I think he's very good too, he has a nice, calm manner. I've only had cleanings done with him but my husband has had crowns and was happy with the results. I would definitely go to him if I needed any other work doing.

I went along with our baby and DH (he's American, I'm not) - from what I recall, which is not a lot as the baby was about 2 weeks old at the time, it was straightforward. As long as you have all the required paperwork, if I remember one part is about proving that you have lived in the States for the period they request, I think we took DH's old school/college transcripts, tax transcripts and payslips. Make sure your documents are all organised nicely so you can find what they ask for as they don't like to waste time. I don't remember any interview as such, the officer asked about the hospital where I gave birth but I thought she was just making conversation! The passport only took a few days I think, the social security number took a while longer. edited by Beany on 01/11/2013

I just watched the trailer after seeing these posts and then all the electric went out...probably caused by our dodgy oven tripping the fuse but now I'm scared! I really have no business watching these kinds of things (had nightmares as a kid for weeks after watching a Paul Daniel's Christmas special)...I was thinking it would be a good spooky Hallowe'en film but I think it's literally too close to home for me! BubblingCreek, I simultaneously want and don't want to hear more details...

Depends on your budget but Sir Bani Yas Desert Islands would be pretty cool for kids - especially this time of year as you could do lots of outdoor activities. Bit of a journey to get there, though. Otherwise, RAK if you want a shorter drive (agree with other posters, the Hilton resort is family-oriented and right on the beach), or Fujairah (Rotana is good). edited by Beany on 31/10/2013

We got one for our bed from a shop in Karama (totally forgotten the name, maybe it'll come up with some googling). It was called Allerzip or something, it completely encases the mattress and seals with a zip. Not sure if they do cot-sized (assuming that's what you need) but maybe it could be adapted. Have you also tried an air purifier machine in his bedroom? edited by Beany on 29/10/2013

Coming from England - no, it's not cold at all! I have only worn one short padded jacket, and then only in the desert at night. Otherwise jumpers/cardigans/long sleeved tops or a pashmina would do in the evenings when it gets cooler. That said, I wouldn't necessarily get rid of all your winter gear, you might want to visit somewhere colder during the winter months e.g. Europe, Istanbul. You can find some warmer clothes in the shops here but there's less choice and they're more expensive.

Some fish can contain high levels of mercury, and too much mercury can harm a developing fetus. It's particularly big fish which are top predators and eat other fish, like sharks - these types of fish are also long-lived so they accumulate more mercury. But there are other types of fish which have lower levels and are safer to eat in reduced quantities. Have a look here: http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Mercury_in_fish . You don't need to stop eating it altogether.

Sorry to read this. Is your sister in the UK? If so, the Macmillan cancer nurses were a big help when my mum was having chemo, as someone to talk to as much as anything else, they also helped with accessing financial support. They come out to visit you at home, maybe there are similar nurses in other countries. Mum also saw an aromatherapist which helped her to relax and feel calmer between treatments (probably best to try it in the days just before the next dose if she's nauseous after the chemo).

Just a couple more thoughts (my son has a lowered immune system so I am always thinking about this): - Second the probiotics, you can get blends specially for kids - Consider a blood test to look for Vitamin D deficiency (you could do a full blood count at the same time to make sure iron is ok etc) - Vit D appears to be important for immunity and people often have low levels here despite the sunshine, sunblock/spending the summer months indoors may be to blame - Think about an air purifier for your son's room as well as getting the a/c cleaned - Our whole house gets the flu vaccine as soon as a new one is released each year, I believe it's helped a lot in avoiding the really bad bugs - This might sound a bit hippy but I use essential oils in a diffuser at home as some are known to kill viruses ( see the ones in this blend: http://heritageessentialoils.com/plague-defense.php ) Hope your LO is feeling better soon.

Good to see some other recommendations, it is hard to know where to go. Ruby, you can see the same doctor at Burjeel as they have an appointment system so they will ask which doctor you prefer when you book. I'm not sure about Al Noor, I think it's more of a drop-in clinic but you could call to see when your preferred doctor is on duty. We used to use the German Medical Center which was nice and had one ped so you had some continuity but then they closed abruptly and we have been a bit lost ever since! I know some friends see Dr Eva at Burjeel as mentioned in the other post, and some see Dr Khoury (I think that's his name) at the Advanced Cure Clinic. We are leaving AD in a couple of months so I just see whoever I can get for the moment! Good luck.

New Hannibal next year apparently, they are filming it right now. We just finished watching season 1 last night, I have not quite shaken the feeling that the scary woman might be hiding under my bed...! Think my nerves need a rest before season 2. My niece is the same age, exactly the same problem and also a deep sleeper. She's been checked out physically and nothing's wrong (would agree that this needs doing first though, to rule anything else out). Finally my sister got her in to see a specialist nurse and they are seeing results - main thing is to make sure that the bedroom is completely dark at night which meant taking my niece's nightlight away, keeping the door shut, blackout linings etc. Apparently it is a different hormone which makes the brain react to a full bladder at night and it needs real darkness to be activated. Also, as you've mentioned, my sister has to encourage her to drink more during the day. She is the kind of kid who gets very absorbed in what she's doing and has no time for boring things like drinking water, so it turns out she was drinking almost nothing all day and then 2 glasses of water after dinner. Her bladder is not used to dealing with bigger quantities of liquid and doesn't react properly. They have to 'retrain' her system. They did not mention using alarms although my sister had looked into these before and you can get them on Amazon, she also used to get my niece up during the night and sit her on the loo (she would barely wake up) but this didn't help. edited by Beany on 01/10/2013

Sounds odd but try one of the larger dive centres like Al Mahara. Dive centres all teach Emergency First Response courses (which cover all aspects of first aid including CPR, it's not diving-related) and they may also teach the specific infant version of the course.

For electrical things, we got most from the large supermarkets (Lulu or Carrefour). There's also a large electrical store in the Mina shopping center behind ToysRus. For furniture, I have to admit our place is largely furnished courtesy of Ikea but there are also the Home Centre and Homes R Us stores (more traditional) and The One (more fashionable). If you google them, you can find their locations.

Humans are animals...I think we can learn a lot from our fellow creatures! I don't think either of the situations described are ideal. In one, you have security but it is dependent on someone else and could end at any time on the whim of that person. In the other, happiness will be transient as it's hard to be happy while you're hungry and wondering how the bills will get paid. I don't think humans ever reach the extreme freedom of wild animals any more, unless we think of wandering sadhus or monks, or perhaps the very, very rich...we are all tied to something or someone (job, husband, parents). In my mind, happiness and security are so intertwined that I can't really think of one without the other. The best situation for me would be to own a house with some land so I can be self-sufficient as far as possible and look after my family.

But seriously, if i paid UK tax, i would be fuming that my hard earned money would be being used to feet this thing... I never used to be in favor of the death penalty, but as I get older and as the world gets more and more over-crowded you do start to wonder why some people should get to live while innocents die. This particular one would be no great loss to the gene pool.

I don't know if this would help as it depends on why your girl is waking up but we got the AirWrap bumper after reading about it on here, and it has really made a difference (THANK YOU to whoever recommended it!). Our LO was a pretty good sleeper until he got more active, then he was wriggling around and banging his head or getting arms or legs stuck through the cot bars. We went back to sleeping through most nights with the Airwrap, he snuggles up to it and sleeps on his side. Worth a shot!

In case this is useful - you can buy curcumin (active part of the turmeric) as a supplement to take in powder or capsule form, I don't know if it's available here in any health food shops but I've ordered it online before and had it shipped.

We have struggled with this as doctors tend to come and go. Recently we went to the new Burjeel hospital which was a good experience - it is nice and clean, didn't have to wait long and the doctor was fine. They have several peds, both male and female. If it's just for general illnesses then I would try there, if it's anything more serious/specialised then I would probably go to Mafraq Hospital.

Only radio station I listen to in the car is https://twitter.com/abudhabiclassic . They just played Edith Piaf, which has to be considerably more uplifting than whoever this Thicke person is. I have never been there but we're leaving this year and have been looking at a lot of those 'most liveable cities/best quality of life' tables - Auckland is almost always in the top 10 on international tables, often it's in the top 5. So it must have something going for it! What I really want after living here is to be somewhere with varied natural landscapes, where we can be outside all year round, and have a simpler and healthier lifestyle.

Maybe it made a few of them realise how precious water is and how little you actually require to do the needful though...I lived in a little town once where a truck ran into the mains water supply. It took the government almost 3 weeks to fix it and no-one had running water during that time. Some people from the water village (stilt huts over the sea - they didn't have running water in the first place) gave us bottles of the brackish water they used and I learned that you can shower pretty well using 2 litres only. The town was a touch whiffy by the last week, mind.

Agree with Big Blue, I saw this happen in a friend's marriage, they would literally go for weeks ignoring each other, it's not healthy or productive. You have to get a calm, two-sided conversation going. Is he always on his work phone? My DH used to be like that, curse of the blo0dy Blackberry! I managed to persuade him that his employers don't expect him to work 24 hours a day (this may not be true, of course) and we agreed that he switches it off once he's home unless it's to return an absolutely essential call. I want him to spend the little time each day that he can with our baby son before bedtime. If he needs to call his family or whoever, he can do it afterwards. But honestly, I sometimes like a bit of peace and quiet of an evening myself (within reason), while DH is more sociable...I do occasionally hint that he needs a night out with his mates so I can have some solitude - could you do something one night a week after the baby is asleep to give him a quiet evening while you get to socialize (dance class, yoga, language class, whatever)? Might be a way to meet friends that have similar interests and you won't have to talk about babies the whole time.

I've just started one on Coursera, there's an option within the first two weeks of making it a 'Signature Track' course so you need to do the tests and assessments and it could be counted as a university credit. You get a certificate at the end. It's 39USD for the course I'm doing. Seems really good so far, keeps the brain ticking over at least and something extra to put on your CV...most employers are happy to see evidence of lifelong learning. ETA Don't think Signature Track is available on all courses, is it? edited by Beany on 17/09/2013

I think it's probably just bad luck. I was expecting a tummy full as I got them on my hips as a teenager but I didn't get any during pregnancy. I used Weleda stretch mark oil every day, it's good stuff and I will use it for the next pregnancy but can't really be sure if it made a difference. They will fade in time though, the ones on my hips are now quite old (like me) and they are silvery, not very noticeable. Many women and even men have a few somewhere on their body.
