the driver knows you will pay the toll. Other than that, getting an airport taxi was easy and cheap (though I can't remember what fare we paid). There are a good few taxi desks at arrivals. Do also tell them what sort of vehicle you want. We were squashed in a saloon car for hours (bad choice on our part) and were far more comfortable on subsequent journeys in a van.

Yes, it's probably a case of living with poor maintenance or move in this market. The yelling at and harassing the gardeners is a slightly different issue though. Has anyone else experienced similar - compound security/maintenance guys objecting to outside gardeners coming into the compound? they say its for security reasons, but There's definitely more to it, particularly that they want to earn the money doing the gardening themselves. They have caused a lot of aggravation (actually reduced one very young gardener to tears). I don't see why they should monopolise the gardening/car washing services and act in such an intimidating, bullying manner on 'their' territory. They are like the mafia! Is this normal and acceptable??

No, we're in Umm Suqeim. Sounds like we're not the only ones then! But it does seem to vary a lot from compound to compound. It hacks me off when I go to friends' compounds and they're so beautifully maintained and manicured, then come back to trip over weeds at our place! It's odd because the lettings agents normally know which ones are well maintained and we were told this one was. Hmm! Harrimayne, have you found any way of improving things? Or is it just a case (as I suspect) of putting up with it or moving on? Not much incentive for landlords to please their tenants in this market is there.

I just had an identical call to April from someone claiming to be from Du advising me that I am the lucky winner of AED200,000. Fortunately I didnt fall for the scam (well not completely anyway). However, just a warning, it was very realistic, and despite being justifiably sceptical of this sort of call/SMS, I actually started to believe the spiel. I got put through to a 'supervisor' who said he was local, which really added to the believability of the call. he certainly sounded Arabic. Yes they are very clever: 'my name is xxxxxx (long Arab name), I am local, I would not joke with you....... It was only when he asked me to go and buy Du vouchers for AED1,250 from the supermarket and not put the phone down that I smelt a very big rat and said no, I wasnt going to do that. Swift end of call, no surprise! Im posting this here as another warning to all you ladies out here. I will call Du to report it in a moment and give them the number. But I also wanted to check on a couple of things that concern me. First, this was a missed call that I phoned back. I think I read in another thread that that is a problem for some reason I dont remember. Does anyone know why it matters that I called them back? Apart from confirming that this is a genuine line. Second, I did not give them any bank/phone account details, but they did ask for my ID number. Can they do anything with that number, and do I need to report that to the police? And yes I know, I was stupid of me to have given them any information at all.

You could also try Supercamps. My DD and friends have always been at WImbledon HIgh SChool, but there are quite a few locations. Very varied activities and generally pretty good. DDs favourite by far is Activ CAmps held at EMmanuel SChool in Battersea. Lovely staff, location and lots of exciting active activities. Not one for arty types though. You may struggle a bit with the enrichment goal. I don't think I've ever seen anything like creative writing for instance - more arts and crafts. The goal is much more enjoying themselves than anything else - it is the holidays after all! On dates, most, if not all, of these camps are held at private schools which break up earlier in JUly. You should find something running from mid-July certainly.

We went to Cape Town on our own pre-DD, loved it and always thought it would be fab for kids! There is loads going on at the waterfront aside from shops and restaurants (and isn't the aquarium there too?), like street entertainers - the groups of singers from the townships are really good - and you can show your kids the seals in the water or basking in the sun below too. The cable car is a great experience, and if you go up table mountain, there are lots of hamster like creatures running around (cant for the life of me remember what they are called!) that the kids might enjoy seeing. Another great one for the kids if you can get there would be the huge colony of little penguins at Boulders BAy, SImonstown. It's not that far away from Cape Town if I remember correctly, and you can get really close to them. Enjoy - Its an amazing place with loads to do, and Im very envious!

I was after the same sort of arrangement for the month our maid was on holiday and did find it surprisingly difficult to sort out. However, it all came together in the end. I think the good maids/agencies are very booked up and they just don't have capacity for this straight away. I took a hotchpotch of different maids from different agencies for a week or so whilst trying to sort out something regular. In the end, CleanCo (04 4279676) provided what I wanted. I had used them before, had no problems and they are quite cheap. The normal hourly rate is AED35/hour, but it is only 25 if you book 3x a week for 4 hours each time. The lady I have is fine, not the best. I've had a couple more ladies from them, both very good. If you can get Lemvax she is hotel trained and great (but not surprisingly quite booked up!). I recommend taking what/who you can and if necessary trying to improve the arrangement in time. I'm sure their schedules change all the time so availability will open up. My lady will be free later this week when our maid returns. Her name is LUcia. As I said, she is not bad, but you could probably do better. I had an awful experience with Helping Hand. The office staff were so rude! Also tried maids.ae. They seemed to have lots of maids available, possibly because they charge so much (45/hr). The maid was only passable for that money.

Or is it only the first one that has to be registered? Our first contract was registered by the agent but I don't suppose they are going to do it every year!

Thanks for your suggestions ladies. I will try Life Pharmacy for Calpol. Is it the bottle or the sachets they normally stock? I always find the sachets really handy for travelling, so try and keep some in. Perhaps I'll have to stock up in the UK in the summer - not long now. If I can't get Calpol it I'll have to give the Adol or Panadol a try. We too have the NUrofen for kids and DD does like that aswell (though not as much as Calpol). But it's useful to have the 2 different drugs accessible for those odd occasions (like this weekend!) when One drug alone fails to bring down a fever. You can alternate between the 2 drugs every 2 hours in such circumstances.
