Hi Ladies Both my kids are off on a school ski trip at the end of January and I need to find some boots suitable for the snow. Does anyone know of anywhere in Doha that sells any ski/snow wear - especially footwear?

Thank you everyone for your replies, we are now moving to Qatar in the middle of January. Hi Noonie... Thank you so much for your kind offer. Please stay in touch, it would be lovely for my daughters to meet up with you. My 19 year old ( Angelique) will also be looking for work when she arrives also. My husbands work has informed us of the school ( English Parkhouse in Ain Hamour area For my other daughter (Alexandra ). We will be put in accommodation for the first two months, then I shall be on a mission to find a good villa on a compound preferably. Hi Rae Just taught you should check into the regulations that the SEC have brought in that they won't register or allow any new pupils to start at a school after January in any school year - you might need to check with the schools if you meet the deadline or not as you may have to wait for your daughters to start in September. I have a daughter in Year 10 at Doha British School - very strong academics and so far very impressive.

Hi cats45, I have a 12 year old son, who was just talking about skate parks today - his friends are all off to one tomorrow. Will find out where it is for you and let you know. I think it will be around Villaggio area somewhere.

We air freighted a few boxes over with Pickfords and they smashed our tv in the move. Be careful re insurance and make sure you have everything covered you would need to spend a fair amount on to replace.

Hi Picklz Have you thought about hiring a bouncy castle and have it out at the pool? Have seen a few parties like this and the kids love it. Or a visit to aqua park?

It depends on what you are classing as 'best'. We drink all different brands of bottled water and can't honestly say we can tell the difference. Just some are cheaper than others!

Hi Aus, My family and I (DH and 2 kids) have just moved to Doha in May this year from Australia and so far we are really enjoying it. DH is still working comparable hours to those he worked in Australia and cost of living we find is fairly similar. The major benefit we are finding is that we are getting our accommodation funded and travel is by far cheaper here than in Oz. I guess your reasons for moving will have a major impact on whether it is worth coming over or not. We found that the job market in Oz is a little slow and we really want to travel a little more, so being here will certainly help us with that. Like Sandyfeet has already said, there are new schools opening all the time - maybe you need to look at the new branches of schools in Al Wakra as you may have more luck getting places there.

No, the kids won't start school until September, by then I should think they will have their visas in place (fingers crossed!).

Hi Ladies, On the application for residency permit(RP) for my family, it requires 6 months bank statement. Does that mean I have to be away from them in 6 months cost effectively ? Or they can come as visitors visa for a month then exit/re-entry again to Bahrain or other nearby country? but my kids won't be allowed to go to school there because they don't have RP yet. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. :) Hi fauna We are just going through this process - DH started work in May and kids and I moved out with him on tourist visas. His PRO at work extended our visas for an additional month, then we have just been on a visa run to give another month on the tourist visa. Meanwhile, he can apply for a family visit visa with 3 months of bank statements, so hopefull after another 1 month extension, organised by his work, we will be ok to stay in Doha. So all in all, have been here since May, with just one visa run. Oh, just one point - you do have to have return air tickets when entering Doha on a tourist visa. edited by shoesnbags on 11/08/2014

There's also a lovely little shop at Dar Al Salam Mall in Abu Hamour that sells ready made fondant. Love shopping there!

Have heard lots of recommendations for DESS and doha college. I am also personally impressed with Doha British School. But I would suggest you look around and chose one that suits your kids.

I am looking for a little advice please, if possible... Our removal people managed to break our tv during the air freight. Since then we have been told that it wouldn't have worked anyway here as it's not compatible. It's from Australia and the research I did suggested that it should work in qatar but now I don't know if it's worth shipping any other tvs over. Does anyone have any experience of using overseas (particularly from Australia) ?

I don't know of any, but I do know that you should be able to source it through the school.

Hi Eleanor I've just received our air freight from Australia, in which was a box of books. We were told by our removalists in Oz that no food items whatsoever we're allowed. We also had a couple of games sent over. Hope this helps!

From the research I have done, I think you do still need a work permit even if you are on your husbands sponsorship. Try google.

Shoesnbags Can you please Help guide me into admissions for DBS? I have a 2 year old whom i want to admit in their pre-school next year i.e Sept 2015. I moved from Aus recently too and am really looking for a good school for her. DBS is one of my preferences. Can you help guide me a bit? I emailed the school but they havent gotten back. I would be really grateful. Hi SQ2014, where in Australia are you from? Both my kids are going to DBS but in the high school in September, I'm not sure what the process is for pre-school but I do know that they didn't have as many applicants for their Al Wakra campus as anticipated , so there may be a chance for you there. Having looked round the school I am impressed and the pre-school looked great. Sorry I can't be of any more assistance at the moment - I am teaching there in the primary school from September so may know more towards the end of the year if that helps. PM me if you want any more info! edited by shoesnbags on 17/06/2014 edited by shoesnbags on 17/06/2014

Hi Nona12, not so sure about the visa but it took my husband a couple of weeks to get his work visa before we arrived in Doha, his PRO arranged everything. It has then taken a little over 3 weeks for the RP to be granted, again organised by his work. In regard to schools, the only one I know that has spaces is the brand new campus of Doha British School in Al Wakra. Hope this helps!

I need to buy some kitchen items - chopping boards, plates, cups, glasses pans etc and some bedding and pillows before our furniture arrives from Australia. I've heard there's an IKEA in Doha, does it sell the same things as it does everywhere else? I have a pet hate of parking in mall car parks - find the driving gets worse for some reason - had anyone tried out IKEA here or is there anywhere else you can recommend to buy general household items that are not too expensive?

If you book through the company you are working for, they get a much better rate. The Ezdan in a West Bay is cheap - clean and basic but some building work happening. Also, try the Governor in a west bay, their rates are reasonable.

Hi SJ, My husband is also in the building/civil industry and he used a website called Gulf Talent. If your husband puts his CV etc up on there, he can apply directly for positions and the companies themselves can look him up and contact him if he fits what they are after. From putting info on that website to being here in doha took us 3 months in total. Can't help you with the healthcare side, sorry. Good luck!

Hi everyone, I have been looking through the threads on here and it's really useful information to someone new to Doha, so thanks! We are a family if 4 currently living in a West Bay but hoping to move upto Al Waab / Abu Hamour area once we find a compound. We have moved out now with my husbands job and I am home schooling the kids until they start at DBS in September. We have a 14 year old daughter and a 12 year old son - who is football mad but desperately missing his friends and home in Australia (have lived there the past 8 years but originally from UK). Now here's where I really need some help please! I need to find some things to get my kids involved in so they can start meeting other kids their age, but a lot of the sport programs aren't taking people on until summer camps in July. I have also been told they can't start school early due to ministry regulations. Does anyone have any ideas or kids of their age that we could arrange a get together? Any help is appreciated.
