Thank you so much everyone for your help - I am finding out a lot more about Al Ain - it looks fresh and if it is away from the bustle and bling, then that is fine by us! All we have to do is negotiate salary and extras with the school - it is a bit of a drop but we figure if the lifestyle is better, then it is worth it. Hopefully see some of you in Al Ain!

Oh Neamhai - I am thinking of you and your family and hope you are rallying round each other. No news on our visas although my husband has now been told that with Hajj, nothing will be done soon and he won't even be able to come home at half term to see us :( am gutted.

Sorry to hear the accommodation is bad. My LSh long suffering husband was put in to a hotel on arrival. It was basic but clean. He searched high & low for an apartment before I arrived & was disappointed with standards. Obviously anything on a compound is at a premium. I went to a hotel & satyed there for a month. In which time we found a great apartment on a very small compound. Its got a small pool & small gym. Which is all we need. Its all kept clean & is relatively modern. We do have power cuts but that could be a general Saudi problem . We don't have kids with us all grown up. So that makes the transition easier( or does it ?) Ask Your husband to gently nudge the company regarding your visa. We know mine could have been completed much sooner. So now its always a case of being proactive. Don't lose heart over the accommodation .I believe you can find better its a matter of having the time to do so. I realise with kids that isn't what you want to hear. But We have been blessed to get the apartment we have now. In the hotel I felt like I was a prisoner. Im still at home returning next week. My brother died unexpectedly on Saturday so going to London Wednesday for the funeral Thursday back to Riyadh. Pity you aren't coming to Riyadh you would have a willing & able baby sitter. ( Then there isn't much to do) Anywhere you go you can mostly take your kids & I like that aspect . God bless Oh Neamhai I am so sorry to hear your news - I haven't checked back here for a while - I feel bad that you took the time to reply and I have only just read it. My thoughts are with you and I hope you and your family are surrounded by much love and support.

Thank you so so much Neamhai My husband is stuck in appalling accommodation....and waiting for his medical before his iqama is processed....I am dreading a long wait - my daughter is itching to start school and I just want to get started on our lives together! Those meat products are not a problem for us really - we did without in Qatar - but the bad accommodation has disappointed us greatly.

Thanks so much for your reply Kaydee I wonder why it is so quiet on this forum? Am relieved to hear there is Carrefour etc. in KSA - used it in Qatar so at least the supermarket will be familiar! Tampons not available?? Hubby leaves for Jeddah on Fri so will send him out with loads and bring some with me too - customs will be confused if they open his bags!! How daft is it to worry about Marmite....my toddler is obsessed with it though! The lack of oink products does not worry me - we missed it a bit but not agonisingly - turkey bacon was okay. Now all I have to do is get my visa sorted out. Do you know if I can come in on a visitor visa and when iqama comes through for hubby, proceed from there?

Hi Neamhai Thank you so much for replying and for your invaluable advice - I shall def pack a potato masher! Luckily we are not too worried about fancy cheese - I will miss mince though - will follow your lead and buy a mincer - at least then you know what goes into it! My husband is panicking about the absence of ***-related food...as is my daughter - beef bacon is probably one of the nastiest things I have ever eaten! Again, thank you so much for replying - it is very quiet on this forum!

Thanks for your help - I got really ripped off big time! I went 2 days before visa was due and the man you see to get your ticket said he did not feel like giving any more visas that day - it was 10.30!!! When I challenged him he laughed in my face. So the next day I went to Hamad where you can get them done too - who knew?. The woman behind the desk first refused to believe I had a British passport and then fined me qr600 for being 1 day overdue for my visa and my infant son's visa...I pointed out that Feb only has 28 days so I was still within the time limit but again, she laughed and said if I didn't pay the fine she would not issue a visa. I was so angry I burst into tears - how embarrassing.....all I can say is that if you look oriental, you get treated like a 3rd class citizen. My husband went nuts. I am glad I managed to talk him out of storming over there - it would not have been pretty..

Hi My husband has been offered a job in Jeddah but has been told that he needs to go back to the UK to get his visa etc. for KSA. Is this correct or can the application be done at the Saudi embassy in Doha? We just want to avoid any unnecessary expense if it can be done from here. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hi everyone - my husband has been offered a job at JP and G School. We will be moving in July with our two children aged 1 and 13 - yes, a bit of a gap....! The school have said my husband needs to go back to the UK to get his visa for KSA. Is that correct? Surely it could be done at the KSA embassy in Doha? It seems a huge expense otherwise. Also, I wondered if anyone can shed some light on where teachers at this school are housed. We have been told it will be on a compound very close to the school but having been given the runaround before in the Middle East regarding accommodation, I am a bit wary. Also abayas - should I get one before coming to Jeddah and will my daughter need one too? This job is a curve-ball - not part of our "plan" but if it all falls into place, it should be good. Thanks in advance.

My husband has started work at a horrendously dodgy school and has been offered another job in Qatar. He has been in the bad job for 4 weeks and has not yet signed a contract. His RP is due in a few days. If he does not sign the contract, will he need an NOC from the school to work in Qatar? Or once his RP is through, is he basically at the mercy of the school's owner? Has he been sponsored yet? blood test, visa approval etc? He came in on a work visa and has had all tests etc. The main reason we wnat to move employer is that they have put us in such dire accommodation and refuse to do anything. We have no hot water - have not had since we came 5 weeks ago - with a baby and kids, this is not fun, only 1 bathroom works, and there is the most awful loud banging on the roof from broken water pumps all night - the baby can't sleep and neither can we. The kids at the school are ok - even the badly behaved ones have their redeeming features but my husband is a science teacher, has no lab or an interactive whiteboard.....I could go on and on!

Thank you. Think it has just hit me that nothing is easy when you are away from home. So used to just popping out for a pint of milk or walking the dog etc when fed up. Have already been to a step class and am going to Jones on Sunday and have met a woman from home but think today was just a blip. Sure things will get easier and it's a comfort to know others have gone through the same. I have the luxury that I will be travelling back and forth back home so will end up with the best of both worlds!!! X Hi Mollydolly - I hear you totally - we have been here 10 days and am slowly getting used to it. The best way to find my way around was to find a reputable driver and get him to drive me to the various malls, supermarkets, souk, corniche etc and I was able to get my bearings. I don't know where you are living but walking was also a brilliant way of familiarising myself. I live in Al Sadd so plenty of small shops, 2 malls and food shops, so popping out for supplies is not daunting anymore. I am going to brave it and go to Dohamums next Tues - scary if you don't know anyone, but apparently great once you do. Best of luck and we may meet at Dohamums! Doha is a pretty small place - just very sprawling!

Can he explain what it is he is scared of? Maybe use a star chart - when he gets a certain amount of stars, he gets a prize. This would only work if he can explain what he is scared of and you can assure him he will be ok. Has anything happened recently that may have triggered this - like a family member going away or something at school? Hope it gets better - it is awful when your kids are scared and unhappy.

Hi! My name is Laura, I'm quite new to Doha too, just over 3 months. I've got a 3 year old daughter and my husband is a teacher at Doha British School. I do work as well at school, as a teacher assistant. Have read about your accommodation situation, and we are in the same boat. We live in a temporary accommodation until the school will sort out a permanent one. I don't drive either but would love to meet up. Laura x Hi Laura It would be lovely to meet up - where are you living? We are in Al Sadd, just down from Kia garage and off c ring road. Are you on fb? I am Lin SK Brown

Thank you for your advice - The school have refused to move us to the block where all the other teachers live - but we have managed to get the hotel to let us move apartments. The new place is slightly better - not much but no holes in the wall and broken doors etc. We will just have to make do and mend - and hope this does not cloud our view of life here as it seems such a brilliant place to live. I suppose I will have to invest in a car once I know where I am actually going - at the moment my knowledge is limited to bits of Al Sadd and Villaggio Carrefour! I hope you all had a fantastic christmas - hopefully I may meet some of you at Doha mums or the Tuesday group.

Thank you so much for all your advice - it makes me feel so much better - we do feel that we are settling in a bit, although waiting for news on another apartment (if there is one). I am mainly concerned as my 12 yr-old daughter will be arriving after christmas and I would hate to see her face drop - and she is the kind of kid who would try and cover up her disappointment, poor thing. Christmas day by the pool is just what we need, so hopefully things will look up. I am going to try to get to the next Doha mums morning - hopefully then I will be able to meet some like-minded ladies and feel more at home.

Hi guys Please be careful of what you read online regarding schools. Most reviews are written by miffed parents - it is very unlikely that a happy parent would go online to comment - most comments are parents venting! In Qatar it is common for parents to get upset about the smallest issue. Most comments are no subjective and tend to be written in the heat of the moment. The theory in Qatar is that if you are paying fees then everything should be perfect.....the Newton schools are having teething issues, esp the Lagoon one as it is expanding at the moment. The reason I know this is my husband is starting work at Lagoon in Jan as a secondary Chemistry teacher. He has scrupulously researched the integrity if the school, talked to old and new teachers etc. He would not move us halfway across the world to take a job in a crappy school. My 12 yr-old daughter has just finished at one of the top fee-paying schools in the UK and will be starting at NIS Lagoon in Jan too. I hope you are successful in finding a school for your children - a good education is worth fighting for.

NEmom, give me the exact name of your formula, I ll check up if it is avaliable here. Stupid to carry the formula from the uk, here there are kids intolerant for lactose as well. There s a solution for them! marykar - you are so very kind - I use SMA lactofree formula - I know I could switch to soya but it takes awful and has so much more sugar in it - probably to mask to taste! I am going to bring some with me but have visions of being told to open them at customs and taste each one!

Thank you soo much for all your advice - I must sound like a paranoid alcoholic - I assure you I am not - moving with a baby is so different than without - the sheer amount of kit for starters! I am definitely going to join Doha Mums and someone recommended The Tuesday something club.....lol. I am pretty resourceful but I always love advice from those who have experienced things first hand - at least Doha sounds a brilliant place - we were going to be posted to KSA....I don't think I would have made it out of the airport without offending someone or causing a diplomatic incident... I hope to meet up with some fun people when we arrive - things have been dire recently and it will be great to start living again and not just existing! My husband has been offered a secondary chemistry job at NIS Lagoon - He is passionate about his subject and although we have read some pretty awful reviews, we are just going to see for ourselves. It is a great chance to experience a different culture, soak up the sun and check out expat life! See you at Doha mums!

Hi All -I am moving to Doha next week as my husband has been offered a teaching job - we have only had 3 weeks and it has all been a hectic nightmare! I have a 12 yr-old daughter and an 11 month old son and am starting to panic. We have not been told where we are living - just that it is a 3 bed, furnished apt and daft as it may sound, I would feel better if I had a vague idea of what to expect. I have just handed my notice in and am going to be a stay-at-home mum to start with. Things I am panicking about are.... 1. Food shopping without a car - but with a baby, a pram and a carseat.... 2. Baby formula - son is lactose intolerant... 3. Making friends - was an army wife in a previous life so made friends easily but for some reason this time feels different. 4. This a dumb one but still worried - have been told if you look oriental, you get a hard time - I am originally Thai but adopted and brought up as an expat Brit....is this rumour about 2nd class citizens true and will I get in trouble if I am less than receptive to this attitude? lol - I am likely to lamp someone if they are racist! 5. Daft too - availability of the contraceptive pill - do you need to be poked and prodded before you can get the pill and can it be bought OTC. And lastly, I do not really drink but for some reason, now that I am getting ready to move, I seem to be craving the vino..... Hopefully my fears are totally unfounded and life will be way better than over here in the UK - I am currently so cold, everything hurts! I am also excited, don't get me wrong - it is an adventure - any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated.
