The Union Co-op (at Al Barsha) has huge gift baskets of fruit which are amazing. The tables will be laden with fruit and sweets for Novrose.

The Bay http://www.thebay.com/ has lots of options for wedding gifts and you can certainly get a voucher. It has stores all acoss Canada from home wear, dishes, glasswear, cutlerty, furniture, cosmetics, lingerie, clothing etc. A lot of brides register there for their bridal/baby showers. If you know where they're living, you can call up a restaurant, (if its Toronto or surrounding suburbs) and pay for a dinner for two that they can have when at home, or alternatively if he's coming here, do a dinner for two here. You can order a nice bottle of wine, if they drink and have it sent to them in Toronto - the LLBO (the liquor store in Canada) delivers or from niagara etc and they will ship. Hope those help!

Heard its definitely on track for September. Does anyone know whether they are telling parents who are on the wait list at Repton and stand no chance. Just curious as a friend was turned away from Repton due to wait list last week but then was told there were spots at Foremark and was able to register her pending their assessment. Great for us but what about parents who wont get in but have had their name on for years. Just asking out of curiousity really if anyone knows?

I have a yellow undertone and use Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Cream Compact Makeup for day wear. I apply with a stipend brush so that its very light over primer. For evenings, I use MAC. The NC colour range is for yellow undertones and the NW is for pink undertones. I've tried MUF but found it was still a little too pink even when yellow toned.

I rush home from work to eat with the kids around 6 and then when dh gets in (7ish), he eats while I chat with him or chill out watching tv. On the weekends, we eat together around at the table.

Mrs crimbles stuffing mix (Lulu's), mix in some chopped mushrooms and some chopped garlic, make in to balls and bake in a muffin tin, if you are a pork eater then you can go a step further and line each 'cup' in the muffin tin with a streaky bacon, then pop the stuffing ball inside. Yumalicious :) edited by Purple on 20/12/2012 Thank you Purple!!

Hi Xmasbaby. I also dont convert T4 to T3 so take pure T3. I get from a place in Germany. As long as you have a valid prescription they will UPS it to you directly in Dubai. Expensive but worth it. I have tried many times at various pharmacies but always been told that T3 was not available only the usual Thyroxin(T4) which for me is useless. So when it is available do you just take a script from your Dubai dr to the pharmacy at American hospital? Leave me your email if you need the details of the compounding pharmacy in Germany. Thanks - - yes basically, when doctor prescribes, I take to pharmacy in the American Hospital and have it filled. Really appreciate the support! edited by xmasbaby on 11/12/2012 edited by xmasbaby on 11/12/2012

Thanks ladies. Ya, a bit nervous to order online as it is controlled but I may have a chat with my doctor as he issued the prescription and see what he says. My issue is inability to convert T4 to T3 so the need. The pharmacist was asking about the actual pharmacy name (rather than brand name) and no where had it. Shocking! Maybe your doctor can help you. I wouldn't go thru the website below, though, looks like they sell "athletic enhancement" and botox! wha?? I can't believe this isn't really sold in this part of the world, because many thyroid issues have to do with conversion. A lot of extra t4 doesn't help that, makes things worse! Good luck and hope you get it sorted. I was able to rehab my thyroid issues naturally, but I wouldn't wish those 10 months on anyone!!! Beebers, Yes, I agree. I did a search and it looks like its steriods and the like. I am not willing to risk it being bogus or something. As for here in the UAE, they do sell it but its controlled and so only a few pharmacies carry it (normally at the hospitals). American hospital said it was re-ordered but that it would take some time. Wow thats great that you were able to naturally help your thyroid. I too, wouldn't wish it on anyone...

xmasbaby, this is so hard to find here! I was on cytomel when I moved here in 2010, but could not get it ANYwhere. A doctor switched me to levothyronine sodium, which, hello--completely different! In this part of the world, they have tiromel which is the same as cytomel, and thyroxin which I THINK is the same as t3. You may try asking for those? I don't think purchasing prescription drugs from a website is a good idea, but perhaps if your doctor worked with you on that? It's not like it's codeine, but I believe it is controlled. Thanks ladies. Ya, a bit nervous to order online as it is controlled but I may have a chat with my doctor as he issued the prescription and see what he says. My pronounciation has changed for certain words - "half" "years" "bath" sounds different. I work with a lot of brits and did have a british accent until I was about 8 so perhaps its coming back in bits and pieces and blending into my canadian accent. I now also say: bin - instead of garbage can petrol - instead of gas revise - instead of review car park - instead of parking lot leave or holiday - instead of vacation Yalla lets go....

Personally I wouldn't thank you for a kindle. My best friend had one as she had MND and was unable to hold a book so it was ideal for her. When she died in July her DH asked me if I wanted her kindle but I declined. Not because it was hers but because I much prefer the look and feel of holding a nice book in my hands. I do understand that they are light and compact etc but I still prefer the real thing :) I found with the case it works great as you feel as though you're holding a book but not as heavy. I keep my kindle in it and read it with case on. I never thought I would be a kindle lover but wow, its amazing now that I have it. http://www.amazon.com/Marware-Atlas-Kindle-Cover-Paperwhite/dp/B005HSG3L0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1353923857&sr=8-2&keywords=kindle+case

I have about 10 pairs of spectacles to dispose of, is there anywhere that they could be of use Thanks Most eye doctors have bins where you can donate and they are then re-used for people who can't afford eye-glasses. I know Atlantic Vision has a drop off where they go to charity.

I bought my mum for xmas last year and it was the best thing ever! I was worried that she wouldn't make the switch but about 10 pages into the kindle book she was a convert. Its bright enough without tiring the eyes, and the font size is adjustable. I also bought the case, so that she could hold it like a book/lie down and read etc. To help with the transition, I linked her kindle with mine and downloaded a few books for her so that it was ready to go right away. I then showed her how to use it as by the time she was done the books she was a convert and was eager to learn. Since its linked to my account, whenever she downloads, I pay for it but then we're able to share the books as you can send books to up to 10 kindles if linked. She normally downloads the free books from starting up authors and sometimes I get messages where she's now downloaded 10-20 books a pop for not a cent. It was the best gift ever!

Get foil and make a little bowl, or just get a stainless steel boil and cover with foil. Fill with unusued coffee grounds (we buy the cheapest we can find). Take a lighter/match and just light the coffee. It will smoulder and burn slowly. Put it somewhat high so that it doesn't get into the food and that keeps them abay. We had a bbq last week, with tables full of food. Burned the coffee for about 1/2 hour before we laid it out and kept it burning in surrounding area. Not a fly in sight! It was lovely though we used a lot of coffee so definitely go with the cheapest you can find.

Maybe do a lattice..... May be easy to handle strips than a sheet - also have you tried rolling between cling film or paper; tehn you could peel off the top one and do a quick splat movement.... If that makes sense well last week, I made what looked like a quilt! LOL, i just patched it together on top and laughed. It tastes great - just looks awful!Fine for home but not so much, if we have guests :) I use a pastry sheet thing, roll it ontop. Will give the paper, or cling seal a go. Thanks for the tips

We've been here 5 years and I've never given our kids (ages 2-7) deworming tablets. To be honest, none of the peds, I've seen has ever recommended it... This is very interesting. I am not keen to start loading them up with unnecessary meds but if its harmless and should be done 2x a year, surprised doctors have never mentioned. How bizarre. Thanks for the info ladies!

I've tried tons of various recipes but I just can't seem to get it right. It looks and feels right but when I start rolling, its not as elastic, or just so sticky that as I try to lift into the dish, it tears. We only use gf due to family member recently diagnosed as celiac but never had these issues when using regular flour. Does anyone have any tips as we like to bake a lot of savory pies, sweet pies, etc at home and particularly now with the holidays approaching...its a bit of a nightmare TIA

Reiss - you can get a suit for between 2000-3000 AED, or Ted Baker for about the same. All very stylish and great quality. I thought reiss only went up to size 14, and small 14 at that Oh yes, sorry, I didn't consider their sizing. I was just providing alternatives to M&S

I would like to see Obama back in office and think he did a good job considering the current state of affairs when he took office. I am concerned however, about voting ability due to recent Sandy and hope that it doesn't impede their ability to get to the voting stations as I know many are still without petrol (gas) and can't really get around. Fingers crossed that there are no upsets!

Sherryd - I have your email address now so you can remove it if you like. But I did want to say that the banana muffins are quite 'brownish' and not white so they may not work for you. DD does really like them (just baked some today) so it's a nice recipe to keep anyway. As for the sugar 'issue' it really is a personal thing I guess. Like one of the other ladies said, we all try to do the best we can for our children. I do not feel like I am denying DD anything as she has never tried sugar. She loves fruit and vegetables, home made 'sweetened' baked goodies but I just do not want to give her 'refined sugar' for as long as possible as I do believe it is terrible for all of us. My line of thinking from what I've read and my own experiences is actually the opposite - which is that babies given sugar at a really young age are more likely to develop 'cravings' or 'obsessions' for them and by not giving it at such a young age, I am hoping she will not develop as much of a taste for it. For example, I and many of my friends who were not really allowed sodas as children are still not interested in drinking them now, whereas most people I know who were allowed soda at a very young age still drink a lot of it... so again, I am not saying my way is right but it's what I feel comfortable with :) And SherryD, as I am half Indian and married into a family of chocoholics, believe me, I've heard it all - from giving DD honey to sweets to tea to everything else since she was quite young but have managed to stand my ground so far! My research supports yours. I held off giving my first refined sugars until she was about 2 1/2 and that was due to her grandma giving her ice cream. To be honest, she much prefers fruit to any candy you put infront of her. She may get excited about the thought of cakes/cookies but she generally will take a bit and then go back to the fruits. Similar to my second where we didn't wait as long (again by virtue of family intervention of sticking chocolate in her mouth!) and she similarly prefers fruit to candies. I come from a family of sweet tooths where sweet sugary treats were a huge part of our social interaction and both my dh and I would forego food for a sugary snack so I know and feel I've done the right thing for my kids.

"R is not renowned for support, from my experience it is a one size fits all education." Have to step in here. I hear this kind of comment so often and it really isn't fair. I have two kids at the junior school and they are very different and both love the place. My son is special needs (Aspergers) and I couldn't be more impressed with the efforts the school has gone to to ensure that they meet his needs. The child psychologist also said that she found Repton one of the most inclusive schools in Dubai. It's a huge place so I'm sure different families have different experiences, but I can't praise it highly enough and wanted to add balance. Have to agree as well. I actually find it comical the number of parents who slag Repton but have never been there. I once sat with a bunch of mums at an ECA who spent the entire hour berating the school - none of which ever had any experience there. As a parent who sends both my kids there, I am extremely pleased with it. They have streams to help children at different paces, the teachers are very supportive and when we've had issues we've always had excellent response from the school heads. Yes, they are known for pushing ahead academically (on the homework front) but again its at your childs pace. Sure I wish the fees were less as I am not subsidized by my work but I still prefer Repton to other less expensive schools. Food for thought - I have a friend whose child has dislexia and after numerous years at another "outstanding" school, it was recommended by various people working with the child to move them child to Repton as they felt they'd get better support. This person works at the school the child would be leaving. And finally in respect of the fees issue, we did receive notice that they had applied for an increase and that we would receive notification upon approval by the KHDA. They can't do it without their approval. We were forewarned and I started putting money aside in the event that was the case. Personally I would go and check it out yourself - I've had kids there since 2009 and we've never regreted the decision.

I think it helps when you are older and need to write essays. I learned in primary school - grade 3 (so about 8). I think its because we're still developing motor skills and so its easier. i know when I was in law school, if I didn't write cursive, there's no way I would have ever finished an exam! Same with uni.

maybe she just does it for attention - if what's she's actually saying isn't wrong, just the tone, why not try ignoring it ? I agree. My 5.5 year old DD has been a little horror lately. she is always using a rude tone or whining. I used to reply to it and get sucked in but now when she does it I just ignore her and I think she has now started to pick up that if she asks me nicely, I respond well. edited by derien on 14/10/2012 That might work, I'll give it a go. Thank you. I even blocked Disney junior (not the cartoons) but the tween station, as I noticed she was mimicing the way they were speaking, hands on the hips included! I dont remember ever speaking to my parents like that, or if I did, I can't even imagine :) Most of these American shows have these awful precocious kids who have no respect for their parents - it's not like watching a parent-child convo, it is like 2 grown adults speaking! Ugh! Even the Kardashians have no respect for their parents (altho if Kris Jenner was my mum I would probs chuck her in the swimming pool too). We also got "the look". I think mimicking / mocking / sarcasm is just as bad as rude words TBH so Derien's suggestion is a good idea. Same here, the "look". When I give dd the look, she says "mum, why are you looking at me like that? What did I do!?" agh! Of course, I then respond, defeating the entire purpose of the "Look!"

I was told many families across Dubai will be gone for the Eid break and will not be hosting a trick or treat at their homes. Am I wrong about the Ranches being quiet? I went there last year and I am hoping to take my child somewhere this year for a little fun. :) Oh, our school is closed next week so I think normal for halloween. We're in the Villa and it was awesome last year.

My dd is impeccibly behaved at school (the teachers constantly remark) and with her friends but lately at home, she's been speaking in this tone, that makes my blood boil. Based on what she's saying, the words are not actually rude but the way she says it is cheeky, to me at least. A simple yes mum, sounds all snotty - can't explain it. Everytime, we disapprove of her tone, we mention it and she starts all over but does anyone else have any suggestions. I don't want this to get out of hand as its just not appropriate. Time outs don't seem to be working...

The worst part is that they are still continuing their bullying and hating. Her facebooks memorial pages are filled with hate messages. Such a waste of young life:( I have just read some of the posts on Facebook. These abhorrent, repugnant, sickening comments... Well I'm at a loss for words. What has happened to humanity? I read a couple of the comments and promised myslef, I will not look at any of her pages again. I am too faint hearted for things of the sort:( the poor child took her own life, let her rest in peace:( Ya, its just unacceptable. Stuff like this really upsets me - when reading some of her posts, she sounded like she was really trying to stand up for herself - "I'm still here arent i?" - Its a really tragic example of bullying.
