Look on the MRCH website and find the doctor that you think would be useful. Then Google him/her and the chances are they have their own private practice. Dr Dickson works for BMI Healthcare. You'll find their email address/contact details and just give them a call. We see Dr Dickson for consultations at a private hospital in Manchester called Spire but for her tests and treatment, he just arranges for us to go to the Children's Hospital. It is not a problem at all and the doctor will arrange all the appointments for you - you just turn up! I cannot praise that place enough - it was absolutely amazing!! They had play specialists to occupy her whilst she was being prodded with needles. Peppa *** playing on the tv whilst she had her scans. Huge fish tanks everywhere to keep them entertained and magicians in the waiting rooms - truly incredible! The staff are brilliant and understand that children have different needs as patients.

Hi Bella UK I'm sorry to hear that and i will keep my fingers crossed that everything works out ok. I think in your case you would be best going to the UK. If you are from the North of the UK I can high,y recommend Dr Alan Dickson who works out of the Manchester Royal Childrens Hospital. He is brilliant and certainly knows his stuff. My DD has reflux in her left kidney so nothing too serious but enough to have made her really poorly. The one thing I liked with Dr Dickson is that he always believes surgical intervention is a last resort and I'm not always sure that the same goes for doctors over here. Good luck!

My daughter saw Dr Jhouni one of the times she was in hospital. They brought him in to confirm something. He was very nice and he is very experienced but I think he is now semi retired? Have they told you what the problem might be? My DD has so far escaped surgery but takes daily anti biotics.

My DD sees Dr Sridhar at American Hospital or Dr Rim in the Urgent Care Clinic there. She has had an ongoing problem with urology/kidney since birth and although they are general Paediatricians, they have treated her brilliantly. We see a specialist in the UK who says that they clearly know what they are doing and on the 4 occasions that she has been hospitalised, they have done everything that our specialist would have done. Both have a very gentle and caring manner and we completely trust them both. I have also heard that there is now a specialist working out of Healthbay Polyclinic but have not personally encounered him.

My DD loves being with other little ones and a few of her friends have recently moved off the Palm. As for Asya's don't worry about them being cuddled. My little one is a real softie and loves her hugs. She gets all the attention she needs at the nursery and I'm so happy with it that I'm thinking of putting her in for an extra day. Whenever we pick her up, she says goodbye to her teacher, tells her she loves her and gives her a big kiss! There's no way she would do that if she wasn't happy there. It's just sooooooo expensive!!!

Hi JPS1. My DD doesn't always nap now to be honest so I give her lunch at 12:00 as normal and drop her off at the nursery at about 1:00pm. Then I pick her up about 5:00 (ish) and give her dinner when we get home. She takes snacks with her and I think they eat them at around 3:00. 4 hours there is perfect for her and ample time to play with the others and do whatever activities they are doing. She came home covered in paint the other day and was very excited having painted dinosaurs all afternoon! Whereabouts on the Palm are you?

You are correct - FS1 means that the child starts in the September after their 3rd birthday and be careful because some schools don't actually start until FS2 (like Jebel Ali). As for Asya's, my DD who is 2 years old goes for two afternoon sessions a week. She is really happy there and so far I have been pretty happy too. I think the afternoon sessions are more like a playgroup and they don't do too much structured learning but I'm happy with that because I want to her to learn through play at this age. It's not cheap either!

We saw a Paediatric Urologist last summer with our DD. His name is Alan Dickson and he works out of the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital as well as some of the other private Manchester hospitals. He has done work with Great Ormond Street as well and is very highly regarded in his field. We are lucky to have international private healthcare but I don't think he charges for a fortune for his initial consultation. We ended up going to the Children's Hospital A&E department a few times whilst we were home last year and they did not charge us once, even though we offered and told them that we were not entitled to free NHS care. Our DD has ongoing treatment in Dubai and he confirmed that they are doing everything correctly which was comforting. I'm not sure who you see over here but Dr Jhouni was brought in as a consultant to our normal doctor at the American hospital and was also very helpful. I can also recommend Dr Sridhar at the American Hospital who has recently taken over the treatment for her - he also seems to be very knowledgeable and very thorough! edited by Dubai Blue Moon on 22/01/2013

We used to have both Dr Dardari and Dr Sanchita and were devastated when they left. Our little one has a problem with her kidney and they treated her brilliantly. We heard that Dr Sanchita had gone to AD and Dr Dardari has gone to set up the Paeds department at the new Al Zahra Hospital in Al Barsha. However, I also have to recommend the new doctor at AH, Dr Sridhar. He is amazing and very knowledgeable. He has a fantastic manner with children and takes time to go over their previous notes.

We live in a 3 bed ground floor on Shoreline (left side) and we love it! It's very quiet and we have a lovely view over the gardens. Apart from some of the boy racers who drive up and down late at night at the weekend we don't get disturbed at all. I think it depends which building and who lives above you - maybe we are just lucky?

What about Senses in Umm Suqeim? I bet they would be very grateful of toys, especially for the little orphans. I know they take monetary donations and I'd be surprised if they wouldn't accept other donations as well.

Packages obviously vary a great deal from school to school and it will also depend on whether they are a local school or a British/American curriculum school. However, there are not many schools in Dubai that don't give a married allowance and most decent schools will pay for at least one child. If this was all agreed before he signed the contract then there is not a great deal that he can do but it certainly sounds like he has got a bad deal!

Ours took 3 weeks to come through but I think it just depends on how busy they are. A friend of ours had it back within 2 weeks and another had to wait the full 6 weeks.

I bought the Stokke and love it! I bought the bassinet which was great because DD was perfectly flat and comfortable to sleep in for long periods of time (I used it as a moses basket as well). We also bought a Maxi Cosi car seat which was very easy to put on and off the frame of the Stokke and not too heavy! Then when she was older we moved her to the stroller and again it was brilliant because she was able to see clearly, being that little bit higher up. We even found that we could use it almost as a high chair in cafes and restaurants. It is VERY expensive but we bought ours in the UK and had it shipped over which saved us over 3000AED. If you can afford it, buy it - you won't regret it but if you don't want so spend that much money (and I wouldn't blame you) then there are plenty of good prams out there!

I can also recommend Cells4life! I like the fact that they constantly keep in touch with us and let us know of any developments via email. The were easy and professional to deal with and price was very reasonable compared to the other companies.

Probably a bit obvious but have you looked at Asya's on the Palm? It's in one of the Shoreline Apartment buildings. My DD has recently started there for a couple of sessions a week and she has settled relatively quickly. I don't think it is quite as good as some of the other nurseries in Dubai and it is certainly not the cheapest but it would be convenient.

I had my DD at the American Hospital and cannot criticise them for anything! All staff were fantastic from start to finish and I would not hesitate to have another one there. The lactation consultant was sometimes a little forceful but her intentions were good and she was very helpful. Good luck with your choice!

My DD has to go and see a paed regularly as well. We see either Dr Sanchita or Dr Dardari at American Hospital and love them both. They have a very calming nature with my little one but are straight to the point with us, which is what we like. Both female and trained in the UK and America. I have recommended them to several friends with babies and they have all decided to continue seeing them. We have also found that if she needs to be admitted it is better because one of them is usually on call so no hanging around for an 'outside' doctor to appear. Good luck!

I never said that there was anything wrong with tutoring a child, I said you shouldn't tutor them to get in to a school that they are not capable of getting in without it. Believe me, I see it every day. Students who can't keep up in class, students who have to constantly have tutoring to maintain a decent standard, homework that comes back and has obviously been done by a tutor and then students who are tired and withdrawn because they are trying to be someone that they are not. It makes life difficult for the students and very difficult for the teachers because they are the ones who have to tell Parents that there child is not achieving the grades that the rest of the class are. Just let your child have a go and if they get in, brilliant and if they don't send them to a school where they will be able to work at a pace and level that suits them. As for Bolt, it was his natural ability that started him off and then he practiced to maintain and improve the high standard that he already had.

Please please please don't have your children tutored to sit entrance exams. If they are not able to get in off their own backs, they are not the right children to be going to these schools. It is very apparent to teachers during the first year at school if they have been tutored or not and they will struggle to keep up with the the others. When they can't keep up, many end up being tutored throughout their whole school life. It's not fair to put them through this when there are great schools in Dubai which are much more suited to particular needs. Surely it is better for a child to be happy at school and able to cope with the work rather than constantly being stretched to a level that is above them? I wouldn't want my child to always feel like they were the 'weakest' in the class and to feel inadequate because most of the other children were naturally brighter than them.

My friend goes there and has her hair cut by her and loves it and she seems to do a really good job. Another friend went to her for a colour and it was a disaster! Maybe she was just having a bad day? I can recommend Janice at the Hairworks in Ibn Battuta!

I bought the Stokke nappy bag even though it is ridiculously expensive! It's ok, not the best one I have seen but I got it so that we could clip it on to the pram rather than having to carry it all the time. This is a big help because by the time you have filled it with everything you need it can get quite heavy. They are much cheaper in the UK than over here and some of the companies on the internet do free delivery. Can't remember where I got mine from but I think it might have been pramworld.

You'll pay anything from 130,000 to 180,000 depending on which side you live on, what floor and of course the landlord! It's definitely worth it though, despite the bad press that the Palm is getting, I think it's a great place to live!

Dr Jhouni (think that is spelt right) works out of a clinic in Deira but was brought in to American Hospital to see my DD. He is semi-retired now but still works part time. He is Egyptian but trained in Scotland and was highly recommended by our Paediatrician. I think he headed up some sort of child urology medical committee in the middle east.

Try Dr Braithwaite at American Hosiptal. She has had years of experience as a surgeon in the UK. She headed up the Gynaecology and Obstetrics department at one of the big hospitals in London and had her own practice on Harley Street. She is lovely but can be straight talking at times! She did my C Section and has performed surgery on a couple of my friends and they were all really pleased with her. Good luck.

My DD has kidney reflux and went through a stage when she didn't really put on much weight. I had read on the internet that reflux and constant UTIs can cause loss of appetite but when I spoke to the many paediatricians and specialist urologists and nephrologists (we have seen them all!) they said that there is no link and that she would get better. I persevered and she is slowly starting to enjoy her food again and putting more weight on. Everybody told me to give it time and it looks like that was the best advice. If you are still worried, I would go back to your paed and ask them if they can recommend somewhere. I have never heard of Dr Punjani but there are other doctors in Dubai who are specialists in this area so maybe take your daughter for a second opinion.

I was lucky because when I was pregnant she was still pretty new to Dubai and didn't have that many patients. I get the impression from talking to friends, who have seen her since, that she is really busy now so you might find that it is a few weeks before you can get an appointment. All I would say is that she is worth the wait. I have recommended her to lots of pregnant ladies and they have all be pleased with her.

I had a c-section with her last year and cannot say a bad word about her. It was my first baby who was breach and she was fantastic from start to finish. She was very calm on the morning and completely put me at ease (and my husband which was probably more important!). She talked to me the whole way through and joked with my hubby. My scar is tiny and I recovered very quickly. Please do not worry, you are in very safe hands!

My DD is exactly the same. She is almost 13 months now and just like you, I have real difficulty in getting milk and solids down her. We use Hipp Organic Milk and I have put her on the follow on milk as my paed recommended me to do this. She drinks little water/juice and her diet is very limited so for me it was the best thing to do in order for her to get the right nutrients. I also give her Pediavit as well at the moment to supplement her - more for the iron content. I give her 3 bottles (she won't take it out of a different cup) and she drinks about 100ml on each one max. I just keep praying that one day she will suddenly snap out of it and eat and drink more!

I unfortunately had to find this out last week when I had to ring for an ambulance to come and assist my DD who had fallen seriously ill. It was a terrible experience! The operator could not speak English and did not understand a word I was saying! I ended up putting her in the back of a car and driving her to A&E myself.

Dubai don't seem to care. I have taken a flask of hot water on with me and made the bottles up on the plane or I take the bottles with pre-measured water in and just add the formula when needed. If you are going to the UK beware because they are much stricter. You have to have the water measured out in the bottles already and they will make you taste some of them. If you use the ready made milk, they make you open some of them and then they only last for a couple of hours.

Thanks for the help ladies but I have tried all these things. I never make a big deal out of meal times and give her lots of encouragement and praise. I have tried ignoring her and just leaving her to it. Tried different high chairs, different meal times, sitting down as a family, taking her out for picnics - seriously I have done almost everything I can think of. She is quite independent and does prefer feeding herself so I try and encourage her to do this as much as possible. The problem is she will not try new things and just shuts her mouth and shakes her head or she will take a nibble and then throw it away. I don't feed her anything naughty like chocolate and for snacks (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) I try and give her fruit or rice cakes etc... She just isn't interested in eating!!
