This weekend American football fans will descend on Atlanta for the Super Bowl. This is more than just a sports game, it’s a massive cultural event in the US.

This year, the New England Patriots will come up against the Los Angeles Rams, with Maroon 5 taking the top slot at the half-time show.

It’s the third time Atlanta is hosting the Super Bowl, and it promises to be a good one. Even if you’re not there for the spectacle or frankly don’t care much for American football, it’s still a vibrant city that is well worth checking out.

Here’s what you should do if you find yourself in the capital of Georgia…

Birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr, Atlanta is a city steeped in history. To make the most of this, start at the Atlanta History Center. This varied museum covers everything from the American Civil War to Southern folk art, and is a great insight into the history of the city.

If you want to learn more about Atlanta’s most famous resident and the country’s struggle for civil rights, go to the Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site and then do some more learning at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. If you want a change of gear, it’s worth noting the National Center is right next to the World of Coca-Cola…

Even though New York and LA constantly battle it out to decide who’s the real home of hip hop, Atlanta’s influence shouldn’t be downplayed. The city has a huge hip hop and rap scene, with Outkast, T.I. and Gucci Mane all proud of their Southern roots.

In fact, Big Boi of Outkast fame will be representing his city at the half-time show at the Super Bowl. If you don’t exactly have front row seats to their performance there are plenty of other places to soak up some hip hop, rap and trap music – like the MJQ Concourse, Club Crucial or 529.

If hip hop isn’t your scene, swing by Northside Tavern for some blues music instead.

To Walk…

Atlanta is quite a sprawling city, but this doesn’t mean it’s lacking in natural beauty. In the Midtown area, Piedmont Park is 211-acre space of greenery in the centre of town.

There’s a burgeoning craft beer scene in Atlanta, so you should definitely take advantage of that. There are lots of great craft breweries, including the New Realm Brewing Company and Monday Night Brewing.

You’re in Atlanta, so some good Southern BBQ is where it’s at. We’re not going to be foolish and claim we know hands-down the best spot – that would almost certainly cause uproar – but it’s widely acknowledged that Daddy D’z is pretty darn good.

Other good options include B’s Crackling Barbeque and Fox Bros.
