Congratulations on all the mums above whose kids got accepted from JPS. May I ask you were your kids in gems little international nursery? Or you were just waiting till JPS opened up for your kids year group? I am wondering if I should send my boy to gems nursery to have priority to go to JPS. Do you think it's worth of it? Thank you!

One of my boys is 1 and a half, for indoor play I take him to : - mini monsters (yes it's busy on weekends and free days but rest of the week it's pretty quiet in the mornings when I've been) - extreme fun motor city - cheeky monkeys (barsha mall) - zebra crossing (sheikh zayed road) Btw most of these are in the entertainer kids book - makes it great value if you have a 2nd child Hi Nayls85, That's a very good point of the entertaining kids book. But I don't have 2nd kid yet planning though. Thank you so much! ;)

I have recently hired a new Filipino housekeeper, but for health reasons I am returning to Texas. Rather quickly actually - in March. My housekeeper came with an excellent reference from her former sponsor (cared for 2 children and villa), and is also the cousin of my colleague's gem of a housekeeper/nanny, so she has family here. She is experienced, mature, stable, dependable, and very sweet. She takes wonderful care of my pets (2 cats and a large dog), and is an excellent housekeeper. She has picked up to the way I like things very quickly, and asks for guidance if she is not sure. Her English is excellent. She is living out while working for me, but will consider living in under the right circumstances. I will post this in the Maid section, but hopeful that the Mods leave it up here for a short time too. Good evening, may I also have her number pls? Pls email to [email protected]. Thank you

DH is in Air-conditioning. Spoke to him and this is what he had to say. Central: It is where there is a big machine either on the roof top or a bit far away from the main building. what it does is that it chills water which is then piped into the house into an indoor unit which can be above the ceiling. Air is sucked through a cooling coil(through which the water flows) which blows into the room. This is how we get cold air. the water which is now a little warmer, goes back to the machine outside to be chilled again. Advantages: very low noise. Disadvantage: High DEWA Bills as 1 machine can cater to an entire villa or a group of villas(depending on tonnage of the chiller) and even if you need A/c in one room, you need to switch on the entire chiller. Package type: this is what Kaydee called a central system.Advantages: not as quiet as Central. Disadvantage: Lots of Duct work and need to have them cleaned (at least once every 2 years)as there is possibility of mold forming in the months that have high humidity. Also can get foul smell because of mold. These machines cater to entire villas or a few rooms at one time. So DEWA bills can be higher as you cannot switch off these machines unless you do not need a/c in all the rooms that it caters to. Split and windows is exactly as Kaydee mentioned. Advantages: switch on only when needed.Hence lower DEWA bills. Disadvantage: Loud and UGLY. Regarding which will cool better. It all depends on how much cooling you need and whether the A/c installed is suited (has the tonnage) for that capacity. On an average a room about 18-20 sq meters(with approx 3.2-3.5mtr) ceiling needs 1.5 tons of cooling capacity. Hope this helps. Dear rush81, This info is so helpful and thank you for replying!

There are three types of AC for villas: Central; a large unit (usually one for each floor) set either in the garden or on the roof. This is ducted throughout the house and is the same temperature throughout. If you have two, each can be set to a different temperature. Split; usually one for each room, with a small unit outside (for each) and a unit attached high up to the wall in each room. These can be controlled individually. Window; again, one for each room (or sometimes two if it's a big room). These are either set into the wall or window and are half inside and half outside (more out than in). They can be controlled individually. Central is probably the most efficient for cooling. Splits need looking after, especially if they are old, but can be very effective. Window units are not as good and tend to rattle and make a lot of noise. AC's come in different tonnage's, a 1 tonne is less effective than a 2 tonne etc. Over the last 30 years I have had all types and prefer central. I have recently had a new split put in my kitchen, as the central ac was not cool enough there. My landlord put in a 2 1/2 tonne and I can have my kitchen as cold as my fridge if I want. I hope this helps a bit. Thank you so much Kaydee, that's so helpful and very into details!

IMO the split a/c's are much more effective as they are individually controlled. OK, they might 'look' ugly stuck on the wall, but who looks up there? :-) You are right though. But the condensers(outside part) are they very noisy?

Polly - Central AC is what you have in your appartment; split AC is the ugly loud units that are stuck on the wall. LOL - Thanks! Well there you go! Learn something new every day! Yep, see I have no idea what the answer it to your question "flyingcutie" No worries! I am just worried if the split AC will be powerful enough for the hot summer in dubai.

Good morning! My son and I always get up around 7am. So she should get up earlier than us to prepare breakfast like 6:30am? When do you let her to have rest time? Around 9pm? After 9pm is her own time? Thank you in advance! I think that setting the hours comes down to personal requirements and what you and your maid agree works for you. My personal view is that 6.30am till 9pm is a loooooong day, six days a week. I wouldn't want to work that myself and I wouldn't expect my maid to either. But if those are the hours that you need maybe give her a few hours rest in the middle of the day? FYI we've just hired a maid (our first) and found that a lot of people who applied for the job were looking to change from their current employer, sometimes only after 1 year, due to the long hours they were expected to work, often similar to what you have mentioned here. So worth considering if you plan to keep your maid for several years, she needs to have realistic hours. For the rest of it, it's all really up to what you want to offer and what they want to ask for in my view. Hope that helps :) Definitely your reply is helpful to me and I appreciate that! Thank you!

I really don't mean this to come across as unkind, but I do think if you are asking these questions you really need to ask yourself if you are ready to employ domestic staff? Every household is different with different expectations. My housekeeper in all honesty does work from around 6am - 9pm. 6am is through choice. We sort our own breakfast, always have and always will. Housekeeper is a naturally early riser. Huge swathes of time off during the day and helps clear up from dinner by choice if we are at home. Normally leaves Thursday afternoon and comes back sat night or sun morning. We just advise in advance if we are travelling, or need help with the zoo as we will be out a lot over the weekend. We really have a happy balance based on mutual respect and trust. We do pay way over the going rate but then I believe you get what you pay for! No no no, in fact I really appreciate your frank comments. I will think about it more careful and thoughtful. Thank you once again!

On a thread yesterday you were looking for advice on hiring a maid for the first time? http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic218246-whats-your-live-in-house-maid-typical-day-like.aspx Now you suddenly want to cancel a maids visa? Very confusing. I also posted another one before asking about should I keep the maid or not. Everyone here is so helpful to tell me their thoughts. Since I decided to let her go so I need a new one and for me is the first time to have a live in maid.

Good afternoon, ladies, I hope that someone out there will be able to help me. I am tearing my hair out and have spent half the day in tears.... On the 1st of January, our new maid entered the country from the Philippines. I had payed an intermediary (a friend of a friend who is Phillipino and organises these things regularly in conjunction with Al Kasari travel) over 3000AED to pay for her visa and her flight. When my husbands PRC went to start the employment Visa process, he was told that she was on a TOURIST visa which is non transferable and that she would need to leave the country and renter with a work visa in place which could be organised very quickly. Now it gets complicated..... She can't go to Hatta as a Phillipino. The airlines will not take her as a transit passenger to Oman or Bahrain without a Visa (which we can't get while she's still in the country). Kish sounds like a dodgy run for a young single girl... The lady who started the process for us appears to be somewhat washing her hands of any responsibility for the mess... So, in desperation, we booked a flight back to the Phillipines, intending to get her back here on the work Visa 72 hours later. Then we found out that she needs labor permits from the Phillipines in order to leave the country again... So, I guess my questions are... 1 does any one know if we can get her in and out of Dubai WITHOUT going to the Phillipines?? Are we missing a trick somewhere. 2 is there any way we can just pay for the tourist visa to be transferred?? 3 exactly what paperwork would she need from the Phillipines to enable her to exit? Is it standard to be given permission to work abroad and how long could it take?? Does that have to be done in Manilla or can we start it here? 4. If you don't know the answers to the questions, is there an agency who could help get me out of this (very expensive and frustrating) mess? Thank you so much in advance, Charlie My maid did a flight to Baharin for exit and come with the visa we sponsor her and that was no problem at all.

No, I would not hire her. I think I made huge mistake here is I didn't call her when she is at her home country. I should have talked to her then I would have found out her English is not so great! But when you hire some maid who is in Dubai, how can you know she will be the one for you? I mean she might have one month transfer visa period and can work for you lets say one week. But I am still not sure if I can know her that well to make big decision. Any suggestion?

For me, no, and the fact you are even asking suggests you know the answer but it is your choice. I would NEVER have someone I was not 100% happy with in my home whilst I have child/children there hehe I think I know the answer just kind of hoping maybe she will get better or she start to show her interest. I had a long chat with her about the situation and saying till the end of this month if you are still not improving then sorry you can go home. Just a small question, I haven't started processing her residence visa or Emirates ID but I finished the medical check up, how can I cancel her visa which is the working one I think?

absolutely love ours, we are in satwa, just next to jumeirah one. no issues with privacy at all! we all keep ourselves to ourselves, having said that our neighbours are lovely and we do occasionally bbq together. the pool is rarely busy. i like the ranches but it's all a bit too stepford wives for me. Hi Kelly! Thank you for replying! I don't really know there is some compound villa in satwa? How's the traffic there during rush hour? and may I know where the compound villa location is? I am glad to hear some positive comments on compound villa since the availability left for me is the only compound villa in either jumeriah or umm squeim. Yes there are lots of compounds and villas here, you should have a drive around and explore. Traffic can be busy around 6 pm onwards but no big deal. What's your budget? We are just behind the Iranian hospital. My budget is no more than 180k for 3 br. How do you think? ours costs less than that. have you done a search on dubizzle for satwa/al badaa? Saw one being managed by wall properties in al badaa 3 br asking for 220k!!! Way beyond my budget! Otherwise I haven't saw anything decent yet! Any other good agency you can recommend?

Some people are in a shared villa, have parties which can go on until late. But they could happen anywhere, from apartments to stand alone villa's. Have you looked at the Springs or AR, as the streets look lovely, kids riding their bikes around - just like the old days Thank you Polly! I did some research about the spring. I kind of feeling springs is a bit far away from city center such as dubai mall or moe. And my friend who stays there telling me it leaks when it rains there so the building i heard it's not so good. I hope I am wrong though! Any one have any idea?

depends how much privacy you want - most seem to have open back gardens which open on to cummunal areas... so not suitable for all famallies. Just wondering if we really want to mix with other neighbours there is no point to stay in a compound. But I think it's very good for my boy to be companied by other kids.
