Hello! We moved here nearly 3 years ago and love it. Doha College has a primary campus in West Bay but please please apply NOW. The deadline for September is fast approaching and you will be upset if you miss it. Entry is competitive but there are a variety of years with spaces due to the oil company layoffs so it is worth the process. Other schools with UK curriculum are Compass, Doha English Speaking School, Sherborne and Doha British School. Good luck!

Also Batting!! nightmare - if you're shipping, ship some! Polyester is findable, but I haven't found the rolls of nicer cotton or bamboo stuff anywhere....

As an aside to anyone else wondering (as realise post was about boys)- husbands should wear shorts below the knee, I know someone who was pulled up by many a security guard in Malls on this - the guy concerned was from Australia and could not get his head around this!

Hello Hope the packing is going well! If you are on Facebook there are a few Qatar groups - Qatar Quilt Guild / Handmade Qatar / The Seamstresses (who make products which are sold at stalls) and so on. DO bring your own cutting mat, rulers etc. Very hard to find decent ones here, the fabric souq (Escalator Souq!) is GREAT for cottons though from cheap through to more expensive and beautiful but still 'cheap' Japanese cottons. Needles and thread OK, but 'proper' quilting cotton or variagated cotton - King Tuts etc not available as far as I've found. If you are here before Christmas, hit the Christmas markets, usually on University Campuses or at Hotels, or the MIA Bazaar held every saturday in the Park. You will easily meet people there. Hope that's helpful.

I would definitely consider small toys or colouring packs to keep children occupied in cars and cafés - you will probably spend quite a bit of time in both at some point. Things like hide n seek bags are great, but not easy to come by unless you make them yourself ;)

Hi Pootle 765 I told my husband that sunglasses would probably be quite expensive! Lol I'm coming over with 5 pairs so as my daughter like to "play" with them. I've also bought a lot of shoes, although he's assured me that there is a Clark's shoe shop there....but I'm guessing it'll be really expensive. Every time I think I'm finished shopping, I'm told there is something else that we would be cheaper getting whilst we are in the uk lol :) !! You are absolutely right, shoes are my biggest nightmare - they are VERY expensive here (I am back now!) and I am not convinced the measuring is consistent...one of my sons has flat feet so I need to be sure I'm getting things right, plus Clarks don't always fit around his ankles...! Are you here also now? hope you are settling in OK... Australians - all the usual baby stuff is available here, but bring next size up of everything also! Toys...I have older kids now, but struggle with non- branded stuff, you'll find most toys are Movie / TV related. Bring books, there are NO libraries and the bookstore choice is VERY limited. you can buy it all online, but nothing like going into a bookstore and flicking through stuff.... Again, think ahead, beyond picture books because if you are shipping it is much easier to ship a box of books than bring on a plane.. That said I always always bring more out when I fly! DVDs of familiar stuff while you are waiting for internet connection can also be a lifesaver...in the UK we have CBeebies, not sure what Aussie equivalent is? good luck!

Ooo tricky! Not sure what she likes: here's what I would do: Souq Waqif for sure, the corridors are air conditioned to an extent, but even just going for a juice outside a cafe is good for people watching. I take a pencil case of stuff for the kids to distract them but with little ones maybe take iced juice or fruits in water in a see through beaker or bottle for them to play with? MIA have a ceramics exhibition on at the moment. Cafe is pricey but they have lovely sofas! The lighting in the galleries can be quite calming for kids also...don't hold me to that! The sea is actually hot at the moment, a breakfast picnic at Fuwairit is lovely but requires getting up early to beat the heat. Katara is a bit closer, has some great cafes, the chocolate cafe always a winner - there is a great Ottoman lounge for lunch - looks hugely expensive but is actually quite reasonable, or the newish Egyptian place around the other side of the amphitheatre is also nice and the amphitheatre is a spectacle worth showing off, even if there aren't any actual performances in there at the moment!! Mmmm, bit specific, but the fabric souq, Second hand furniture souq and wholesale market will all give a multicultural dimension to the trip...it depends whether she'd rather be brunching in The Four Seasons ;) !! edited by Pootle765 on 25/08/2014

Yes! Well, you need to call them and tell them the date you are leaving the country for sure, because if they find out they will reclaim your benefits anyway...assuming you are coming over to live here? If you are renting your property out you also need to inform them that you will be a 'non resident landlord'...and complete a tax return on the earnings you receive from this. Also, consider any National Insurance Contributions which you may want to keep making - or not - which will probably involve calling yet another number.. I am not an expert, so please don't ask me anything on the detail of the above!!!!

All of the schools mentioned are good. If I had anything to add it would be: be super organised about deadlines. I nearly came a cropper because my chosen school said in Sept. Applications would close in January... Ha! Found out on the grapevine that they were to close in November because they were so swamped... A very lucky reminder to me not to be too British and expect that someone would have had the courtesy or foresight to call me and let me know of a major change in plan. Just be one step ahead and be comforted that you are not neurotic or a pain, and that everyone else is probably doing the same ie ringing admissions frequently... Also, you are right to remain optimistic, because no-one else will be that for you. I have had a real treat as I couldn't find my youngest a spot in pre-school. What a great, precious, fun year it has been for us. I know everyone has different circumstances, but my glass is half full as a result!

Hi all, great you are finding friends here! I moved last year and am back in the UK... Here is what is in my suitcase with apologies for those without kids: Tampax (! Not easily available and vanish when they do appear) Kids' shoes and trainers More new sandals and summer pumps for me (driving in flip flops is not for me) Little cardigans from Primark - perfect for covering strappy tops I sew, so double sided bondaweb.. Designer sunglasses from TK Maxx (cost me £10, cost in Doha, add x1 "0") New swimming costume Kids uniform items like socks Kids books Fun kids lunchbox dried fruit snacks (very cheap in UK) LEGO! Small birthday presents for kids from Home Bargains / Wilkos - almost impossible to find stuff in Doha that isn't cheap 99p shop quality or hugely expensive. I am Hello Kitty laiden... ....think that's it... Good luck!

We love Wholesale Market - crates of stuff for 15-20QR per crate...huge bunches of herbs...next door to the fish market too. It is a true experience but if you can go with what is in season (fascinating variation throughout the year) and batch cook (esp. Passata sauce) you will save loads! We end up giving veg away to our neighbours and it is still cheaper!!

Do you mean craft fairs? There are a few... I really liked the University of Northwest Carolina (?) one. Ones at hotels vary a lot, nice to hear some festive music and see a tree though! Generally I'd love to see more creativity and crafty self starters in Qatar...a lot of souvenirs in the Souq are made in China, which is so disappointing. And, at some fairs there are nice things, but they don't always reflect the Middle East or my taste (picky aren't I?!!) I can see that, having bought all the gifts from the Souq that I actually like, for Christmas presents last year, I'm going to be quite stuck this year!! In short, if you see something you like, buy it!! There used to be carols at the singing sand dunes, but it wasn't advertised anywhere last year, despite a few queries on here and elsewhere, probably for fear of it being cancelled...such a shame. Qatar should be celebrating its expat community's diversity really. Doha Singers usually do a concert... Kids presents are tricky (don't know if this applies to you) - no decent Lego anywhere = disaster!! I really liked Christmas here last year, all said and done, quite peaceful, real camels, trips to the beach, balmy evenings, no commercialism!!!

I tried to enrol my 3 year old son for part time nursery, starting next term. He turns 4 in January, and the nursery wouldn't accept the deposit because they didn't think they would be allowed to take him. They also thought they would probably have to ask the existing 4 year olds to leave...they did say they would call me back in December and let me know either way., but so far no call.. TBH my main concern is getting him a reception place now, I have given up on Pre-school or nursery. I didn't apply for pre-school when we arrived as I didn't want him in full time. We're in the lucky position of me not having to work until September, and am enjoying every last second with my cherub, but also, full time pre-school is expensive for us, as we don't get any school fees refunded until the child is 5. It's all turning out to be a bit of a 'mare, as now I won't have an up to date nursery report for the school application, which I didn't think would be a problem, but it could be when places are so hotly contested. Oh Qatar, you do have your moments...perish the thought that parents might be capable of teaching their children anything to prepare their children for school, or indeed trained nursery staff....I just don't buy the logic on this one. Especially when THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH PRE SCHOOLS YET!!! (Can you tell I feel strongly about this?!)

For those new to Doha, and those missing Primark (ethical issues notwithstanding) I have discovered a very similar shop... It is called Max and I found it next to the 'other' Jarir bookstore on Al Rayyan Al Jadeed Street. I thought it was a children's clothing shop at first, but realised it has homewares, ladieswear etc upstairs. Most stuff appears to be made in China... There are a few gems in there.... If you're coming from town, go over the roundabout with the petrol stations on it ( new Rayyan r/a?) and it's on the right. It's not as big as Primark, but was a good source of kids bath mats, they have nice towels, and I don't know how many minky fleece kids dressing gowns...hats and scarves, a big shoe collection...etc etc. Apologies to those in advance who go there on this recommendation and hate it, you can't please everyone! I had never heard of this store, are there any more like it anywhere else in Doha?

It's Souq Al-Haraj in the Najma area. You will see loads of pick up trucks surrounding it! Wikimapia has sat nav co-ords I think.

Hi Ladies Just in case anyone else wants to know, I have found both of these things! Thought I would share as quite a few people viewed the original post. Fretwork screens can be bought from the Furniture Souq after all - Atal Al-Khaleej Trading and Decor have them tucked away at the back of their lumber store. It's a big store with a blue sign. The screens are all 2metres x 50 cm and range from intricate Islamic patterns 270QR per sheet to stars or other patterns drilled into the wood at 170QR per sheet. There are tonnes of carpenters available to do what you like with them AND also tucked at the back is a GREAT hardware store selling Arabic style key hole surrounds, decorative hinges, wheels, screws, nails, glue, triangles to enable you to hang pictures, you name it!! Before we found this, we found the guys that make the gypsum a/c covers and screens.. They are 450QR per "box" from the GRC Factory street 48 in the Industrial Area. Turnaround time is about 2 days. The awning fabric we found in another part of town: Hamad Upholstery and Curtains Co. Al Asmakh Street nr Asmakh Masjid. Tel. 44352583. The shop sign actually said Tarpaulin on it, which is what caught my eye. inside they have sample books of stripy awning fabric, a special Australian Shading made from a type of plastic and bog standard cream or green sail shading, plus other useful stuff, ie clear plastic for covering tables etc. They will make to size and put in eyelets. Hope this is also helpful to some other people. two days after discovering the fretwork we now have a structure on our roof with screens down two sides hiding the ugly a/c units, which can also support two stripy awnings! roll on the cooler weather and those balmy evenings :)

Hi Ladies We have a roof terrace which we would love to make use of, but it has really ugly air con units on top. Just before I get a load of bamboo screening, recycle a pallet, a la Pinterest, or stick some big plants in front of them, has anyone seen any builders merchant type places that might sell plywood fretwork screens or similar? There seem to be a lot of carpenters at Souq Haraj but not sure whether they stretch to fretwork? I love Islamic patterns, but have only seen concrete covers or individual bricks making up patterned sections on buildings...failing the plywood option, anyone know where I might get the bricks? Don't fancy randomly trawling the Industrial Area...so specific recommendations would be really appreciated! Also, I'd really like to make an awning from stripy Kilim style heavyweight fabric. I found a guy who makes sail shades in Souq Waqif, but he only had white or green plain canvas....anyone seen stripy canvas or even woven wool which could withstand outdoor use? Thanks all!

Very cherry, EXACTLY the same thing happened to me, except I was told at the front desk I also needed a NOL from my husband on headed paper. When I arrived for the second time - having got the eye test shenanigans sorted - I didn't need the no objection letter after all, however, I did need a copy of his RP card, and a bank card, I couldn't pay cash. Good job DH was actually with me as I hadn't realised that. NOL got chucked in the bin and driving licence was printed out there and then. I actually cried I was so relieved! They really need to sort out their website...(LOL!)

Nothing job related, but an example of the divide?.. My two children and I got asked to leave a gallery in the MIA today for, wait for it, quietly sitting and sketching an artefact.... And guess what? We were the only people in there!! had my kids been running riot, screaming and yelling I would have taken it on the chin, but they were actually sitting down, learning...we were asked to draw in the foyer instead. Where there are no artefacts...Completely excellent isn't it?! Cherry on top was when she asked if my husband was in the building...?!?

I find you have to turn all wifi off apart from the device you are using, interference from the laptop makes FT go off and on too. So when I use my Ipad, I turn off wifi off my phone and laptop, it works perfectly then. Thanks salsB for the tip, but this hasn't worked either. The TV is hard wired via a cable, so I don't think it's that, and I've tried turning my mobile off to no avail. Our laptop hasn't arrived in the shipping yet, but I'm wondering if I cable that directly whether things will be better... It's so annoying to have had it working perfectly on an "inferior" "cheaper" mobile package, and now we have super duper fibre, it's all gone haywire!! Anyone else?...TIA again!

Anyone else having FT ipad issues with their newly installed Ooredoo fibre broadband? I had no problems with Facetime until we switched from mobile to fibre, and now no-one can see us!!! I called customer services (111) and they said it was a problem with the app and I should re-install it, then I explained that it worked fine in Starbucks so they said I should turn off the router for 40 seconds at the socket...well, that hasn't worked! Googling suggests our upload speed might not be fast enough, but Ooredoo are in denial and say the speed is adequate for what we want to achieve. The insisted on installing the slowest speed before letting us upgrade, but does anyone know if upgrading to a faster speed will actually fix the problem?!? I'd rather pay as I go for the mobile bb if not!! Argh!! TIA
