Hi, We had a car run into us a few weeks ago and I was going to wait until summer when I don't need the car for school rms to put it on to be fixed but I was just wondering if we had a specific time frame in which it had to be fixed by and do we get a courtesy car? Our car is a 2012 Honda Pilot if that helps. Many thanks

I got the babyliss big volume brush from the UK, I find it really good once you get used to it, look at the video tutorials on youtube. I have GHD's and couldn't live without them. Good luck.

Hi, We have been in AKG for a month now, my son (3yrs) got into Doha British school, it's so easy to get to (5-10 min) and the facilities are fantastic. Park House (10-15 min) and Doha College an the American school are also nearby (20 mins). Schools are hard to get into you need to apply to lots and take what comes up, then move later on if you want to. A lot charge application fees Doha college is 200 riyals Park House is 200 riyals, Doha British school doesn't charge to apply nor does Doha English speaking school DESS (must hold a British passport). DESS and Sherborne are 30-40 min drive an Sherbourne and the American school is 500 riyals to apply. The year runs the same as the UK so sep-June. The compound is friendly, has a gym, coffee shop, 3 play parks (1 indoors), Qatar airways dry cleaners (qr pilots get uniform dry cleaned there for free), swimming pools and is a mixed bag of nationalities. There is a coffee morning every Tue at the costa coffee shop at 930. I hope that helps and look forward to seeing you soon.

Wow thank you all so much for your advice and support! I want to continue breastfeeding for a few reasons, weight loss, best for baby and it's free and ready on demand! I just get so annoyed when it doesn't go right or so I'm being told so by the dr, formula is a lot easier as its cut and dry! I've taken the dummy away from him since going to the dr's to see if maybe he is hungrier and he has been feeding round the clock it seems. I then stated getting some sharp pain in my right breast when he was feeding. Yesterday he fed every 3 hrs (his demand) today it seems 2 hourly, he sucks on his fists after too, indicating he would like more so I think I need to up my supply, which I plan to do by just feeding him when he wants it and for how long he wants it. It's just quite draining doing so and I have a 3 year old to run around after too, doubly draining. I'm just socking to water for now too so will see if that helps and then if he still isn't putting on weight I think. Will switch to formula, at the end of the day he has had 3 myths worth and I've to do what's best for him, so fingers crossed for me that it works :). I have the correct chart (uk red book) he has dropped from 9th to 2nd percentile, we shall see how it goes. Thanks again.

Thank for your post, it's school not nursery. Yes I am going to allow 15 min to get to car and in car seats, we too are in an apartment. I think the challenge will be getting the baby into routine, son already wakes at 6 since we got here for some reason so just have to make sure he cooperates with getting ready, brushing teeth etc. I'm sure it will work somehow. Thanks again

Hi, There is a coffee morning every Tues on Ain Khalid Gate at Costa which is good. Kids are welcome too. I have a 3 yr old son Ethan and a 12 week old son Harvey. Everyone on the compound is really friendly and easy going, we have spend most of our time by the pool lately. There is a toddler group in the indoor play ground on Mondays at 930 and a baby club on Wed upstairs sara street clubhouse from 1030. I am always happy to meet up just let me know when and where. I have my 3 year old staring school 2 Jan which will free me up a bit as he is not one to sit still while I enjoy a coffee :) Hope to meet soon. Kel

My husband has his residence visa and was sorting mine and the kids out, took all the documents to be certified only to be told we have to visit the British and Aus embassy's to get an authentication stamp on them and them bring them back, so husband went to embassy's to be told have to snd original to the country (UK) for certifying then bring to embassy to certify the stamp is legate to then put a stamp on to them send it all off to be approved! What's a palava, time and money consuming. Is this standard, anyway around it? Tourist visa expires on 3 jan and have my sisters wedding in Aus early Feb! Also trying to get son into school which have told me so long as the application is in its fine for son t start school in jan, don't wish to lose registration fees and application fees to schools when he can't go! Is there anyway to speed up the process, how long does it usually take? Thanks edited by Kelbucko on 19/12/2011

Hi, So we hired a van to ship our stuff to Doha, my husband has a job with QR airways, flies out tomorrow. I called QR airways cargo at Manchester airport to find out where he drops the boxes off, if there is anyone to help and what he needs to bring etc, to be told we go through sdv, they emailed all the details so I called them. They are based in London (we are in Manchester a 4 hour drive away), they don't accept drop offs at Manchester airport as cargo doesn't fly out of there! All news to my flabergasted husband who is now thinking ****! Why weren't we told/given clear instructions as to what to do. So he has gotten up at the crack of dawn to collect and pay for a van we don't need on our last day together for a few weeks! He is not happy Jan! It's going to cost £79 for someone to come collect the boxes and take them to London to freight to Doha plus the customs fee, is the pick up fee reimbursable? Has anyone had the same situation and is this common practise for how the airline is run on a day to day basis?

Thanks for all the information, only problem is getting a school to do the placements at. Doha college seems to be the only one willing to help but already has 2 students lined up for 2012.

It's a Postgraduate certificate in education (distance learning) through Sunderland university, applications are taken in January, you need to find a school to do the placements at though. it doesn't give you QTS status which you need to teach in the UK but you can get this through doing a term at a school in the UK if you ever need it. I emailed Doha College regarding my son going there and asked about work placement and the head of Secondary told me about Sunderland universities course. I have emailed the local schools directly to ask if I could do the placements there with no luck so far.

Thank you for your post, I have gotten onto Sunderland university through Doha college school, just need to find a school not too far away from ain khalid gate and that has placements available. Thanks finally getting somewhere. Does anyone have an indication of primary school teacher wages in Qatar, I will be sponsored by my husband through his work so will have a residents visa.

Thank you for your reply, I would prefer one based in the UK if I need to do some training as have a base there, will have to make a few calls and see what I can combine to get a Western qualification whilst living in Qatar!

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help, I am looking at doing a postgraduate in education to learn to teach at primary or secondary level. Are there any facilities in Doha offering the training, I am also interested in long distance courses as have kids. I have a Bachelor of Communications in Advertising and Public Relations, I need to find out if this is useful for getting into teaching English at secondary level otherwise a subject brush up course is needed first. Many thanks in advance for any advice. Kelly

Appologies if this has been covered. My husband is taking a post with QR in mid Nov, myself my son (3) and our new born will follow Dec sometime once visas are all sorted and term finishes. We are keen to put our 3 yr old in a preschool linked to a school he will go into when 4, I've rea this on the schools link: Schools which have pre-schools are Doha English Speaking School, Doha College, and Park House I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to any of them being better over the others and how long it takes for an application to go through? We will most probably be living in the ain klahid gate compound so one not too far would also be am advantage. I am going to have to get my husband to view them and pick one otherwise it could take forever to get him not one and he is used to going now. Any further advice is greatly appreciated. Kel

Amy, living in uk at mo might have to check a course out if I can fit it in. Due to give birth early oct, will prob move over mid dec at this stage. Kiwispiers, I've heard of dohamums so will definitely check that one out thanks. Brightside, we link didn't work for me for some reason will try again, I am happy with 3/4 pants and tshirts/polo tops so that's fine with me. I think it's a case of get over there get settled and organise it all from there but thanks so much for all your advice it helps to get an idea of what its like having never been myself. Kel
