Does anyone know if the post office is still here? Or if there is another one nearby. Don't fancy driving all the way to the one in Jumeria. Also, do they take cards? Ta x

Several other European countries "made ends meet" as you put it, doing exactly the same, so it wasn't just the UK funding their purse strings from the Colonies. As for the current Euro climate, a independant poll in the UK as come out 60% in favour of David Cameron. Why should the UK hand over its financial control of the City of London to what effectively be Merkal. It seems the Euro currency has helped bring down the financial status of Europe as all are tied into the one currency. So if one country, such as Greece needs bailing out, it's a matter ot time before they all start following as they have very limited control over their own country's finances (which is happening). This is one of the reasons the UK chose the veto choice. Afterall, DC has decided this is better for our Country and no amount of hissy fits from the Eurobrats will change this. The UK has always protected and supported the Euro, but has never intended to become part of it. It seems the UK has decided to look after its own interested for once.

And almost all of us Brits on here will have been a product of the World class British education system! ;) Personally, what I don't understand is, why you feel you have to point out your education background? What has this got to do with today's Euro economic climate? Also your comment about us being a bankrupted nation since the latter Tudor period, where do you get your facts from? Oh, sorry, the German education system...ummm. edited by Zannie on 11/12/2011

Sale! Just checked out prices from here to UK (Birmingham, the only UK destination on the sale list). Minimum price is 3500AED, that's over £600. That's what I'd expect to pay from Emirates normally. They are really overpriced compared to other airlines. edited by Zannie on 29/11/2011

Do you know what school he went to? If you do, contact the school and ask them. Was he with a parent? Sounds fishy to me TBH. I personally wouldn't have given any cash unless I was 100% certain it was going to the cause he said it was going to.

Need to cash a cheque urgently, but won't have in time to go to the bank by 3pm (unless anyone knows of a A.D Islamic bank open until teatime?). Annoyingly as the banks maybe shut Saturday and possibly Sunday, it'll be Monday at the earliest before it's cleared. Are there any other places that cash cheques (it's not a cash cheque, it's written out to me)? Also what sort of fees they charge.

It was OK. Not as good as past EW fairs as it seemed not as many stalls there. The location was good, however, we left it to around 1.30pm as imagined the parking would be a nightmare, but it was fine. Great point re the music, that would have given the place a much better atmosphere, plus I felt they need a small area set aside with tables and chairs. Got my kids some cupcakes (only served on plates, so no option but to eat them then and there), but there was nowhere to sit down. Couple of friends had stalls there and told me it wasn't that busy compared to how busy it has been in the past and obviously not taken what they would have expected to take. The ARTE Souk was held yesterday, so that may have affected the amount of people attending?

My 85 year old Dad and 77 year old mum arrived Tuesday. I took them to Festival City yesterday and mum loved it but Dad was constantly looking for a seat to rest on. I'll let you know what works and what doesn't as the next 2 weeks pan out. I'm interested to know about the 'big water taxi' Amelia spoke about and also the Abra taxi???? I've not been to the creek myself (fairly new here) do I just plug it into the satnav or is there a specific part of the creek I need to go to? Thanks I'm guessing you mean the Dubai Ferry? http://www.rta.ae/wpsv5/wps/portal/dubaiferryContent edited by Zannie on 11/11/2011

http://www.rta.ae/wpsv5/wps/portal/DNH EU disabled parking permits are not vald here and you will be issued a ticket if you park in a disabled bay. Your parent's need to get a medical report from their doctor which needs to then be attested by the UK Embassy. When they arrive they have to go in person to Deira Traffic Department, Ittihad Branch and they will Issue a Yellow Tourist Disabled Permit there and then. See the above link.

Use Prodent, they are fantastic and very reasonable. It's run and owned by a English guy called Robert. He has several guys that work for him (British and South African) and they are mobile. So, you don't need to take and leave your car at a garage, they'll come to you. They can also arrange alloys too. Robert's number is 050 659 3368 or Martyn on 050 240 2899. They have a F/book page where you can link to their website. They do work for loads of dealers here and in Abu Dhabi. We've used them several times and when I caught a ladies car door at Mall of the Emirates. They came out straight away. I highly recommend them! Just say Suzanne recommended them.

Make sure your health insurance covers maternity, birth and any complications that may occur with either yourself or your new born. Start taking Folic Acid, Pregnacare is a very good vitamin supplement if you're trying for a baby. Don't stress about losing weight, just make sure your are eating healthily and doing moderate exercise. Your weight may slowly drop anyway. Cut out any vices such as fags and booze, if this applies to you. And enjoy ;-)

I'm assuming he is a resident? He needs to get a Government Health Card from Al Badia clinic. Costs about 200AED and he'll need to take two passport pictures, passport, visa, rent lease and utility bill. Will be done there and then. He then needs to make an appointment at the clinic, then the doctor will refer him, probably to Al Rashid. He will have to pay for treatment, but will be considerably less than going to a private hospital. Alternatively, if your friends condition ends up being an emergency (as long as he has the health card)' he can go straight to Al Rashid hospital, as I think it'll be cheaper (don't quote me on that though, just going on my own experience).

Is it the same people that did it from there last year? As felt they were very overpriced compared to the sellers at Souk al Bahar and the place that used to be off Al Manara, plus not as fresh and was dead or rotting within a couple of days. Maybe just a bad batch I got, but put me right off. Out of interest, how much were the boxes and what did they contain? Maybe, I'll give them another bash.

We bought our 2 cats out with us from the UK over six years ago now (we sadly only have one cat now). I did everything from the UK end myself and was very straight forward. Firstly getting your cat's Rabies shot is the priority as you have to have the follow up blood test six weeks after the vaccination to confirm it has worked (they check the antibodies are there). Once this result has come back, and all the other regular vaccinations are up to date, then the Vet will issue a Pet Passport. Once this is done, contact DEFRA and explain where you are transporting your pet to (you can go this well in advance), they do ask for a travelling date (flight number etc.) but I hadn't booked by then, so was able to leave blank. You fill in this form and send it back (you can contact them by phone with your travel details). They then send you a new form with a section the Vet must fill in no more than 48 hours before you fly (as mentioned for the pre-travel check up). The Vet (not all Vets can do this, check your Vet is registered to sign off this form - usually at least one Vet in a practise will be able to go this) will sign off and stamp this form, and then you take form this and the Pet Passport to pet immigration (usually the cargo section of the airport), when you take them for the flight. I contacted Emirates directly and booked our cats on a flight, very straight forward. They charged by volume, not by weight. When booking they will want the dimensions of your pet carrier. So didn't need a company to do this for me. With regard to all the paperwork this end, I let Dubai Kennels and Cattery deal with it all. Was much easier to do this as I didn't have a clue. They collected the cats at Dubai airport and dealt with all the immigration paperwork etc. and we collected them from the cattery the next day. This all was a few years ago, so the UK end may have changed since. Overall, I found the whole procedure very straight forward, just give yourself plenty of time.

I would be tempted to contact the police too. These maids are clearly neglecting the children and it's also a matter of time before an accident or worse happens, especially if around a swimming pool. However, if you get the opportunity to identify the parents, I'd let them know, I certainly would if my children were being treated like this. It's tempting to film these maids as evidence, but not sure what the legal status is on this?

Good one DR! I have two young children (2 and 4 yes old) and would NEVER let them play in our communual hallway. They are noisy at times, but I wouldn't put this on my neighbours. Even when leaving our apartment, I tell them to 'keep the noise down as babies maybe sleeping etc...' and they are good 99% of the time! You are totally in your rights to complain and tell the maids to sod off! How rude sitting right on your doorstep, no way would I put up with that. It's a total breech of your privacy. The water under the door is a great idea!

Unbelievable a company can cash-in on a tragedy in this way. Not surprised you were sickened by their email. My Dad worked for a US company in London. They had offices in the towers, and lost quite a few staff as their offices where very high up, so most couldn't get out.

Funny how the OP will be concerning ppl for different reasons - for me, i'm perplexed that a 5 year old thinks a vitamin pill he is given by his mother once a day, is a sweetie that he can eat a whole packet of when he has a babysitter who he thinks has no discipline or authority... Aside of course from the obvious concern that we don't yet know if he has been checked by a medical professional... Easy to sit and judge of course - i really wish ppl wouldn't post these things...so hard not to comment lol Some vitamin pills do look and taste like sweeties. Boots chemist sell vitamins in the shape of Gummy Bears and I give my kids Bassetts mulitivitamins, which look like little orange jelly sweets. The main issue here is the babysitter MUST have realised these were vitamins, whether or not they look like sweets, the boxes are clearly obvious as to what they are.

Your water pressure maybe low. We had the same problem with our washing machine. It turned out to be the water pressure being too low and not a problem with the machine at all. Maintenance fixed the pressure issue and W/M working perfectly now. As for the dishwasher, i'd check the rinse aid, salt and give the filter a good clean.

We'd just got back from our Honeymoon. I turned on the TV (hadn't heard any news prior to that) and saw the news, only one plane had hit at that time. Only to watch live in disbelief the second plane hit the other tower. We sat at home and watched the whole event unfold on TV for the rest of the day.

I would have thought the reason more expats return from Dubai is because in Dubai they are just that - expats, not emigrants. For the majority of people, English or otherwise, Dubai is not and cannot become a permanent residence by virtue of visa regulations, whereas other popular UK expat destinations - the EU or US or Australia do have mechanisms in place to allow people to settle permanently. Can't see why anyone would take issue with the original piece, it just states fairly obvious and bland facts. Didn't see anything "whiney" or negative about it. Exactly was I was thinking! Just looking at all the posts before I posted and you've explained it better than I could :-)
