After being soooooooo desperate at Christmas to find just Plain white lights, I finally got some; The part of Salwa road (and continuation) that leads down past the Ramada and the Centre (where Megamart is), go over the roundabout, over the flyover - past Homecentre on right hand side, over Electricity Intersection, and then on the right hand side you have a whole load of elctrical/ lighting stores on the way down towards the souq (top end of). That is where I found mine, and I think they have them all year round - about QAR 18-20 (cheap, Chinese). But - they are White!!!

If you're on Facebook, then search Dancesport for All, Doha. Or go onto their website http://www.dancesportforall.com/. I haven't done any of the classes, but his website looks Really good, so if that is anything to go by, then it should be good. I want to do Ceroc here in Doha, but nobody seems to do it. I'm even thinking of getting a licence (from UK/Aus) to teach it myself, but don't know how popular that would be here.

To be fair though, if you were anywhere in Europe, or Aus (or even the States I guess), you would have to pay a Whole lot more than QR100 for a lost parking ticket - that's my experience anyway. Also, I would pay a LOT more than QR2-5 to park in a City Centre in Europe or Aus for a few hours.

Just hi jacking the thread for a sec - one point on BA, they are now FANTASTIC on extra luggage (and this is why I choose to fly with them). For an extra 23 kilo suitcase (including the free 23 kilos that you get), you ONLY have to pay an extra £34 (THIRTY FOUR!), if you want to take anymore, then it is £77 for further extra bags! A-MA-ZING! Beats any of the other airlines hands down, you don't even get the privilege of extra allowance on Qatar, Etihad or Emirates if you are travelling business class (only if you are a silver/gold/platinum, etc card holder) - CRAZY!! :)

I agree with CCDoha. I have (and know friends who have) used Nemo at Glow (West Bay) - Really nice lady, and good colour. I had all over colour (get rid of grey!!!), and then half head of highlights on top - I think that was QAR450. Have not used anyone else, so cannot comment.

I don't have kids, and I have a Great time! I am 40 something, and have a great group of ladies that I socialise with, and we get together with husbands in the evenings and at weekends. I think there is a Lot to do in Doha, but like Anything/Anywhere, you need to make the effort Good luck with your decisions.

Hiya, Sorry CCDoha, you're wrong on the monthly network date for QPWN (Qatar Professional Women's Network), it isn't a Thursday (not the main event for the month anyway) - it is on a Monday night, with the next one taking place this Monday (24th Oct) at The Mango Tree, at The Pearl (but it is a RSVP event). They are on Facebook, or on their own website - www dot qpwn dot org. It is generally the last Monday of the month (it was in July and September (the last two I went to)) (Sorry, I said the third Monday in my reply below)

There are a few groups that meet regularly. If you click the events tab on this site, it will give you some information too. Tuesday Ladies Group (TLG) (tlgdoha.com) - Alternate Tuesdays at the Ramada Hotel from 9:30am - Lots of ladies. Paid for group (not expensive), and have various groups within it - i.e, book club, lunch bunch, movie club, mahjong, out and about group, sewing, etc. You can go along this Tuesday (25th Oct) - but wear something Pink for Breast Cancer. American Womens Association (AWA) (awaqatar.com) - once/twice a month. You don't have to be an American to join (but cannot be a member of the committee), and is a paid for group (again - not expensive) There is an informal group that meets out at The Pearl on a Sunday (at Alison Nelson's Chocolate Shop) (I think that is from 10/10:30) Qatar Professional Womens Network (QPWN) (qpwn.org) - They meet the third Monday Evening of the month from 6pm to 8pm - you can find them on Facebook too. Just a networking group - lots of ladies. And I know that there is a Doha Mum's, but not being a Mum, I know nothing about this. So, as you can see, there is lot's to get involved in, you just have to get out there. I have only been here since mid July (with five weeks of that time back in Europe), and I have a Great set of ladies that I socialise with. Separately to the above groups, we have our own group of Mahjong players meeting once a week, some also do bridge, and we also get out and about separately as well. It's easy when you start getting out there - Promise! edited by VRDoha on 22/10/2011

Silver6 - Nemo is only a colourist. I have only used Glow the once, so do not know who to recommend for cutting, but there seem to be quite a few there. There is also Salwa Road. I have curly hair, and apparently there is a lady at Salwa who specialises in cutting curly, so I'll try them.

Hi ladies, I went to Glow (West Bay) yesterday for the first time, and their prices seem reasonable compared to what you guys are talking about. I had all over roots done, and half head high/low lights and wash/blow dry, and that cost QR450. For an extra 195/225 (depending on stylist), I could have had a cut too. Nemo (Lebanese hair colour lady) was very nice, and overall I found staff at Glow friendly and quite helpful (and not pushy to buy additional products, etc). A lady who had just had hers finished just (after I had started with Nemo) was almost in seventh heaven with her colour, and praised Nemo so much that I thought Nemo may have paid her to say it for my benefit!!! Sorry Ladynorth, I didn't mean to hijack your post - I know you said you weren't interested in Glow, but I think the rest of the thread has moved on too!

Spinjoy - These ladies make it sound dreadful, and if I had never been, and read what they have written, I would be Absolutely Dreading it!!! I love it here! I don't have kids (and this may be an easier way to get involved with the place), but a place is What You make it. There are Soooo many friendly ladies groups, and sometimes I am almost relieved if I have a day when I Don't have to go out. There is always something to do, or somewhere to go whether you have kids or not. I don't work, but I do drive, and I often drop DH off at work and take off in the car. It's OK, just watch the roundabouts - that's where the drivers seem most crazy! I have been made to feel sooooo welcome here, and it is great. I see my friends here more regularly than I did my friends in the UK (or anywhere else in the world that I have lived in fact!). I've been to Dubai (albeit just for a couple of visits), but I find that too Glitzy and impersonal. Doha has more of an intimate feel rather than tooo small! DH's job is no picnic, but it's Not dreadful, and keeps him challenged, and that is not with a large blue chip expat co, a locally based one. Be positive, and if you need a chat, please contact.... It looks like you might need some positive input! :)

We have three extension leads that were bought here, and they are all fine, and no complaints at all! Aren't most electrical things made in Chine / Far East nowadays anyway?! I would say that grocery shopping here is particularly cheap, and although sometimes you have to visit a couple of different stores, you can get most normal items here. Carrefour is in a lot of Malls, and sells most stuff (own branded tends to have French labels though!), Megamart has stuff that is different (example for a special dish for a dinner party, etc). So, generally I haven't missed anything back from the UK. You can even get Galaxy Hazlenut chocolate (something I couldn't get in the Far East!) If you use particular hair products (not necessarily top of the range), like John Freida, Tigi, etc, that you can buy in Boots/Tescos, etc, easily; I have not found them here (but then again, haven't looked too hard!) Something that I haven't looked for here (but couldn't get in Singapore without a doctors prescription), were ear drops for mild ear infections (i.e., from swimming pools). In UK I'm sure I didn't need a doctors presciption, and could buy over the counter. I Think that's it! Good luck with the move.

Great Question, and thanks for asking. I am new to Doha (and this site), and was really confused about what DH meant.... Even to the point, where at the beginning, I thought DH it was Domestic Help!!! Ha Ha (now I feel Really silly!) ;)

Hi there, I saw this post, but it looks like it is a little old now.... I am new to Doha, and would like to get involved in a Mahjong group. I even have my own set of tiles, so if there is a group of ladies wanting to make up a four, then that would be great too. I have played on and off for years with family (and more recently (and regularly) in Singapore with expat ladies). I have books, and some further instructions too, so Could teach, but would prefer to play, and meet new people! Thanks

ps. Picklz - How are you getting there? I've been looking on the net, and the easiest/cheapest way seems to be going on Etihad via Abu Dhabi (even though in the wrong direction for an hour!) I don't believe that there are any direct flights from here to Cy?

Hi there, Being half Cypriot, I visit Cyprus pretty regularly. Le Meridian is a pretty impressive hotel on the outskirts of Limassol (my brother puts his clients up at this hotel, and has never had any complaints). There are stray cats in Cyprus, but I wouldn't say that there are armies of them, nor that you will be inundated anymore than at any other top hotel in the area. Have a Great time - it is a Great place. VRDoha ps. Sorry, now for a little rant... Cyprus is NOT part of the Greek Islands, and is not part of the Greece. The only reason it is Greek Cypriot (in the South) is to make the difference between North and South Cyprus (North Cyprus being Turkish Cypriot). :)

Thank you Gray Girl, the only reason I asked on this site was because it was under the What's On tab, with no further contact info. I had just found their website, and coming back to this thread, to say found it, when I saw your reply.. Thanks again! It may help other newbies in Doha though, as it seems that there isn't much that goes on between end of June and September!

H there, Just arrived in Doha yesterday... Exciting! Got a cab into business district mall (through our hotel) and it cost us 40 riyals, and then got a cab back (from outside the mall) (although some difficulty explaining to driver Where to go!!), and it Only cost us 12/13 riyals! I understand the best way is to get to know a particular taxi/cab driver/company, and then just use them. Any Numbers please? We shall be getting a car, but only one, and therefore one of us will not be driving daily! Thank you. :)
