Don't think there is one at Emirates Golf Club this year. There is one at Arabian Ranches Golf Club though, on Friday the 1st Nov. It is being organsied by the JESS Ranches Parents Group. It is open to everyone not just JESS families. I think there are still some tickets left. Call one of the organisers, Gilly for more details or to buy tickets, 0508543631. HTH

We installed an Ikea kitchen two years ago. I am really, really pleased with it. Two tips, when you are in Ikea ask who is their best kitchen designer and go when you know he/she is working and try to make sure it is a quiet time, weekday morning. Secondly our Ikea kitchen designer advised us to ask for particular Ikea installers, from memory we had Vinod, he was excellent, it was completed in four days and our kitchen is really big. Good luck

Have you called the passport people? I have always found them very helpful. you pay for the call, you have to give cc details, but it is not expensive.

I recommend a man called Basel, (055 9201873). He was originally recommended to me through this forum, (do a search). He comes to your house with lots of sample books and you can choose the fabric i thought his prices were very competitive and his work was of a high standard. I have also used Azores in Satwa. Their work is also of a high standard, though I think there price have incresased a lot in recent years. And you have to keep on top of them to complete and of course you have to go to Satwa.

We used Nordic Homeworx. Not the cheapest but very professional and work was competed to a very high spec, I am delighted with my new wooden floors. www.nordichomeworx.com

For a sash I bought some tartan in satwa and got one of the tailors to hem it and used a brooch to make it into a sash, I wear it for International Days at school. If you are thinking about a Scottish themed outfit for the Caledonian's Society, Cheiftan's Ball next week most women will not wear a scottish themed outfit or a sash, a lot of the men will be in kilts but the women will be in cocktail dresses and long dresses. Hope this helps.

Hi, We've just installed a (big) ikea kitchen in out villa. We live in Al Mahra, so quite close to Al Reem, I cannot rate ikea highly enough, we used contractors (Jumeirah Carpentry, - very good) to extend our kitchen, a handyman, called Ivan and his team to clear out our old kitchen and to do the electrics and plumbing that Ikea won't do. If you want more info about our kitchen and more information about the people in ikea who do a good job, i.e. we were advised about which kitchen designer to ask for, who in turn told us which installers to request, please let me know. If you'd like to see my "ikea" kitchen you are welcome to pop round. Hope this helps

Amy I was in the exact same position as you, I had an du mailme account that stopped working on my iphone and ipad. I'm quite "techy" and spent ages researching the problem and talking to du and etisalat, (mailme is from du but my ipad and iphone 3g account was with etisalat) Anyway the upshot was I gave up on my mailme account and created a gmail account, best thing I ever did, (yes it was a bit irritating for the first few weeks having to switch all my accounts over to gmail (amazon, Facebook, twitter etc) but it is the best thing I ever did. Gmail is far far superior to mailme. I now advise all of my friends who are using smartphones, ipads etc to get a gmail account. edited by Floss SJ on 07/01/2012 edited by Floss SJ on 07/01/2012

This happened to me last week I had some miles expiring but I didn't want to buy flights, so I spent the expiring miles on emirates high street, I bought speakers for my ipad, so at least i got something for my miles.

Open the movie in Quicktime and click on file - save as and select format "ipod" or "iphone". It will automatically convert to M4V which is suitable for ipad. Open itunes and then add the selected file to library. When you sync your device the movies will update to your ipad. Does this work if the movie is on a DVD?

Hi Pilotsprincess, Its my understanding that ripping DVDs is difficult to do, a few years ago I tried to research how to do it, I also have a mac, and there are programs that you can download which allow you to rip/copy dvds but it was all quite complicated so I gave up. I found the easiest thing was to download all of our favourite movies, even though we already had them on DVD and then transfer them to our ipads/ipods /iphones. If you need more information about this let me know.

Hi 2B Free, I was considering doing this course , starting in Oct 2010. I spoke to Annie Crookes, she was very informative and the course looked really interesting. I decided in the end not to do the course only because the timings didn't suit me. Lectures/tutorials were 2 - 3 evenings a week right in the middle of my children's dinner/ bath/bedtime time. I have three little ones and didn't feel I could leave them at that time. Instead I signed on to do a masters in psychology distance learning, from the UK. I'm loving this and of course I can study at a time to fit my timetable. At first I thought I'd be unable to cope with the isolation of distance learning but I haven't found that a problem at all, its all online now and the forums are a great support. Good luck with your decision.

Mrs T, thank you for taking the time to reply, but oh dear that doesn't sound too hopeful, does anyone else have any other input? The reason why we are thinking of Kalba is that one of our party has had to send off his passport for renewal so we can't go through any border patrols. The original plan was to go into the wadis but that would mean going through the oman border control at Al Ain. So that's why we are thinking about camping at Kalba, anyone else have any thoughts? edited by Floss SJ on 22/03/2011

I thought it was a very poor interview. I'm sure there are many more interesting questions that could have been asked. i got the impression that the questions had to be approved by BG. Come on expat Woman, you can do better than this.

My husband has changed a few of our light switches to dimmer ones, it seemed to be quite easy, though I know that if the bulb is controlled by 2 switches then it becomes more difficult. In situations like this my husband disabled one switch and put the dimmer onto the other. Hope this makes sense, shout if you need more info.

I'm in Val d'Isere at the moment ski ing and although there is snow at the moment, it hasn't snowed in 3 weeks and the chalet girl today was saying it's been forecast that there will be no snow in the next month either. As I said there is snow at the moment but its getting a bit icy but the sunny skies make up for it! I agree with the other posters if you want to ski in April just choose the highest resort and hope for the best.

Quite a lot of bikes at The Outlet Mall. Alternatively what about a second hand one, I bought mine second hand after seeing advertised on the noticeboard at Le Marche. You could post a wanted add here in the classified section.

Hi Sapphire, I christened my youngest exactly 2 years ago at St Francis of Assisi in Jebel Ali. My husband had I had to attend a (long) class with the priest and lots of other parents to get a certificate which would then allow us to get our son baptised. No one asked the religion of the god parents, one of ours was not a catholic. We requested a private baptism ceremony on a Saturday afternoon, it was lovely but different from the baptisms of our other 2 children which took place in the UK. If you want more info post your email address and I can contact you off the forum, I can be more direct (truthful?) that way. edited by Floss SJ on 24/01/2011
