My husband initially got his done in Dubai as he hadn't been resident in Australia for 8 years. However the Saudi government insisted he go back to his home country where we got it all done again. The visa had to be applied to from Aus too and the Saudi one he got in Dubai was cancelled.. Took nearly 4 months in all for all the paperwork to go through. probably not what you wanted to hear but it can be a very frustrating process.

Not a random act of kindness I have done but worth reporting. BH has just gone to work in Riyadh and transferred all his work from the past 8 years onto a huge USB which he managed to lose while on a conference in Dubai this weekend. Needless to say none of it had yet been saved on his new work computer. Some lovely gentleman emailed him that he had found it on the roadside in Dubai, looked though it and found his email and will return it to him. BH is hugely relieved and will finally back up everything. So thankful as BH was stressed to the max to say the least.

My husband started work there today-finally after 4 months of visa complications. I probably won' be there till mid July as our daughter's first baby is due late May and I want to be home for that-and help her out afterwards if she needs it.

We're Aussies-had to go home to apply too. Been in Australia nearly 4 months now and hoping it will be approved in the next week. Part of our problem was BH held a multi visit visa from Dubai to Saudi which apparently wasn't properly cancelled in Dubai so we are twiddling our thumbs waiting for it to expire so he can re-apply. Heading to Riyadh too

Never had a problem ordering clothing from China. Just check the sizing carefully as things tend to run a little on the small side but otherwise have found the quality good and the postage very reasonable.

Which state are you looking at? Does it need to be a school where Arabic is taught? Public schools are excellent and free. There are Saturday morning schools where the children can continue to learn Arabic if that is wanted-in Victoria anyway. Also a few schools teach in English and French at the primary level. Not sure if that helps or not.

Can't comment on the autism but my son had a gastrostomy tube for 2 and a half years as a baby and he did at times play with it despite our best efforts to wrap the tube securely. His best effort was to pull the tube out entirely just as we were about to leave for a family Christmas dinner! However it was not too bad to get it reinserted at the hospital if the worst happens. This was some years ago though and I am sure they have improved the 'plumbing' of the tube by now. They didn't have buttons back then. Good luck whatever you decide-it certainly did help with wind pain.

Yep-left Dubai-now in Australia then off to Saudi For good or hols? Oh yeh, perhaps a skiing trip;) Could be for Omra or to sight-see.... Personally i like Saudi, very interesting place :) you asked for good or hols> Umra is Umra, not hols. Sight seeing....well sorry, but you are weird then. Not exactly a Thomas Cook destination. Point about Omra but you know what i meant. There are some amazing places to see in Saudi - just because it's not Costa del Sol doesn't mean you can't holiday there. Costa Del Riyadh. Sounds mighty fine. You never know! Anyway I am going with an open mind and looking forward to the adventure-if the visa is ever sorted!

Ours is on the way back with Allied Pickfords and they didn't anticipate any problems. Nothing over 8 years old though and we have all the receipts. I think it is more the type of wood that is the issue-eg pretty sure items made of bamboo are banned. Will update once it reaches us.

There is a Syrian furniture store on the ground level of Jumeirah Plaza behind the kids play area and opposite to the Second hand bookshop, I bought beatifully engraved items there a couple of months ago. it wasnt upstairs though. Saw something similar recently in Madinat Souk but am guessing it will be more expensive. Thanks so much-that must be it-the prices were better. Was hoping the ones at Mall of the Emirates would re-open but doesn't seem to be happening in a hurry

Hello Nomad thank you . Hello Wuffles thank you also, that's great news. ( Its me AKA Nobby) you sent me pictures of your beautiful quilts. Glad to help with anything. If I don't know I will try & find out . You may want to look at blue abaya & Kiwi in Saudi. Ive been following them for sometime now & love their blogs. Both great Ladies & fountains of knowledge . I ask them questions all the time . Wuffles I hope we get to meet. That thought has brought a smile to my face on a day when Im struggling. I will be reading at my big brothers funeral. So I hope arriving Wednesday & meeting all the grief head on wont knock me completely of balance. God bless Would love to meet at last. Will be thinking of you on Wednesday especially. I am sure the family will be glad to have you there in time for the funeral. Not sure when I will make it-depends on the paperwork of course but BH will be there before the end of October and will hopefully find somewhere to live before I get there! no idea whether to lok at living in or out of a compound yet- things should be clearer once he gets there-I hope.

Sorry to hear the accommodation is bad. My LSh long suffering husband was put in to a hotel on arrival. It was basic but clean. He searched high & low for an apartment before I arrived & was disappointed with standards. Obviously anything on a compound is at a premium. I went to a hotel & satyed there for a month. In which time we found a great apartment on a very small compound. Its got a small pool & small gym. Which is all we need. Its all kept clean & is relatively modern. We do have power cuts but that could be a general Saudi problem . We don't have kids with us all grown up. So that makes the transition easier( or does it ?) Ask Your husband to gently nudge the company regarding your visa. We know mine could have been completed much sooner. So now its always a case of being proactive. Don't lose heart over the accommodation .I believe you can find better its a matter of having the time to do so. I realise with kids that isn't what you want to hear. But We have been blessed to get the apartment we have now. In the hotel I felt like I was a prisoner. Im still at home returning next week. My brother died unexpectedly on Saturday so going to London Wednesday for the funeral Thursday back to Riyadh. Pity you aren't coming to Riyadh you would have a willing & able baby sitter. ( Then there isn't much to do) Anywhere you go you can mostly take your kids & I like that aspect . God bless So sorry to hear about your brother-so sad. Looks like we may be joining you soon in Riyadh and will doubtless have a hundred questions to ask.

My son studied under the Australian curriculum back home. I am assuming they follow the same one here. The one thing he liked was that there was no need to study maths which he was absolutely hopeless at so he could concentrate on humanities subjects and steer clear of the sciences. Not everyone will see this as a good thing I know but I doubt he would have made it to uni if he hadn't done it this way. Good luck whatever you decide.

Hi I always get them picked up at different times so as not to get too stressed. Can you have items to go back to aus picked up first? They will not go in the container anyway.. I would love to do that but the companies are telling us it will add substantially to the cost and as we are paying out of our own pockets we want to keep costs down

Nursed both my mum and dad through cancer so know what you are going through. Dad used to respond well to morphine till the end-set his watch and anxiously waited for the next dose-but my mum couldn't tolerate it at all. She would see imaginary people in the room on the lowest of doses and be terribly afraid. The doctors gave her a substitute-sorry have forgotten the name-which was not as effective with pain control but made things a bit more bearable. As for things to do together mum was pretty much bed ridden the last 6 months and her favourite thing was to be taken outside in a wheelchair and wheeled up and down the street to see the changing seasons. She also loved having comfort foods her mum had cooked for her in her childhood cooked for her-sometimes at 3 in the morning! Dad, who had much less time, wanted help to put everything in order and just to have company.

If the only places you have seen driving in are the UK and Singapore, you will get a pretty nasty surprise. Food, petrol and cars are all cheaper in Dubai. Dubai has better weather than Singapore roughly 6 months out of 12 Customer service is about the same. In some ways, there are even more "rules" than in Singapore, many things which are normal elsewhere are not allowed, however, you can chew gum ! No gum chewing in the Metro-200dh fine!

We had a fantastic day with the madness starting last night at our mammoth cook-in. We have 70 people through the house for Eid breakfast and there's really not much time for a rest once the cooking is finished and the house wakes up for Eid prayers. I did a different menu this year and it went down a treat, I just couldn't face cooking a whole lamb on an open gas ring in the garden so I did chicken instead. A huge amount of chicken. I actually stumbled on the recipe years ago by accident. I was trying to make something that involved chicken, spuds, onion, garlic, ginger, salt and black pepper as a one pot kind of meal. Anyway it went wrong and I was left with a dry and lumpy textured mush, kind of like crushed potato and a savoury chicken. I had no choice but to serve it up and when I gave it to my husband he said - oh how did you know, my mother used to make this for me, just tell me, how did you know? I just looked at him and said Allah Kareem. It was one of the few things I knew in Arabic and I still laugh about how I came about that chicken till now. So does the family. Anyway I had to cook todays in about 5 batches, it contained about 10 kilos of chicken and 6 sacks of spuds. We also had spinach dhal and chappati with it. There was loads of it and it was delicious and trust me when I tell you that replicating a mistake isn't easy. In fact it was so good my son took some away to work with him and its currently flying at 30,000 feet en-route to Bangkok. When he was on the way out the door my other son said I hope you can get off the ground easier than I can get off this chair. For afters we had a chocolate cake, beetroot cake, and a spicy walnut kind of cakey biscuit thing that I found in an Australian cooker book. The jury is still out on it. There was also loads of sweeties and biscuits. By half eleven everyone had gone and because I was tired I didn't go to visit my beloved sister in law, instead I arranged to see her tomorrow then I climbed into bed for a couple of hours. My husband and children all went to see the extended family, they were still at it the last time I checked but this year I just don't have it in me and I took a rain check. Its been a really great day. Feel exhausted just reading this -what a great effort!

It is strange as the RTA says the taxis will operate at 95% over the weekend: http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/eid-holidays-dubai-metro-till-2am-8-000-taxis-on-road-free-parking-2013-08-06-1.516759 They say the taxis will concentrate around malls etc. but at 5am? Yes I read that, 8000 taxi on the roads and ALL are already booked up at 5am! Local news said more taxis have been designated for the airports too
