Is there a big difference in private and state schools in Brisbane? Oh yes indeedy and boy will people be ready to give you their opinion of the best schools! Or argue that 'they did just fine in state school' ;) It's a very emotive topic in Brisbane. The 'old school tie' is alive and well in Brisbane more than anywhere else, and even nearing the age of 40, whenever I meet someone from Brisbane, one of the first questions I am likely to be asked is 'where did you go to school'. It's a loaded question and is an instant identifier amongst Brisbane folk, giving away your upbringing, your family history and your perceived status all in one answer. Those not educated in a private school (or Catholic- they are considered 'private') will be quick to say that it doesn't matter but it still is [i'>very[/i'> relevant in Brisbane. Law firms, engineering firms- all professional roles- will still heavily recruit based on the secondary school attended and having the 'right' alma mater matters. Now. Onto your orginal question. Yes there are some great state schools- Kelvin Grove, Indooroopilly, Kenmore and The Gap to name a few that consistently do well. And of course Brisbane State High, which competes with the GPS schools and is considered a pseudo private school. Some of these (KG, Indooroopilly) do the IB curriculum as well as the OP. There are private/catholic schools with better reputations that others, and some are perceived to turn out 'ladies over ladettes' or vice versa. Not getting into the nitty gritty of it, should I have daughters, and be living in Brisbane I would enrol them in the following (in no particular order): Somerville House (Anglican) All Hallows' School (Catholic) Brisbane Girls Grammar (non church affiliated) St Margarets (Anglican) Lourdes Hill (Catholic) (if living on the south side - now that's a whole new arguement ;) ) or if wanting to do IB St Peters Luthern, Indooroopilly (Lutheran) Indooroopilly State High (catchment controlled) Kelvin Grove College (state) Or if circumstances meant a state school: Brisbane State High (state but very heavily catchment controlled) Kenmore State High Indooroopilly State High Good luck navigating this potential minefield!!

Sorry to hear that your DD is suffering. I've been epileptic for almost 20 years. I took Tegretol for a few years but the side effects were terrible. I switched to Epilim and have been on that for about 18 or so years. The side effects from it are far more manageable. I would take the medications side effects any day over having seizures, losing drivers license, and potentially having a seizure and suffering the side effects from *that*!

For our school/class: * organize a coffee morning * compile contact list for parents once getting their ok * ask for parent involvement as per teachers request (math/reading groups) * collect money for gifts. We ask each parent for a kitty contribution of 150AED at the beginning of the year. This kitty is used for teacher presents, etc * definitely get another mum to assist you.

I agree: the prices ARE going up at a terrifying rate in the ranches. Try Allsopp and Allsopp or House Hunters as both have a lot of stock in AR. Be prepared to either sign soon or budget a higher rent into your calculations. The reasonably priced villas are going fast once they are listed unfortunately I can't help feeling an uneasy sense of déjà vu

Scotchanddiet, do you mind me asking which bank you're with? Having to pay 3 x school fees off our own backs I'm keen to learn if there's a more manageable way to do it!!! TIA, K Sure :) it's a platinum card with ADCB (Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank) and our kids go to one of the Innoventures owned schools.

How come you all don't vaccinate your children against chicken pox? It's easy and chicken pox is horrible! Our whole household got it before the summer. **ALL** of us were vaccinated (both kids and me) or had it as a child (husband, nanny) yet we still came down with it, albeit a much much milder form of it. Many of my vax'ed Australian friends kids have had it in the last few years as there is a new 'super' strain of it that is resistant to the live vaccination given. To the OP try calamine lotion added to the bath water. It does certainly help. Phenergan at night if it gets really unbearable.

We pay our school fees by credit card. The school itself doesn't accept the credit card payment (I suspect due to the 2.5% merchant fees) however we can use our card to order a direct bank deposit to the school. It appears on our credit card but then converts to a periodic payment (ie almost 0%.. think it is 0.28% or something minimal) with either 6,9 or 12 month equal payments. The bank has an agreement like this with 500 schools in the UAE. Perhaps check with your bank to see if they facilitate this. Coming up with 80-100K in advance is just too tricky otherwise, but monthly repayments are much more manageable.

Yes it's going around at the moment [url=http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/school-warning-on-chicken-pox-in-uae-2013-05-30-1.508468'>link[/url'> When my eldest had it I covered him in calamine lotions and also bought rescue remedy cream. I kept him off school a week. My LO had the vaccination. Thank for that link. Yes all our house either vaccinated (kids, me) or had it as a child (husband, maid) but we have all come down with it. It's not a full blown episode but we are still itchy and miserable. Is the milder form that we seem to have, as contagious as a first time sufferer would be?

Were they playing minecraft?? I currently have two 8yr olds sitting in my living room playing it on their respective iPads. My oldest is often asked to make sure he brings his iPad when he goes to play dates. In fact, I've had moms call me to rind me to get him to bring it along or drop it over during the day if its an after-school play date and if I don't want my son to bring his device to school. They usually play minecraft in a multi player format meaning they are actually engaging with one another. oh dear... my 9 year old doesn't have an ipad and has never played online games...... Pikachu, minecraft isn't necessarily online (although there is that capability). It's played offline mainly and the kids do it in ICT at school. I'm not really up on it tbh but they build stuff with blocks. I'm really not okay with 'online' games and the danger it can present. I'd prefer them playing the game with each other in a play environment , (that also involves some outdoor play, eating together, jumping on trampoline etc )than having a kid holed up playing it solo.

I have a nephew with asphergers, a niece whose autistic and has fetal alcohol syndrom and a sister who is dyslexic/ADD. A change of diet and physical activity has helped with some symptoms...as it did with my son who had an allergy to red dye. with my family every avenue was researched as im sure OP has done. my post was to add to the other posts. yes therapy, medication but you can also add a change of diet or fitness. Diet does Help. Staying away from boxed processed food helped. Organic only. No red meAt. These changes have all helped. edited by dogcatcher on 21/05/2013 Let me explain... When you come into a thread that is that primarily consists of woman sharing their experience of helping their children with diagnosed ADHD and giving each other support and you say something offensive like "in my day we called ADD day dreaming" indicates that you support the view that its not a 'real' disorder. Suggesting that a bit of salmon and a run will help with ADHD is kind of on par with telling someone struggling with depression "in my day it was called sadness" and "go for a run and change your diet and your depression will disappear. Would a child or adult benefit from a diet which is less in processed ingredients and artificial flavours? Well yes, it would be beneficial to *anyone* to eliminate these things. Is ADHD caused by diet? Absolutely not. If eliminating food from a diet 'fixes' ADHD then it was not ever true ADHD to begin with. Am I exhausted from the day in day out antics of having a child with ADHD? yes. Am I tired from not sleeping for the last four years for fear that my child with no understanding of danger will climb off the balcony on the middle of the night? Yes. Am I frustrated as **** when people infer that ADHD doesn't really exist but can be cured by diet? Absolutely! Do I have to steel myself and mentally prepare when sitting in the school car park before collecting my ADHD child from school for I know that something is likely to have occurred during the school day that the teacher needs to inform me of. ? Every. freaking.day. edited by Scotchanddiet on 21/05/2013

To OP.... I havent read any of the comments just your original post. Have you looked at a change of diet or fitness for your child who's being monitored for this. I read something on the Internet a few days ago that said, in my day ADD was called daydreaming. My son was very hyper and would act out a lot then we changed his diet. No red or orange food coloring! Lots of sushi...salmon to be specific and he changed. It seems we are very quick to medicate kids when sometimes all they need is to go ride a bike, play in a park, dog, get dirty, get away from games and TV and change their diet. Dog catcher -Do you not think that parents of a child with any kind of additional needs will have explored every avenue? Do you honestly think they want their kid labeled? In 'your day' maybe autism was just considered 'he's a bit quirky and anti social' but medical research has advanced.

We had to do this too. We got the orange 'employment entry' paperwork done so it was in her hand. I booked her to Kish and back in the same afternoon. She never left the plane Although I'm a travel agent , I still went to an agency in Karama that specializes in this. I took my maid with me to the agency and they explained to her clearly what was going to happen. She was there and back in a matter of hours. The plane was full of maids and prostitutes according to my maid!! The agency I used was called Zomorod Travel in Karama near the post office. There number is +971-4-3977813 Good luck!

Australia is my 'home' but I'm definitely not wanting to move there right now. The country is in one big hot mess. Ineffective government , out of control housing, food, utilities, clothing etc costs. 47% tax on higher income earners, parents pulling their kids from public school and making significant sacrifices to afford private schools. Just on schools, my kids are enrolled at a private school at an annual (post tax) cost of $25K each. That means earning up to $85K pre tax just for school fees. Mortgage interest rates aren't high at present (I think 4-6%) however housing affordability is at its lowest. With the slump in the economy there is a significant increase in crime, including violent crime. Nope- happy here in safe, tax free Middle East with my children being educated in a good IB school.

There is an Australian school in Sharjah. Its location is convenient if you live in the Mirdif area. It is worth looking into. I'm not sure if they are continuing with the QLD curriculum. I heard from a parent that they were looking for IB accreditation in the future. I think this was VISS though, AISS might still be sticking with the Aust curriculum.

Most Australian families with primary aged children that I know (and ourselves included) have our children at IB schools. The PYP curriculum is fabulous and I love seeing the work my kids do. My oldest in particular is thriving in the IB curriculum. Kids art work recently was aboriginal dot painting and another friends child was studying The Stolen Generation and watching Rabbit Proof Fence in his grade 6 class. Very Australian education there! And on a topic that might not be discussed in an overly 'PC' Aussie school.... Visit schools with both curriculums and decide which one might suit your child better.

We left Star and moved to another school and couldn't be more thrilled with the decision. Any post I write about the negatives of this school get deleted in seconds (as does anyone else that writes anything less than flattering) so there's no point anymore. You'll be hard pressed to find a negative comment about this school (and a few others, namely one beginning with R) as they get deleted. Good luck with your school search.

I visited AIS for some work I was doing a while back and whilst the teachers there were lovely and the principal, the children were not so much. Very few Aussie kids -mostly Arabs - and incredibly rude and disrespectful. That was my opinion as an outsider anyway! I know of one family at VISS and I have not heard an complaints from them. If you are looking for a similar curriculum to Australian, you should investigate IB. Many Australian schools offer IB now - for example in QLD all the schools of excellence (Kelvin Grove, Toowong, Indooroopilly) and some outstanding private schools (St Peters, John Paul College). It's really a very interesting way of learning and is similar to Australian style. Why don't you have a look at DIA and Gems Wellington? We originally had our kids at aBritish school then switched to IB at DIA. It's been a very positive move. Which state are you from?

Thanks for the responses :) It was 'painted' when we moved in with a very light watered down coat of paint (over the concrete walls) a pale beige colour. Unfortunately, what this means is that whenever I wipe a off a mark from the wall the paint comes too! Thus I have white patches. My landlord is a very reasonable lady (despite not paying service fees for oh.. Several years(!!), so I will approach her and ask if she will do the repainting for the new tenants under the circumstances. Just wanted to check that wasn't a steadfast rule in place.

Hi EW ladies, Looking into travel plans for 2013 and was wondering how much people in Dubai roughly spend on their annual holiday/vacation? We did an amazing cruise last year which was around US $10,000 for 2 weeks (family of 4) including airfares. DH says I'm not allowed to spend that much again next year! :( Thanks! edited by missau80 on 12/11/2012 That's very reasonable for 4 ppl for 2 weeks! Where did you cruise? Was that two cabins? The thing with cruising is that your budget is reasonably set from the start, all meals are included etc so you can do a more accurate budget than say, flying to a destination, pre paying accommodation and spending as you need to which can blow out pretty quickly is there are exchange rates etc involved. Cruising to me is a sensible way to budget your holiday money in advance. Our budget varies wildly depending on where we are going, how many holidays we are taking that year, how many times we've had to return to our home country for various things etc. For our family of 4, I usually budget about 4000 -5000 a month- so about 50- 60,000 a year to spend on travel give or take if husband gets paid a bonus ;). That way, we can do lots of little cheaper holidays flying economy and staying at reasonable accommodation (ie Sri Lanka, Thailand etc) or we can blow the lot on one or two higher end trips with business class (NYC or Europe).

Hi Scotchanddiet Just bumping this post seeing if you are back.... Also have you started the Natural Calm? Is it working?? Thanks Honestly? No I don't think it made any real difference. I was hoping it would be the 'wonder drug' but not so much. What I have found to be reasonably effective is a regular generic Magnesium, Calcium and Zinc tablet. I ground it up in the mortar and pestle and put it in a drink for my son. I give it at night and in the morning. Still doesn't make a massive enough difference to make us yell its praises from the rooftops... I think we will be heading back to the doctor soon and exploring other options, especially with school going back in a few weeks. We are at Kids First and are happy there. My son does Speech with Andria (who has a lot of personal experience with ADD/ADHD and I believe an *excellent* choice for our son - I would recommend her for any child presenting with similar difficulties) and he did some OT as well over the summer. They have not recommended that we continue down the OT road (phew!!! Appreciate that for our wallet!) so that's good. I had his hearing tested at the American Hospital with an audiologist and an ENT- just to rule out any hearing loss to explain the speech and language delay. How old is your little one Missymoo?

(thank you Little Poppet for sending me down that road of discovery!!) You are welcome!! Most people think I'm insane for not letting my oldest son have certain foods and think I'm being 'mean'- but they aren't around to the see the aftermath if he eats certain 'numbers'. One thing to look out for are the naturally occurring nasties- things like green grapes for example. Eating a few grapes is like mainlining pure sugar for my boy. It sends him absolutely CRAZY! Ditto for honey, yet golden syrup in cooking is fine. Also look at breads... if you are in QLD, then you might be happy to know that all Brumbies and Bakers delights breads are on the 'failsafe' diet except for a few that have dried fruit in them. McDonalds Australia Happy Meals are also 'safe' if you want to let your kids have a treat and feel a bit more like a normal kid. (just be cautious of the ketchup- I'm pretty sure Macca's ketchup is okay though) Have you read the book The Fail Safe Diet? It's a little OTT but has some good guidelines in it. My youngest one (who is Dx'ed as ADHD) is showing the same reactions to foods as his big brother - especially anything orange/yellow. What's your email address Greenish and I can send you a little card that you can keep in your purse with the danger additivies/numbers - helps a lot when shopping!

Saffron is lovely! We had the set menu and the food was divine and plentiful! Dress code was not dressy- most men had shorts on so your husband doesn't have to panic! The beach villas are gorgeous and roomy and have private plunge pools. Really relaxing. The is some sand dredging going on a the moment but it is not noisy and doesn't affect the villas. Definitely bring some snacks- I'm so glad we did. Just some cheese and crackers, scotch and diet coke ;) and nibbles. I had read on trip advisor about people's wine being taken from them so I just packed it in our bags. Mini bar is normal size and prices are very reasonable I thought- 25 for a beer, 40 for scotch, 15 for soda- usual mini bar prices really. The service is great and the beach villas gorgeous. It feels like Thailand- not 45 mins from Dubai! Enjoy your stay! We can't wait to book there again.

Hi there! My son goes to Kids First on Al Wasl Rd and sees Andria. We're really happy with the progress and Andria is very good with our son. She gives us homework to do with him and involves not only us as parents, but encourages us to bring our nanny too to teach her some exercises. There is a waiting list there but if you can tell them that you can come with no problem should there be a cancellation, you can jump up the list quickly. We had several assessments- one for speech and language that went over two sessions, another with the educational psychologist ( she was *excellent*- her name is Marie if you want to see her) as well as getting a hearing test then an appointment with the audiologist to rule our hearing problems. About a year ago we did a course at Kids First by the Hanen centre called It Takes Two to Talk which was also good. It was an 8 week course for parents and carers that also included three sessions for the child. It was extremely interesting. I'm not sure if they still offer it as the facilitators need to be authorised by Hanen. How old is your DD? Gorobattie- my three year has 'homework' exercises set by his Speech therapist and OT using an iPad. They are mainly sound and phonic games for speech and games involving accurate fine motor for occupational therapy. The apps are either free or 99cents and are amazing. If you were to see me in a doctors surgery you would almost be 100% to see him with an iPad or my iPhone playing his 'games'. Honestly if a child started school nowadays without basic IT skills they would be behind the eight ball. Little less judging hey?
