I have been in a panic about my family in FNQ all week and completely forgot about all of the Aussies on EW! It would have been a big support having EW up whilst checking the bureau of metorology cyclone updates and web updates like a mad woman all night on Wednesday! Would have been nice to see it on the news but it was all about Cairo. A storm the size of Hurricane Katrina that could have potentially killed thousands obviously wasnt quite as important! I think Australia can be forgotten at times being so far away from the rest of the world! Anyways, Shellly so glad your family fared ok. Mine are in Cairns and Gordonvale just south of Cairns and I was beside myself with worry when Yasi was heading straight for us, calling them constantly for updates, but everyone is fine and only a bit of vegetation damage. A few friends further south with some minor building damage and no one hurt thank god but I have a friend who lives here originally from Tully though who's grandfathers house was ripped apart and she couldnt get a hold of her dad on the phone. Poor thing must have been beside herself. Its quite a miracle how Cairns had had another escape from mass destruction, but makes me sad how the media is downplaying the 'devastation' just because Cairns and Townsville escaped the worst of it. I dont think the poor people in Cardwell, Tully and Mission would be agreeing they got off unscathed. Anyway, the good news is all (bar 1) survived and I think the state govt, police and emergency services did a commendable job in evacuating people and ensuring everyone was as prepared as possbile. As Anna Bligh righly put it 'property can be replaced but people cannot'. What a patriotic and stressful couple of weeks though, thinking of all Aussies affected by the recent crazy weather and hope this is it for now x So glad to hear your family weathered the storm-what a relief

Wafi Gourmet's home cooked selection is wonderful-otherise our local Indian takeaway with the most unlikely name of Sputhern Fried Chicken Food Garden-no idea how they thought that up!-that has the best and cheapest selection including an Arabic, Chinese, Indian and Western menu-including some of the best kibbeh I have ever tasted and some yummy Indian dishes-plus they come so quickly and the food is so hot-not a restaurant I guess but we love it!

hey ladies Im always sick in my pregnancies im about 6 weeks at the mo any more suggestions to help the sickness? My dh is convinced my doctor gave me something on my last prgnancy to stop the sickness but i cant remember i think his dreaming ? been eating ginger biscuits but i hate them grrrrr Poor you-drinking Bitter Lemon soft drink was the only thing that worked for me

Am in Bur Dubai, the sunshine just makes the gray shroud of sands glow brighter and the wind makes my struggling bougainvillea dance uncontrollably on the balcony! I am just glad I am not outside :) We're down in the consulate area-it realy isn't that windy-must be sheltered perhaps?

Have you opened all the cupboards under the basins?-ours adtually have a very small gap into the wall cavity where a cat can slip in but found it nearly impossible to reverse and get out again-as we found out the hard way-keeping everything crossed for you <em>edited by wuffles on 02/02/2011</em>

Depends what you mean by "is it safe"? Will they get mugged? Probably not. Will they get constant stares, verbally harassment, guys following them etc - well, yes they will. I unfortunately had to head to Bur Dubai recently, in the middle of the day, walking along Bank Street. Lost count of the amount of times someone passing said in a low hushed voice "hey baby" LOL - and I'm far from 18 and attractive ;) The creek area at night is full of men sitting in groups or solo. Deira is heaving with prostitution and dodgy dealings. My advice is, don't let them go by themselves at least. edited by Pomegranate on 31/01/2011 I must be way past my use by date!!!-have lived in Bur Dubai 6 years and have honestly never once heard such comments!

I often wander down the Creek alone as late as 11pm and have never had any issues at all-mind you I am neither young not attractive but have always found the atmosphere down there comfortable. perhaps the trick is to not look too conspicuous and certainly dress conservatively. I think many of the men you see down there are just out to enjoy the cool night air and escape from crowded apartment blocks and of course to play cricket on every available spare blade of grass. They will get a little more attention in Karama but it seems to be good natured bantering as much as anything

U must always declare going into OZ. Don't u watch Border security on TV? If u tell them then usually its OK but if u don't they really frown upon it. I got pulled up once with pasta in a sealed bag from Italy! Look at a really nice Pasmina for the ladies. Perfumes (local ) for both is always a hit. Those painted camels and even a container to burn oud in. I do watch Border Security-declare all the wooden items etc-I just had a fixed idea-apparently incorrected-that packaged chocolate coated dates were not declarable........don't worry-will be declaring them from now on in-but wonder why customs didn't comment on them when they opened my case???????

I'm ashamed to say I have never declared dates-didn't realise you had to till I read the recent thread about it-that being said-even on the odd times my suitcase has been searched no-one told me off for having them at Melbourne customs-and they weren't hidden

I joined because my husband moved to Dubai 18 months before me and was all alone- and i was trying to find a local company who would deliver a birthday cake to him in Dubai as a surprise-couldn't believe how helpful everyone was over such a small thing

Very happy to hear there are craft and sewing shops over there. Am planning on bringing my Brother machine with me that I am very happy with. It's been superceded now, so can't really recommend it in terms of the model, but in terms of teh BRand, I have found it very reliable and easy to use with lots of accessories for quilters. Are there any commercial quilters over there to do the quilting on large quilts (my home machine would not handle a queen size quilt for example). Tossing up whether to bring my stash with me - presumably it would be a good opportunity to get rid of a lot of stuff. I'm looking forward to exploring the textile souk to see if there are any exotic materials I can do anything with. I'm not really into the traditional quilting fabrics - more contemporary stuff and exotics. Rambling now... sorry. Oh. Just saw you've bought a Bernini - congratulations. Will leave comment above in case it helps someone else. We live by the textile souk-the variety is amazing and the prices unbelievable-enjoy!

I bought the quilter's sewing machine from Carrefour-around 400 dhs and has a quater inch foot and sews well-has various accessories too. Not fancy but does the job well. There are dearer machines around but I wanted one I could use here-have a good one at home in Australia already-and leaves me more for stash building! I order most of my stash from the US as even with postage Overseas ordering is easy (too easy!) and the choice is so much wider.

Do you have children? If not I am curious why you don't look in Bur Dubai-I just love it there-we have been here 6 years and don't even need a car as my husband works near by. It is quiet-you can walk to Karama, The Creek and the markets as well as Burjuman and the metro is a short walk away. I love being by the Creek-there is always something going on and it is a lovely area for long walks when the nights get warm

Hopefully the girls are close enough to distribute the items between themselves after her death and get the last laugh on her. I feel your pain though-my brother has just made his will and as I am his executor I read it. I was horrified to see he had left shares to four of his children but nothing to his adopted-and oldest- daughter. I was delighted to be able to tell him I would be in Dubai and thus could not and would not act on his behalf.

It is an odd feeling when they finally head off without you isn't it, I couldn't jpon my husband in Dubai for nearly 2 years as our children were in their final two years of school and wanted to finish their education back home. You will have heaps of last minute things to do though and the time will pass more quickly than you think

it's just non-stop. Have been back in Brisbane three months today and it hasn't stopped raining since we arrived. The last couple of weeks have been really heavy though - apparently it's as bad, if not worse, than the 1974 floods. The only saving grace is the new dams that have been built since then, hopefully they will hold up and Brisbane city will be spared. We're pretty high up in our suburb but the ground is just so soaking and wet that I hope the houses don't start toppling over like some have up the coast. Hope it stops soon-it has been unseasonably wet down in Melbourne too-but nothing like as bad thank goodness-3 months of rain must be very hard to handle

I am home watching the footage now-the waters are still rising with more towns due to be flooded by tonight-the areas under water are immense-can't begin to imagine how the clean up will be handled once it can begin

I doubt the weight is really the issue either. You do need to take a break-i didn't get pregnant till I had officially resigned myself to not getting pregnant-if that makes sense. I know it isn't easy to focus on other things (after 7 years and well meaning friends and family asking the wrong questions!) but if you can get away and have a nice self indulgent holiday it just might help! Just try to make it a holiday where you are doing things-such as exploring rather than just focusing on relaxing to get pregnant (which could still be stressful)-you need to alter your focus.

Wow 7 years!! My 18 months is nothing compared to both of yours. Congrats!!!!! Question though - did you have any fertility issues though? I mean there is a small chance we can fall pregnant naturally but its a small chance. Still think I need to just let it go and relax and have fun for a while see what happens, even if the chance is small.... No obvious fertilty problems that tests could detect-just didn't fall pregnant-secind child was conceived less rgan a year after the first though

To Wanda and any of the others who depend on taxis, I arrived home from the UK last night to find my new (to me!) car in the driveway so I am able to pick people up from Dubai Internet City metro as necessary, or anywhere in Lakes, Springs, Meadows, of course. You run the risk of taking a scenic route to a coffee morning and possibly arriving many hours late, but it'll be an outing ;) Congratulations on the 'new' car-enjoy sxploring! Funny you should say that, how did you know it was an "Explorer"? :) Sometimes I suprise myself!!!!! Would take you up on the exploring but live down by the Creek-when you get your bearings come visit.

Wanda, I need to get myself a life of my own and stop living through my husbad, and intend to start going to EW coffee mornings this year. Shall we arrange to go to one together? We might not get on with each other, but we might meet others we get on with. I've been hesitant about going because I'm so old and fat, but what the heck, it's what's inside that matters! Happy New Year! Happy to go with you or Wanda or Simpleasabc if you want moral support-have stopped going since the coffee mornings ceased at Burjuman but now the metro is up and running haven't got an excuse not to get to the MOE ones-won't be back till the 30th but feel free to email me at glenda_aus at yahoo dot com if you want company or a cuppa after that.
