How to prevent hair fall

On an average, a woman loses 50-150 strands of hair in a single day. It works like this – 90% of your hair, at any given time, is in the growing phase – the remaining 10% falls out. You can determine if your hair fall is normal by taking about 60 strands of hair in your hand and running your fingers through them. If 5-8 strands fall – your hair fall is normal. However, if more than 15 strands fall - it means more than 10% of your hair is falling out. Here are some tips that can help prevent hair fall:

1. Stop damaging your hair

Putting your hair through the heat of hair straighteners, blow-driers, curling irons and dyeing it frequently (especially harmful if you use bleach) can cause a lot of damage and fall out. Opt for ammonia free hair colour and always use a heat protectant spray before styling.

2. Consume a diet rich in biotin

A deficiency of biotin is known to cause hair fall. Combat this by consuming a biotin rich diet. Eggs, almonds, nuts, legumes, mushrooms, avocados, blueberries, bananas, beef, whole grains and milk are sources of biotin.

3. Try home remedies

Fenugreek seeds, aloe vera, coconut milk, coconut oil, eggs, and apple cider vinegar are all ingredients that are easily accessible and help prevent hair fall when applied to the scalp.

4. Check your meds

Often times a new medication can cause hair fall as a side effect. This is particularly true in the case of antidepressants and anticoagulants.

5. Manage your stress

Stress is one of the leading causes of excessive hair fall. Manage your stress levels by maintaining work-life balance, getting enough sleep and eating right.

6. Get tested for hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism

If your thyroid hormones are out of balance, it can cause your hair to fall at an alarming rate. The hair fall returns to a normal amount once the thyroid disorder is treated.

7. Get tested for PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)

PCOS can happen due to a hormonal imbalance or an unhealthy lifestyle. PCOS affects your menstrual cycle and causes hair fall. Even though PCOS is not curable, it can be managed.

8. Choose the right shampoo

Shampoos with parabens and sulphates damage your hair and cause fall out. Try to pick a shampoo with as many natural ingredients as possible.

9. Get a head massage

Getting a weekly/bi-weekly hot oil massage is not just relaxing, it is also a great way to boost circulation in the scalp.

10. Don’t pull your hair too tight

Tying your hair in a tight ponytail or braiding your hair too tightly, especially when done every day, can also affect how much of your hair falls out.
