Why once a year? We make them all year round (my husband is Palestinian). Cook the batter on one side as you do pancakes, stuff them and put syrup with a touch of rosewater just before serving. Never deep fry them. Can't see any point in buying them premade-they are idiot proof-even my son has made them himself since he was a young teenager.

Wuffles have a look here, looks like there's a free shuttle bus from Ibn Battuta to the monorail. [url=http://www.topdubaiattractions.com/palm-island/'>link[/url'> edited by Alismum on 13/07/2013 Thanks-not sure about the bit about not being able to enter the hotel though-we have wandered through the foyer for a look-see before Probably not worth the effort if that is the case-must be a few years since we last took visitors too come to think of it. A few years back when we had guests we took them all over to see the foyer, fish, ice cream place, shops, common areas etc. I think they may have become stricter now. Maybe someone else knows or give them a call

Probably Dubai Internet City metro station, but you'll need a taxi to go from there to the monorail. Thanks-any idea of the cost from there? Will be about 10aed. But taking a taxi from Internet City to the Palm will be around 20, which is cheaper than taxi+monorail. very true-just thought the monorail might appeal-will see how the budget is going-not the best time of year to have visitors who don't want to swim or do any water parks!

The monorail costs 25 dirham and there isn't really a metro close enough to the station. The new tram line is supposed to connect to it, but that's not finished by long. Where are your visitors? It might be cheaper for them to take a taxi directly from a metro station. With me in Bur Dubai-was hoping to get part way by Metro at least. Thanks

While on the topic of Abayas are any more suitable for Saudi (Riyadh)? Seem to remember somewhere that coloured embroidery was frowned upon. Hello Wuffles its me Nobby :) Im in Riyadh & the ladies have colourful embroidery & some have coloured panels in their abayas. I have to say they sound a lot cheaper there . Thanks Nobby-good to know-do you mean cheaper there or in Dubai?

We've been drinking it for the past 8 years-no issues. We do live in a building where the tanks are regularly cleaned though which no doubt makes a difference

When i was in Riyadh, the mutawa could be funny about abayas with colours and patterns. This was a decade ago so not sure if things have changed. Maybe I was reading older advice then?

I have friends is Saudi Arabia who wear abayas with embroidery. Not sure if it differs by city. But plain ones can be bought everywhere really. No worries-thanks for the information

Three Filipino ladies sheltering from the sun under umbrellas while persuading the police to put the man accompanying them into a police car and question him-intrigued to know why-the heated discussion has been going on for well over half an hour. Oddly this is happening outside the Palestinian Consulate. edited by wuffles on 08/07/2013

Burjuman Deira City Centre Mall of the Emirates Dubai Mall all link without having to go outside. Burjuman is a bit of a mess though with all the renovations going on-and the entry immediately by the metro is closed for now

I can drive but neither of us have needed a car in the eight years we have been here. We are in Bur Dubai so close to the metro and buses and a short walk to the Creek. Taxis circle the block 24/7 so no issues there either. I walk all over the place too unless it is unusually hot. Don't pre-plan- sometimes even hop on a bus just to see where it takes me!

The Creek and creekside markets-both sides crossing by abra. The strange and wonderful museums along the Bur Dubai side-including the camel one! The Bastikiya area and Meena Bazaar. Last minute bargains at Karama and a stroll round Satwa.

My two girls are 18 months apart to the day and they are now 4 and 5 and are best friends. It was really hard the first two years but we survived them and now things are much easier. There is quite an age gap between my second and third child so I think things will be much different for my third. I think small age gaps are great, if it is indeed physically possible! It must be! The brother and I are 9 months and 1 week apart-mum always wanted twins and felt this was the next best thing-talk about insane!

You used to also find these at the big supermarket on the top floor of Lamcy Plaza if you don't fancy haggling-from memory they were well priced but I haven't been there for a few months.

I applied via Esta for a holiday last December, it states they are valid for 2 years does this mean for travel to a different location in us this summer I can just access application and change destination address? Anyone done this? Yes-as long as you don't have a new passport since you first applied

We are Aussies and used it for multiple visits over the 2 years However if your passport has expired since you initially applied and has been renewed you need to reapply-costs $14. You also need to update the details of where you will be staying each time. edited by wuffles on 03/06/2013

My favourite movie was by far The Sound of Music, have been watching it once every two years or so. On TV I just adored "The Brady Bunch". Would so love to see some of those episodes again. Any of you ladies know if it's available in a DVD box or online? here you go-lots of other places you can buy it too: http://www.overstock.com/Books-Movies-Music-Games/The-Brady-Bunch-The-Complete-Series-DVD/2274327/product.html

If you want a hamper Myer and David Jones both have this service. Jones the grocer may-Google it and see. Otherwise the large supermarket chains like Coles and Safeway/Woolworths offer home delivery and will work out much cheaper. Depends how gourmet you want to go! Assume you mean Melbourne Australia-not the one in Florida. edited by wuffles on 01/06/2013

where to buy the camel bones? Younger boys in my family loved camel bone boxes and other things made from camel bone-suitably creepy apparently-otherwise the checkered head coverings (sorry the correct name is eluding me at the minute) to wear as a scarf were popular with older ones. Son in Law always requests-and gets- F1 magazines from here as well-they cover different ground to the ones back home! Any of the souvenir shops have boxes and letter openers and such made out of them-my son loves his.

Do you have a recipe for a home made crust? And would it work for what I'm trying to make? Any sweet/biscuit pastry would work but if you want a cheese cake type base why not just crush your favourite sweet biscuits and combine with melted butter to make a traditional cheesecake base-even easier than making pastry.

Out of curiosity, what else do you do with your books but read them? Use them as doorstoppers? Throw them at people? Stand on them to reach things too high for you? Decorating? Can always remember visiting a Parisian bookstore as a teenager where they sold old leather bound books by the yard so you could have your own posh vintage library at home. No choice of titles-the goal was in the look!

Once your husband has an offer you can worry about where to live. Some companies may even allocate accommodation in a particular area. Ours did. Given the traffic it is best to live close to work if at all possible. I am sure you will get more answers in the morning-it is after midnight and the weekend here.

A friend home schooled her six children for many of the reasons you mention and while she had no regrets the children who are all of university age or older do have reservations. She did an excellent job but tended to focus on subjects she was stronger in such as maths and science and the kids now feel they were directed into certain courses and careers because of the subject choices. They weren't unhappy about being home schooled although they did feel they missed out in various ways. Interestingly all of them have changed university courses, some after completing the first one, others half way through and are focusing on very different areas. You might find it interesting to talk to a few adults who have been home schooled for a different perspective.

Been here eight years and neither my husband nor I have a car so use taxis a lot. Can honestly say I have never had any problems with a taxi driver here-apart from one who got somewhat lost as it was his first day and he had just arrived in Dubai and been given no training about the roads so didn't have a clue which way to go. I don't engage them in conversation-they should be concentrating on the roads anyway-just give clear directions where I need to go and that is it. edited by wuffles on 22/05/2013

We had them on the sofas that went with the company apartment. Only thing that worked was daily vacuuming followed by applying packaging tape to every area of the sofa every day to pick up whatever was there-very tedious and went through rolls of packaging tape for a couple of weeks but it did work and saved using chemicals too.
