Are you moving back to Australia and if so would you mind giving me an idea of costs? We came over with a 40 kg moving allowance but seem to have accumulated a lot along the way! Not moving anywhere yet but need to start saving for it as the company won't pay. Thanks in advance. On second thoughts is this an attempt at stealth advertising as you haven't posted before? Anyone else had recent quotes on moving back to Australia? Thanks edited by wuffles on 19/05/2013

Nope. You can see the mall from the metro station. Just walk across the road. (Watch for cars, though!) A free shuttle bus would be nice in Summer mind you-it is a very hot walk then.

Ok, now I'm crying again for different reasons. SANDY HAS BEEN SEEN yesterday and today in the desert beside that park. Loads of gardeners are out to catch her. They said she can't escape from that area. Thank you everybody once again. I can't believe how supportive you all are. X x x x x great news-crossing everything she is home soon

Or get off at Burjuman-walk straight ahead to the Creek-crossing between the American and Saudi embassies and let them walk all the way along the creek to the souks. My visitors always enjoy going that way so they can see all the dhows and get a better view of the mosque and museums en route. much better than bank street ....... and also some nice art galleries just before the museum.... no idea what its called but has a nice cafe in it too. You mean the Bastakiya quarter-you can also climb up on the roof and the gallery building for a nice view

It may vary from state to state but here is a quote from Australia's RAA site: "The new laws have placed restrictions on front seat use in vehicles with two or more rows of seats and these must be followed: •Children under the age of four to be seated in the rear of the vehicle (where the vehicle has two or more rows of seats). •Children from the age of four to seven years, to be permitted in the front of the vehicle if all rear seats are already occupied by children up to the same age (where the vehicle has two or more rows of seats)." Children usually ride in the back in Australia anyway-can't really recall seeing many primary schoo children seated in the front at all. Mine rode in the back till they began to learn to drive! Forgot to add they must also be in age appropriate car restraints. edited by wuffles on 14/05/2013

Yes there is a Karama metro station, called Al Karama:) And the one after that is Burjuman, which lands you in Deira, near the Souq:) Burjuman Station lands you in Bur Dubai-not Deira-which is the other side of the Creek

Our friend lives in Riyadh. He is a single guy and lives in a huge compound. As I understand he pays a lot for his one bed apartment roughly 120,000 AED a year, if that gives you a bit of an idea. I know his water and electricity are massively subsidised as is fuel, all of which are much cheaper than here. Hope that helps a bit. Thanks-any ideas are welcome-think he might need a bigger housing allowance then!

You can search for your manual here: http://service.us.panasonic.com/OperMan/ I would think the detergent is added at the start -no matter which programme you select Tried looking for it on that site as well as laundry.manualsonline.com....can't find it. I have posted it on the Panasonic Middle East's Facebook page twice but they keep deleting it or something. Good luck hunting it down Anyway, the model number is NA-F70GS. If anyone can find it anywhere or has a similar machine, please let me know

If you do a search for Riyadh on this forum, you will find some recent relevant threads. There are also some good blogs that could be helpful. This is a popular one: http://susiesbigadventure.blogspot.ae/ She is in Jeddah but the information could still be useful for your friend. Thanks-we have searched every thread with Riyadh in before asking -the problem is there is no mention of housing or living costs though. Perhaps other companies arrange that rather than giving a lump sum.

Why would someone ask [i'>[i'>you[/i'>[/i'> about Saudi Arabia? Do you / Did you live there? As I said he has never been to the Middle East and I am probably the only one he knows who has.He may well be a little foggy on the geography of the area- (I know I was before I came) or have hoped there were people in Dubai who had also worked there. I don't think it was an unreasonable thing to ask. Oh I see! I thought that you had been there prior to coming here. Perhaps you could hook him up to the Saudi forum. He has been on-not much help) as I already said)-so I was trying to ask the helpful ladies on here for recent experiences there.

Must confess planes make me sleepy-always sleep all the way to Melborne and back in economy and get the flight attendants to shake me awake for meals! Never had jetlag either-just lucky I guess. Annoys me I never stay awake for the movies though. Once home I usually spend the first day doing 6 months of weeding! Hope you have a smooth flight edited by wuffles on 09/05/2013

In our house the tooth fairy used the teeth to make a fine front fence for her mushroom house. She had to leave a coin-preferably 50 cents as in Australia they are the biggest coin and an interesting shape. My two would have been most unimpressed with paper money! (you could also stock up on the older and bigger 1 dh coins (or were they 5dhs?) to make it special) edited by wuffles on 05/05/2013

Did you fly on the new Emirates 380 plane? Just back from Melbourne and find the leg room on those way better than older Emirates planes. The cabin wasn't cold either. I sleep the whole 14 hours so can't comment on the rest.

I'd go for Adelaide-much quieter and less stressful driving. No mimimum number of lessons either although you do need to keep a log of practice lessons you take with a qualified driver and do a set minimum number of hours driving during the day and night too.

Just checked (from Australia) no problems logging in to manage a booking at all-maybe try from a non UAE site? Good luck Thanks Wuffles - my manage a booking works, just the link you take to the Visa site is giving an error. Do you mind checking? I had this nightmare last month and can't believe it's repeating itself. Maybe (hopefully) it's me and I'm going mad, not the site. I tried the link for you and it worked-weird

I did when the ID cards first launched, however, I don't think they offer that service any more as they have to be collected from a post office. I have always clearly specified and reconfirmed it should be sent my local post office and not some obscure location like Deira, Al Quasis, or Karama. Has worked so far. Good Luck If you live in Bur Dubai then Deira and Karama are not obscure locations at all!!!!! Very true Wuffles, and no offence intended. None taken-I just find it amusing people forget some of us do live-happily-down the other end of Dubai!

Prefer not to give details about his job-sorry-but yes we have been happily in Dubai 7+ years now though I spend half the year in Australlia as the 'big' kids are there still. "Home' in Melbourne at the minute.

My husband's company pays the rent (it is a company owned apartment) and all bills apart from telephone/internet. He gets a very inadequate transport allowance though (we don't have a car) and minimal contribution towards school fees which we luckily don't need. We each get one economy return airfare a year booked directly through the company. No bonuses and the salary is very average but at least the outgoings are minimal.

I am not a teacher but have taken Guides on several overseas trips over the years. Our policy is that leaders need time out and we would take turns having the odd evening "off duty" No way did any of us get anything close to drunk but we did enjoy a couple of nights to a local restuarant for a nice meal and perhaps some wine. The parents were told that this would happen and nobody objected. As long as there are enough adults present to care for the young people , incuding at least one person qualified in first aid then it shouldn't be an issue. Anyone who has travelled with large groups of youngsters in any guise will understand the need for time out! Time out is one thing JoyceB-drinking is another. Taught secondary students for 30 years and would never have done so. Even if there enough teachers to take shifts (and there usually aren't) every teacher needs to be ready to take over if something goes wrong

Great points nathalie2-I can vividly remember being painfully shy as a child but of course home schooling wasn't an option way back when. One night when I was about nine I was dragged in for the regular parent teacher interview and mum, as always, started to make excuses for my being so shy. The teacher stoped her and said "She isn't shy-she is reserved". I was so proud to be given what I saw as such a grown up quality that it changed my whole perspective on things almost overnight. The power of words is amazing. Can't say I became outgoing but I did make sure when my two were younger and wanted something in the shops that they were the ones who queued up and had to ask for it. Both turned into very confident young children.

Aside from grammatical issues I am wondering if your Bachelor of Education includes a practical component. I am unsure how a correspondance course could offer the essential teaching rounds needed to become experienced. I know when I was studying to become a teacher I had three years of supervised rounds and even that was barely adequate so I worked in schools on a voluntary basis as well to consolidate my skills.

Wasn't cheap-it is a German brand-but has been going strong for 7 years so money well spent if you feel the cold

Taught secondary school for 30 years and never had the need to drink while teaching or supervising-left the much needed cuppas for morning tea and lunch breaks. Apart from the risk of spillage (I have a nasty scar on my face from a nurse spillimg boiling tea on me as a baby in hospital) I wouldn't have considered it professional to be drinking coffee while teaching.
