Hello there, I'm moving from an independant villa.. I am sick of the "fix it yourself" policy and looking forward to having a pool and a gym just next door. I've been showed the Y village.. which I LOOOOOVED.. however, our employer usually rents villas (at least 30) from a compound and then we get to take our pick.. & their negotiations with the Y village failed :( was disappointed :( NOW.. I saw the "Oriental Villlage" at Al-Azyziyah.. very close to Aspire.. I liked it.. it's not perfect.. but it's still better than the gazillions of villas I checked out.. and the pool and gym are quite awesome... some details inside the villa ticked me off,(kitchen stove..etc.. ) but I'm thinking I can live with it.. Soooooooooooo,,, anyone out there living there??! do you like it? should I stay away??! Thank you ladies for ANY reply

My daughter is at Sherborne, and we love it so far! I find it more challenging than the School she was at in the U.S. She definitely learned more in a short time(moved in the middle of the year). I can see her improve in Maths, dramatically! She also loves the after school activities! The teacher is so nice, and excelllent with the communication with parents! My daughter's school in the U.S was considered the best in the district, yet I found that Sherborne beat it academically! The only thing I miss about the school there that it was actually close to our house, and I could pop up whenever I wanted! The building here is BIG compared to her school in the U.S and far better! of course compared to other schools here, it's not that good. But they are planning to move to a new building in 2013, and hopefully we would still be here at the time! They held several meetings with parents to ask about opinions of what to have in the new building, and so far many of the requests are being considered! They like to involve parents in everything.. and I'm thinking the school is improving year by year, sincei it's new.. BTW.. I read somewhere that Sherborne.. and International School of London were considered the best schools in Doha.. to be fair I don't know what they were relying on with the voting,,,

I have done that, because I refused to move by myself with the kids! the family visa took too long, so we asked them if we could just come and get our tourist visa upon arrival(We have an American Passport). And that worked, we had to extend it once. And then we got our family visa! I don't think that would be a problem. but, my advice ask your Husband's employer if they are ok with that, just in case because that's what we did, and they were totally ok with that, especially that they will be paying for your tickets or even booking them!

We went on a Saturday, a couple of weeks ago.. (not sure if it was expats' day back then) but there were Qataris at the time.. I noticed that people chose to dress differently without anyone objecting.. So, I saw 3 women in bikinis, women with bathing suits and shorts, women with some kind of modest swimming suits.. and A LOT of men with speedos.. yikes! it was a fun day! I am not a big swimming fan, so I didn't bring anything for swimming, and really regretted it! it was so tempting. They have about 4 rides for grown ups.. and then the pirate land, the wave pool and the lazy river.. they also had a regular pool with a bar!! oops no Alcohol there! lol... oh.. and many new rides are opening up.. but just not yet! the kids loved it! more than Katara beach. Well, each one is nice in it's own way!

about Doha British Montessori School.. (btw.. they are dropping the "montessori" because they don't actually adopt the montessori way anywas..) I have heard some mixed reviews! some of them really really bad.. and some of them happy with it.. and that's why I decided to pass! didn't want to risk it.. because my daughter was going through a hard time due to the transition from the U.S and didn't want to make it more stressful for her by transferring to a school she MIGHT be happy with.. as for Sherborne, (or any other school) we called up many schools during the year, since we moved during 2nd semester, and explained for them our situation... and we got spots in almost all the ones we wanted her to be in! I'm not sure if it was luck or was it just the timing! we decided on Sherborne because many collegues had their kids there and love it.. you can look up those International school of London(i've heard it's really good) even top rated by SEC... and Newton British school.. I have heard some campuses are better than others.. good luck!

I've heard some good and some bad about Parkhouse.. research it on Qatarliving.com.. there is also Compass school.. I honestly didn't even go near Compass because of the fees! 60,000 yikes! btw.. American school of Doha is awsome, too.. I personally liked Sherborne more, but I know many who would beg to differ!

Our daughter goes to Sherborne Qatar.. and so far we LOVE IT! they have a lot of after school activities.. the communication between parents and the staff is excellent.. and the teaching is awsome..

I agreed with Kiwi and apparently many others, including the creater of this thread.. because she mentioned that it's very very very annoying to carry on with a conversation while you are being "served"! either in a hairsalon, a supermarket or any kind of store! no matter what the language is.. it's not part of "customer service" to totally ignore your customer! But we all know that customer service is non existent in the ME.. customer satisfaction is invisible, too! However, Kiwi and (many of us) noticed that some people were also complaining about the conversation being carried out in a different language! and that's when we diagreed, because we can't expect others to switch to our language, just because we walked into the room! I know it's annoying to FEEL that they are talking about you.. but let them talk.. so WHAT!!!?? btw.. I have seen many many Qatari people who are ordering their meal in English.. and then complaining about it! I have read many articles about how they walk in their own malls, not being able to buy anything without taking an English lesson! Qataris are annoyed by the fact that English is this close to becoming the official language in Qatar.... try going to Turkey.. and try speaking English there.. you're out of luck!!!! I know English is pretty popular anywhere... and let's be grateful for that! edited by nasimindoha on 12/04/2011 edited by nasimindoha on 12/04/2011

I just felt it was very very outdated.. the bathrooms were yellow and green ...eck.. I was told some villas are more renovated than others.. but I didn't like the ones I saw! so I passed and went for a newly built and never lived in before indpenedent villa.. and love it so far..see tell your hubby to keep that info in mind! edited by nasimindoha on 29/03/2011

I have to be clear on something.. people of all nationalities cut the line when I was in the Festival, and I'm half arab and could figure out from their accents(if they were arab).. so that includes Egyptians, Palestinians, Qataris, indians, philipines.... etc.. etc.. so please don't generalize.. I just think that.. if the law was enforced several times one way or another.. the people will abide eventually! edited by nasimindoha on 27/03/2011

oh maaaan.. I wanted to take the kids and see the "secrets of the sea", we arrived an hour before and they told us it was sold out!! decided to do it some other time! how the **** are we going to get tickets for that?? saw the line for the "seals show" and decided to pass.. btw.. we went to the aquarium the other day.. the people there were idiots.. apparently if you have a small space in front of you, that gives people permission to cut through and stand in front of you!!! after that we went for a bite, waited at the front of the line infront of the counter 15 minutes until I got the attention of the cashier, while others were handing out money from over my shoulder!!! why do people think it's ok to touch or lean on you here! there are far more crowded areas and events in the U.S(lived in NY for a while) than here in Qatar.. yet everything here seems more Chaotic! even bathrooms!

regarding the article on Bahrain... there really seems to be a threat from Iran!! if you have been following the news, every now and then the president of Iran keeps commenting on the revolution there.. he keeps commenting on the events which he never did for Egypt or Tunisia!! he said "outsiders(the troops from Gulf Countries) won't be able to calm the revolution in Bahrain"... it is obvious that he have someone playing from the inside of Bahrain.. as much as I want Bahrain to get their democracy, the aparent meddling of Iran shuts me up as a proof that it's not the demands of the people, but the demands of Ahmadi Najad!

I read in the Marhaba Guide once, that swimwear and Bikinis are acceptable only on Beaches and Pools.. and then it states that you should dress modestly anywhere else! so law doesn't mind... as long as you don't mind the staring! which is really annoying!

1200 is great!! however, if you have guests over, you certainly should pay her a bonus.. you should provide her with toilettries too... about food.. our maid used to use whatever we had in our fridge and pantry to cook her own or eat from same as our meals if she wishes to do so.. so I guess it's optional... you could give her an allowance to call home once a week for a certain amount of minutes.. one more thing.. we used to give her gifts during holidays(Eid, she was a Muslim).. sometimes the gift would be money, or whatever she wishes for.. her room should be ready to live in... so that included radio/tv.. etc... I warn you though, the first 3 months are going to be torture since it's her first time working.. some of them come from remote villages, and they barely know anything about civilization.. so be patient, it will take time.... and also make sure to teach her hygeine...

when we came here to Qatar we thought about coming here for Good.. or at least that's what we decided.... I decided on a British school for many many reasons.. first.. there is only one "good" American school in Doha.. and I eliminated it because I wanted my daughter to learn Islamic studies and Arabic too(we are a Muslim)..both were not available at ASD.. or at least to the level I desired.. second.. I grew up studying in a British Curriculum school.. and I truly think that it was much stronger than my daughter's school in the U.S.. I've heard of many friends who had to make their kids repeat, when they were transferred from an American School to a British School.. of course I'm not generalizing here.. I know that (since Curriculum is different from one district to another in the U.S) then some schools are better than others.. and of course I can't forget that American schools are waaaaay better than any other country's schools.. and they ARE FREE! I am truly grateful to American schools.. but I do think when I have a choice I choose "British schools"... third.. I like the strictness of British schools. you know uniform.. discipline.. politeness.. etc.. etc.. I don't know if it's just me.. but I truly admire the idea of a school being strict but fun.. because it's hard sometimes to balance the two! I found that in Sherborne! I also like the idea of seperating girls from boys in advanced classes.. because I read several studies stating that performance of students is improved in one gender classes.. (I'm not sure if I will stick with this idea forever.. it's too early).. now my question for you is.. which is better.. IB or BritishCurriculum ? if I move somewhere else later in life.. should I consider one over the other?? college wise.. should I choose one over the other? thanks..! edited by nasimindoha on 07/03/2011
