I'm sorry to say, but if he can't see the problem and is in denial it's not much you can do apart from the support you have already given. My mother is severely obese and now has diabetes, that still doesn't stop her from overeating and eating the wrong kind of food, it's heartbreaking to see. She's been to dieticians, which advice she doesn't take as she thinks she too old to change her habits, her medication has increased, but still no change. I think it's an addiction and denial, a bit like an alcoholic. I sincerely hope your husband will find motivation, as he has a support wife. Do you think hypnotherapy could work? Thank you for sharing, and sorry to hear about your mom. I didn't think of hypnotherapy honestly, but now that you suggested the idea, yes why not... I'll check a center, and suggest the idea to him, not knowing if he'll be enthusiastic about it or not... Hope things will be better for your mom as well.

Hi xN Just to let you know that there are two facebook pages for JVC community so you will get some information from there. I live in a 2 bedroomed villa - build seems quite good (for Dubai) and so far we have not had any significant problems. It is supposedly more economic that the JVT 2 beds - no ghost air con, pump in garden rather than under ground, better quality pipes and hoses. JVC is still an ongoing site, and there are more parks due in the next year and a few group activities starting up ie mothers and baby group, running group. Traffic is pretty good and apparently they will be creating new accesses into JVC (according to the paper). As with all of Dubai - there can be crazy drivers around and if you join fb you will see some upturned cars and others stuck in the sand. Security cars travel around frequently and there is a telephone number to contact them in case of an emergency - although cannot comment about how good they are as haven't used them. Hope that helps. Hi Cosmos, Can you please share the links of these groups with us? Thanks

Hi Ladies, My DS is turning one and I would like to ask for ideas. How did you celebrate yours? Any nice places for a small party? Most of the places I checked offer packages for children, but we're going to be mostly moms and babies. We don't have a function room otherwise it could have been a solution. TIA

Ack Daza, what are you doing to me! that looks amaaazing! I've just started a 28 day detox so I will save it until after, that looks like an excellent "sometimes food" ;). I'm not sure if it is ok to post the details, but the detox is a great way to step back and look at your eating habits and I think it would be great for you spiritedaway. You have to join the "clean and lean detox" facebook group, (join today as a new round of detox has just started!) https://www.facebook.com/groups/319515628128738/ basically over the course of four weeks you remove certain foods from your diet and introduce a bunch of other ones. I'd call it a "beginners" detox. There is so much great info posted along the way (links to articles and online videos etc). The women who runs it also is a health coach, I have never personally used her one one on one coaching and I'm not sure how much it costs, but again, I think she might be just what you are after, she is Doha based but I know she does online/skype consultations. http://www.therawhealthcoach.com/ We have moved to a mostly paleo diet, (although every so often we fall off the wagon bigtime). I recently bought a couple of really good books which have changed the way I cook, I wrote a long post on this thread. http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=219053 I also recently bought an online recipe book for slow cookers, which I haven't actually tried out yet but I love the concept of, basically instead of cooking meals and freezing them, you chop the raw ingrediants, add the spices and freeze, then tip it frozen into the slow cooker, add stock/water/liquids and switch it on. The idea being you prep and freeze ten meals in one go so its only one kitchen clean up. http://www.mamaandbabylove.com/shop/ebook/slow-cooker-freezer-recipes-ecookbook/ Not sure if all my links are allowed, I promise I'm not affiliated with any of them (although I have met Nicole and she seems lovely!) anyway spiritedaway I will copy and paste this message and email it to you, just in case the links do get deleted. Daza and Kiwi I can't thank you enough for your inspiring answers. I'm having a look on the links you've sent me and I have to say there's a lot I have to learn and change in my habits, but I'm ready for anything for my kids to be healthy. I'm always open for suggestions so if you'd like to drop me a line on nejla53 at gmail dot com, that would be my pleasure.

Thanks Ladies, that gave me some insight. I have to say the option of getting the maid out of the room is not an option. She got used to it as her private place and I don't want to take that from her. I have to look for a temporary solution that will help until we consider finding a bigger place.

Hi taurusbaby, I just give her regular Aptamil 3. I also cut out cheese and yogurt, he said strictly no yogurt. I highly recommend giving it a try, for me I saw a difference within 2 nights of giving her formula, and it sounds like your LO has a similar milk pattern to mine. Also, if you dont already, keep a humidifier near your LO at night when they sleep, I think that has also really helped stop her runny nose. I got a Medisana one from Boots. Hope your LO feels better! Hi, can I have the doctor's contact please? I'm also thinking my daughter has the same but prefer a check up first. Thanks

Yes, it is so important that you eat well yourself, I think you need to step back and change your strategy. With a one year old you can get away with handing them brocolli while you eat a biscuit, a three year old is not so easily fooled. She needs to see you not only eating healthy food, but ENJOYING healthy food. I would suggest an overhaul of your family meals, and if you must eat junk don't let her see you doing it. Also don't talk about being overweight, losing weight, or joke about having eaten "naughty" foods in front of your kids. The message you want to be given is that healthy food is a treat, something to be enjoyed, not something you eat because you "should". This is a good website http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/start-here/ And if you do a Facebook search for 100daysofrealfood the same site has a page with daily posts. If you do see a nutritionalist, see them for yourself, so you can be a role model for your children, that will be a far more powerful and long lasting lesson. This is a journey we are on ourselves, and I'm not being preachy, I have a total weakness for sweet foods but we are moving further forward everyday. Kiwispiers you are not being preachy at all. In fact You are being very helpful and I can't thank you enough. I know I need to see a nutritionist more than her. I actually need to reconsider many aspects of our daily life. Is it ok if I contact you by email for more advice? mine is nejla53 at gmail dot com. Thank you so much. Have a nice weekend.

Thanks seekinghelp and kiwispiers!! Your answers are really helping. Seekinghelp you mentioned you consulted a good nutrionist. Can you please give his / her contact? Thanks a lot kiwispiers yes indeed, your question shook me as I know I'm not a good eater myself, that's why we probably freak out seeing our kids getting these habits and fearing they would turn into us. That rang the alarm bell for me.

I've bought once a pack of Bambi for my 7 months old baby, and it gave him rush like crazy!!! He had never had rush before, and since I started using it, his bottom became always red, no matter what creams I put, it didn't go away! I doubted it was the diaper and stopped right away, 2 days later the rush was completely gone and he never get it again. I was not the only one. I happened to buy together with a friend for her 4 months old baby, and same happened to him. I wonder that's why they are selling this brand online. They should call their stocks back rather! I bought it from Geant, and I'm going to complain about it.

I am also someone who fears a lot of things (roller coasters, horror movies...) and driving was one of them. I had my driving license in 2003 and couldn't drive for years back home. When I got married and came here in 2009, we've rent a car but my husband was changing his visa so for some months he couldn't drive, so I had to. The first time I drove, 2 blocks and I found myself in Sheikh Zayed, I was screaming and crying and thanks God I didn't make an accident, but I didn't, you know why? because like you said "I'm too scared of hurting someone" and that feeling means also you're too responsible. A year later I've had a job in Abu Dhabi, and I had to drive all that long, and the job was so interesting that I couldn't say no. Today driving is just automatic for me, and it is even something I enjoy (when you're not stuck in traffic of course). I'm not saying you have to take the car and head down Sheikh Zayed of course, but having someone who trusts you is extremely helpful. I couldn't have make it without my husband's help. I hope this helps. Best of luck

We had this drama too, every morning and when we wash hair.... I tried all the oils recommended and can open a small shop with all the products we've tried that have not worked for detangling my daughters waist length, curly hair. Then just recently, we were at a birthday party and daughter was running around with her hair unbrushed and looking like a birds nest (insert embarrassed smiley here!) because we'd only managed to brush her hair for about 5 minutes before she'd had enough. Another mum at the party offered her unsolicited advice for such a regular product I almost rolled my eyes......... but I went and bought it because I had not tried it and for 20dhs I thought what have I got to loose. Lo and behold it is our new miracle product. I told her I bought her a new grown up conditioner, just like mummie's and let her put it on herself. No tangles, 2 minutes to brush / comb through and she now loves taking care of of her gorgeous hair. Use the Pantene Oil Replensihment conditioner when you wash hair and then the Pantene Oil replenishment leave in overnight cream (comes in a pump bottle) before you comb wet or dry hair. We actually use the overnight cream everynight now and plait her hair before she goes to bed. Hi gemm3210, I've looked for the product in Geant, but they had an "oil replacement collection", are you sure of the name? I wish we could send pictures here, just to make sure it's the same product.

My daughter also has curly hair and very knotty. Is the Tangle Teezer available in most Boots? I've bought one online called "knot genie". I didn't know back then it is available in stores. http://www.mumzworld.com/en/knot-genie-detangling-brush-fairy-pink

A few of my nieces and one sister have very curly hair. This is what they do. Wash only once a week. While it is wet and has conditioner in, comb it through to detangle and then rinse. After washing just gently dry with a towel and leave it alone. My sister who's hair is long wraps it in a towel to dry. They do not brush their hair during the week when it is dry as this makes it frizzy. I know they put it in a pony tail for school/work but never brush it - only use hands to put into the shape and then use the tie/elastic. There is no need to wash every day - this is overkill for a child and just creating work for yourself. rejoice in the curls! Washing once a week seems a much more comfortable solution for me. But hygienically speaking, isn't it less than needed for kids? She's going to school next year, and I'm already frightened from nits!

I can't wait to try this with her, but one question: is it ok to use a grown ups conditioner for her hair? she's 3, and a hairdresser once told me kids should use only kids product until they're 5 years old at least.

I have curly hair and so do my kids, although none of us have extremely curly hair. Honestly the best thing I find is brushing our hair whilst in the shower with conditioner on. You can buy conditioner for children which is mild, I know some will object to conditioner on children, but I have seen my children cry their eyes out when I try to undo knots from their hair without it. You will find brushing her hair whilst she has conditioner on is so much easier and the brush will just glide through. Hope this helps! Thank you for your reply. That's exactly what I'm doing: I brush her hair while in shower with conditioner, that's why shower time takes no less than 30 - 40 mn, I've bought the "original sprout" conditioner, thinking an organic brand would be softer for her hair. I've bought also a "body shop" natural bamboo brush, another "knot genie" one from internet... The problem is her hair is so thin that it gets heavy knots not just at the ends but even close to the roots. I sometimes wish I've had some super power to brush them easily!

Okay so this is going to sound a little strange but I was just visiting a friend of mine in Australia who had a similar problem with her three year old who wouldn't allow her hair to be washed. Might be a little unorthodox but she found some videos on youtube of children who had nits and showed these to her daughter. Apparently ever since, the child has been obsessed with having her hair washed and put into pony tails!! She seems to now be a little terrified of the thought of catching 'nips' from others and wants to be as clean as possible! Not making any recommendations here, just passing on something that I heard! Looking for a "like" button Hahahahahaaa same!! Lol this was a wonderful idea I could've never thought about :)) Your friend must be really clever or really desperate :)) Many thanks

Hey ladies, I would really appreciate some tips please. A week ago i started to potty train my little girl, at first it was going great, she loved sitting on the potty, i really thought she would learn in no time. However, for the past two days, when i have tried to put her on the potty she fights and screams to get off, she also holds her poo in. At first i assumed I was late as she had already let some poo out in her nappy but then within minutes of me changing her and putting her down, she will let the rest out. I know potty training is not easy, i dnt expect it to be either, but i don't understand why the potty seems to have turned into a scary place for her now. Has anyone had any experiences of this? TIA x I followed "how to potty train in 3 days" and believe me it worked amazingly for me. Here is my email address nejla53 at gmail dot com. You can drop me a line and I'll send you the ebook i have.

Hi ladies We arrived in Dubai a week ago - staying at Dunes Apartments opposite Mall of Emirates. I am looking for somewhere to take our 14 month old dd in walking distance as my hubby is at work this week and I don't have a car yet...and I'm not quite brave enough to attempt to drive here just yet! Any coffee mornings, mums groups or just play grounds would be great. I think we both may go a little stir crazy stuck in an apartment all day and there are only so many times I can walk her around the mall or take her swimming. Thanks :-) Hi Laura15, I live in Al Barsha as well so here is my email if you'd like to have a chat over a morning coffee or a playdate nejla53 at gmail dot com.

I think there are HUGE advantages for a Sept birthday child. They tend to be more confident and stats show that more children born in Sept, Oct, Nov gain university places than children born in other months. I have one daughter born end of July and one born in Nov and I genuinely feel it's tougher for the July born DD. I often rue the day she wasn't born 5 weeks later - if she had been one school year lower it would really have helped her confidence etc. Good schools should differentiate in their teaching so children who are more 'advanced' should be provided extension work. If it were me, I would enjoy the extra year at home with her. Thank you Feemick :) I would certainly consider this point of view.

DS was born in July 2010 so he should be starting FS1 next September..however, comparing to where both DS and I come from this is way too soon. From my understanding he would be in year one at the age of 5. I am born in July too and I did not go to school until I was 7 ! My husband on the other hand was in grade one at the age of 6 and a half. If we decide to leave Dubai I would want my son to be at the same age as his school mates in our home countries. If we follow the British curriculum and enroll him in FS1 next year , he might end up back home in year 2 at the age of 6 with some of his mates aged as old as 8 !! I also do not like that he will always be the youngest in his class and possibly struggle to keep up with the older kids. Is there any way I can hold him back and enroll him a British curriculum school a year later than supposed too? Do I need approval from KHDA or how does this work exactly? will the schools accept my application like this? It seems we have tha same problem in an opposite way lol. http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=192390 I hope we'll find practical solutions :)

Would you please tell me more about how your friend's DD sat for the test? was it with the KHDA or the school? My major concern is that she will be ready but she wouldn't be able to join. If a test will prove she may require another year, I will be more than relieved.

Hi Ladies, I have recently started looking for a school to register my daughter. She was born on October 2010, so I thought she would be going to FS1 on September 2013. However, I was shocked to learn that the due date for schools is September, which means that my daughter would be going to school with kids almost a year younger than her!! I honestly think it's unfair. Not only she's tall and smart, even for her age, but she would be the oldest in her class. Some are telling me :Well that might be an advantage she would be more self confident and you would "invest" in a year not lose one. I still think it's not reasonable. I would accept it if they would ask her to sit for a test if she doesn't meet the level, but not because of a month's difference. Anybody who had been in the same position or any solution? Should I contact the ministry of social affairs to get more information?

I've had that cobone package and it worked very well for me that I renewed another pack. Staff are very welcoming and professional. The location is very convenient as it close to where I live. Parking area. Never crowded. I've had times when I was the only one at the salon - especially for late hours - and was treated as a princess tough. I would highly recommend it.

Hi Niggly, if you do decide to put your LO in nursery, make sure you follow your instincts and dont go for convenience like I did!. I recently had a bad excperience with my LO at Golden Beach Nursery, and had to pull them out. I chose it because of the location (its very close to raffles where my older child attends). Now Im feeling like a bad mummy :( I'm also curious to know what was the bad experience with Golden Beach Nursery if you don't mind.
