I would agree with Daza, Many parents put their children into FS 1 here for the reason that they may not get a place in FS 2 or Year 1 later on as the classes will already be full. It can feel like a bit of a gamble if you don't take an FS 1 place in a school (if you are offered one). Its also a great way for the schools to get you in one year earlier and paying fees!!

I've taken my mum and my sister in law and both loved it. It is such an iconic building and they loved the fact they got to go in. It is expensive but the service is great, food lovely and a really enjoyable afternoon. Seat at the window is a must. Book it or get there early !

Have you tried any of the new schools opening? Metropole in MC, First point in the Villa, new Safa School or the new Kings?

I think they are calling it GEMS Metropole Motor City or something similar. My friend went to the Gems Motor City Q&A session earlier this month. He said they indicated they will not have many Western teachers/ were looking at mainly Indian staff. And what is wrong with that? Your assumption, not mine! I only presume there is a reason why they are targetting Indian teachers. From what i understand the teachers hired so far anyway are 'Western' as i have a friend recently hired. edited by bubbagump1 on 28/04/2014

Talise Spa at the Zabeel Saray is lovely - very large and great facilities. Amara at the Park Hyatt is also great and you get access to the pool which is fab.

We have artificial grass from Dragon Mart and its great. Low maintenance and always looks great. We got them to install it too and it was pretty much hassle free and very quick. One happy customer!

Thanks for all the replies. I don't have a gardener but perhaps i can ask someone who does if their gardener can help me. I'll try ELC and ACE first. Although it sounds like i may have to spend a small fortune in ELC to fill the sand pit!

They had some information days/evenings recently where you could meet the new head. He is British and has been a head in the UK for a number of years. The school will be opening in Sept but i think they are hiring staff at the moment and the school is still being built. I don't think its going to be one of their (GEMs) top end schools, more a 'medium' one like Mungomango said. edited by bubbagump1 on 17/02/2014

Hi Juliana, My little one is nearly 2 and had all vaccinations on the Gov't health card. We did it a our local center (which was not Al Barsha) and it has been great. We always phoned a couple of days before to make an appointment but i'm pretty sure we could have turned up whenever as when we made the appointment we basically got offered any time! It was quick and simple each time, no additional costs each visit, in fact we got free Adol each time in case of fever. The only additional cost was if we wanted the Chicken Pox Vax (i think this was 200dhs) Vaccination program is pretty much the same as private hospitals but if there is an additional vaccination you want you can always make an appointment and pay for this i guess. We got a little card to note all the Vaccinations we had and the next ones due along with the date. They also offer you dental check ups when your little one starts to get teeth. Great service and value in my experience :)

Hi BellaUK I agree with a lot of what TDB has said. 1) Video monitors are great, especially when they start to move around a bit. We didn't have a video one but wish i did :). I wasn't convinced by the sensor pad but i know lots of people like them. 2) Brest pump - do not get a manual, they take forever! But you will need one at some point BF or not just to relieve the pressure! I have a Medela one and it was great. Could plug into the mains or run on batteries so was portable which did come in handy from time to time. 3) travel cots - mattresses are general rubbish on travel cots apart from the Baby Bjorn and Phil and Ted (i think). We have a Baby Bjorn, expensive but a really great cot, great mattress, light and portable. We have used it a lot so i feel i could justify the cost! 4) I find there is a greater selection for toiletries in the UK so would def take a look back home. Here you are very limited but i guess that depends on personal choice. 5) I also had an electric stand alone sterilizer but with hindsight would prob get a Microwave one, smaller and does the same job! 6) Isofix - YES! very handy, especially when you will have 101 other things to do getting in and out of the car. Most cars do now have it but i think Just Kidding will come out to the car park and help you take a look/see if it will fit. Agree with the cream, Muslin's and teething powders ideas from TDB. Clothes and cheaper and nicer in the UK so would get any bits and bobs in the sales if you can. Also my friend when to the M&P in the Dubai Outlet Mall to get her furniture and she seemed to think she got a pretty good deal so maybe worth a look there? Whatever you do have fun! Expensive buying everything but i really enjoyed getting ready for our little one to arrive :) edited by bubbagump1 on 30/12/2013

It is a very personal decision and i think going to see them both is a great idea. I delivered in City hospital with my first and i'm planning to go to City again for my second :) I had a really great experience, could not fault the staff or facilities. good luck making your decision :)

Bugaboo or iCandy if its from birth. Great 'bassinet' option in both and they transfer to a pushchair when they are older. Not a lightweight solution but perhaps you can pick up a cheaper, lighter pushchair later on for travel or quick trips? I have a bugaboo and love it.

Wife of 777, I can totally relate, I have RA and would love to start Yoga/Pilates again but just don’t know if I’m physically able at the moment. Its been really interesting reading about the food elimination others have tried and I’m thinking it may be worth trying this (maybe starting with Caffeine?). I’m not a fan of all the Meds but struggling to find other ways to control my RA Is there still a group in Dubai running for RA?

I have never used one of these agencies that cost you just to get contact details but i've spoken with many who have and they say its a waste of time. They get contact details for people who have jobs, or candidates that are not suited to their needs (limited English, not good with kids, things they specified they wanted). Better off looking in Dubizzle, word of mouth etc.

Any ideas of where to go for a nice lunch on a Friday? Just me and DH for some 'quality' time without the kids. So somewhere different (ie not a coffee shop!), but doesn't have to be fancy/expensive.
