Do you have insurance? I had an accident a couple of years ago and needed surgery. My doctor then referred me for physiotherapy and therefore I was able to claim back the fees on my insurance. They key to it was my doctor's referral letter, I wouldn't have been able to claim the money back for the physio without it. Good luck.

I had this kind of problem for quite a few years. Then last year I saw Dr Carol LeCart in DHC (Tel: 04 362 4711). She prescribed antibiotics and two different ointments and recommended that I use Cleanance by Avene facial wash....and I have been acne free for a year!

The Well Woman Clinic is really good, I see Dr Shereen Habib (British trained) but I hear all the doctors there are good. Tel: 04 332 7117. Dr Shereen referred me to a good dermatologist - Dr Carol LeCart (Belgium trained) who sorted out my acne problems. Tel: 04 362 4711

There are loads, you can probably look at past posts on this site or Time Out. 3 of my favourites are: Bubblicious at the Westin is amazing! Great for adults and kids, but expensive. Al Muna at the Mina Al Salam is good, kids can also feed the turtles. You can use Entertainer vouchers too. Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel is good for adults and kids and pretty good value. Have fun!

We got some about 2 years ago near the Dubai Camel Racing Club on Al Ain Road (E66) - google it, there's a website and directions. Once you turn off the main road you head down a small road to the club itself, we found a stall selling camel saddles, they were AED 100 each.

We went to Karumba in the Maldives about 4 yrs ago, it was a great place to take young children. The water before you get to the reef is so shallow and warm - perfect for children and lots of interesting fish to interest them even in the shallow water. We did a glass bottomed boat ride and there is also fish feeding from the jetty. We only had 4 days there and we didn't get bored at all even though there's not much to do, not sure if it would get boring if you went for longer...

Dr Heather Eade at Mediclinic Dubai Mall is an Alternative Medicine Specialist/Naturopath. She's Canadian. I haven't been to see her personally, but have heard her talk regularly on Dubai Eye radio, she seems good. If I ever decide that I need to see a naturopath, it would be her!

Congratulations! Have a look at: www.gov.uk/overseas-passports There's a step by step guide and an application form , including a guide about photos and what is acceptable as they're very fussy these days! (Photo shop at Park & Shop, Al Wasl Rd, next to Baskin Robbins is very good). The whole process takes 6 weeks. Good luck!

Think we must have been at a different event....just awful. Can't believe they're charging AED 60 each to get in, then all there was to do was go shopping or eat/drink....We could go to the mall for free and see all the same outlets! The few kids activities that they had were all absolutely packed with massive queues. In the ginger bread house making tent, the French Bakery staff were really hassling the kids to hurry up and push off; I know there were massive queues, but they could have been a bit more subtle about it! The snow from Ski Dubai was just a dirty block of ice by 4pm. JESS Xmas Fayre yesterday was fantastic....free to get in, lots for the children to do and the shopping was very original - beautiful handicrafts rather than the Cheese Cake Factory, Choithrams, M&S, etc that was on offer today. Fair play to the organisers though, it must be a fantastic money spinner! There were hundreds of people there, all of whom paid to get in, plus all the traders who presumably had to pay a fee too.....I'm obviously in the wrong business!!

We have an iPad 2 and an iPad mini. I much prefer the iPad mini, especially for iBooks, it's a similar size to a Kindle but you can do so much more with an iPad. Fits nicely in my handbag and is very light. The children watch UK TV programmes on the iPad sometimes and probably the iPad 2 is better for that due to the larger screen. But you can still watch TV on the Mini without straining your eyes. So it really depends what you need it for. The Mini is a good price, I got mine a few weeks ago for AED 1500 on Jado Pado. They delivered it 3 hrs after I ordered it!

Not sure if they still do it, but Margaux used to do a great Ladies Night on Tuesdays...views of the fountains and unlimited bubbly! You can either drink in the bar or book a table for dinner and have your free drinks served at your table whilst watching the fountains...perfect! Also like the Mango Tree (Thai) or the Rivington Grill.

I would go and see a different doctor and get a second opinion, might not be an allergy? I took my son to the doctor recently and his persistent cough turn out to be bronchitis, after a couple of days on antibiotics he was much better and the cough has almost gone.

I used a guy called Anthony 050 754 8167 who was pretty good. The first time he came to quote in the morning and came back at 5pm the same day and did the job there and then. I had bought the fabric in Ace, but I think he could supply it if necessary. The second time I called him, he was busy and put me in touch with his friend 052 911 1789 (didn't get his name) that time it was a bigger job (a repair) and the guy took it and brought it back after a week, he also did a good job.

Never seen it in Boots. Will be stocking up when I go back to the UK this summer!

I queued for 40 mins at Etisalat MOE with a query about my bill. I was told that they don't hold any billing data on their computers apart from the month in question. Shame the employee who asked me the nature of my query as I was queuing couldn't have told me that.... Anyway, they directed me to the Etisalat HQ building near the Dubai Mall (between SZR and Al Murooj Rotana). Much, much better! The staff really seem to know their stuff. Don't let the scary queues put you off, when I went it was packed but there's a ticketing system and actually I only waited for 20 mins.

On my son's days off from nursery, we used to go to a great playgroup at the church in Jebel Ali, I think it's on 3 days a week. Really cheap, includes snacks for the kids, tea/coffee for the mums. There were pre-school children of all ages there, because although a lot of children go to nursery here, not all of them go everyday and tend to go to playgroups on their days off from nursery, especially when it's hot. I think there are other similar playgroups at other locations in Dubai? Failing that, just about every mall has a soft play centre and the parks are excellent (although too hot to go really between end Apr - Oct) If you decide you do want to go the nursery route, can thoroughly recommend Little Land in Umm Suqeim, my son loved it there. The staff are amazing. Good luck with the move!

I have a Gro Anywhere Blackout Blind by The Gro Company that my son no longer uses. You can stick it on most windows/window frames, it has suction pads. Dimensions 130cm by 198cm. Used it his in bedroom and took it when we went away to stay in hotels, with relatives, etc. It's very good as no light can get in round the sides or top/bottom. I purchased it in the UK for approx AED 150, it's still in very good condition, happy to sell for AED 100. If you're interested, call me. Zero five zero nine four three five one seven six

Kings' Dubai are supposed to be opening 2 new huge schools, so should have plenty of places?? One will be in Nad Al Sheba, the other in Al Barsha. Also heard there's a new primary school opening in Victory Heights which is British curriculum. Good luck! edited by SusieSue on 29/03/2013

I know what you mean about Dragonmart, but the bead shops are incredible, literally thousands of beads! But if you really can't face it, then I would second roysie's advice about Fida and Creative Minds, but pretty good, but nowhere near as much choice as Dragonmart.

We moved here 3 years ago & managed to get into a British curriculum 'outstanding' school because at that time, not sure if it's the same now, but there used to be a cut off date of 18 Jan after which all waiting lists were cleared of children living in the UAE and were only open to children applying from outside the Emirates. We had hit the same brick wall as you, but as a result of this government ruling we got offered 2 places within 2 weeks! Might be worth checking with the KHDA whether this ruling is still in place....Good luck.

We stayed in the Crowne Plaza in Muscat last Feb, it was great and very family friendly. Fab beach and nice pool, table tennis, pool, badminton, etc. Interconnecting rooms, camel soft toys for the kids. We used Entertainer Vouchers - pay for one night, get second night free, they let us use 3 vouchers (one room for us, interconnecting room for kids, another room for the inlaws)

We stayed in the Marina Bay Sands, great but absolutely huge (2nd biggest hotel in the world?) I've heard check in/check out can take forever, but we had no problems. The roof top pool is absolutlety amazing! We also stayed in the Holiday Inn on Orchard Rd which was fab! Much cheaper than the Marina Bay Dands and in a much more central location. We have 3 children and it was very child friendly. Great interconnecting rooms, kid's section in the dining room, close to everything. Seem to remember there was a laundry behind the hotel where we got a huge bag of washing done for approx AED 35.

I have used shop in Satwa on Plant St, on the ground floor of the Centro Centre corner of 8a Street, tel: 04 345 3448. They will come and measure up and then hang the curtains for you. About Dhs 1000 for a pair of curtains....quite expensive? But good quality. I have also used a guy called Rafi tel: 050 657 5646, he covered my sofas, but also does curtains/blinds. Very cheap - and quality is good, but he can be a bit hard to get hold of. He didn't show up the first time he he was supposed to come and quote, then he turned up a few days later unannounced! But once he'd been round and seen I was serious, he was always very punctual after that.

Must admit I was in two minds about whether to bother getting kid's ID cards, but kept hearing on the radio that all children had to be registered by 1st Oct, this was then extended to 3rd Oct. Then PRO in company DH works for confirmed it's now law. Dhs 20 per day fine for not registering....allegedly!! But not many people that I know have bothered. Another Top Tip - take child's Birth Certificate! No mention of this on government website but they do need it.

Jumeirah is great for families, would definitely recommend it. Another consideration is schools, when we moved to Dubai 2 years ago, everyone gave us the same advice.....Pick the school first and then choose the villa in relation to the school. It was good advice, at one stage I was picking up from school at 12.30, 1.30 and 2.30pm! So the fact that we're 5 minutes drive from school really helped!

Lloyds Bank in the UK used to offer free travel insurance for people of a certain age, have to open an account with them but my parents thought it was worth doing as they have history of heart problems/stroke etc. Not sure if Lloyds still do it, it's still available for existing customers. My inlaws used an insurance broker to find them a special policy for older people with health problems. Broker came up with quite a few options for them.

A friend told me it's free to hire Safa 2 Park, lovely for younger children - playgrounds, sandpits, lots of shade. Might be too hot at the moment, but in a few weeks it should be cool enough. I think Umm Suqeim Park (opposite Burj Al Arab public beach) is free too.

Hi, I think I have what you're looking for! Is it the sun/star clock? I bought one this summer in the UK for my son as a lot of my friends rave about them. My son is 4 yrs and I think he's too old for it, he gets up in the night and unplugs it!! If you have a younger, less devious child(!) I'm sure it would work. If you'd like it I'm willing to sell it for AED 100. Bought it in mid August, so still in very good condition. My phone no is *** *******. edited by SusieSue on 23/09/2012
