It was the 4th choice school for my son who needed a year 7 place. However it was the only school we got a place in. I must say I was very pleasantly proven wrong to have any negative views. The leadership team, form tutors, subject teaches have all been fantastic. My son has progressed a great deal academically. My only gripe is that they are not so strong in sports. Plus although it is a UK curriculum school only 20% are British. It changes to IB after GCSE so if wanting A levels we need to find another school. However overall we are very pleased and have now moved our younger two there as well. Both have settled well and are happy.

why has everyone missed the point? The OP has been taking her baby to the salon for months and was not told anything. So just this once as her baby cried she was told not to bring the baby next time. And the salon only allows quiet babies- seriously??????

Having been through all this a year ago: I thought my son was a definite candidate for DC and so did everyone else. However he did not get in. In fact he only got offered a place at our 4th choice of school which was Wellington International. However, he is happy, settled and thriving there. Has embraced school life fully and his academic progress is fantastic. The only fault I can find about the school is that I feel they don't take their sports seriously enough ie not enough practice for teams etc. Communication excellent and every query I have had was addressed. JC will be extremely hard to get into for anyone who is not in JPS as they don't have enough places or all their year 6 at JPS. Once they sit the assessment, places will go to JPS first then siblings etc and like I mentioned, they don't have enough places for even all their current year 6 at JPS. DESC- hmmm I loved the setting and the facilities the school offered. But something did not quite sit right. My son did not get offered a place and when I wrote to them numerous times asking why etc, there was no response. Other kids who were less of an all rounder and was of a lesser academic ability than him got places..................the majority of these kids (in fact all bar one) were caucasian......... With DESC, there were a lot of no shows and they did have places in September of year 7. So don't despair if you really want a place and don't get one before September. I think Kings will be excellent in a few years....................all my friends who have kids there are happy with the education in secondary. Last point- all the old year 6 kids are happy and thriving in their various schools....................at the end of the day, parental attitude / child's approach to learning etc will play a larger role in their success than which school they go to.

it's a big big decision to make. we moved back with my oldest going into year 4 and my daughter into year 2. we have been wowed by schools in the UK. So much after school activities - all done in all weathers. my kids have adjusted really well and if you ask them now - year 7 and year 5 they say they love the uk so much more as they can do so much more. my daughter horse rides in all weathers and last week took her first polo lesson in the pouring rain! my son can play rugby, football, cricket all the time - so much sport in the schools (sometimes I think maybe too much when I'm on the touchline freezing cold!!!) Their school plays matches against other schools every week and often twice a week. lots of interhouse matches too. so many fabulous after school activities. We miss Dubai and miss our lovely friends there but we had the chance to come back and decided that we are having such a good time back here and the kids are having such a good time that we are staying in the UK. it's also lovely to re-connect with friends and family. Don't understand the comments about not being able to get jobs - all the 6th formers I know have great Saturday/sunday jobs and jobs in the evenings. I don't know any who want to work who can't get a job - perhaps we are luck in the area we are living plus we have an awesome hotel just up the road with a spa and many of them work there so maybe we have rose coloured specs! Vixen - where are you based - we should try and meet up!!!! I know many who have done their education in Dubai - they've all done really well. just wanted to jump on here and say that we chose to move back to the uk and we have been very very pleasantly surprised - it's a very lovely place to be and the kids have a lovely quality of life and superb opportunites. Sounds Amazing! Your children must attend a very unique school. When my kids attended school in the UK sports were played in seasons. Football and Rugby in the Winter/Spring term and Cricket in the summer. Certainly whilst they may have had an interschool match once a week to have both interschool and interhouse matches on a weekly basis is incredible. Unfortunately I think your kids probably go to a private school and an exceptional one at that. The majority of state schools certainly wouldn't offer as wide a range of after school activities etc. So unless the OP is thinking of a school in the same league, I hope she understands the majority of schools are not like this. Having said this, I will say without a doubt that a UK education if in a good UK school is second to none. However we believe there is more to life than a paper education. The schools here have been OK so far with the kids performing well in the national tests which I think are marked in the UK. We are financially better off here so able to afford to travel more etc which also adds to their education. Due to the lack of commute to work, we are also able to spend more time with the children over here than in the UK. Where we lived in the UK was a very conservative Caucasian area where the children were not exposed to other cultures so very happy about the cultural mix over here. And don't forget the weather............................not everyone likes the cold and the wet. I didn't realise how much the weather impacted on our general wellbeing until I moved over here.

I also would not give your licence up. In fact I would think twice about giving your job up. Continuous practice is important not only for UAE employment but also if you decide to return to UK. Well that is another whole ball game. I have held on to my UK licence to practice for the past 2 years but will finally have to relinquish it as I won't be able to revalidate...................to have it reinstated you need to have been in practice for the past 3 months to show them your competence (this is in the UK).

So true that children are only small for a short time and I am very conscious that there will be a time when they flee the next. On the other hand, time does fly. Kids are only small for a short time and will flee the nest. If I had given up work, what would I do after 5-10 years out of the job market? Would I be able to find employment? If I could not work part time then I would probably give it up- whatever the cost to my career-like some people say, you won't regret not spending more time at work. But if you can find a happy medium somewhere, that would be the best option.

like somebody else said- live in a high rise apartment. Our villa is full of ants and we have seen lots of cockroached in the bathrooms. If you drop a grain of rice even- ants will cover it within no time even if no ant was to be seen in the area before...............I don't remember having a problem to this extent in the UK. My religious beliefs have prevented me from getting pest control in so far, but they are so getting to me that I may just do it

Oh I am all for free play at home............if they actually play. My kids prefer the electronic things or TV. Yes I do take them away and take a wire off the TV so they can't put it back on- then they spend the time moaning at me.................. there are countless board games at home, colouring things, lego bricks etc....................

Despite "recruiting" two new members just last week through expatwoman; due to injuries, work etc, we find ourself short of players again for our netball team. If anyone is interested in joining a recreational netball league on a Tuesday evening at the Collegiate American School in Umm Suqueim, please let me know so I can send you details. The matches will be played on a roster so could be at 7, 7:50 or 8:40pm. There is a fee but you can pay pro rata as the league has already started.

I used to play GA / GS when i was at school (a long time ago) - i would be interested if you need those positions. This would depend where it is thou. It is at collegiate american school behind the choitrams in Umm Suqeim. Yes we could do with a shooter. However the way it works, everyone gets a chance to play their favourite position for some of the game. I don't think we have anyone who is set on being a shooter so that will be fine - but you may need to play other positions as well.

I usually refrain from commenting on these threads but I felt like I wanted to give the original poster some support. I come from a country where maids/ cooks/ drivers etc were the norm in my life so I have been around domestic help my whole life. Just saying this so you know I am not ignorant about hiring domestic help. Whatever you were feeling about being asked to work extra, would anyone shout at their boss and have a tantrum? This is the point the OP was trying to make I believe. About time off- yes of course everyone needs some time off. My husband would love some. He is trying to build his business up, has worked from 8am to 10pm every day this week and is always available on the telephone to his clients even if he is at home or on holiday. He will not get a weekend off to just put his feet up as we have to ferry the kids around as we need to be in two places at the same time. And whatever anyone says, most maids would rather be rewarded in material goods and would value it more than say a week off. As desertrose mentioned, there may be something underlying that led to this outburst. After all she is also a woman and us women are known to have mood swings now and then. However the fact remains, that I would not get away with shouting at my employer, threatening to leave them in the lurch so why should we all expect this maid to? Yes I do understand the different education levels but then again you can't argue if this is the case, that everyone should get the same treatment. Sorry I am not articulating this very well but I hope OP reads this and feels that someone "got" her. In case anyone is wondering- my mother's helper- (my nanny) has been with us since I was born so that is 38 years (now she has the role of being my widowed mother's companion rather than domestic help). My own helper has been with us for 6 years............................... edited by bubby1234 on 12/02/2014

Thank-you ladies for the responses. I have the info all ready to go that's all fine I can deal with the figures. The activation code is being sent to my Mum and Dads as that's were the accountant registered it last year and I have a reference number. So all good so far. It's just the form I don't understand ;-( I think Kelly you might be right about using the accountant again but I've left it too late this time. I thought self assessment sounded like the right section but I was unclear why it was asking when I became self employed and what I do? So that's why I think I've gone wrong. All I want to do is enter the figures.Maybe I'll just have to ring them and check. I don't think I have filled out a NRL1 I will look into that thank-you.

To fill in self assessment online if you are resident abroad, you need commercial software- you can download it for a fee - links on HMRC website. I think the form is SA100. I have just filled mine in online. I thought you can earn a minimum amount before paying tax but I am not sure if this applies to people living abroad as I had less than £8K income and had to pay 20% tax on all of it

thanks x hope you are feeling smug after the fireworks display (and others ready to eat humble pie) - from where we were (Palm Strip Mall beach) the burj khalifa ones were on at midnight (and I am sure there was a 5,4,3,2,1 countdown in blue but could not confirm it on video footage), followed by the Burj al Arab a few mins later and as we thought everything had finished and started walking back- the palm ones started!

We've spent the past 2 years on Jumeirah Beach with the kids. Both times we've parked ourselves with a birdseye view of Atlantis, Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa just behind us. The fireworks are amazing, and everyone is in good spirits which is ideal with the kids on toe. sorry to resurrect this old thread- wee wills- do you mean the beach behing palm strip mall?
