Gosh, I think I know where you are talking about - go there often and they never utter a word to me.. LOL, I bet its because they feel "familiar" with you (ie. you work close by and frequent it) and don't realise how offensive they are. Good for you for telling them like it is, b/c I would be annoyed as well! edited by xmasbaby on 14/06/2011

Just noted that on this years calendar, it does say Tuesday 28th June Islamic Ocassion (Isrra and Miraj) so looks like it is a holiday.

Go to the website http://www.reptondubai.org/en/admissions/academic-year-2010.html Under Admissions, Academic Calendar, there's a table displaying this years calendar. Right above that, there's a link that says "Academic Calendar 2011-2012". Click on that, and it has all the key dates for next year. Would copy it but wont let me but 14 September is the first day back.

Travelling to NYC this weekend and assume the voltage of my GHD is 220 but just wanted to check as I know some electronics are 120 to 220 (like computers, chargers etc). I've checked the plug but there's nothing there. Does anyone know whether it can be used with just an adapter? TIA

Have to say after feeling miserable yesterday seeing the scales this morning made me smile! - 2.5 kg after four days!! When I did the true weight calculations it said that I should follow the attack fase for 6 days, but am very tempted to follow it for a bit longer. Would this be a bad idea? Little bit worried about the upcoming weekend as I have a housewarming party tonight (am bringing some food that I can eat) and we're going out tomorrow evening to celebrate the birthday of two good friends. Not looking forward to an evening like that without drinking... Thankfully I won't be the only one not drinking. Just hope my friends won't think I'm pregnant! Has anyone signed up for the online programme? I am a bit reluctant to do so, but if I want to get to my true weight I will have to follow the cruise fase for 270 days and the consolidation fase for 385 days which I'm finding very daunting. Just keep telling myself to take it one day/kg at a time :) Are there any other lovely ladies on this forum who are in it for the long haul? I joined online. Had to lose 10kg and it was worth it. I really looked forward to entering my weight everyday and seeing this graph they make for you. I asked them bout doing attack longer than required and the dukan team advised against it. THey said the body readjusts and gets used to it which is why they recommend alternating. I then asked about doing 5days protein vs 5 days p/v and again they said with what I had to lose not recommended. If u join, you get the benefit of being able to ask question specific to your situation.

You're not alone! We've made tons of "acquaintences" here but truthfully, just a small number of friends. Dubai has an interesting mix of people and a lot of people spend the whole evening talking about how much money they have, things they can afford to buy now or better yet, post it in their facebook status updates to keep people apprised of where they are shopping and how much it costs. I'm an avid shopper myself but to broadcast it to everyone is just odd and quite new money, and honestly thats been my experience with other couples here. Its all a big farce. On a more positive note, however, we recently met a nice couple who we really enjoy their company and we've been here four years. We'll make an effort to spend more time with them. They are really down to earth and just fun. Crossing our fingers... I think its really hit or miss here I'm afraid but just keep meeting new people and one day you'll strike gold.

We struggled with this at first too. Now we do this, we stay at one relative on each side for a few days but keep our base at one home - we blame the kids saying its much easier that way. We make it clear that we need family time as its our holiday for the year. We plan events so when people ask what we're doing, we have plans. They are welcome to join. But most important, we plan one event for each side that includes all the family/friends that we want to see all in two days. That way, we can do our own thing or at least attempt too, after the fact. People still complain but at least we're not as stressed out.

I wont' be going there. This whole "this is Dubai" doesnt' sit well with me, particularly when it comes to my children and their safety. Theres' enough places here that do take our (mothers/fathers) concerns seriously.

My daughter is keen to go - I think I will and observe the action. You clearly have legitimate concerns that need correcting but the overwhelming message I am reading in this thread is that you do not want non western men in the cafe near your kids. Maybe MM is offended by this message and need the cafe revenue to stay afloat in the near term. I wouldnt care the colour of their skin - western or not western, I wouldnt' want single men who have no reason to be there (ie. not with their children).

I just want to point out that the Bloomingdales in Dubai is not the same as the Bloomingdales in New York. The Al Tayer retail group bought the rights to use the Bloomingdale image, name and branding, but the actual store itself is not owned by Bloomingdale, which isn't a surprise given how different the Dubai store is from the New York store. You can try contacting the New York store but I doubt they'll be able to help you in Dubai. If you bought something from the New York store, that's a different story. That may be true but in the past, I've dealt with another Al Tayer branded store and was getting no where on pair of 4000 AED shoes that broke within the first wear. My struggle went on for almost 2 months when I finally contacted the head office in Italy. Within a week the relevant person here at Al Tayer contacted me and issued me a refund. Sometimes the people in the store don't have the power but those higher up do and the international offices usually have the contacts, since its near impossible to get it here. Even if it's not NYC owned, I would still contact the GM there and see if he can help.. JMHO

Thanks for the info. Personally, I don't think random men (not those accompanying children) in a play area is appropriate. It certainly wouldn't be allowed in Canada and thats where my cultural sensibilities derive from. If the cafe were seperate (like favourite things) perhaps I would feel differently but smack dab in the play area - no thank you! I have to say, I think its odd and wont be going either.

When we drive other children, we ensure we have a carseat and would never have any children just sitting with a seat belt. Likewise, we send a carseat when someone's driving ours. Most insurance companies cover blood money (well ours does) and covers passengers so perhaps look at your policies.

depends on your company. Some companies here in the UAE, don't let you take your holidays until you've completed a year where as others let you take accrued leave or unpaid. Have a look at your contract, or the company's employee manual.

Wow. edited by xmasbaby on 29/05/2011 She would be returning the brand new pair, not the worn pair. Just getting the difference back. Ya I got that...don't agree with it though. Maybe there is some logic to the way stores operate here....

I sometimes wonder why people write stuff when they have nothing valuable to add... To the OP, just go to immigration and speak to them. When we were travelling in December, we discovered our dd's visa had expired in October. You see the company I joined in 2007 had given her a 3 year visa but when I moved jobs, I had assumed her visa was still in line with mine not realising that her original visa stood. Silly perhaps but it really wasn't a big deal. They cancelled it and issued a new visa and we didn't pay any charges. Just be honest, mistakes happen and b/c its your daughter, they'll likely be very understanding. Good luck!

Sorry you are going through this. I only say the following b/c you have asked but things do go downhill from the honeymoon phase. At this time, your fiance shouldn't be saying things to diminish your confidence but rather make you feel special, particularly b/c you've agreed to marry him! He sounds like my dad - the better my mum looks the worse he tells her she looks. Over the years, she's become a health fanatic, has lost loads of weight, and looks amazing. The first thing he said to her was "wow, you look really old now" - He's like this with us as well. He compliments other people but those of close to him, he finds fault. I've come to realise that he's insecure and lashes out and due to him being my father I have no choice but to "tolerate" it to some extent. You have a choice and personally, I don't think I could deal with mental abuse from a husband - he's supposed to be your main support in life!

You'll know the last digit if you have taken an ASOS package, signed for it *mistakenly* and have kept the clothing even though it was addressed to me. If so, note I have been advised by the post office to contact the police who will be contacting the owner of said PO Box to demand return of the goods. If you haven't had a chance to do so already, please return it to the post office or call the number that's on the shipping address (and that you filled in when you put your name on the Empost slip and then rather smartly reiterated my number). I'm sure it's all a big mistake. Thanks in advance!

Almost daily - together 9 years so not as much as some on the board but not newbies either... What I really like is its usually specific - like " oh your hair looks gorgous today" or "that dress brings out your eyes!" and the icing on the cake - he said to me the other day - "you know even in the morning with no make up on you look beautiful - makeup only enhances whats already there" - as I was fussing to get ready (put make up on) to go grocery shopping...

You cannot do a border run any longer. You'll need to get sponsorship or arrive on a pre-arranged visa. There were several cases where people were held up at the beginning due to the new rules. Good luck!

I order from them all the time. I normally pay the extra 20 quid for shipping which ensures that the delivery is tracked and that I get it within the week. I ordered a bunch of stuff in Feb where I took advantage of the free international shipping and still haven't received it. They issued me a refund just yesterday, which I thought was great considering.

I have to totally agree xmas baby!! Its just a no no....Aside from the genetic deformation that can happen....(apparently...dunno..never tried) its just wrong and disgusting and illegal (in Irl and Id imagine most western countries) and eewww....no....u just dont marry your cousins!! Yuk!! (I really do like my cousins..male and female...but not for marrying)!! :) This is hilariously ill-informed - the US (some states, not all) is the only Western country to have a ban on cousin marriage! And yes, there are raised risks of producing a child with a genetic defect in a cousin marriage, but according to recent research (basing this on the very detailed and interesting Wiki entry), it's at the same level as it is for a woman having a child at 40 or older, and I don't see anyone arguing for a ban on older mothers. Get real, guys. You may not fancy your cousins, and if you grew up close to them, they may feel like your siblings, but it's considered entirely normal in many cultures (I gather it's v. common in the ME), and if both parties are aware of the genetic risk, and can test for problems in advance, why on earth not? She asked for our views and mine is, regardless of whether I was close to a cousin or not, would NOT marry them. FYI - I am of Middle Eastern, South Asian and English background (removed in early 1800's) so no judgement on any race/culture that chooses to do it but in our family, its not normal or acceptable.

Okay..here you go.. Very close to my cousins. They live in the UK, Canada, and the US. I keep in touch via facebook, email and telephone. We do not believe in cousins marrying each other - I consider them like siblings. To be honest, cousins marrying each other groses me out to the same extent as I would view siblings marrying each other. As far as I know, its illegal in Canada.
