Hi I think most people would advise the Corniche Hospital, this is the government maternity hospital and where you would usually be transferred to from any private hospital if there were complications. They have been restricting their services to expats (only those who are deemed to be complicated or high risk) however, in recent times as they are very over subscribed but if you are having twins I am sure that would qualify you for access. Like many government hospitals the admin and waiting times can be tedious but they have a lot of good doctors and great nurses. You would really need to get in touch with them to check on the insurance too but overall despite the inconveniences I think this would be the best / safest option, although similar to NHS in terms of room sharing etc. There are a team of mainly British midwives who you see for ante natal appointments, you don't have a designated doctor, so who manages your delivery is dependent who is on duty, unlike in many private hospitals. https://www.seha.ae/corniche/english/Pages/default.aspx However, another option for you might be Brightpoint, I think they have the same level of NICU, they are a new hospital, they seem to have attracted some good doctors, Im afraid I don't have any personal experience with them but have heard good things in general - be worth checking them out. www.brightpoint.ae Hope this helps!

Ok I can talk from my personal experience of Mafraq Hospital and gynae cancer related issues. Its very hard to do anything over the phone - you will need to go and "open a file" in person - I was referred there by another doctor in the government system so I think that may have made things smoother for me, its hard to tell... Its very hard to find a specialist in this area in the UAE and I don't think going here is a bad option (if you can get a referral more the better) . Once you are "in the system" it is easier , you just have to figure out how to navigate the various procedures on the day for registering etc. I was seen by Dr Ray, however head of the Department is Dr Karim Elmasry and I understand he is very experienced and who I would be pushing to get an appointment with. My situation was quite complicated and I was back and forth between gynae and oncology and in the end I went to UK (I think they were glad to get me off their hands!). If you want to email me I can give you some contacts there - they might make it easier for you to get an appointment - let me know when you have my address and I will take it down... Hi You should look at Al Raha Beach Area - Al Muneera or Al Zeina, apartments there are spacious and there are facilities on your doorstep such as supermarkets, cafes, beach and pools. Ive just moved to Al Muneera and love not having to drive everywhere. Its only about 10 minutes from the airport door to door, and not too bad a commute for your husband either. Only 10 minutes to Yas island with Yas Mall, lots of hotels and the marina, so definitely a good location for that. For schools, its a bit of a drive - I am 35 minutes to my daughters school, (BSAK) there is also Cranleigh school on Saadiyat Island, in fact Saadiyat apartments would be another good option for you to look at, and right on an awesome beach. Its hard to find somewhere that ticks all the boxes but I'd say do some research on Al Muneera, Al Zeina and Saadiyat. There's also Reem Island which is closer to the city, but I think with the outside areas and the general feel of the place, Raha Beach is more family friendly. Hope that helps!

I'd highly recommend you download the trip advisor city guide to your phone - we used it in NY and it was invaluable, as great to look up nearby restaurants and read reviews, and also to help us find our way when we got lost! We stayed at the Fitzpatrick Hotel (on Lexington Avenue) which was walking distance to Central Park, Times Square in fact we walked everywhere from there. We went to the Brooklyn Diner (they have a website) and really enjoyed it, great authentic american diner experience and food was great. Its sort of what Frankie and Bennys or TGI Fridays is trying to be - but this is the real deal!

My daughter goes to Treehouse Nursery in Khalifa City A. I actually cannot praise them highly enough, great facilities, fantastic caring staff and a lovely atmosphere, my daughter went to another nursery previously for several months and never really settled, the difference at Treehouse is the staff actually care and take time to get to know her, its not just a childcare factory / money making exercise which some of the other nurseries do tend to feel like. Bright beginnings also has a very good reputation but I don't have any personal experience of that.

Worth checking out Oasis Beach Tower at JBR - I have stayed there a number of times, its right on the walk so lots of restaurants on your doorstep. They also have their own restaurant and bar and are right next to Frankies and Wagamama. They have a pool and you can also use the pool and beach at the Jebel Ali Golf resort - I am sure they run a shuttle service. They have 3 and 4 bedroom apartments and they are absolutely huge - all have en suites, huge kitchen, big lounge and dining area. http://www.jaresortshotels.com/Properties/OasisBeachTower/Tower/Overview.aspx

Yes, definitely but check the price they will offer you in a few different jewellers - don't accept the first price you are offered in the first place you go to, let them know you will compare the price. I did this previously at madinat zayed and there was a slight difference in what I was offered between different shops (can't remember the name of the good one - sorry!). Think i ended up about 50dhs better off from just going to a different shop.

Hi Hasnae Firstly you want to make sure you have health insurance in place ASAP - your husbands employer will arrange this. Depending on the insurance company you can choose which hospital to go to for ante natal and delivery care. The main maternity hospital is Corniche in the city - this is a government hospital, it has a good reputation for maternity care and attracts doctors and midwives from overseas to work here - however, they don't accept all insurance cards and won't accept cash payments now - so you have to have one of the pre approved insurance companies' plans. The administration and organisation is chaotic but the health care is generally accepted to be the best for both mum and baby in Abu Dhabi, if not the UAE. Many people also use Al Noor Hospital - it is a private hospital- there is one in the city (Khalifa St) and another on Airport Road (further out of the city centre), I have heard good and bad as with most things, but I have personally been looked after by Dr Ahmed Abdel Haq and highly recommend him if you do end up going here. He worked in the UK and Ireland for a long time and had similar ideas and expectations about care that I did. Regarding a nanny - there are lots of Facebook forums, especially if you know where you will be living you can go on to those community Facebook pages and often you see people looking for work, families helping their nanny find a new employer if they are leaving etc. I think there is a UAE Housemaids page ( or something similar). I haven't done it myself, but from friends who have, I understand it can be a lengthy process just finding the right person, let alone the visa paperwork and procedures which will ensue - we are talking weeks and even months for this if there are any complications . With regards your daughter - my best advice would be to get family out to visit around the time of the birth - you will have peace of mind at least knowing she is happy and with people who she knows. Next best thing would be as soon as you know where you are living let us know and we can advise you where to meet other mums and toddlers and I am sure one of the other mums would help you out. Hope this helps somewhat. Jackie

I would say they are a bit more expensive and not the same choice / range. There is a company in Dubai - Just kidding - they have a website and stock a few more well known brands (Maxi Cosi, Stokke) worth having a look on there to compare prices. I bought my Maxi Cosi baby seats here in UAE but the Britax I wanted for the next stage wasn't available here so I bought it in the UK and got my parents to bring it with them when they visited. Toys R Us also stock a decent range here and there is a more limited range in Babyshop - they have a few cheaper ones and also Maxi Cosi and a few others (can't remember the brands - its been a while!).

Hi You won't be challenged about getting in a taxi without a car seat - few people bother, however I personally wouldn't - driving in general is poor and taxi drivers, in my opinion, some of the worst drivers on the roads. I wouldn't dream of driving my car without my toddler in a car seat and most expats - used to western laws and driving standards - are the same. But not everyone has the same attitude or understanding of the dangers and it's very common to see toddlers bouncing around in the back and even babies on laps in the front seats.but the government are trying to change this slowly but surely - for example all babies born in the government maternity hospital in Abu Dhabi are issued a car seat on leaving the hospital. You can use a limo company called Careem - they have a website and an app you can download - they are more expensive than taxis but will provide a car seat on request and you can get a fare quote in advance so you know what it will cost. Al Ghazal limo service is again a bit more expensive than taxis but will also provide car seats if you request in advance. Hope this helps - good luck with the move :) Hope this helps!

Corniche would be too much of a drive for you to school every day, and you can get a villa in kca or Mbz for what you'd pay for an apartment on corniche. I would personally go for kca - more developed, close to lots of amenities such as supermarkets, restaurants and you should get property for a reasonable price. Although MBZ will be less expensive I would say there's less around, you do get what you pay for. Depending on budget you could also consider Al Reef where there are lots of families and it's not too far too school and close to KCA and yas island too.

Hi Al Noor Hospital is very popular, the old one in Khalifa Street and probably more well known is the new one on Airport Road (near the Grand Mosque and Zayed Sports City). I personally delivered (3 years ago) in Al Rahba hospital, which is government and I found the aftercare from the nurses and midwives to be excellent - they really helped me get off to a great start with breastfeeding. You would find the same at the Corniche Hospital which is the main maternity hospital - although waiting times for ante natal appointments in both Corniche and Al Rahba can be quite long, medical care is generally regarded as excellent. Although beware that apparently the corniche have now changed their policy to only accepted direct billed insurance so there is now no option to pay upfront and claim back, excluding lots of people from the service. You can expect to share a room in the corniche with other mums, you may have to share in Al Rahba but they have a lot of single rooms, and you would get a private room in Al Noor. Hope this helps - good luck !!!!

Hi, In Dubai I can recommend the Fish and Chips room at JBR and a friend has told me that Bobs Fish and Chips at Dubai Marina is awesome (both just like home) although I havent sampled (yet). In AD Coopers at Park Rotana used to be really good, not been in a long time. Heard great things about Gary Rhodes Fish and Chips at St Regis on Corniche, they do this on a Thursday night.

I had the same issue, Maxi Cosi seat but no isofix points in the Pajero. I bought the Easy Fix Base, it installs into any car, no Isofix required - i found it was really sturdy and was happy with it as a base - it was a bit hard to get one here, i eventually got mines from babyshop.

Hi I haven't personally but one of my husbands colleagues had this done a week ago with a dentist from the British Dental Clinic on Hamdan Street and was very happy with them - said it wasn't nearly as bad as he had expected . Not sure if they have a surgeon but hopefully they could put you on to someone decent? I might need to have this done myself (putting off the inevitable) and will go to the British Dentist I have heard of a few people who have gone there for routine stuff and are very happy. Hope this helps. I also know Al Noor on Airport Road has a dental clinic might be worth trying that too? edited by jackieq513 on 06/02/2014

Get this weeks Time Out, there was an ad in last weeks mentioning there is a special Valentines section in it. Think it comes out tomorrow? Any of the restaurants at Souq Qaryat Al Beri would be nice, looking out over the water, there's Abdel Wahab, Meat Co, Sho Cho, Noodle House, Ushna all nice and wont be OTT expensive. Afterwards you can get a golf buggy along to the Shangri La, I love having a drink in their lobby bar, Hanan, very glam and lovely - or Pearls and Caviar, golf buggy will take you there too (part of Shangri La just a separate building). St Regis on Saadiyat has Turquoiz seafood restaurant right down at the beach, or Sontaya, Thai restaurant, both lovely settings but would be a bit more pricey. Theres a bar in Turquoiz and another in the main hotel, Turquoiz a bit nicer for a romantic drink! Beach House at Park Hyatt on Saadiyat is also lovely, right at the beach and has a rooftop bar which is really nice. Think Jumeirah Etihad Towers are also doing some valentines special deals, I lost the flyer , but thats a beautiful hotel and a few different restaurants and bars there. Hope this helps a little! Good luck!

It's not compulsory but some private doctors will recommend you have a file there. In the unlikely and unfortunate event you had to go there in an emergency if you don't have a file there you will not be given priority. I have heard cases where the baby is kept there and the mother is sent to another hospital. I'm sure that's not the norm but it is an outside possibility. Most of my mummy friends in AD opened a file there ( me included) although lots chose to deliver elsewhere.

Hi Muttek, I lived there for a year and still travel back every 1-2 years on holiday as we have family still living there. Bermuda is beautiful - honestly the nicest beaches I have ever seen, it is a very small island, I would say great for families, but its really the polar opposite of Dubai. Shopping is grim ! However you are only a 2 hour flight from New York ;) Cost of living is very high, however, salaries do reflect this.

Hi! I gave birth in Al Rahba 2 years ago, my friend also did just this week! I would definitely use the hospital again, they are similar to the corniche although not a dedicated Maternity hospital. I had a good experience there overall, I found the nurses to be very caring, the hospital was spotlessly clean. They were very pro natural birth and pro breastfeeding and got my daughter and I off to a great start. The waiting times for ante natal appointments arent as bad as Corniche (but still not good!) and you will more than likely get a private room after delivery, there are only a few shared rooms. Theres a new head of the ob gyn department, an American doctor called Dr Erik, apparently he is very good, but like other govt hospitals you dont get an appointment with a specific doctor and you cant guarantee who will actually deliver your baby - its whoever is on duty. Also, you cant absolutely guarantee you will get an epidural as theres not a dedicated maternity anaesthetist so if theres an emergency elsewhere in the hospital they would be given priority. Hope this info helps!

Yes, they have them in Jones the Grocer here in Abu Dhabi, I'm sure you will get them in their Dubai branch too. Also, try Daiso, they have lots of different lunchboxes with different sized compartments, and also separate containers in various sizes and will be much cheaper than Jones', although perhaps not as long lasting!

Hi With regards to Abu Dhabi, the Al Noor Hospital will transfer you to either Corniche or Al Rahba (both government)in the event of any complications as they are not set up to deal with preterm deliveries, there is a cut off I think it may be 35 weeks or before but I'm not 100% on this exactly. I know this as I registered there and went for some antenatal appointments, they told me in the event of any complications they would suggest I go to Al Rahba, so I just switched there and delivered there and was happy with the care. Unfortunately you do have to pay and claim back at both the Corniche and Al Rahba but (in my opinion) you wont get better care in AD. PS I know a few twin mums in AD, all delivered in Corniche. Hope this helps.

Hi! Manazel do lease out properties on behalf of landlords, but as a tenant who tried to lease a villa from them, I wouldn't recommend, they were very inflexible and difficult to deal with. Their are "pink people" on the facebook page, but they don't administrate it in any way, I used to live in Al Reef and seen many an interesting (and not very favourable) discussion about pink property take place - so dont be put off going on there and advertising, Im sure there would be interest. I eventually rented through The Specialists, their office is in Dubai but their agent is on site in Al Reef almost every day, the guy I dealt with was called Georges. Might be worth a try, especially as their office is in Dubai - much easier for you to do the admin.

Visit the Manarat Al Saadiyat exhibition on Saadiyat Island, it will be a 10 to 15 min drive from Yas, there's a great cafe there (Fanr), you can sit outside and they are licensed too. Khalifa Park worth a trip for the little ones, there's a big playpark area, a little train ride and a small aquarium. There's also a "splash park" there, although I've heard mixed reviews so maybe not rushing over to that one. As someone else said, the Corniche beach has lots of family areas with shaded play parks for kids. There's a Johnny Rockets inside Yas Marina Circuit, they have a terrace you can sit on and it's right on the F1 track, great to have a look at the track (and a burger!). Stars N Bars at Yas Marina usually have a family fun day on a Saturday with food and activities for kids. Kids Park Zoo just outside Abu Dhabi, on the Dubai side is apparently a nice day out, I havent been but many friends have and recommended it.

Hi, my baby had one at 6 months, we had it in a children's hospital in the UK, she was not sedated as they had a policy of " feed and sleep " for babies, she was swaddled and wore headphones, as it was a specialist children's hospital (Yorkhill) the MRI machine had a screen with cartoons on inside, she actually woke up but stared mesmerized at the screen, it lasted about 20 minutes. We sat in the room with her and it was very noisy. Her doctor here (Mafraq) wanted to repeat it at one year old but under sedation , we were reluctant to agree to this and went back to the uk for a follow up appointment where doctors there said we did not need one at that stage, so were thankfully spared that. However i think theres a chance we will need to have another early next year and im not sure how successful the feed and sleep would be with a two year old, maybe they will have to sedate.... I have looked into this a lot and it seems it is quite common for children to be sedated, both here and in the Uk, as not only is it a bit scary for them, lying in the tube with a lot of noise, they need to stay still to get good images to make it worthwhile.

Hi if you are used to the Springs you would be disappointed by Al Reef, at present there is only one shop, a corner shop type affair, which admittedly does have most things but Spinney's it's not. There's also a takeaway place which is nice and clean and does nice food, but that's it. There are parks and there's a communal pool and gym, but nothing spectacular. However, you can drive to Etihad Plaza, with Abela's Supermarket, Mugg and Bean, a pharmacy a, a bank and a few other shops in 10 to 15 minutes. In the same time you could get to Al Bandar, with Spinneys and a few cafes, medical centre and pharmacy. But for walking, theres not much around in Al Reef. On the plus side, there's a great community spirit, very friendly and helpful, there's a Facebook group, Al Reef Village Group, join that and you'll get a feel for it. We have lived in Al Reef for 2 years and have been relatively happy but are tiring of the long drive to the city. If you have any more questions on it just ask away.

Lozaleno, you'd be best going to the Corniche and asking about the insurance coverage and costs with them directly as the information changes all the time and you will get the correct information only through speaking to them. With regards baby switching, I have never heard of this happening here, however, as a first time mum, its your right to worry about everything!! and this is something i did also consider, so after I had my baby last year i made sure she was with me at all times and if she had to leave for any checks or anything my husband went with her when i wasnt able to, she didnt leave our sight. Also, they are tagged once they are born, so even if someone did make a mistake, the baby will have their name on their ankle strap. i think most hospitals now encourage rooming in, eg baby stays in your room with you so you shouldnt have anything to worry about. (I delivered in Al Rahba hospital, also government, but on the outskirts past Shahama on road to Dubai so maybe not ideal for your location) With regards breastfeeding, the only hospitals who actively encourage and provide advice are the Corniche and Al Rahba, i know from friends' experience that Al Noor do not offer any lactation support, however you can always contact La Leche League UAE in Abu Dhabi for any help or advice with regards to this and the ladies there will be happy to help you out. Good luck! its such an exciting time and so much to look forward to, try not to stress too much about the birth and hospital, thats only a day or so, it's the next 18 years youve got to worry about! ;)

I'd definitely go for the bassinet, even if baby only spends 10 minutes in it, it's 10 minutes with your hands free to do essential stuff, like eat and go to the bathroom! And it makes it easier to organise yourself if you can put baby in it for a while, I also think the motion of the plane and the noise helps them go to sleep, but also agree with others take your own blanket as at best you will get the regualr aircraft ones which could be itchy / irritating for baby skin. I preferred night flights as after doing a few I knew that this would work for my baby, HOWEVER, depends on the baby and on the day, you run the risk that if baby decides that she wants to stay up, or is upset, then she will be making a lot of noise on a night flight when lots of people want to sleep, whereas on a day flight your fellow passengers would be more tolerant and less cranky! Personally, I opted for what I thought would work best for my baby, and that was a night flight, and decided to adopt a blank stare if anyone looked remotely annoyed if there was any noise, fortunately it worked well as she slept en route to airport, woke up in terminal then was exhausted by the time we got seated on the flight and slept for most of it. Good luck, it will be easier than you think :)

Hi I would suggest take a look on dubizzle, and also take advantage of open houses at al reef on a Saturday, we have lived there 2 yeArs and have had some maintenance issues but no more than our last place in the city. Not all gardens are the same size and some plots better than others so worth doing some investigating, although all same inside the right plot could make it much more attractive. You have space to park 2 cars in your driveway and visitors parking is also available in all streets. Al Reef is not perfect but has a nice community feel, but the distance into town can put people off. Personally I Wouldn't consider Khalifa City B, its also quite far out and unlike Al Reef is not a community, more a collectio of standalone villas, I have heard lots of stories from peope who really didnt enjoy living here as an expat, as there are not so many westerners here and were sometimes made to feel uncomfortable. There are other forums for an Abu Dhabi Woman you should have a google and see what you come up with yourself. Yes, its cheaper there, but not without reason. You have a good budget, have a look at Al Raha gardens, the finish there is better than Al Reef and there are shops on your doorstep. Good luck!
