The only ones I can suggest (but you've probably already tried them) are Ezdan Residences, Somerset West Bay and Adagio Aparthotel (if not, email them rather than relying on the prices on-line). These are the less expensive end of apartments but they are in West Bay rather than walking distance from work for your husband. I'd imagine a hotel stay for 2 or 3 weeks would be tough for the four of you with no kitchen facilities and eating out all the time. Have a look on the major accommodation booking websites and contact the apartments/hotels directly as they do sometimes give better deals, especially for longer stays. Good luck - I hope you find something reasonable. :)

Could it be the 'Rug Man' on al Mirqab Street you're thinking of? The website address is the-rugman.com I can remember going to one of the Ladies groups here a few years ago and he was there giving a talk. He's a real character, his story was interesting and the carpets are beautiful. I especially like the tribal carpets - there's a story behind each one. Edited to add that it may be worth looking in the Oriental Carpet Co. shop on C-Ring too - I bought a lovely carpet from there. Happy browsing :)

rubyblue, thank you for thinking of us. We managed to re-home our wee four month old kitty yesterday but that's all. We've put it off for as long as possible but sadly, DH took a drive to the vets today. He'll have to make another three or four trips over the coming days :( On a brighter note, Cats in Qatar have said that they would manage to find a home in the UK for our gorgeous, blue eyed girl if we fund her travel (no brainer). Unfortunately, with the quarantine regulations, she's not able to travel for 4 months so we are now desperately searching for a foster home. If anyone is willing, or you know someone who is able to look after Daisy for four months, please post. rubyblue, please keep Cats in Qatar in mind for when you want to adopt a kitty. They're not having much luck re-homing at the moment.

I think DH has put off returning home for the last four years because of the cats, yet he still rescued more! I know, they wouldn't have had this extra time if he hadn't saved them but it's just so hard to deal with but I suppose we only have ourselves to blame. Thanks Jonners for your kind words. Yes, new adventure for us but just wish Oz wasn't quite so far away from Scotland! x

One last-ditch attempt... Despite all our efforts we have only had one cat re-homed and she had been in the cage at the vets for a few weeks. We have another two in QVC's re-homing cage which we've paid for two weeks boarding. Please, if you know anyone who would be willing to adopt one of lovely cats (these are not street cats, they've been living in our villa for between 2 and 8 years) reply asap. Sadly, we only have a couple more days before we will have to make some trips to the vets clinic :(

Look for Wholesale Market Street running between Salwa Road and al Waab Street. There's a roundabout half way along it. If you're driving from Salwa to al Waab, take a right at the roundabout (road leads down to al Bustan Street). Take the second road on the right and you'll see a compound at the end of the road (the pool on google maps looks like a deformed clover leaf)!

After 160 views and no replies, I'm so grateful to you goodytwoshoes for taking the time to post. We've already contacted Cats in Qatar and two of our babes have been stuck in the re-homing cages at QVC for a few weeks with no takers. We spoke to Paul yesterday and he said there really was nothing they could do apart from euthanise. However, I've found al Mannai Sam on Facebook and will make contact. Thanks so much x If anyone else has any contacts or ideas, please reply. We're desperate.

Just a gentle bump. Do you know of anyone who could accommodate a friendly outside cat in a yard or garden even? Having no luck with re-homing any of our indoor cats either - any suggestions of where else I could try would be most welcome. :(

I've no experience obtaining one from the UAE but figure it shouldn't be that different from Qatar. Friends who had moved to Oz on a working visa needed police clearance certificates from Qatar and they were able to print off an application form from the Ministry of Interior website. All they needed to provide was copies of the biometric page and cancelled resident visa page in their passport (finger prints were already on the computer from when they registered to get their original rp). So, I tried to look at the UAE Ministry of Interior website for you but it kept showing a message that the URL was incorrect! I came across this page though: http://www.dubaipolice.gov.ae/dp/jsps/content/flat-content.do?contentCode=83824 Scroll down and look at the Procedures and documentations required ... it states that if you are no longer living in the UAE, you need to get a fingerprint record attested by their Embassy. The UAE Embassy in Canberra should be your best bet. Good luck, hope you get it sorted soon. I'm from Scotland too and applied for an Australian permanent resident visa from the Dubai Consulate in February and it's taking forever!!

Sounds like your Dad likes practical presents!! A camera? Anything electronic that you'd find handy?! Personally, I'd choose something sentimental that I could keep. Maybe a piece of jewellery or a quality handbag or a silver photo frame or some crystal (Villeroy & Boch have a sale on in Qatar, maybe in Dubai too?) Or if you don't want something that lasts, then maybe some spa treatments or some kind of day experience or a quality day out that you could enjoy together? I'm sure you'll come up with something! Belated happy birthday and have a wonderful time with your Dad x

I haven't posted this on the pets forum as posters tend to be from Dubai. If I can try and briefly explain our story. My DH has been here for 12+ years and is a huge cat-lover. Whenever he's found a sick or stray kitty, he'd take it home. Although we'd manage to find homes for the odd one, we have ended up with rather a large number of indoor and outdoor cats and we're leaving Qatar for good in a couple of weeks (taking five cats with us) and are desperately trying to find homes for as many as we can. We have had some luck in re-homing but with QAWS and CIQ and numerous other expats trying to re-home cats it's been an uphill struggle. I would be so very grateful if you could spread the word between friends and colleagues to see if anyone could help us by adopting one of our cats. Perhaps someone one would love to have a cat here but doesn't commit as they know they can't take them when they leave Qatar? Of course a forever home would be preferred but even if someone was able to give a cat a year or two or three, it would be better than nothing so we would be happy if you were able to offer a 'for now' home. I'm not trying to guilt-trip people and threaten that if the cats don't get adopted they'll be euthanised. We are responsible people and if we cannot find homes, then yes they will be put to sleep and not thrown out onto the street to fend for themselves but my consolation is that if DH hadn't saved them, they would already have died on the streets so at least they have had extra years and love in their lives. Please post a reply if you would like more information on the cats we have or if you'd like to come and visit. We have a couple of 4 month old kittens and the remainder range from 3 to 10 years. They are vaccinated and neutered (kittens aren't neutered yet) and all domestic short-haired. Thank you for reading

I drive to the local petrol station with my empty bottles, pay 7 riyals to exchange each for full bottles, tip the guy who puts them in my car, drive home and lug the bottles from the car to the kitchen. I've never noticed a delivery guy where we live but if I did, I would gladly pay them 10 riyals (and more.) For 3 riyals extra, you get collection and delivery - a bargain imho ;)

I can't really help with your query as I haven't applied for a working visa but just wanted to wish you luck! I submitted my partner visa application through the Consulate in Dubai on February 27th and was told it could take 9-12 months which has now changed to 12-18 months!! I'm afraid I'm not that impressed with their service - they take around 2 weeks to reply to an email (you can't speak to anyone over the phone, it's just recorded messages.) Friends of mine got a working visa really quickly (within 2 months) but that was because he was transferring from Qatar to Oz with the same Company and it seemed to fast-track or make their application straight forward and I think their application was dealt with in Australia. All I can advise is to apply ASAP - the Oz authorities used to fast-track 'decision ready' applications (ones which had all paperwork submitted and applicants were from 'safe' countries) but apparently that has been abolished as it discriminated against those applicants from 'riskier' countries. So now, they just have a huge back-log... Hope you get your visa quickly!

Zinger, if you already have experience of dogs, fish and turtles then I'm sure you'll easily manage two cats!! Definitely get them spayed/neutered. We had a female that wasn't spayed and every time she was 'in season', she yowled her wee heart out for days on end! Sometimes, male cats can spray (being dominant and to mark the spot as theirs) and some say that neutering them helps to stop this behaviour. Didn't work for two of ours though. Look up Jackson Galaxy's website (he has great advice for problem cats - hopefully yours wont be) but he also gives ideas on how to 'catify' your home so that they feel happy and relaxed and have their own space. I honestly never thought I'd get into cats but they worm their way into your heart! They can be little horrors at times but they have such big (and different) personalities and the great thing is they sleep about 20 hours each day!! Now it's coming into winter, they're great alternatives to hot water bottles to keep you cosy on the sofa!

If you have never owned a cat before, you must undertake some research before adopting - it's a lifetime commitment. The first question you have to ask yourself is if I move to another country will I take them with me no matter what the cost? If the answer is no, then don't adopt. This gives good advice: http://www.petfinder.com/pet-adoption/cat-adoption/cat-adoption-first-30-days/ Vaccinating your cats are to keep them safe from harm - not you! They need PCH which consists of two separate vaccines given 3 weeks apart and a vaccine against rabies. These are annual vaccinations. There's also a treatment for fleas and ticks that you can give them (Frontline) and worming tablets approx. every three months. Providing they use a litter tray and you clean it regularly (you have to scoop their pee and poop out daily), there should be no smell! You can buy corrugated cardboard scratching trays or scratching posts which have sisal rope wrapped around them which should deter them from scratching on furniture etc. There are loads of websites which give advice on cat ownership. If you're prepared to put in the time (for example they need their claws cut, ears checked, groomed if longer haired, played with etc) and money, owning a cat is great fun. I grew up with a dog and never interacted with a cat until I met DH who is cat-mad. Now, I can't imagine not having a cat in the house which is just as well - we're moving to Australia next month and shipping our five cats with us! They're family! Happy Googling and good luck x

Hi Rabbithat, I'm afraid I don't have any experience of them as my DH has been adopting them from wherever he finds them. I am planning to post a thread of my own to ask if anyone can help and adopt one of our lovely cats. We are leaving Qatar for Oz in just over four weeks time (taking five with us) and have several more cats to try and re-home. We currently have three in the re-homing cages at Qatar Vet Clinic (which are real cuties if you want to take a look - 2 at Villagio branch and 1 at Duhail) but due to my DH being such a softy and taking home any waif and stray that he's found over the past 12 years of living here, we still have quite a few at home! Rabbithat, if you or anyone else would like to come and visit our boys and girls, please, please let me know. They are all neutered/spayed and have been vaccinated and are loved dearly. They're indoor cats, although we do have a couple of cats that live outside in the yard which we'd love to find a home for too.

Christmas decorations can be bought quite easily - Mega Mart, BHS, Carefour to name a few. You'll find mince pies and jars of mincemeat in the likes of Mega Mart and Lulu. M&S have advent calendars, Christmas cake, crackers etc. I have heard Christmas songs being played in shops and on the radio too!! We've always had Christmas day at home so can't recommend any particular hotels but I know friends have been to the Ritz and Radisson Blu - loved both. Depends if you have kids or not as I'm guessing some would give better entertainment than others. Some of the hotels also offer 'takeaway' turkey and all the trimmings - again, never tried. Hopefully some more posters will reply with recommendations for hotels. Keep a look out on the hotel FB pages, eventsdoha website, EW website and TimeOut magazine usually do a feature of all the hotels offering Christmas Day lunches/dinners and events over the festive period. They used to have carol singing at the sand dunes but not sure if that was stopped. A few of the hotels (old Marriott for sure) have carols around their Christmas tree when they switch the lights on. If you want to be organised, email or call some of the hotels and get them to put you on their mailing list (eg I get newsletters from the Intercon & the Marriott regularly) All the hotels have New Year events - buffets, dinners, Eve ball, parties etc. I've enjoyed four Christmases here but this year will be completely different! We're moving to Oz so it'll likely be Christmas on the beach & a barbie! I'm going to miss my turkey ;) I'm sure you'll have a great time over the festive season in Doha x

As an expatriate, your husband is not allowed to sponsor a male. You do see ads in the newspapers etc for houseboys but it's illegal to employ them. The only way around it would perhaps be for your husband's company to employ a houseboy for him. If you use the 'search posts' tab and type in property agents and specify the Qatar board, there are previous threads which may give you some info. If I remember rightly, friends of ours who had a male dog here found that they couldn't board him as they all specified that he had to neutered (and he wasn't). I'm not saying that there wont be any male labs 'up to the job' but they might be few and far between! Perhaps the veterinary clinics here may be able to put you in touch with lab owners once you arrive here.

Tasmine, sorry they can't help - their website obviously gives out-of-date info as the test menu definitely had some of the blood tests listed for gluten intolerance. I also remember seeing a poster in reception advertising that they did food allergy blood tests. Was it the main branch you called (Al Nasr, Kinana Street) - this is the one I visited. Hope you manage to find a Dr that can help.

You may like to try Gulf Laboratory - www.gulflab-xray.com They offer a wide range of tests and I'm sure they'd be able to help you (I checked their menu of blood tests on the website and they do offer the ones you would need.) I've only visited them to get a medical done for a migrant visa application but I'm thinking of going back to get a blood test to check out my thyroid! The Doctor and nurses/assistants I encountered were helpful and pleasant and they seemed thorough enough, as I was given two chest x-rays! Good luck

For Australia, I think it would be an easier and quicker process if your DH was able to get a transfer through his company. This happened with friends of ours and the working visa process seemed to be pretty simple and quick and I think it lasts for four years. Once you're in Australia, if you enjoy the life and decide you want to live there permanently, you could then apply for permanent residency within the period of your working visa and if you're within the age range and qualify in your professions, I can't see that it would be a problem. FYI, I'm a Brit and my DH is Australian and I applied through the Consulate in Dubai for a partner visa at the end of February. They've quoted 9-12 months before it is granted even though I'm from a low-risk country and it was decision ready (different visa class than you would be applying for but just to let you know that it doesn't seem to be a particularly fast process!) Much as I love my home country, I'd choose Oz in your shoes. Good luck

I've not had experience - yet - of our cats travelling but we're taking five to Australia this year!! I can't say if the quote's expensive or not but I know friends of ours sent their big dog to Oz and it cost a few thousand. They used Qatar Pet Travel and couldn't speak more highly of Nicky and recommended us to use her company. If I remember rightly, she re-booked the dog on an alternative flight as she'd found a cheaper fare, so she does watch the pennies! They handle imports as well as exports so may be worth getting in touch (they have their own website.)

My housemaid was taking antidepressants (prescribed by her Doc back in Sri Lanka) and was due to run out before she went home. She was on three different tablets and we managed to find two, the third not being available here. We went through a lot of hassle trying to get a prescription (I had assumed we would need one) - seeing a GP at the local HC who then issued a referral to the Psychiatry department ... we finally got the prescription, went to Khulood Pharmacy at Burger King roundabout (the pharmacists there are really helpful) to discover we could buy them over the counter!! Just had a look and found this link - hope it is of help to you both: http://www.sch.gov.qa/sch/En/scontent.jsp?smenuId=77&CSRT=3252701301396405985 Even if the meds you are looking for aren't on the list, I'd try to get in contact with HMC (or Khulood) to double check. Good luck :)

Hi KMT, I'm sorry, I don't have any experience of their ring repairing skills. I've only used them for the re-size and replacing a diamond that I lost from a bracelet. Only other jeweller I've used is Shine in the Gold Souq. Again, no experience of repairs but they've made rings for myself and a couple of friends and made a fantastic job. Received really good service from Tzarina and Shine - might be worth checking them both out and see what they say. Sorry I can't be more help.

I'm not a member anywhere but have you considered the old Marriott (Ras Abu Aboud St)? It might be slightly easier to get to from your apartment and certainly easier if your DH wanted to go to the gym after work. We're on their mailing list and they sent out an email last month advising that they were offering a 25% discount promotion if you bought an annual membership in the month of January - might be worth a call to see if you can haggle a discount from them? Their number is 44298520
