Funny about the not understanding "take away" and "to go". I've had plenty an English person tell me I wasn't speaking or spelling properly because I was using American English. It is like speaking a foreign language sometimes so I get why there are so many "Overheard at McDonald's" encounters. About the schooling, it does very much depend on the school or program in the US because there are classes/programs/systems in US schools that seem very similar to the "advanced" levels some have spoken about in the UK curriculum. For example, as another poster mentioned, about AP courses. Some high school students can take these special courses, go on to take a standardized test, and place out of first year college courses but those would most likely be taken by college-bound students. Those who planned early on to go. Many public high school students are on other tracks as well where they take only the basic courses that wouldn't prepare them (as well) for college but then they may go on after high school (grades and test scores aside perhaps) to a community college before trying to attain a 4-year college degree or take remedial courses (w/ no credit) in college. I'd do more research myself on the systems because it's not standardized for every school/level of student. I for one didn't know about most of them when I was in high school but did do AP level courses and passed the standardized tests (no multiple-choice there!) that advanced me past certain foundation-level college courses. I'm quite sure, being on a college-bound track since middle school, I could compete on any college level whether in the UK or US (except I'd probably need translations, lol). Back to high school levels, it does also depend, as another poster said, on the achievement level of the student. A high achieving student may do perfectly well in either system as they could "get ahead" and may be more confident about what they want to do in life. A low or average achiever may not but may still go on to be successful attaining a higher degree they may not have had interest in earlier in high school or had the necessary training for early on in high school. I do think the biggest factor is the child and also, what you, as the parent see as important. Although my experience in both systems is limited to a year or two, I wouldn't put one over the other without research and depending on your/your child's particular circumstance. My DD loves the Chip and Kipper books. I don't explain any of the words (yet) but I'd rather her learn both (living here). When I first flipped through them, not knowing they were British, I thought they (the characters) looked odd. Is it just me or do all the black people in the book have the same odd hair? Interesting to me that the British workbooks in bookstores look so different from American ones too.

It was amazon.co.uk and the dvds said US imported. Checked again and they said region 1. Guess I'll go the multi-region dvd player route! Thanks.

Thanks. I looked on amazon but a few of the dvds are US imports, so still region 1, strangely.

I read online they were to be at 9pm. Gorobattie, you had a nice seat! Was it worth a trip and paying to get into Creek Park? Are they also doing fireworks at Festival City? I only read about Creek Park online.

Srdoucet, if you still want Graham crackers . . . Carrefour and Spinneys sells them, same brand. Can't remember the brand but they have big tubs in the cracker and popcorn section usually on the bottom shelf and smaller packs up top. The tub and package wrapper are a brown color and I think the brand is MY San or something like that. Safestway on Sheikh Zayed Rd also carries the same brand in smaller packs, regular and chocolate. They carried the crumbs before too but might be seasonal, around holiday times. I've used digestive biscuits as well too but the graham crackers do make a different taste.

My LO (me) made a small basket of goodies for her teacher. Chocolates, candies, nice cookies, etc. Managed to get the things all in the same color scheme (though that certainly was not planned) put it in a nice container, wrapped in cellophane and tied up with ribbon. I was supposed to have my DD make a card to go in or on it but, as it was last minute, didn't get a chance. Maybe next year. Gift vouchers are a nice idea too. Though the handbag, bracelets are very generous, I think they are very odd gifts (speaking as a teacher) to get from a teacher/student as opposed to someone who really knows me and what I like, like a friend or family member. If you really want to do this and it's sincere, by all means, do it. Sincerity will come through in whatever you do. Though I'd be grateful, I don't think an extravagant or expensive gift would impress me. but I don't think it impresses the teacher at all but that's just my opinion.

You can't have both? The first time when they told me I could only have one person but mother wanted to be there too, her and my dh switched places several times (shifts!) but eventually, they just let them both stay only asking one or both to leave at particular times. I was perfectly fine with just my dh being there as I dont believe any two women birth alike (not even mother and daughter) and I wouldn't dream of cheating my dh out of the experience. That also is particular to me and (how I know now), I labor. I much prefer(ed) to be left alone and was bothered by the constant attention of both of them. Just needed someone to fetch things when needed, lol. Just consider he IS the other parent. Not saying you have to include him but it does seem to be his right. Knowing what I do now about my husband and what an involved father he is, I'd feel really terrible if I'd excluded him from that experience. I think it all depends on you, your dh and maybe even what your mom thinks. Talk about it more and see if you all can come to a better understanding. Yes, it is your body and he isn't going through it but it is his baby too so maybe he can help once the baby is out (or switch then?) so he can cut the chord or see baby coming out? Hopefully, you all will work it out.

Oh my, I have too many of these stories. DH tries to close a bank account. They try everything to get him not to close. The best convo (after many) was this. BankEmployee. Can we see your ID. (Dh hands it over) You are C--- D----? DH: Yes. BankEmpolyee: You don't look like a C-----D-----. Are you sure you're C---- D----? DH: Uhhhh, yes. I'm sure. That's me (not like there's no picture!) BankEmployee: You should change this name. Not good for you. I told Dh when he asked if he was really CD, he should've said, no, I'm not. I just stole all his ID.

Yes, it has happened to me planning a very small intimate adult party and it was so hard to hold back tears (and these were friends of mine for many, many years). All came late, only one called to say she'd be late. I felt so stupid for going out of my way to make a nice affair. Sadly, I've since learned to not invest so much in other people's manners . . . if that makes sense. I personally think it's more manners and less a Dubai thing because it doesn't matter who invites me and from what culture. If I'm going to be late or have to cancel, I always always call. Ow these are such heartbreaking stories. If this would happen to me, my age, I would be terribly sad. I can't imagine the impact this has on a child. So what to do as a parent? Not have parties anymore? It's so hard. I agree with others, that it is about being here short term. But then, you live here NOW, don't they want to enjoy the present with friends. Without making any commitment (to anything in life) you only make yourself unhappy in the long term. At least many ladies here seem to think it is very rude. Let's keep up the good attitude and there will be a lot less Dubai bashing... edited by Eva B. on 25/05/2011

Thanks solaris. I will look into it. Why livelytrish, that's when you learn language best of course and is the best time to learn multiple languages ! Isn't that when you learned to speak? Childhood? By "course", I would assume any "classes" for a 3-year old would be play based. That is what I'm looking into for a child who has already begun learning a second language through full immersion during the school year. Any other suggestions? Arabic or French playgroups?

Hi all, ok so i am just wondering who here gives there toddlers vitamins? If so which ones and why? My DD who is 3 in August has a relatively varied diet consisting of fruits, vegies, milk, bread, yoghurt, organic bars, some sweets, rice ect. But now im thinking does she need a multivitamin too and she dosnt have alot of oily fish so where to get her omega 3 from? Flax seeds/ meal is suppose to be a good alternative however i have no idea about how to cook this? Incorporate it into meals? Can i put it into a smoothie type drink perhaps would this be the easiest? Thoughts and advice please. You can also sprinkle into the batter of or on pancakes, muffiins, etc.

Simply wonderful all round! Thought Harry, kate and William were going to fall around in fits of the giggles at one moment. For everyone who continually moans about the UK today showed why the UK is the envy of the world and such a great great country. No one can do it like the British! Though I didn't watch the wedding live, I did watch clips and read articles afterwards (it is everywhere and on every radio station afterall). I found it very interesting and am curious to learn more about British culture and history. I think coming to Dubai forces you a bit to learn about it anyway. But . . . I'm not sure why a royal wedding would make a country great or other countries envious? Not saying it's not a great country, just don't see how this would make one so. Interesting, fascinating, yes, but enviable? I enjoyed reading all your comments on the wedding. As I said, interesting . . .

So back home in Oz, no one would've told you your dress was split? What about if tissue was stuck hanging out your dress? Just curious as to whether it is just a custom thing, that people overlook things??

Carpetland has wall-to-wall and the local curtain/furniture shops (that make custom made curtains, Arabic furniture, etc) also will install and I've heard Dragonmart as well. I've done wall-to-wall in my chidren's rooms and I much prefer it to the bare floor or area rugs/carpet. Perhaps because I prefer or find it easier to vacuum the dust than sweep it!
