Hi, we have just booked ot come out on the 19th Nov for a look around and to try and sort out accomodation. With rental we can't 'choose' somewhere until a few weeks before we move as they won't hold places. Our plan is to go to West Bay Lagoon and just ask them there what is free. We will probably also arrange to go out with some estate agents. Good Luck !

Oh no ! I am so spoilt with school lunches right now. I am so bad at order and routine this is going to be such hard work for me when I arrive ! Silly question but I assume there is no form of refrigeration at school, that their food just sits in their lunch box all day ?

Gina, Sophie, Thanks for this, really helpful. Looks like shorts my son wears now will be the same (good old M&S) and everything else I can get from the shop. Like their current school here, there are a few things on the uniform list that they don't actually wear ! We're planning to come saturday to tues for our visit so can get to the shop whilst we're there. Am spoilt with lunch at school here so will have to get used to the whole packed lunch thing as well as the early morning's ... Is there a nursery that alot of DESS parents use or does it vary ? I also have a near 3 yr old to select somewhere for... Thx Alex xx

Hijacking your post here Sophie, but what year(s) have you got children in DESS ? Mine start in Jan and although planning a trip in November, it would be great to have a few questions answered ....:)

That's shocking ! My motto has always been 'look after the people who look after you'. Especially if you are entrusting someone to care for your children. Share the wealth....

Am moving to Qatar in January and am a Personal Trainer. Fundamentally the key to losing weight is 'Move more, eat less' ! but you need to find a way to make permanant changes rather than temporary dieting else it just goes back on :-) Getting a support group of any kind together and kick starting your new routine / eating habits with something like a 'bootcamp' are both great ways to get yourselves on the right track. I am very happy to provide any more specific advice and answer questions that anyone has ...

Am pondering the sense of bringing our trampoline out to Qatar. I suspect it would be too hot for it outside but am I wrong ? Is it something that lots of families have or not ?

Naokal - we have paid for next term i.e. september start in order to secure our places. We may arrive at some point during this term but are likely to start in January. We are also British passport holders and went on the waiting list a long time ago as soon as we knew Doha was a possibility ! DESS told us that you go on the waiting list and that priority is given the UK passport holders. If one of your children gets a place then sblings will get priority. This happened with us as our daughter gained a place and only a couple of weeks ago a place opened up for our son.

Thank-you all for your help ! Disa1975 - sounds like we are in a pretty similar situation. We're not quite sure when my husband will actually start - the latest being December. I am therefore not coming with the kids until after xmas regardless. We have had to pay DESS for the first term despite not starting until Jan in order to secure their places. I am quite sure that they will settle in very quickly despite starting part way through the year. Children are soooooo adaptable ! I had hoped to stay in the UK for New Years eve and then head out but I think arriving on the 1st / 2nd Jan with 3 kids in tow, 2 of which have to go to school on the 3rd is pushing it, even by my 'it'll be fine' standards !

I'm trying to be very organised and find out about after school clubs before we arrive. My daughter (7) and son (5) are starting at DESS in January. They currently do dancing, swimming, tennis, riding, football and rainbows / brownies between them and are keen to carry on ! What are the after school activities like at DESS and is it worth going elsewhere for some things like tennis or baseball ?

All - thank-you so much for the advice as it will be so much easier if I stock up on things and ship them from the start rather than packing suitcases full each time I come home ! Baffled - my mother was a home ec teacher and so I bizzarely have a large supply of rice paper in my house which I will definitely now put in ! I shall increase my shoe collection before I arrive as I am a UK 9 so it is hard enough here ! I will also bring a large collection of cards and books. We fortunately have some friends in Dubai and so it sounds like regular visits to them might be in order. We also plan to come home every summer but as I said, much easier to stock up and ship things over to start with. My DS has just turned 5 and he and his Dad are rugby fans so the Rugby club will be on our list. I currently run the extra curricular swimming at my childrens school here so I plan to get involved with some swimming as well if I can. We don't have a school for him yet but our eldest has got a place at DESS. Will also get on to all the techie stuff so we are all prepared ! Thank you again for all your advice and help. Hopefully I'll meet some of you once we get there ...

FrizzyBusy - I'm 5ft 11" so not so worried about petitie clothing but may have the same problem at the other end of the scale ! We are a family of bookworms so I'll definitely do a big Amazon order and Phoenix (cards) order before we pack. Sounds like a chocolate supply may help me find some new friends when we arrive as well ! Keep sending the advice :-)

We're getting organised to move over from the UK and I wanted to ask everyone what they miss the most from home that you can't get in Doha. I figure I may as well fill up our container with those hard to find items. So what foods do you miss and what household items or childrens clothes / toys so you find hard to get hold of in Doha. My children love shreddies and baked beans ! and I thought I might as well bring suntan lotion, UV clothing etc if it is cheaper here in the UK. I also wondered about things like scented candles ? Any requests ?!

When is the work in West Bay due to finish ? This is the area we are thinking of living when we move out later this year. Is this a problem all over or just in some area's ? Thanks

Hi, Are there any fellow coeliac's out there ? I wanted to know how well food is labelled in the supermarkets as to gluten content. I've seen there are some places that sell specialist gluten free food but how much is there and is it any good ? I generally avoid gluten free bread and cakes as I don't think they are any good but I do get some great gluten free pasta here.

Thank you all for this ! Sounds like we need to try and live pretty close to the school etc to get that alarm set as late as possible. It always seems to take forever to get my three ready to get out the door in the morning ! At least there will be no need to put coats, hats and gloves on in the winter just have to get used to putting sunscreen on instead. Also is most of the accomodation rented furnished or unfurnished ? Did you all bring your furniture with you ? Thanks:)
